Results of the Churchtown South 5 mile road race - Thurs 26th July 2012

A record 551 runners attended this year's Churchtown South 5 mile road race, the third race of four in the Ballycotton Summer Series. This is almost 14% up on last year's figure which had equaled the previous record. In just five years, the numbers attending this race have doubled.

This of course resulted in a very crowded start, much like Ballyandreen back in May. Many of the runners at the front were just way too slow to be there which obviously impacted on some of the faster runners behind. However when there was no way for the slower runners arriving late to get around to the back of the field on the narrow roads, I'm not sure they had much choice anyway.

The mens race was won by James McCarthy of East Cork AC in a time of 25:10. The womens race was won by Nollaig Hunter of Leevale AC in 32:07.

I meant to say it last night but could the guys who pull the trigger of the gun/blow the whistle to start the race please give us a count down of 3, 2, 1, Bang!!The gun went off last night before the guy pushing us back had just jumped onto the ditch and then the surge forward went off.
Great race though and very well run. Well done lads.

Hate to repeat this again but a good few slower runners made their way to the front. I am not the fastest but was inconvienced by many runners who had no business towards the front going at the pace they were.

Its a narrow start please move to where you are suited and have respect for other runners who locate themselves accordingly...

I must echo post number 2.

very fast registration. plenty of parking, loads of tea and biscuits. the top 100 results up within the hour and the rest up the next morning. Super atmosphere. all for a fiver. Super stuff and should be a model to all local races. Only issue is the start but the organisers can help that really. well done to all involved

Very good point in last comment, move to where you are suited and respect those who will be doing faster times, also arrive on time!

Excellent well organized race. May need to start putting time markers at the start line.

Really enjoyed it. Very well organised. Slower runners up towards the front is a bit of a pain. Took nearly 30 secs before I got over the start line and spent a lot of time on the grass but I guess that's all part of it. Still really enjoyed it.

Maybe those that are complaining about slower runners at front should do Graded League Track races. There is a 5k coming up soon.

No need for that last comment, I am a slower runner myself & understand that its a major safety issue to have slower runners up the front at an already congested start line. I think in the interest of safety everyone should be more aware of where they choose to line up. Obviously the volume of numbers taking part these days plays a part as well, so this issue needs to be addressed from the organisers & participants standpoint but it's not fair to say this is only an issue because of a minority of people up the front want to run fast because thats just not true.
