Results of the 'Cork Evening Echo' Womens Mini Marathon 4 Mile Road Race/Fun Run...Sun 28th Sep 2008
First of all, the full results will be published in next Saturdays Evening Echo on the 4th of October. Last year, the results were pretty poor in that they only published the finishing times for the first 10. Let's hope that they provide a more complete results service this year.

I have put the results for the top 100 finishers up on a website. Just click on the zoom and use your mouse and drag the results around to see your time.

I had hoped to try out a new camera and get a few photos of this race. However, when I tried the camera this morning, it was dead! The battery was completely flat :o(
So, it was back to the old trusty 2 megapixel camera and maybe it was just as well because some of the shots came out pretty good.

The first set of photos are at the 1 mile mark. After that, I made my way over to Monaghan Road through the thousands of walkers coming towards me! It was a bit like that Alfred Hitchcock film 'The Birds' ;o) All I could hear was the murmur of thousands of women talking away as they walked past.

By the time I got to Monaghan Road, I had just missed the front runners but managed to catch a few hundred as they made their way towards the finishing line. As soon as I had one memory card full, I made my way towards the 3 mile mark, changed the card and took a few more shots there. Even at that stage, the crowds had not thinned out. It really is an amazing event and it's great to see so many taking part. Judging by the number of special charity T-shirts, a huge amount of money must have been collected. Well done to everyone who took part.

As for any ban on MP3 players, forget it! If this was a BHAA event, MP3 players would be way down their list of worries. I saw one person running with her dog on a lead and 2 others running while talking on their mobile phones!! ...and yes, running!!....not walking. See below. Maybe it's true, women ARE better at multi-tasking ;o)

Photos...I have put up 200 on the following website. You can zoom in slightly if you want to have a closer look.

John Quigley of Eagle AC has 470 shots up on the Eagle website from the corner near the 3 mile mark.

Note.........for anyone interested, there is a Ladies Mini-Marathon (7kms) in Limerick next Sunday, the 5th of October (same day as the Cork to Cobh race). For more information, go to the Running in Munster website.

Comments...
"Well done on those shots...some good photo's there. Just enquiring if there will be many races coming up during the winter around the 6 mile mark. Been out of running injured since July and am ready to get back into it...........Sandy"
"Hi Sandy, thanks for the comment. In answer to your question, there are two more 4 mile road races coming up in November. One is on the Marina on the 2nd and the other one is near Inniscarra on the 23rd. I have a road race calendar on the right hand side of this page which I try and keep updated for what is happening for the next 2 months. I also notice that the website is getting a lot of traffic from Google as people are looking for information on the mini-marathon. So for those of you visiting this website for the first time, there is a very active road race scene here in Cork and anyone can enter these races, mainly on the day of the event. Check the dates on the race calendar and check back here for more info............John Desmond"
Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia sets new Marathon record...
The Berlin Marathon was on today and Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia won it in a time of 2 hours 3 minutes and 59 seconds which was a new world record time. Before you get out those calculators, that is an average speed of 4m 44s per mile!! Incredible. Here is a short video clip...(in German!!)

You can find a shorter English version at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_Yk1xeSLRk

...and by the way, considering that there has been a big debate going on here recently on this blog regarding prizes for men over 35, Gebrselaisse is currently 35 years old.

Last Call for the Ladies Mini-Marathon....
For anyone who has changed their mind, it now looks like they will be taking entries just before the race on Sunday. According to the race website........"Late entries will be accepted between 10am & 12 pm on Sunday, September 28th at the Race Office located near the race start area"

Weather.......There is a weak cold front passing over Cork on Sunday. It's likely to be overcast with the possibility there may be some drizzle but it could just as easily be dry as well. No heavy rain is forecast.

Help wanted for Womens Mini-Marathon...
For the Cork branch of the AAI (Athletics Association of Ireland), this is one of their major events in the year. Although the race distance is pretty short, the numbers are absolutely huge with nearly 10,000 women taking part. Perhaps you could help out in some small way? If so, contact these numbers and see how you can help...

Preview of the 'Evening Echo Ladies Mini Marathon' 4 mile road race...Sun 28th Sept 2008 (1pm)
First of all, a quick note of caution. I hear that they have around 9,500 entries for this race. Now we all know that the vast majority are walkers or people who might jog and walk. So, if you are running this and you want a good time, get there early and make sure you get up near the front.

Course...The start of this race is on the Centre Park Road.

Mile 0-1. The first mile or so is very flat with only a slight uphill around the 0.8 mile mark as the road joins the Marina. This should be a very fast mile as long as you stay clear of the mass of runners.

Mile 1-2. Dead flat along the Marina. Probably the most scenic part of the run. Again, it should be a very fast mile. If you have started too fast, this is about where you should find out. Pace yourself for the first 2, you can pick it up over the last 2 if you have gone too slow.

Mile 2-3. This section includes the only real hill. There is a nasty pull from the 2 mile mark up to St.Michael's church, a distance of about 300 metres. You are going to lose some time here. After that, it's reasonably flat with a slight fall downhill into Beaumount about the 2.7 mile mark. Then past the AIB bank and Post office and take a sharp right down Maryville Road. Around the 3 mile mark, there is a very steep downhill section. By far, the hardest mile.

Mile 3-4. After the initial downhill section, the remainder of the mile is flat with the finish on the Monaghan Road, near Kennedy Park.

Click on the map above for a closer look. If you are not sure what part of the city the map shows above, click on this LINK

Entries for this race closed on Thursday, the 25th of September. The weather forecast is that there may be cold front over the country but it should be a weak affair. I'd expect that it will probably be a dry day. Just remember, get there early and avoid the crush.
.......and enjoy it!! ;o)

More photos of the 2008 Cork Half Marathon...
Just came accross another 50 or so photos of the Cork Half-Marathon. These are taken at the finish line and shows some of those in the middle of the field finishing.

The link is HERE.
Late entries for the Cork Ladies Mini-Marathon......
I checked out their website a few days ago and there was no mention of non-online entries. Looks like they have just put up a notice. So, tomorrow Thursday the 25th of September is the closing date for entries. They will be taking entries upstairs in Debenhams on Patricks Street in the city centre between 2pm and 8pm.

More video clips from the 2008 Cork Half Marathon...
Another 7 video clips from the Cork Half Marathon are now up on the net. Again, they are taken near the 12 mile mark and roughly shows those who finished in 150th to 455th position. Note that you will need a fast Internet connection like broadband to watch these.

Clip Number 9.....(1m 06s long).....This piece shows those who finished roughly in 150th to 160th positions. The video clip ends with 2 ladies from West Waterford AC heading for the finish.

**************************

Clip Number 10.......(2m 08s long)........This clip shows those who finished roughly between 161st and 196th position. The poor video camera looks like it was getting a bit of a soaking but you can still make out the runners ok.

*************************

Clip Number 11.......(5m 20s long)..........This video clip shows those runners who finished roughly in 197th to 272nd position.

************************

Clip Number 12.........(9m 11s long).........This is a long clip showing those who finished between 273rd and 380th place. In answer to the question at 0:24...yes, they are sisters!! Further on around 1:50, you can hear talking....lots of talking? Who can talk that much while they are running a half marathon? However, it turns out to be the Barr's girls going for a warm down in the opposite direction. Don't worry, they don't go too far. They re-appear in clip number 14 on the way back.....still running.......still talking ;o)
Still some bad driving though around 6:07.....instead of waiting behind a runner for the way ahead to clear, no......some clown decides to squeeze in between the runner and oncoming traffic.

*******************

Clip Number 13.........(1m 43s long)..........This shows runners in 381st to 399th position.

*********************

Clip Number 14.........(4m 03s long).........This clip shows those runners who finished 400th to 430th passing.

*********************

Clip Number 15..........(4m 38s long)........This clip shows those who finished roughly in 431st to 455th position. At 1:50, the cat is let out of the bag when we discover 'nearly there' is actually 'nearly there by car'!! You can just see all those runners getting around the next corner only to discover that the finish is nowhere in sight ;o)

At this stage of the race, the runners are beginning to get spaced out and the traffic seems to be going faster! Like around 3:49....some idiot driver decides to 'go for it' and nip in front of some runners just before the oncoming car arrives. Heaven forbid that they should be 10 seconds late. Would it really be that big a deal if the road was closed for say 3 hours???

Don't forget to get those entries for Cork to Cobh off to Kevin Cummins.

Tomorrow, I'll have a look at the Ladies Mini-Marathon which is coming up next Sunday.

Entries for the Cork BHAA 'Cork to Cobh' 15 mile road race...
Back around the start of August, I was looking through the race calendar at the upcoming long races and deciding which ones I might do. There were 4 obvious choices...National Half Marathon in Waterford (7th Sept), Cork Half (14th Sept), Cork to Cobh 15 mile (5th Oct) and the Dublin City Marathon (27th Oct). At the time, I decided on two......1) the National Half Marathon in Waterford because it may be years before it is so close to Cork again and 2) Cork to Cobh. Now 6 weeks later, it looks like I'll end up doing all 4 as I ended up doing the Cork Half after all and I have sent off my entry for the Dublin Marathon!! ;o) So this brings me neatly on to the 2 main points of this post...

1) Late entries.......After doing Waterford on the 7th, I was not sure if I would do the Cork Half on the 14th so I didn't bother pre-entering. In fact, I only made up my mind to do it at around 9:50am that morning ;o) When I got there, loads of other runners were entering on the day as well. There is nothing wrong with that except that it make life a bit difficult for the organisers as the entries take time to process and they are under pressure to get the race started on time. I was speaking to Mick Dooley of the Cork BHAA about this for the Cork to Cobh race and for them, entries on the day are even more of an issue. The thing is that they have to get t-shirts and goodie bags for everyone ready. If a lot of people enter on the day, they find it hard to estimate how many are needed. So, it will be a big help to them if you can get your entry off to Kevin Cummins asap. The entry form is HERE. Print it out and get those entries off.

2) Pace for the Cork to Cobh race........I sure that a lot of you who intend on doing Cork to Cobh will also be doing the Dublin Marathon 3 weeks later. Perhaps it is a little bit too close to actually race it but surely it is an ideal opportunity to try out that pace that you intend to use in the Marathon? If after all, you can run 15 miles at that pace and still feel comfortable at the finish, it bodes well for the full distance. If however, you get to Cobh exhausted then it tells you that you need to set a more realistic target.

The price for pre-entries is €15 and that includes a t-shirt. The closing date for pre-entries is next Friday, the 26th of September. Post them now.
Comments...
"Is there a good reason why one should run from Cork to Cobh instead of taking the train?
Run for Your LifeA recently released study has found that older runners live longer and have fewer disabilities than healthy non-runners. It may, in fact, be possible to outrun death -- and even the creeping ravages of time -- at least for a while. "It would make more sense if these races accepted credit cards or paypal instead of cheques, there'd be less handling for the organisers and make it easier for the entrants of the race that don't hold cheque books...........Anonymous"

Running for Temple Street Childrens Hospital in the Dublin City Marathon...
I received an e-mail recently from Jennifer Manning of Cork CUH asking me if I could mention the Temple Street Childrens Hospital on the blog in the run up to the Dublin Marathon. I know that a considerable number of runners from Cork and Munster will be running in the Marathon and perhaps some might consider raising funds for this very worthy cause. Jennifer sent on a link to the Temple Street Childrens Hospital website and the following text...

"This link gives potential participants information on how to register for the marathon and raise funds for Temple Street. My email address is also given as point of contact for anyone interested in undertaking this challenge for Temple Street. I will supply them with sponsor cards and further information on fundraising and the marathon, and I also provide Temple Street runners with marathon t-shirts."

Jennifer sent on 2 documents to me which I have now put up on a website so you can look at them.

Entries for the Cork Ladies Mini-Marathon 4 mile race...
This event which attracts thousands of walkers and runners takes place on Sunday, the 28th of September at 1pm. However, the closing date for online entries is next Friday, the 19th of September. The link for the online form is http://www.corkminimarathon.com/entry.asp

You can also post in your entry but it might be a bit late at this stage. Last year, they had a special office near Debenhams where you could enter but there is no mention of it this year on their website.

For any ladies not doing the Cork to Cobh race, you might be also interested in the Limerick Ladies Mini-Marathon (7km) on the 5th of October. More details on the Running in Munster site.

In the meantime, here is a little video clip from a ladies mini 'Mini-Marathon' in Australia.

Enjoy ;o)

Video Clips of the 2008 Cork Half Marathon....
Now on to the fun part! I'm afraid you will need a fast Internet connection like broadband if you want to watch these clips. Note that they were all taken near the 12 mile mark.

Clip Number 1.....(47 seconds long)...This clip shows the winner Sergiu Turea passing with a big lead.

**************

Clip No.2.........(42 seconds long)....This clip shows the 2nd man Colin Merritt passing. You might notice at the start of this clip the speed of the passing cars!! Heaven forbid that they might have to slow down for some runners. Looking at it, I'm kind of glad I was running in a group...safety in numbers and all that.

*************

Clip No.3.........(1m 55s long)......It shows roughly the 3rd to the 9th finisher passing.

************
Clip No.4......... (57 seconds long)....Shows the 11th to the 13th finisher passing.

**********

Clip No.5......... (1m 45s long).....Roughly shows the 14th to the 20th finisher passing.

*****************

Clip No.6.........(4m 46s long).....This long clip roughly shows those who finished in 21st to 62nd position. It starts off with some more looney drivers.

**********

Clip No.7.........(3m 11s long)......Roughly shows those runners who finished in 63rd to 87th position.

************

Clip No.8........(5m 35s long)......The last clip roughly shows those who finished in 88th to 150th position.

That's it for the moment. There may be additional video clips soon.

Results of the 'Mizuno' Cork Half Marathon - Sun 14th Sept 2008 (Updated Tues 16th Sept)
The weather forecast for this one looked very bleak with a big band of rain sweeping in from the West. In the end, the conditions were pretty good....just enough rain to keep things cool but not heavy enough to get soaked and miserable. Whatever about the weather conditions, it didn't seem to deter too many people as they got a big turn out of 508, a new record I presume? Looking back on previous years, here are some of the figures 2007-448, 2006-447, 2005-340, 2004-408, 2003-269.
A few people mentioned that their official times were out by a few seconds compared to the official times below. If this is the case, leave a comment below saying what you think the difference was. Looking at the times on the clock at the finish line (see photos below), the times on the results are about 8 to 9 seconds faster. (Please note that the results have now been updated by Ballycotton Running Promotions. 8 seconds have been added to the old times. The official times are now shown below)
As for the race itself, it was my first time actually running the half marathon over the Blarney route. There is no doubt about it but that pull up to Grenagh (4.7 to 6.2 miles) is tough going. However once it is out of the way, the last 6 miles or so are nearly all flat or slighty downhill. It may not be the fastest of courses but it is a lot nicer running out there in the countryside than inside in the city.
Note that the next long race coming up is the Cork BHAA 'Cork to Cobh' 15 mile road race in 3 weeks time on the 5th of October. I'll put up some details here on this blog as we get a bit closer.

Photos... (Updated Mon 15th Sept 1am)
I think there should be loads of photos for this one :o)

1st set.....166 photos taken by Joe Murphy of Eagle AC at the bridge around the 4 mile mark.
2nd set...271 photos taken by John Quigley of Eagle AC just before the 5 mile mark.
3rd set...This is a big set of 456 photos taken by John Quigley of Eagle AC at the finish line.

4th set....Irene Hartigan was at the 12 mile mark and took 198 photos. These ones are really good as you can zoom in an get a closer look if you want to. It's obvious from the facial expressions that a lot of people are beginning to tire.

Comments...???

"Great Race John. My official time was 9 seconds faster than my watch which in turn appeared to be about 3+ seconds faster than the clock as I passed under it - but then again at that stage in a race the sight may not be the best.........Grellan McGrath, Eagle AC"

"My watch time matched the clock at the finish. The official times look to be faster by 8 or 9 seconds as you say............Martin Fogarty, Eagle AC "

"Hi John, have to say I'm delighted with my time of 1.37.15 but by my watch, it was 1.37.21. That's over 20 minutes faster than last year. Also thank God for the weather, it was fantastic. Last year it was way too hot and I struggled with the heat. The rain didn't bother me at all. Must say I'm disappointed with the results format considering they put us down as male over 35's but no catergory in this age group. If it isn't there then put us down as male senior (something for St.Finbarrs to consider for next year). The race was well organised, plenty of stewards and water stations. All that's missing is the over 35's catergory for men which I hope St.Finbarrs will consider for next year......John Dunphy, Midleton AC.

"This half marathon also doubled up as the AAI Munster Half Marathon. There are prizes (medals) for individuals and clubs that entered this category. The O35 results are shown because they are relevant to this competition..........John Desmond"

"Thanks for all your help in getting information out before and after the 2008 Half Marathon. I note from your blog that there is a query regarding the M35 category. We did infact present prizes to the first three M35 (outside the top ten). We normally wouldn't do so but I felt the wording on our entry form this year gave the impression that it was a category in the men's race (words to the effect that "full range of prizes will be awarded in all categories" plus it included a box labelled "35" to tick). In normal circumstances this box would have a "w" attached to it to denote it as a women only category but this "w" was omitted in error this year. To avoid confusion and disapointment, we felt an onus to award the prizes to the to the M35's. I will check out the discrepancy between the timing systems with our time keeper teams and see if they can throw any light on it. Best wishes and thanks to every one who made the event such a success...........Cathal O'Connell, St.Finbarr's AC"

"Hi John, I had no idea that awards were given out to over 35's men as I did not attend the prize's, but delighted to hear they were....well done St Finbarrs AC..........John Dunphy, Midleton AC"

"Hi John.Going by the results in both half marathons recently, which did you consider tougher? You were only seven seconds faster in the Cork one than the Waterford one but almost 60 places higher finish. Must be some difference in the standard of running between both races......Anonymous"

"In terms of difficulty, I'd kind of rate them both the same. Cork had hills between 4.75 and 6.25 but there was a lot of downhill running for 6 miles which helped a lot. I would say I found them equally tough, I put the same level of effort into each and as you say, the time difference for me was only 7 seconds. As for the Waterford race, that was a National race. There were people from all over the country at it and they were all club runners. In Cork, the runners were more 'local' and a large part of the field were non-club runners who would tend to be mainly slower.....John Desmond"

"Thank you for answering my question John, it seems that we have an awful lot of runners here in Cork that just turn up out of the blue to do these kind of races and are probarley fun runners that train just to do this type of race and disapear for months on end again,as you know alot of BHAA races have grown in numbers over the last few years but i put it down to many people just looking to do one or two particular races in the year and this is fact as i have 2 friends that attended just 3 races so far this year and said how do you keep this up race after race to me. Well done on this blog and to you for very impressive times in both half marathons..........Anonymous "

Helpers wanted for the Cork Half-Marathon...
St.Finbarr's AC are still a little short of helpers for the race on Sunday. They need people to help out with things like stewards for traffic control, water stations, etc. Perhaps if you are not doing the race, you might consider helping out? If so, contact the chief steward Marian Lyons at 087 1229055 for further information.

Weather forecast for the Cork Half-Marathon in Blarney...(Updated Sun 14th 9 am)
With about 2 hours to go, the forecast looks bleak. It now looks like that there will a slow moving warm front over the country. This is likely to bring peristent rain or drizzle rather than just showers. The current forecast from Met Eireann is that "Spells of heavy rain developing in the western half of the country this morning may lead to localised flooding. The rain will spread east as the day goes on"

This is the Infra Red image from this morning. The warm front is going to over the country for most of the day. I think you can safely forget about getting any sunshine during the race!!

Here is the rainfall radar at 8am. Persistent rain is now approaching from the South West and should be in Blarney for most of the race.
The temperature is expected to be a mild 15 deg C with a light breeze from the South. This means that the wind will be behind the runners for the first half of the race and into their faces for the 2nd half.

Comments...
"According to Metcheck http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/today.asp?zipcode=cork we are getting around 10mm of rain for the Half tomorrow - not going to stop me going though! :o).........Sean O'Mahony"
"Thanks for all the weather updates John. Pity its not going to be like last year...Just finished breakfast now and it dosent look too bad but its on the way.@sean that metcheck site is pretty good. Looks better than met.ie .Looking forward to the race now :-) ........Derek"

Preview of the Cork Half Marathon - Sun 14th Sept (11am)
The big event this week is of course the 'Mizuno' Cork Half-Marathon in Blarney on Sunday, the 14th of September. The closing date for the cheaper entries closed last Saturday. You can still enter on the day for €25 before 10:30am.

Directions / Start / Finish..........This race is run over the quiet roads to the North of Blarney, about 10 kms to 15 kms to the North West of Cork City. The easiest way to get there is from the N20 Cork to Limerick/Mallow road. Just take the slip road for Blarney. As you drive alongside the walkway, take the first left and then the next right after that. See map above. Entries will be taken at the GAA grounds.
The start of the race is very close to the GAA grounds. The finish is about 800 metres away on the other side of Blarney.

Course....The course is made up of 3 seperate sections....1) the road North from Blarney, 2) the loop and 3) the road back to Blarney.
1) From the GAA grounds, you run through part of Blarney and then North towards Waterloo. After about 800 metres, you should pass the finish line of the race. You carry on for another 1.5 miles with the woods and the river on your right. At the next road junction, you cross right over the bridge and carry on along a tree covered road until you reach a road junction near the 4.7 mile mark. All the while, you will have been running alongside the main N20 road which runs parallel to this small road and climbing slowly all the way. In fact, you will have gained about 50 metres in altitude from the start (30m) to the road junction at 4.7 miles (80m).

2) This is where the loop starts and where things start getting tough. At the junction at 4.7 miles, you stay left and the road gets steeper. Past the 5 mile mark and keep climbing. It eases a bit, you veer off right at the next junction and then start climbing again until it flattens out around the 6 mile mark just as you approach the village of Grenagh. In that last 1.3 miles, you wil have gone from 80 metres to over 160 metres in altitude....by far, the toughest section of the race.
Then it's through the village and take a sharp right. Here, the road drops rapidly as you lose 50 metres of altitude over the next half mile until you are near the 7 mile mark. From here, it is more or less flat or slightly downhill until you reach the road junction again near the 9 mile mark and the end of the loop.

3) This is one section where runners will pass each other....the slower runners heading towards the 4.7 mile mark as the faster runners return from the 9 mile mark. For the last 4.1 miles, you are basically retracing your footsteps. It is mostly flat or slightly downhill as far as the finish just before Blarney.

Overall.......a reasonably hilly course with a tough 1.3 mile section near the middle. If you want to have a closer look at the course, I have put it up on the MapMyRun website.
Last year, they got 448 entries for this race. You can see the results and comments for the 2007 event HERE.

Comments...
"This race in Waterford was excellent, with fabulous weather for a change, and a nice, steady course. If it's held at this venue again next year it will be a good thing, as it drew a much larger entry than Letterkenny last year......Maggie"
"Agreed Maggie, it was very well organised. However, they have to move it around the country as it would not be fair for people up the country to travel so far every year. Considering that it will be probably be a few years before it comes this far South again, it was well worth doing considering it was on our doorstep.........John Desmond"

Question......Should there be an Over 35 Mens section in all road races???
Some time back, John Dunphy of Midleton AC left a message on the blog suggesting that all road races should have an 'Over 35' section for men. At present, men have to be at least 40 to qualify for prizes in the Veterans section in each race. For AAI races like the 'County Road' or 'Cross Country' races, anyone aged 35 or over is classified as a Veteran or Master runner. In most road races at present, there is an Over 35 section for women.

Case for it........More interesting for any men in the 35 to 39 age category? Or even for runners who are 33 to 34 knowing that they can compete in that section soon? Even handed approach....if it is there for women, why not for men?

Case against it.......Additional costs for organisers??? Leading to higher overall entry fees??? Any demand for it??? Enough categories already???

This is John Dunphy's case for it....
I think it's about time that the mens over 35's became a catergory in all local road races. I would imagine that there would be some good competition in this age group. It's really annoying that in all the local races that they have this age catergory only for women but class mens over 35's as male senior. Race organizer's take note....be fair....I'm pushing from now on for this age catergory to be a part of each event so that mens over 35's have an opportunity to compete rather than making up the number's at local race's. John I appeal to you to put a new poll on the blog asking should all road races have a mens over 35's catergory in the interest of fairness.......John Dunphy, Midleton AC

Do you agree or disagree? Should there be an over 35 category for men at all races??
