A look at the Junior parkrun numbers in Co Cork - 2023 to 2025

Back in March of 2026, Aideen Coleman sent me a message to say that the Junior parkrun in Ballincollig for 4-14 year olds had over 300 finishers, more than the local 5k parkrun the previous day. I put up a post about it HERE.

After that, I was thinking about all the other parkruns in Co Cork. How are they getting on? What are their numbers like? Are they all growing like Ballincollig?

First off, there are eight 2km junior parkruns in Co Cork and the locations are shown on the map above. I calculated the average number of finishers per week for each event for 2023, 2024 and 2025 and I plotted them as a chart.

Ballincollig was the only event to show growth for two years in a row. Out of the eight junior parkruns, six recorded a decline in 2025. Dunmanway (Dromleena Lawn), Togher (Clashduv), Ballinlough (Nursery Drive) and Haulbowline all showed a large drop in 2025.

I asked Aideen why the Ballincollig junior parkrun is so popular compared to the rest and she said that having a 5k parkrun at the same location on a Saturday is a huge help. 

There is a certain amount of synergy between the two events in that the 5k parkrun participants are much more likely to be aware that there is a junior parkrun at the same location on Sunday and might bring their kids along. The 5k parkrun can also help in terms of being a pool for potential volunteers to help out at the junior event.

It's probably no accident that Ballincollig and Mallow are the two largest junior parkruns in Co Cork and both have 5k parkuns on Saturday. Aideen gave the example of the Tralee parkrun so I looked at those numbers...

Sure enough, Tralee seems to be doing quite well and compares favourably to the numbers for the junior parkruns in Co Cork.

Do numbers really matter???... Some may argue that large numbers don't really matter and they'd have a point. As long as there are enough volunteers and the event goes ahead week after week then that's fine.

It is probably fair to say however that reasonable numbers do matter. The more children taking part means more parents in attendance and the larger pool of people from which to draw volunteers.

In conclusion... Looking at the stats, it's very much a mixed picture for the junior parkruns in Co Cork. While Ballincollig and Mallow seem to be doing pretty well, some of the others seem to be in decline.

Looking at some events, they have had to cancel events from time to time due to a lack of volunteers. If the decline in numbers continues then it seems likely that some events may cease in the future.

If anyone is interested in trying to boost their numbers then it might be worth contacting the team behind the Ballincollig parkrun to see what they are doing right.

Comparison of Cork 10-mile races - Spring 2026

The chart above shows the relative sizes of the 10-mile road races held in Co Cork in the Spring of 2026.

The chart starts in 2017 when things were very different. The largest 10-miler in Munster back then was the Ballycotton 10m with almost 3000 finishers. The Dungarvan 10m was then the second largest in Munster with just over 1900 finishers. The Mallow 10m back then was the second largest 10-miler in Co Cork and the third largest in Munster.

With the demise of the Ballycotton race in 2017, the other 10-milers got a boost in numbers. Dungarvan went on to become the largest 10-miler in Munster and now has almost 3000 finishers. The figures for 2019 show Mallow reaching an all-time high while Cobh dropped a bit with the appearance of the Kinsale 10m on the scene.

If we look at 2019 then it was a case of Mallow having a clear lead over the rest. If we fast forward to 2026 then there's not a whole lot between the top three.

Looking at the growth trajectories, the Cobh 10-mile may well become the largest 10-miler in Co Cork by the end of the decade.

Impact of the 'Women in Sport' campaign on local parkruns in Cork - March 2026

In the lead up to the 5k parkruns last weekend, there was a fair amount of publicity promoting parkrun and 'Women in Sport'. I was wondering if there was any impact from the publicity? Did the female numbers increase?

I looked at the number of male and female finishers for the 11 parkruns in Co Cork for the 28th of February and the 7th of March 2026. The results suggest that the number of female participants increased by about 4% on the 7th of March compared to the previous week.

There are some caveats however...

The stats don't include the 'UKNOWN' finishers in the results. I assume the male/female percentages for the unknowns is the same as the overall percentages but it's impossible to be sure.

These are the stats for just two Saturdays so the sample size is small. A 4% increase is pretty small and some of that may due to a natural week to week variability.

Out of the eleven 5k parkruns in Cork, female participation was up in 6, down in 4 and the same for 1. This means that there wasn't a universal increase for all events even though the overall average increased.

For the 7th of March, these are the 11 events in order of female participation...

1. Bere Island at 74.2%, up from 61.5% the previous week.

2. Castlehaven at 70.6%, up from 38.1% the previous week.

3. Glengarriff at 62.9%, up from 56.6% the previous week.

4. Youghal at 56.9%, up from 45.9% the previous week.

5. Mallow at 51.1%, down from 52.3% the previous week.

6. Ballincollig at 48.1%, up from 46.8% the previous week.

7. Tramore Valley Park at 46.4%, down from 49.6% the previous week.

8. Midleton at 45.4%, up from 44.5% the previous week.

9. Macroom at 43.8%, down from 44.1% the previous week.

10. Clonakilty at 40.4%, up from 35.6% the previous week.

11. Glen River at 40%, the same as the previous week.

It's interesting that the top 3 in terms of female participation were all in west Cork. While the numbers at Castlehaven are very low and it doesn't take much to have a huge variation in the percentages, Bere Is and Glengarriff were still at 1 and 2 the previous week.

Again, it's worth noting that the stats above are from just two Saturdays and a lot more data points are needed to get an accurate picture. It does though suggest a trend in the differences between events.

In conclusion... I started looking at the stats trying to see if the 'Women in Sport' campaign had any impact and the answer for that question was not a completely conclusive 4%. 

While looking at the data, another question popped up... why is the female participation in some events higher than others? I'm not sure there is a simple answer.

Q. What about a night time running series in Cork???

As we reach March 2026, a number of successful evening run series in Munster have come to an end. There was one in Fethard in Tipperary during February and there were two popular series in Dungarvan and Waterford City which ran throughout the winter.

There used to be a evening 3k series in Midleton in east Cork and it was last held in February of 2011... results.

The series was organised by East Cork AC and they decided at their AGM later in the year to discontinue the series as the numbers were too large for a residential area.

That means the last evening series in Cork was 15-years ago. My question now is if it's time for a new evening series???

First of all, let's look at the evening series that have recently finished.

Fethard... This was a 3k series was organised by Fethard AC and it was held on the four Thursday evenings in the month of February at 7:30pm. The entry fee was €25 for the series or €8 per night.

Dungarvan... This one is the largest evening leagues in the country and is organised by West Waterford AC. They have a choice of a long and short course and it is held on 11-evenings from November to February. The series costs €45.

In the last event, they had 188 finishers in the short race and 283 in the long event. The series has been running for 31 years and has featured on RTE television.

Waterford City... This one is organised by Waterford Road Runners and runs for 12-weeks from November to February. It costs €50 for the series and that includes a t-shirt. Their numbers have ranged from 71 to 187 finishers with an average of 126.

The photo above shows the turn around point on the course which is on a wide footpath.

What about Cork???... Surely if they can organise successful evening series in Tipperary and Waterford then it can be done in several locations in Co Cork.

One obvious issue is a quiet location... industrial estates? Greenways? Wide footpaths?

Insurance? Permission? Permits?... There are bound to be issues but it's already happening in other areas. I think there is a big market there for a number of 3k series with low entry fees. No prizes, just accurate timing for a basic entry fee.

Would a 3k on the Midleton Greenway be possible at twilight in March or October? Joe Walsh walkway in Clonakilty? Clare O'Leary Walk in Bandon?

There must surely be loads of suitable locations.

UPCOMING 40th ANNIVERSARY of THE GREAT RACE, RIVERSTICK, 1986 - 1999... by Tom Scriven

Riverstick Athletic Club was based in the village of that name, along the Cork - Kinsale road and in the main attracted athletes from the Ballymartle / Belgooly / Riverstick areas. The Club was affiliated to The National Athletic and Cycling Association of Ireland, (NACAI) a former Association representing Athletic and Cycling Clubs in Ireland.

The Club organised a Spring season Cycle Race and an Annual Summer Sports Day which in the past included cycle races on grass as well as Track and Field athletic events. The Club organised Cross Country Race events on behalf of the Cork County Board as one of the affiliated Clubs on a rotational basis.

In many Clubs in that era, there was a cross-over between the NACAI and the GAA, in Provincial or National Championships, members or Clubs represented their counties and wore colours similar to their GAA counterparts. Many of the sports days were held in the local GAA Clubs sportsgrounds while the Cross- Country races were held in a nearby farm, very often on the farm of a committee member. Traditionally, the Tricolour flag would be displayed at the event.

As the popularity of athletics increased in the late 70s and 80s, a second sports day, held in Belgooly, was added to the Programme of Events, a Summer 10 Mile Road Race together with a Stephens Day 4 Mile Road Race were organized to reflect the increasing interest in Road Races Nationally.

In February1986, a further event was introduced, a Cycle/Road Race Biathlon, dubbed 'The Great Race'. The distances of the cycling and running sections of the Biathlon were chosen to attract cyclists and runners. The 1986 event, was held through the local Riverstick Wood tracks incorporating an extended triple cycle loop followed by a double running loop of the wood tracks. The 1987 event used a new course, a double 7 Mile cycling loop along the Glounagalt and Heathbourne Hall circuit followed by a 5.3 Road Race on an inner circuit. 

The event was transferred from a Spring date to an Autumn one to allow cyclists and athletes participate at the close of the cycling and athletics seasons. The traditional Open, Junior and Veteran category winners were awarded prizes, while a Perpetual Trophy was presented to the winner annually.

Prize winners included Brian Linehan, Blarney CC. in 1989, fresh from his record breaking cycle of the Cork - Dublin distance.

The event was held annually up to 1999, (The 1988 event was not held due to a Compliance issue), changing trends and increasing compliance aspects resulted in a discontinuing of the event. Participating in Road Races and Triathlons increased in popularity attracting entrants from biathlon style events.

The event is still fondly remembered, the late Paddy O'Donoghue was a tireless Organiser. Paddy's father, Maurice, was a Founder member and Life-President of the Riverstick Club, the event celebrated his memory.

Participants were in the main cyclists or runners and despite some specific training often found the changeover difficult, resulting in a short distance of shuffling style running until the normal striding style was restored. The traditional tea and refreshments provided after the event help restore the normal walking gait.

On any future trip through Riverstick, spare a thought for the participants of that initial Great Race through the notoriously hilly Riverstick Wood Circuit of nearly 40 years ago! It was indeed a 'Great Race'!'

Notice: Churchtown 10-mile road race - Sat 15th Nov 2025

The Churchtown 10-mile road race in north Cork is coming up this year on Saturday 15th November 2025. The race starts at 10am.

Update - 14th Nov - Please that due to all the recent rain, the course this year will be two 5-mile loops. 

After a successful two years, this will be the third edition of this race. Please note that entries close on  Wednesday 12th November at 11:45pm.

Churchtown is located just 4kms west of the N20 Cork to Limerick road so access couldn't be easier.

Numbers for the Cork Senior Cross Country Championships - Sun 28th Sept 2025

The 2025 Cork Senior Cross Country Championships were held near Coachford on Sunday 29th Sept 2025. In the Senior Men's race, there were 46 finishers while there were 17 finishers in the Senior Women's race.

The chart above shows the number of finishers over the last 10-years.

There were 6 full men's teams while there were 3 full women's teams which meant at least this year, the podium places were filled. In 2024, there was no women's team in 3rd place due to the low numbers.

For context, there are about 55 athletic clubs in Co Cork with 10 or more adult members.

What is HYROX?

I was recently updating the event calendar on the blog and I came across some events called 'HYROX'. I can't remember seeing that name before so I was wondering what was it all about?

It turns out that HYROX is a sport which involves doing eight 1km runs with various exercises at the end of each km

This is the usual format...
1 km of running & 1km of SkiErg
1 km of running & 50m of sled push[21]
1 km of running & 50m of sled pull
1 km of running & 80m of burpee broad jump
1 km of running & 1km of rowing
1 km of running & 200m of kettlebell farmer carry
1 km of running & 100m of sandbag walking lunge
1 km of running & 100 wall balls

It first started in Germany in 2018 and it has now spread to many countries. 

Considering that the event is indoors and in loops, it's not hard to see why it might be more spectator friendly than say a road race or triathlon.

There is a two day HYROX event coming up at Ballymaloe in east Cork on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September 2025.

Results of the Grocers 5k & 10k Fun Run at Mallow racecourse - Sat 17th May 2025

Martina Kiely is the first woman home in the Grocers Run 10k

The Grocers 5k & 10k charity Fun Run at Mallow racecourse was held on Sat 17th May 2025.

In the 10k, there were 88 finishers which is up on the 55 in 2024. In the 5k, there were 81 finishers compared to 75 last year.

Top 10-mile races in Cork for the Spring of 2025

Now that Spring is over, let's have a look at the top 10-milers in Cork so far for 2025.

After a flat period, the Mallow 10-mile road race in late March grew 23% to cement its position as the top 10-mile in Co Cork.

The Cobh 10-mile at the start of April continues to grow and is now in second place.

The Kinsale 10-mile had to deferred from February to April and it now drops back to third place.

The new race was the Midleton Greenway 10-mile at the start of March and posted a respectable 540 finishers for its first outing.

It'll be interesting to see if there is a growth in the 10-mile numbers in 2026 or are we now at a peak?

Photos of the Breast Cancer Ireland Very Pink Run in Cork - Sun 8th Oct 2023

There seemed to be a big turnout for the Very Pink Run event in Bishopstown in Cork City with somewhere in the region of a 1000+ runners and walkers completing the 5k and 10k events. The 5k course was the one used for the Rebel Run 5k with the 10k participants completing two loops.

It's hard to know for sure how many took part as the event wasn't timed and all of the proceeds instead went to Breast Cancer Ireland.

Notice: Very Pink Run in Bishopstown - Sun 8th Oct 2023

Breast Cancer Ireland are holding their Very Pink Run this year at MTU in Bishopstown on Sunday 8th October 2023.

There is a choice of 5k and 10k distances, the run starts at 12-noon and the entry fee is €31 for adults. All proceeds go to this charity.

The runs are not timed but they seem to be using the same accurate courses as the Rebel Run so participants can time themselves.

Results & Photos of the Echo Women's mini-marathon - Sun 17th Sept 2023

The Echo women's mini-marathon was held on Sunday 17th Sept 2023 on what was an overcast but dry day. A total of 2664 runners and walkers crossed the finish line this year, a drop of 8% on the figure for 2022.

The first woman was Lizzie Lee pictured above in a time of 17m 19s, just 7-seconds ahead of Hannah Steeds in second place.

Numbers... A post event article in the Echo claimed the following... "The annual Mini-Marathon got underway at 12 noon on Kennedy Quay and between 4,000 and 5,000 people participated in today’s event."

This is way more than the actual number of 2,664 recorded by the chip timing company crossing the finish line.

The numbers for the Echo Women's mini-marathon are shown above and there has been a dramatic drop since 2019.

Not so long ago, the entry fee for this event was down around €10. Now it's €20-€25 which is a lot considering the participants get nothing like a dry fit running top and none of the entry fee goes to charity.

Over the years, the participants of the Echo Women's mini-marathon have generated millions for charity. By contrast, the organisers give nothing to charity.

I suspect a lot of women are questioning the point of paying €20-€25 for an entry fee when they can just do a run for free and give that money to a charity instead.

A snapshot of the junior 2k parkruns in Cork - Sun 27th Aug 2023

The inaugural 2km junior parkrun in Clashduv Park in Togher in Cork City was held on Sunday 27th Aug 2023 with 46 participants. For a wet Sunday morning, it was a good turnout.

In the graphic above, you can see the numbers for all seven junior parkruns in Co Cork on the 27th of August 2023.

The Dromlena Lawn junior parkrun in Dunmanway in West Cork had 43 finishers and this was just their 3rd event. Their long term average is 45. Looking at the population stats, there are 17 larger towns in Co Cork so there must be scope for more junior parkruns in the county.

The Mallow Castle junior parkrun now has 12 events with 38 taking part last Sunday. It's long term average is 63.

St Mary's Health Campus junior parkrun had 26 finishers for their 17th event. Their long term average 51 but has been very low on occasions in the last few weeks. For an event in Gurranabraher on the northside of Cork City, it needs more support.

The Nursery Drive junior parkrun in Ballinlough had 26 finishers with a long term average of 51. It was their 22nd outing.

The Ballincollig junior parkrun is well established now with 114 events under its belt. They had 82 finishers in the local regional park with a long term average of 97.

The oldest junior parkrun in Co Cork is in Cobh and it's now on its 176th event. It had 17 finishers which is lower than their long term average of 51.

All of these junior parkruns are for 4-14-year olds, are completely free and are held at 9:30am every Sunday morning. You can find links to all of the events on this page.

Approval given for new Greenway in Cork City from Kinsale Road Roundabout to Spur Hill

Planning for a new Greenway from the Kinsale Road roundabout to Eagle Valley was approved at a Cork City Council meeting last Monday (10th July 2023). The project is expected to cost €5-million and will be fully funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA).

Subject to the tendering process, work is scheduled to start mid-2024 and finish mid to late 2025.

The route is shown above in more detail. On the far left, there is a 1.1km section connecting the Chetwynd Reservoir to a point close to the Bandon Road Roundabout and Dunnes Stores. This goes through Eagle Valley estate.

Going East from the reservoir, it's 450m to the Spur Hill Road... 1.2kms to the Togher Road... 1.7kms to the Lehenaghmore Road... 2kms to Forge Hill... and 2.9kms to the Kinsale Road Roundabout.

The main 2.9km section of Greenway follows the route of the old Cork to Bandon railway line which closed in 1961. As might be expected with all railway lines, the gradient is very gradual. The difference in altitude over the 2.9km section is about 35-metres which works out as a gentle 1.2% slope going west.

The screenshot above shows the section where the road to the reservoir goes under the road to Spur Hill. All of the old bridges are still in place and just need to be cleaned up.

Some sections of the planned route are already in use as walkways that are mainly used by locals. These will now be improved and widened to 4-metres with a tarmac surface.

Analysis... In itself, 2.9kms is not a huge section of Greenway but it should be seen as the start of a much bigger project. On the eastern side near the Kinsale Road Roundabout, more work will need to be done to get a Greenway connection into the Tramore Valley Park. Looking west, there are plans for a 36km Greenway linking Cork City to Bandon and Kinsale which will open up the area for walkers, runners and cyclists.

The next obvious section is to connect the Chetwynd Reservoir to the Chetwynd Viaduct over the Bandon Road and across to Waterfall. The map below shows the old railway line to Bandon which has two tunnels along the route.

It's really slow progress but at least things are going in the right direction.

Results of the Grant Thornton 5k in Cork - Tues 13th June 2023

This year's Grant Thornton 5k road race in Cork City has seen a jump in numbers with 642 finishers, about the same as back in 2016. While not as good as 2017, 2018 or 2019, it was well up on the figure for 2022.

This commercial race is used as a fundraiser by Athletics Ireland and at €35 per individual, it's the most expensive 5k race on the calendar.

It was unfortunate that it was held in more or less the same location just 24 hours before the Cork BHAA Musgraves 5k race which was on the calendar since the start of the year.

New Junior 2k parkruns planned for Togher, Mallow & Dunmanway in 2023

In the last fortnight, we've seen two new 2k junior parkruns for 4-14 year olds start in Ballinlough and Gurranabraher in Cork City. These join the existing events in Cobh and Ballincollig to bring the current total of junior parkruns in Co Cork to four.

In a previous post, I outlined the plans for a new junior 2k parkrun in Clashduv Park in Togher.

The latest news is that there are plans for another two junior 2k parkruns in Mallow and Dunmanway. These projects generally take quite a while to get up and running but hopefully there will be seven junior 2k parkruns in Cork by the end of 2023.

The 5k parkrun in Tramore Valley Park in Cork City restarts 16th July 2022!

Update 15th July 2022: It's official, the 5k parkrun in the Tramore Valley Park in Cork City is restarting on Saturday the 16th of July 2022 at 9:30am!

The team of volunteers have been training at other parkruns to get used to the system and this is their first outing together. They were hoping to keep it a bit low key to try and keep the numbers down for the first running so that they don't get swamped but once the Echo announced it then that was the end of that!

Just remember that this will be held every Saturday morning at 9:30am, there's no rush to turn up at the first one.

Update 30th June 2022: It now looks as if the 5k parkrun in Tramore Valley Park in Cork City will be restarting in late July or early August of 2022. A team of volunteers has been assembled and they are undergoing training at other local parkruns at the moment.

As with all parkruns, they'd be delighted to have more volunteers so send an email to tramorevalley AT parkrun DOT com if you want to help out.

Remember that once it restarts, it will be on every Saturday at 9:30am.

Some good news! The 5k parkun in Tramore Valley Park in Cork City will be restarting in 2022.

This 5k parkrun started back in September of 2015 and just 15 events were held there. The final one in January of 2016 attracted a huge field of 533 runners thanks to the hype from Operation Transformation.
