Results & Photos of the Kinsale 10-mile road race - Sun 25th Feb 2024

First place finish for Tim O'Donoghue of East Cork AC

Conditions were wet and windy for this years Kinsale 10-mile road race with 927 runners crossing the finish line. I would assume quite a number of runners may have given this race a skip because of the rain so the 17% increase in numbers this year is all the more impressive.

Guest Post: The Greatest Post never written ...by Pat Walsh

** The Greatest Post never written **

The plan was simple.

The collective wisdom of the best sporting coaches of the last 50 years.

The melodic inspiration of Sia and the Lyrics of her songs that help us move.

The evocative descriptions of nature from the great Patrick Kavanagh that mean so much as we run the roads.

Marry them all together and I will get something special.

Crank up the laptop and get writing, this is the one.

Sports Journalist of the Year beckons. A guest spot of the RTE panel for the Olympics awaits, push over a bit there Rob and Sonia…

And then....‘Happy Hour -Two Cocktails for the price of one’ was all I could hear.

I woke from my slumber on a sun-bed in Lanzarote.

A vision in a dream was all it was.

‘Could I revive within me her symphony and song’

Alas, The great post was never written but the aperol spritz wasn’t too bad in fairness as a consolation.

I could claim I’m on a warm weather training camp in preparation for some major sporting occasion but my Mother told me don’t tell lies. Sun, sand, sea, some jogging, some scoops, some relaxation.

I do promise to get back to some proper posts next week.

Have a lovely weekend and I will do my best to enjoy myself.

Notice: The Great Railway Run 25km - Sun 21st Apr 2024

The annual Great Railway Run from Cork to Carrigaline will be held this year on Sunday the 21st of April 2024

The 25km run will start at 9:30am in Centre Park Road and the route skirts the shores of Cork Harbour. The race will finish in Carrigaline at the Lions Youth Centre on Church Road.

Entries: You can enter online HERE

Route... The run will roughly follow the route of the old Cork, Blackrock and Passage Railway which ran from 1850 until 1932. For a large part of the run, the route will follow the old railway line that skirts the shores of Cork Harbour.

The route shown below is approximate for the moment as some changes may be needed due to roadworks on the Marina section.

More details on the event website.

There are two things that stand out for me about this event.

1) Point to Point... Most race routes take the form of some sort of loop where the start and finish points are near each other. This is one of the very few that goes from point to point. There's something special about starting an event in Cork City and ending up down in Carrigaline.

2) Prep for the Cork City Marathon... The Great Railway Run comes 6-weeks before the Cork City Marathon and it's a good opportunity to try out your planned marathon pace. Do a short warm up before the event and then run the 25kms are your marathon pace. You should be reasonably comfortable by the time you get to the finish line. If not, you might need to revise your plans. It's also a great training session as part of your marathon preparation.

25K Prizes...
€3000 in prize money sponsored by Phelans Pharamacy. Prizes will be awarded for best overall placings as well as for age categories. Strictly one prize per entrant. The Joe West perpetual trophy will be awarded to the fastest male and female in the 25K race. Cash prizes will be as follows:

Men Overall: 1st €500, 2nd €250, 3rd €120, 4th €75
Men Categories: Wheelchair, M40, M45, M50, M55, M60, M65 - 1st in each category €50

Women Overall: 1st €500, 2nd €250, 3rd €125, 4th €75
Women Categories: Wheelchair, W40, W45, W50, W55, W60, W65 - 1st in each category €50

The prize giving will be held after the race at approximately 12:45pm in the Carrigaline Lions Youth Centre on Church Road.

Guest Post: Running, Racing, Participating ...by Pat Walsh

 ** Running, Racing, Participating **

Recently I attended my first parkrun in over 4 years and followed that with my first BHAA 5k in about the same length of time.

Why did that happen that I fell away?

Covid in 2020 changed a lot of things for us all and I just got out of the habit of going along. My fault and my fault alone as I just never mustered the drive or enthusiasm to get going again. I had been taking part in the big 10mile races and half-marathons but totally neglected my local – on my doorstep – runs.

2024 I resolved to fix this. The parkrun was lovely. Such a good atmosphere. Nice people, no pressure, no one really cared about times. I had lovely company CO’B. You can be anonymous if you want to. There was buggies and dogs and walkers and smiles and encouragement. There was no prizes, no fuss. I can be certain this applies to all parkruns in the country. Oh yes and it is FREE to enter. The organisation is superb.

The BHAA 5K in Little Island last Sunday was equally enjoyable. The day was good, the welcome was friendly, the runners were in great mood.

“Good to see you, best of luck.
Take it handy, it is early in the Year yet.
Lovely morning in February for the shorts and t-shirt.”

The race itself was ok. Game face on with a smile and just do the best you can. Thanks AG for the company.

Afterwards

“Fair play, well done.
Great to be finished.
Looking forward to the next one.
Are you going for a cuppa?”

No one mentioned times. These are pressures we put on ourselves when in fact no one else really cares. Fellow runners will support you whether good or bad so why then do so many people not run due to worries and anxieties.

I attended these races, I didn’t kill myself racing. I enjoyed myself and the occasion. I lived in the moment, in the day. In fact each race was a PB for the day I ran, as that particular day will never occur again. There will be other runs and races but each day is unique and special.

We love the City and Big Town races with thousands of people that cost a fortune. There is fun and enjoyment locally in low key races that cost very little or you can run free.

Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated

Running in Cork Newsletter - 16th February 2024

Running in Cork Newsletter - 16th February 2024

Looking through the results of the last week, the one that really stood out for me was the IMRA Slí Chorcaí events. If we were to go back 10 years ago, the IMRA events were to be honest pretty boring. Run up the side of a mountain and run back down again. Some are still in that format and some still like those but they have limited appeal. In the last decade, IMRA have introduced a much wider range of events.

These include more trail runs in woods which makes it more attractive to people wishing to try them out to see what they're like. They introduced trail runs at night and I remember well doing a half-marathon in the Ballyhouras passing farmhouses at 2 o'clock in the morning. The recent Slí Chorcaí event was another example of a novel event with the participants starting in Ballyvourney and ending up near Drimoleague in West Cork. There are plenty of events like this in the UK that get big numbers and I'm sure with these type of events in West Cork could get even greater numbers if more people found out about them.

I also added quite a few events to the race calendar yesterday as more and more 2024 events are starting to appear. There are a noticeable albeit small number of road races that have opted out of getting a Athletics Ireland permit and avoiding their €2 'one-day licence'.

Weekend Weather: For the second weekend in a row, we have two contrasting days again. On Saturday, a weather front will cross the country resulting quite a bit of rain. The question is what time will it arrive and different computer models give slightly different results. The rain is coming in from the west and it's likely that the parkrun on Bere Island will be a wet affair while the one in Youghal might be dry. Again, it depends on the time the rain arrives and the further east the parkrun is, the better. Other than the parkruns, there are a few events up the country with rain probably hitting the 5-mile in Lisdoonvarna while the other events in Leinster will probably be dry.

For Sunday, the rain should have passed and we should have a ridge of high pressure keeping things dry. Other than some surface water on the roads, it should be dry for the day.

Weekend events: Other than the parkruns on Saturday, there is a 5-miler in Lisdoonvarna and a big Operation Transformation 5k in the Phoenix Park. Locally, the main running events are on the Sunday. The main one in Cork is the Carrigaline 5-mile organised by Eagle AC at 11am. In Cloyne, there is 4k at 9:30am. In north Cork, there is an IMRA trail race in Rahan Woods near Mallow while there is also a 5k run in Doneraile Park.

There is a selection of events on offer elsewhere as well. As always, see the event calendar... https://corkrunning.blogspot.com/p/calendar.html

Parkrun News:

Clashduv Junior parkrun cancelled: The 2km Junior parkrun at Clashduv which was due to be held on Sunday 18th of February has had to be cancelled due to a lack of volunteers. This is I believe due to the fast that some of the regulars are missing due to the mid-term break. It's just a reminder that all parkruns need a large pool of volunteers that be called on rather than having to depend on the same few people week after week.

Parkrun stats: In last weeks Newsletter, I mentioned how the parkrun organisation had removed some of the stats from their website. This has caused a bit of a storm in the UK and the Guardian had a article on how a right-wing think thank was trying to get the parkrun organisation defunded. See HERE

Tramore Valley Park: The Irish Guide Dogs will be at Tramore Valley parkrun on Saturday 17th Feb 2024. The organisers write.. "If you have a green T-shirt you might like to wear it to show support for the charity"

New parkruns in the pipeline: For those of you way beyond the borders of the real capital, there are two new 5k parkruns starting soon. One is in Bettytown in Co Meath and the other one is in Tubbercurry, Co Sligo.

Last weekend: Last week at parkrun in Ireland, there were...139 events & 15,147 walkers, joggers, runners and volunteers.

Race News:

Kinsale 10m: The organisers of the Kinsale 10-mile road race have announced that their race which is on the 25th of February has now sold out.

Belfast Marathon: The 2024 Belfast City Marathon is coming up on Sunday 5th May and the organisers are reporting that there are only 150 places left for the marathon.

Achill Half nearly full: The Achill Half-Marathon & 10k will be held this year on Saturday 6th July 2024. Despite the fact that it's still five months away, the organisers have said that all of the entries are nearly gone.

Calendar update... I added a number of events to the calendar over the last few days. There's plenty to choose from if you're willing to travel. See https://corkrunning.blogspot.com/p/calendar.html

In Other News:

New Galway Trailrunning Group: In terms of trail races nationally in Ireland, the majority are in Munster and Leinster. One obvious omission every year is the lack of events in Connaught which is surprising considering all the mountains in Connemara. A new trail running group has now been established in Galway and that should help establish the sport more in this region.

Six simple tips for healthier joints from the experts: The Guardian

Midleton Greenway to open reminder: The first section of the Midleton to Youghal Greenway is supposed to open on Thursday 7th of March 2024. The section is question goes from Midleton to Mogeely and is about 8kms in length which is pretty significant.

Half-Marathons in Ireland: I was hoping to send out a list of some of the upcoming half-marathons in Ireland to the Newsletter subscribers this week but I ran out of time. At the moment, I can see that there are 80 on the island and there will be no doubt be a few more popping up in the second half of the year.

Training Programmes: I'll have training programmes for the Cork Half-Marathon starting soon. Options are 16-weeks from the 12th of February and 14-weeks from the 26th of February. More info ...

Guest Post: Report on the Great Island Cross Cup... by Trevor Cummins

The inaugural Great Island Cross Cup got off to a flying start when held in Cuskinny Court, Cobh, on Wednesday, February 7th 2024.

All six of the Cork Harbour island based primary schools were represented on a day where many of the 250 participants were enjoying their first experience of cross country running.
