Results of the Cork AAI Senior Cross Country Race - Sun 30th Oct 2010

This Cross Country event took place in Cloyne in East Cork on Sunday, the 30th of October. Considering the amount of rain overnight and earlier in the morning, I presume that conditions underfoot were soft.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'HSE' 4 mile Road Race - Sun 31st Oct (11:00am)

After a busy summer of road races, local events seem a bit thin on the ground at the moment by comparison. With the days getting shorter and colder, next Sunday see's the last road race of the Autumn with the Cork BHAA 'HSE' 4 mile rod race. The registration is at the Lee Rowing Club clubhouse which is located just next to the Pairc Ui Chaoimh GAA stadium....€5 for registered runners and €7 for non-registered. There are plenty of parking spaces available here at the stadium, outside the rowing club and down along the cul-de-sac by the waterfront (Just where the 4 is marked on the map).

They got 305 at this last year so I would expect something similar again this year. The race starts at 11am so it is worth getting there a bit early to avoid the backlog at the sign-on. The current weather forecast for Sunday morning is poor with heavy showers.

Course...They hold a number of 5km and 4m races in this area using different routes. The route shown above is the usual one for the HSE race. You can get a better look at the course at this LINK

So, on to the description. The course is almost dead flat and there are no climbs. The race basically starts on the Marina near the clubhouse, takes in 2 laps of the Centre Park Road and Monaghan Road, and then finishes near the Marina again. You can expect your times to be pretty fast on this course. They only thing that you have to be careful about is the road surface. There are a lot of heavy goods vehicles using these roads and the road surface can be uneven in spots. It is not a big issue but just keep it in mind if you are running close behind someone and your view forward is obstructed.
Overall, this is a nice fast course. The roads are quiet at this time on a Sunday morning and it is one of the few places where you can hold a road race in Cork City without traffic being an issue. There are refreshments available after the race in the clubhouse.

Results & Photos of the 2010 Dublin City Marathon

Conditions for the 2010 Dublin City Marathon were perfect with cool temperatures, blue skies and constant sunshine. There was a record entry for this year's event and there were plenty of faces from Cork in the race and out along the course. As an occasion, the Dublin City Marathon is truely the National Marathon with runners from all corners of Ireland taking part. It has a unique atmosphere that isn't found in any other Irish Marathon.

This year, I ran the Marathon from the unique perspective as one of the 3:45 pacers. One suprising aspect was the sheer number of runners on the road. I thought perhaps in the later stages, the road out ahead might clear a bit but it never did. The road was constantly full and at times, it got pretty congested when the route got narrow.

Results.....if you haven't seen them, you can check your times on the Dublin City Marathon website.

New Marathon in Waterford???

There seems to be plans for a brand new Marathon in Waterford City in November 2011. The route has not been finalized but may take in the new bridge.

It raises a lot of questions.....Will it be a stand alone event? Will it incorporate the Waterford Half-Marahton? Will that stay a seperate event? Will there be a relay?

Coming a few weeks after Dublin, I'd guess that it may attract a few hunded entrants. When you spread that kind of field out over 26.2 miles then huge gaps appear. Having another type of event running in conjunction with it would make a lot a lot of sense, especially when you consider the amount of effort that will go into organising a race over such a long distance.

Whatever format they decide on, this new Marathon in the Deise is sure to attract a lot of attention next year.

Now....where do I sign up?

26.2 reasons to love the Dublin Marathon....

There was an article in Saturday's Irish Times about the Dublin City Marathon on Monday which basically outlines 26 reasons why the Dublin City Marathon is so special.

13,000 runners........The National Marathon.......128,000 bottles of water.....and the list goes on.

The full article can be seen HERE

By the way, the photo above shows the start of the 2009 Dublin City Marathon.

Entry conditions for the 2011 Ballycotton '10'...

Just in!! .......The entry conditions for the 2011 Ballycotton 10 Mile road race.

First things first...a quick explanation of the Ballycotton '10' for any new runners.

Ballycotton '10'....What is it?........After the Cork City Marathon, this is the biggest running event in the Cork region. It is a 10 mile road race in Ballycotton, East Cork and the numbers are limited to about 3,000 entries. The race is usually on at the start of March and entries usually close in early December.

Now the race info & entry conditions.......!!

The Ballycotton '10' Mile road race will take place on Sunday, the 6th of March 2011.

The entry conditions are much the same as the last 2 years. The only real change is that the forms will be coming out on a Tuesday instead of Monday.

The details........You have a choice of ways to get an entry form...
1) You can send off a SAE with adequate postage to Ballycotton Running Promotions, Ballycotton, Co.Cork. They will then post the entry form back to you on Monday, the 29th of November and all going well, you should get it the next day in Tuesday's post.

2) They will be distributing entry forms to the following shops on Tuesday evening (30th Nov).....John Buckley Sports (Cork), Ger Wyley Sports (Dungarvan) and local shops in Shanagarry & Ballycotton in the afternoon.

3) The entry form will be available for download from the Ballycotton website on Tuesday evening (30th Nov).

Getting the entry form is the easy part. Now for the hard part....getting your entry in!

They will accept the first 2,500 entries regardless of whether they are club runners or not. In reality, this limit is reached in a matter of days.

After that limit has been reached, they will only accept the following entries until Thursday, the 16th of December....
a) Members of AAI registered athletic clubs.......for example....Eagle AC, St.Finbarr's AC, Leevale AC, etc. It does not include BHAA teams, clubs from other sports or informal running groups.
b) Anyone who ran in all 4 of the Ballycotton 5 Mile Summer Series races in 2010. These were Ballyandreen, Shanagarry, Churchtown South & Ballycotton.

After the 16th of December, they will only accept genuine overseas entries. The closing date for these is Monday, the 10th of January 2011.

After that, they will only accept elite athletes.

By the way, there is no special category for anyone returning their 2010 timing chip if they didn't run. Those chips were disposable and they don't want them back.

So what does all that mean.........
If you are a club runner, then you have a 2 week window for your entry. You just need to get it off in time so there should be no real problem. If however you are not a club runner and you didn't do the 4 races in the Summer series then you need to get your act together. You have to get that entry form on the Tuesday and you have to post it asap. You will probably have a window of about 72 hours to fill out the form, post it and hope it arrives on time. If you follow the instructions above and don't hang about then you should get in ok.

Entry conditions can also be seen HERE

Weather forecast for the Dublin City Marathon - Mon 25th Oct 2010

With hundreds of Cork runners getting ready to make the annual pilgrimage to Dublin for the National Marathon, it's time to have a look at the weather forecast.

This is the predicted weather chart for next Monday, the 25th of October. Some weather fronts will pass over early on the weekend and the next low pressure system is expected to arrive late on Monday / early on Tuesday.
For Monday morning however, there will be a ridge of high pressure over the country with the low pressure systems to the east and west of us. That suggests the following weather.........no rain...skies may be clear....winds will be light. In fact, it seems as if the weather may well be similar to the last 2 years. If it turns out as expected, it will be perfect conditions for anyone hoping to run a good Marathon........no winds to worry about and cool enough so that you don't sweat too much.

Just one thing to watch though. If the skies are clear on Sunday night / Monday morning then it's likely to feel pretty cold before the start at 9am, certainly well down into single figures.

Met Eireann are predicting the following....."Sunday night will be dry with clear spells. It will be very cold with widespread and severe frost. It will be mainly dry on Monday but becoming cloudy as rain will push into the west by evening and cross the country overnight and into Tuesday."

It might be an idea to bring an old t-shirt to wear over your singlet or failing that, bring a bin liner. Put 3 holes in it....head and both arms...and you have a disposable jacket ;o)

Dispose of it once you warm up.

Update...Sun 24th Oct....With 24 hours to go, the forecast hasn't changed much. The rain may arrive earlier on Monday but it will probably be late evening by the time it hits Dublin.

Preview of the Bandon 10 km road race - Sun 24th Oct 2010

Next weekend is one of the highlights in the running calendar with the Dublin City Marathon taking place on Bank Holiday Monday. No doubt a large contingent of runners from Cork will be travelling up to take part or spectate.

For those of you not travelling, there is a new 10 km road race in Bandon. It is being organised by a local Gaelscoil with the help of Bandon Athletic Club.

Getting there......The sign on for the race is at the local GAA hall. If you are coming from Cork, take a left at the first roundabout as you enter the town. You are now on the relief road. Stay on this for about a mile as you climb up the hill and then down the other side. It ends in a T-junction. Turn right and the GAA pitches with parking are just down the road on the left. See the map below....
Note that the Old Still Bar is also shown as the finish is near there.

The entry fee for the race is €10 and the course has been accurately measured by a Jones Counter and certified as such.

The start for the race is inside in the town itself. I'm not sure exactly where but I'm sure if you follow the other runners from the GAA hall, you'll find it ok. The race starts at 2pm.

Here is a description of the course from one of the race organisers...
This 10km race starts in Bandon town centre beside the arch in the back quay (near Sabrina’s wine bar) and heads out the Clonakilty road (you are now on the Bandon AC 5 mile course). You then turn left onto the Kilbrittain road past the GAA pitch, where registration takes place.

After the first half mile you come to the first of two hills in this race, the incline starts and develops into a minor hill, this lasts for half a mile, then you take the second left, and then it is pretty flat for the next few hundred meters, you then go straight through the 4 cross roads, and its downhill then until you take a sharp right at the bridge. You now head towards Ballinadee (this is just after the 2 mile mark)- and this now marks the start of the toughest part of the race, not because the hill is so steep but due to the length of it- it lasts for nearly a mile.
Now at once you get to the top of this hill, the toughest part of the course is behind you and it is more or less down hill from here on in. There will be a water stop here on the day to reward your efforts. The road veers left and you are now nearly at the 3mile mark (just a safety note: on this part of the course the road is in fairly bad condition for a couple of hundred metres so watch your footing).
You then continue on a slight downhill and then take the next left until you come to a four cross roads. It’s a left again here passed lots of palm trees, and now you are heading back in the direction of town. From here on in it is downhill and plain sailing until the finish line. You pass the 4 mile mark next to some big steel gates. You continue onwards for nearly a mile and you break out onto the Bandon AC 5 mile course again passed the 5 mile marker where the road flattens out although there is still a fall all the way to the finish at the stop sign next to the Old Still pub.
So to sum up, I’d stick my neck out and say that this is a fast course- maybe not a PB (personal best) course. But you have the reassurance that once you have passed the 3mile mark is reached it is downhill all the way to the finish. Best of luck to all of you and hope to see you at the start line.
(Just keep an eye out for the walkers who are starting their walk on the same course at 1pm)
There is a little present for you when you finish as well as the usual fruit and water (although we can’t guarantee one for each finisher, so the faster you get around the better…)
Then you can cool down on your way back to the GAA pavilion for a shower, cup of tea, sandwich etc and await the presentation of prizes.

The organizers also state that...."Pre and Post event massage will be available on the day by qualified members of iapt (physical therapists)- free to anyone who is interested."

There is a map of the course up on the MapMyRun website.

Boston Marathon sells out in a day...

I got an e-mail today from someone who was hoping to run a qualifying time in Dublin next Monday for the 2011 Boston Marathon. The entries for Boston opened on Monday the 18th of October and were sold out by 5pm the same day!!

The Boston Marathon is one of big 5 world Marathons and attracts around 27,000 entries. To compete in it, you need to have run a Marathon already in a qualifying time for your age group. It is the oldest Marathon in the States having started way back in 1897 with 15 entries.

With the popularity of Marathon running in the United States, the window for entries has been getting smaller each year going from roughly 3 months two years ago.....to a few weeks last year.....to a day this year!.......and that's for a Marathon that is on next April!!

It's a bit like getting into the Ballycotton '10' ;o)

News & Updates....

Just a few snippets of news....

1) I have made a few changes to the sidebar on the right hand side of the website. I have included a section so that you can see what the recent comments are which should make checking for updates a bit easier.

I have also included a direct link to the Road Race calendar for Munster.....there are races outside of Cork you know! ;o)

2) Cross Country.....there are plenty of photos up now for the Munster AAI event near Macroom last Sunday. I also put up a video from John O'Driscoll for the race in Carrignavar last Sunday week. It shows the early stages of the mens race and the finish of the ladies races. Scroll down the page to see it.

3) The Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series will be starting off in January with the Mallow 10 mile road race. This is an excellent series and is great training for anyone thinking about doing the Cork City Marathon next summer.

4) ....and speaking about the Cork City Marathon, there are some proposed changes for next year which should be of interest to a lot of people. It's not that the course is changing or anything like that but if it goes ahead, it will be a major change. Details are likely to be announced in November.

5) Ballycotton '10'....2011!! The date for the 2011 Ballycotton is Sunday, the 6th of March. Details about entries will be made public in the next week or so. If it follows the pattern of recent years then the entry forms will be coming out at the start of December.......however, the key sentence here is....'if it follows'!!
Update....details coming on Friday 22nd Oct

As soon as there is more info, I'll put it up here.

The Runner - Edison Pena

So who is Edison Pena?

He was one of the 33 miners in Chile who were trapped 700 metres underground for 69 days. In an interview with the BBC, it's pretty obvious he went through a difficult period and running 8 kms per day was one of the ways that helped him deal with it.

Part of the interview states that he has been invited to run in the New York city Marathon in November. Wouldn't that be some change......from running around caverns on his own trapped 700 metres underground to a month later running in one of the world's largest Marathons with approx 37,000 runners with another 2 million people looking on!

If you are interested in the interview, you can read about it on the BBC website.

Another video clip about barefoot running...

Last week, I put up a post about barefoot running. In the meantime, I came across another clip.

This one is about an 8 mile race / fun run in New York city. Also included in it is the author of the 'Born to Run' book which is about the Tarahumara Indians in Mexico who run long distances barefoot........covered in a previous post HERE.

Benefits of Barefoot Running....???

Back in January of this year, I put up a post about barefoot running.

Now a group of researchers in Harvard University have carried out a series of tests to compare running with shoes and comparing it to barefoot running.

Most people who run in shoes strike the ground with their heel first. They found that this resulted in a sudden shock as the foot landed.

When people are running barefoot, they tend to land on the forefoot, the foot rolls forward and there is less impact.

Needless to say, if you are interested in trying some barefoot running, it probably makes sense to try it on a soft surface like grass and to run short distances like 1 to 2 miles to see how it feels.

There is a link to a video on the Guardian website.

Results from Liam O'Brien of East Cork AC

Start of the East Cork 3 km series in Midleton...Tues 12th Oct (7:30pm)

East Cork AC kick off their winter series of 3 km road races on Tuesday evening, the 12th of October at 7:30pm. If you are coming from Cork, take the bypass and at the main roundabout, take the 3rd exit and the road south towards Whitegate. After the Topaz garage, take the 2nd right. Entries are taken at one of the parked cars.

What is it???...........Basically, the race itself is 3 loops of a 1km circuit just to the South of Midleton in East Cork. No prizes, no refreshments or anything like that. It's just a 3k run. Entry fee is about €3. The start time for each race is 7:30pm. There will probably be around 100-120 runners taking part.

Note of Caution....If you are doing this race, remember it is in a residental area. The organisers depend on the goodwill of the local residents so that this race can continue. Please keep this in mind when parking, warming up and so on.

Reflective vest........Part of this race is on the hard shoulder of the Midleton to Whitegate road. The organisers request that you wear a reflective bib or vest for the race.

Please note the primary purpose for this series of races is to provide some winter training for runners in the East Cork area. Due to the location of the race, it can only handle a certain number of runners. 70-80 is a nice number, 100-120 and it's getting congested, especially at the finish line. 150 and above will present a lot of problems. Just something to consider if you are going. This is the only preview of the race series that I'll be putting up here on the site.......i.e. Notify people that the series is on but not to constantly remind them.

If you want more info, you will find the following below from the race series flyer....
