Results of the Cork to Cobh 15 Mile Road Race - Sun 3rd Oct 2010

It looks as if roughly 850 runners took part in the 15 Mile Cork to Cobh race this year, up slightly on last years figure of 802. That's a good turnout when you consider that there was another major race in Athlone today (....a three quarter Marathon with a €39/€49 entry fee) which would have attracted a lot of the Dublin runners. That said, there was a large contingent of Dublin runners at the Cork to Cobh race as well which is probably not such a surprise when you consider the cheaper entry fee (€10/€20 late) and the new motorway network.

As always, Cork BHAA put on a fine event with plenty of stewards and water. It's no small feat to organize a successful race over such a busy route. The new venue for the afters and prizes in the Community Hall was a big improvement as well as there was a lot more space this year. Now, if only they could get rid of that walk up that hill! ;o)

For the 3rd year in a row, runners were treated to blue skies and sunshine. Sitting outside after the race, it was almost like a Summers day. Over 15 miles, the weather can have a huge impact. It's worth noting that for some today, 15 miles was their longest run ever and as such, it was almost their 'marathon'. Trying this on a wet and windy day is a totally different story.

So did you run the race? What did you think of it? Was it your first time? Click on the comment link at the bottom of this post.

Results......The mens race was won by the in form Alan O'Shea of Bantry AC in a time 1h 16m, a time many would be delighted to complete a Half-Marathon in let alone a 15 mile road race.

The womens race was won by Angela McCann of Clonmel AC in 1h 33m.

Very well organised recession-proof (10 euro!) race. You would know it's organised by runners! Plenty of friendly stewards. Great support. Great road safety. Lots of water (bottles not cups thankfully!) and a beautiful scenic town to finish in....not to mention the free ice-bath by walking into the sea afterwards!!!

A great day and a great race but there was a lot of traffic on the main street of cobh as the later finishers arrived and some runners were dodging cars and a truck along the last 100m the traffic control along the last stretch could have been a bit better.

Apart from walking up that hill at the end, I had to hike from McCurtain Street up the Summerhill North Col to the Montenotte Piste to deposit my gear bag. Would have missed the start if I hadn’t got a lift back down. Should be a pick up point for gear bags near the start of the race. Otherwise, congrats to the BHAA for organising yet another great Cork-to-Cobh.

This was my first competitive run of this distance so did'nt know how i'd fare out.In the end i was content with my 7 min average, achieved mainly by "tagging" on to a steady fellow runner in front for the duration.(Thanks Alan! )
One of my most enjoyable runs ( except for last mile! )and as the sun shone down at the half way point, i thought about how fortunate those of us who can participate in competitions like this are. As for the organisation, i thought it was excellently stewarded and the water station people were angels in disguise!
Well done to all who volunteered and organised this fantastic event.Ps. Anyone have sore joints like me? :) JD

John,
I would like to say a huge thank you to all the stewards who gave up many many hours on a sunday morning to help out at this race. The support along the way was fantastic, and i know that I for one never have enough breath to express my gratitude along the way! Special thanks to the cyclists down near fota (from cork tri club i think??) who gave great encouragement too!

As a native of Cobh always wanted to do this one and thanks to some encouragement to get off the couch and train for one leg of the Cork City marathon I continued training to be able to do it this year. Glad to say it lived up to expectations, very well organised, great atmosphere and we were so pleased with the weather. Thanks to organisers, stewards and spectators. Full Cork City marathon in 2011? why not.

Well done to the BHAA on a brillant event - excellent stewards, lovely small bottles (not 500ml ones !) and a nice scenic route. They even managed to organise the beautiful weather as well !

brill buzz! This was the longest I had ever run and thanks to your advice John I paced myself, trotted along at a comfortable pace and enjoyed the whole experience far more than I would have dreamed possible! The stewards and support along the way were great - thanks to all. Never thought I had a marathon in me .... now I wonder if there might be one?!

A great day, the two kids collecting the empty water bottles, fair play to you ! The supporters were great, the only thing was the traffic near cobh, It was hard to watch the traffic and the road at the same time-hence I literally hit the ground flying. Over all a great experience.

Just 1 little thing. Would it be possible to show the women results in red so we would know our place in the ladies section?
