SAFETY: The use of reflective running gear...


Now that the clocks have changed, it should go without saying that you should wear some sort of reflective gear when running at night. As you can see from the graphic above, even the colour of your clothing can make a big difference.

You'll notice that a lot of runners wear bright Yellow jackets when out running during the winter as they are the most visible.

The chart below is another example of roughly when runners become visible to drivers at night...





The chart below from the Queensland Government in Australia shows the time it take for a car to stop at various speeds.

For traffic in dark areas in towns and cities, Yellow clothing is just about at the safety limit. On country roads, reflective gear is vital.

Even when running on footpaths in a city under street lights, reflective vests can highlight runners are there especially when approaching traffic junctions.

Several examples of reflective vests are shown below and the prices are usually very modest. Consider getting some arm bands as well.
