The 2026 Dublin Marathon is coming up on Sunday the 25th of October 2026. If anyone would like to optimise their training then I am running individualised training programmes at the moment and the cost is €144.
The length of programme really depends on where you are as a runner and what your initial endurance fitness is like.
After an initial consultation and we agree on what days you can train, a programme is sent out every week by email and weekly feedback is required. That will determine what the programme is like for the following week.

In recent years, approximately 70% of entries to the Dublin Marathon were claimed by runners who had completed it in previous years. In a big change this year, they changed the ballot to give first timers a better chance of entering.
The results of the 2026 ballot were released this week. The key points are...
1) There were 47,000+ applications which far exceeds the available 22,500 places available.
2) 17,200 places were given out in the ballot which obviously means a lot of disappointed people.
3) The remaining 5000 or so entries will be allocated through charity, Good for Age, elites, sponsors, partners and community programmes.
4) Refund and transfer windows will release more places in 2026. The refund window will be open from Wednesday, July 1st, to Sunday, July 12th, 2026. The transfer window for the Irish Life Dublin Marathon will open on Wednesday, July 22nd, and close on Sunday, August 30th.
The 2026 Irish Life Dublin Marathon will take place on Sunday, the 25th of October and there are a number of ways to enter.
1) Ballot System - The ballot system is open from Wed 12th to Mon 17th Nov 2025. Ballot entry LINK
A €5 administration fee will apply to ballot entries to cover processing and verification costs. This fee will be redeemable against the full €110 entry fee if you are successful, or non-refundable if you are unsuccessful. Only one ballot entry is permitted per person.
More places will be made available for first-time runners, as approximately 70% of entries in recent years have been claimed by previous participants. Additionally, efforts will focus on increasing female representation, as women currently comprise only 36% of the field.
Runners who have participated in the Dublin Marathon before will still be well represented, as those entering the ballot can indicate if they have previously participated in the Dublin Marathon since 2016.
Ballot results will be communicated to applicants on Tuesday, 25th November, and Wednesday, 26th November, with notifications released in batches over both days.
If runners are unsuccessful in the ballot, they will have additional chances to gain entry through charity places and via the transfer window and refund system.
The refund window will be open from Wednesday, July 1st, to Sunday, July 12th, 2026. The transfer window for the Irish Life Dublin Marathon will open on Wednesday, July 22nd, and close on Sunday, August 30th.
2) Good for Age - Entries will also be reserved for Elite athletes & Good for Age qualifiers.

It's been a remarkable year for Cork runner Vivian Foley who claimed his 4th national M55 title of the year at the Dublin City Marathon last weekend.
Back in June of 2025, Viv was the first M55 home in the National 5-mile championships in the Phoenix Park with a time of 27m 37s.
In July, he the first M55 again in the national 10-mile championships in the Phoenix Park again with a time of 58m 59s.
The national half-marathon was held in Tullamore at the end of August and Viv took the M55 title again with a time of 1h 15m 25s.
The Dublin City Marathon also doubles up as the national marathon and Viv posted an impressive time of 2h 39m 12s for his 4th national M55 title of the year.
And if all that wasn't enough, Viv also finished 2nd M55 in this years Boston Marathon with a time of 2:43:58!

What a fantastic result for 19-year old Ava Crean from Limerick! Ava won the Charleville Half-Marathon in September with a time of 1:15:22 and is now the first Irish woman home in the 2025 Dublin City Marathon with a time of 2h 34m 12s.
Ava has been on a remarkable journey over the last few years. She only started running in 2020 during the pandemic to get fit and as she noted in a recent interview... " I remember when I started running, I couldn’t even run a hundred meters without stopping or taking a break".
After starting a University course in Manchester in September of 2024, she signed up for the local marathon with an estimated finish time of 3h 30m. The Manchester Marathon duly arrived in April of 2025 and she ran 2h 49m!
Just one week later, she returned to Limerick to run in the home marathon and she improved on her Manchester result with a new PB of 2h 43m 38s.
After this result, she said in an interview... “After getting 2:49 in Manchester, I said to myself ‘I will do limerick for fun’ and I told everyone that I will do it easy, but inside I knew I would get competitive – but only competitive to beat my old time, I didn’t know at all I would win. It was a bit hard, but I wasn’t in pain or anything, my legs were just very tight when I ran Limerick.”
Fast forward to Dublin and she has now dropped her PB to 2:34 and wins the Irish national title in the process.

The Dublin Marathon is the largest marathon in the country with the 2024 event getting almost 18,000 finishers. The demand for places is huge and it sells out about a year in advance.
The organisers have just announced a major change in the entry system for the 2026 event.
In the past, there was a 48-hour window for previous participants to enter the race which gave them an advantage over potential first timers. This had the result that approximately 70% of entries in recent years have been claimed by previous participants.
That will be changed for the 2026 event and the 48 hour window for past participants will be scrapped. It will be replaced with a ballot which stays open for six days and more first timers will be allowed through.
Is it fair???... No matter what the organisers of the Dublin Marathon do, some people are going to be disappointed.
Previous participants who want to do the event again will now find it harder to get through. Some might feel that they should get preferential treatment on the basis that they supported the event over the years.
Some members of athletic clubs might feel they should be entitled to do it because it doubles up as the national marathon but unless they can get through under the 'Good for Age' category then many will be disappointed.
It will get easier for first timers to enter but even then, many won't get through.
Many will complain about the high entry fee but the reality is that the organisers could easily put the prices way up and let market forces control the demand.

Applications for entry to the 2026 Irish Life Dublin Marathon via the ballot system will open for six days at 7 am on Wednesday, 12th November, and close at midnight on Monday, 17th November, at www.irishlifedublinmarathon.ie. Ballot results will be communicated to applicants on Tuesday, 25th November, and Wednesday, 26th November, with notifications released in batches over both days.

The Dublin marathon is always a special event as no other marathon in Ireland comes close to it in terms of size and atmosphere. In 2024, there were 17,747 finishers which was up 7.5% on the 16,510 in 2023.
I'll update the post with links to photos over the next day or two but in the meantime, here is the link to the results.
From a Cork point of view, there were some impressive results. Ryan Creech of Leevale AC was the second Irish athlete home to take a silver medal in the Irish national marathon championship.
Niamh Moore of Leevale AC ran a great race to finish in an impressive time of 2:45:20 and it was also here first marathon! Back in 2016, the qualifying standard for the Olympics in Rio was 2:45 for women.

An impressive 2:45 finish for Niamh Moore of Leevale AC
One of the most famous participants in the marathon was actor Colin Farrell who ran a time of 4h 06m.
He ran the final few kms of the Dublin Marathon with friend Emma Fogarty, who is Ireland's longest surviving person living with Epidermolysis Bullosa (Butterfly Skin). In total, he raised over €700,000 for Debra.

As always, there was a huge turnout for this years Dublin City Marathon with 16,320 runners crossing the finish line.
The star performance from a Cork point of view was that of Ryan Creech of Leevale AC who finished second in the national marathon championship with a time of 2h 14m 08s.

SEAMUS CAWLEY MAINTAINS HIS DUBLIN MARATHON STREAK

He may have been omitted from the pre-race coverage given to the small band of runners – now numbering less than 10 – who have completed all Dublin City Marathons, but once again the name of Seamus Cawley appears on the results for the 41st time.
A total of 1,420 runners finished the first Dublin City Marathon on October 27, 1980, but now the number who have taken part every year is in single figures. And the only Munster representative is the man from Rathkeale in County Limerick.
Speaking the week before this year’s event, the West Limerick AC clubman said he would be happy “to get around in four hours,” and so it transpired as he crossed the line in a gun time of 4:12:31 (chip time 4:11:27).
“I was happy enough, the legs felt ok but I felt a bit tired in the upper body. I got to halfway just on two hours but I managed to keep running all the way, I didn’t walk at any stage,” said the now 63-year-old.
This was only the second time he finished outside the four hours in Dublin. Back in 2013, when he had to walk some of the way with his leg strapped because of a tear in his knee, he recorded four hours and 22 minutes.
Back on that Bank Holiday Monday of 1980, Seamus was just 21 years of age when he dipped under the magical three-hour barrier with a time of 2:59:34. “I had run the Limerick Novice Cross-Country on the Sunday and the day before that had been best man at a wedding,” he recalled of his maiden voyage over the 26.2-mile distance.
He would go on to run 2:35:56 in 1984, knocking another half-minute off of that time 12 months later, and was comfortably inside three hours in the first 17 of his Dublin marathons. He also features in the old Cork City Marathon results, finishing eight in 2:35:46 in the last of that series which concluded in 1986.
Seamus also has the honour of being a scoring member of the West Limerick team (along with John Scanlon and Tom Brouder) who took the gold medals at the BLE National Marathon of 1985 in Limerick. He was also on the team that finished second two years later in Galway. “I have a gold and silver national medal which are great to have as they are the main ones,” he says.
An avid football fan, Seamus attends all of Ireland’s home games along with supporting his local Treaty United FC at the Markets Field in the League of Ireland.
He is also a long-suffering Leeds United fan - “since they won the FA Cup back in 1972 with Johnny Giles” – and no doubt that shock victory over Liverpool on the eve of the marathon put an extra pep in the step of this remarkable man from Rathkeale as he made his way around the streets of Dublin for the 41st edition of the famous marathon.
As always, there was a huge turnout for the Dublin City on Sunday the 30th of October with just over 15,000 crossing the finishing line.
One of the stand out performances was that of Courtney McGuire (#109) who was the first Irish woman home in an impressive time of 2h 32m 52s.
That time puts Courtney in 8th place on the Irish all time list and just one second behind Cork runner Lizzie Lee in 7th place with 2:32:51.

The organisers of the Dublin City Marathon (30th Oct 2022) have announced that an online lottery system for entries will open on Thursday the 6th of January 2022 for 1-week.
A few weeks back, the 2020 Dublin City Marathon was cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. They have now announced that there will be a virtual marathon instead on the October Bank Holiday weekend.

Olympic Marathon runner Lizzie Lee said: “While nothing can beat the atmosphere and support on the streets of Dublin of the friendly marathon, the KBC Virtual Dublin Marathon will be a close second. I am delighted for runners that they can stay motivated by having a goal to aim towards.”
Finishers of the KBC Virtual Dublin Marathon and Race Series will receive the official commemorative medal, with the much sought-after beanie hat the bonus for all those who complete the marathon distance.
Marathon organisers have also worked to develop an app to support runners completing the marathon distance. The app has a built-in GPS tracking feature which automatically records your distance and time with results uploaded automatically when runners have completed their race.
Existing runners in the database for the KBC Dublin Marathon and Race Series will receive an email today (Monday the 13th of July) with an opportunity to sign-up. While entries for the public will be open on Wednesday 15th of July at noon on kbcdublinmarathon.ie. Entry closes on Friday 24th of July.)
FAQ... What day can I run the virtual races? Entrants can run the events on the October bank holiday weekend, Saturday 24th, Sunday 25th and Monday 26th October.
I have entered the 2020 KBC Dublin Marathon/Race Series why do I have to pay for the virtual run? ...An entry fee is charged for the virtual races as all entries for the 2020 KBC Dublin Marathon, and the Race Series are valid for the 2021 races.
What is the entry fee? ...The KBC Virtual Dublin Marathon entry fee is €15 plus postage for beanie plus medal. The KBC Virtual Race Series: Half Marathon, 10km and 4 Mile entry fee is €12 plus postage for the medal.
Entries: ...Existing runners in the database for the KBC Dublin Marathon and Race Series will receive an email Monday 13th July with an opportunity to sign-up. While entries for the public will be open on Wednesday 15th July at noon on kbcdublinmarathon.ie. Entry closes on midnight Friday 24th July.
How is my distance tracked? ...You need to download the KBC Virtual Dublin Marathon app, which has a built-in GPS tracking feature that will automatically record your distance, pace and time. You must run with your phone to have your results uploaded automatically to the results. How does the App work? ...Entrants can run the events over the following days, Saturday 24th, Sunday 25th and Monday 26th October. Runners must download the Dublin Marathon app to your Android or iPhone device to record the time and distance.

A huge number of runners from all over Ireland descended on Dublin over the weekend for the annual marathon. Conditions for the event were almost perfect with cool conditions and autumn sunshine.
Dublin may not be the flattest of courses but it is held at a time of year when the conditions can be perfect. That can often result in a faster time than say running on a flat course on a hot day.
