New Junior parkrun in Midleton on the way???

At the moment, there is a group looking at putting on a new Junior parkrun in Midleton in east Cork and this will be the ninth Junior parkrun in the county. As with all Junior parkruns, it's 2kms in length, it's for 4-14 year olds, it's free and it's on every Sunday at 9:30am.

Looking at the stats from a previous post, any Junior parkrun that is co-sited with a 5k parkrun seems to do very well. Considering the population of Midleton, this new event should get something like 60-80 participants per week?

As for a course, I understand that it is likely to be on the Greenway and use the same start/finish area as the 5k parkrun. The 5k heads east for 2.5kms before turning around a cone. The Junior event will be similar except it's 1km out and then back 1km.

Results of the Midleton 5-mile road race - Thurs 7th May 2026

Niamh Allen was the first woman home with a time of 25m 10s

The 2026 edition of the Midleton 5-mile road race was held on Thurs 7th of May on what turned out to be a dry evening.

"Two course records in Midleton last night. Ryan Creech with his 23:44 improved on the previous best of 24:21 set by Michael Harty two years ago. Michael was just seven seconds outside his time when finishing second in 24:28.

Ryan Creech's 23:44 was probably the first sub-24 in the area since Mark Carroll ran 23:50 at Ballycotton back in 1993.

Niamh Allen - who won last year's race outright in 25:31 - knocked 21 seconds off of that when finish third overall in 25:10." ...JW

Midleton 5k parkrun is 1-year old

The Midleton 5k parkrun started on the 2nd of February 2025 and it is now one year old! The numbers are shown in the chart above and it really has been a great success. Let's have a look at some stats.

a) The first event had 636 finishers.

b) There were 51 events in the first year and the average number of finishers per week for the full year was 165.

c) The most obvious aspect of the chart is the large initial surge in numbers. If we take out the first four events, we get an average of almost 147 for the rest.

d) Looking at the chart, it seems to take about 8 weeks for the novelty factor to wear off so if we ignore those first 8-weeks then we get an average of about 140. This could probably be considered to be what the real average is for the event at present.

e) Looking back at my own stats, I put up two posts on the blog about this parkrun starting... one in Dec of 2024 and one in Jan of 2025. The associated posts I put up on the Running in Cork Facebook page got about 43,000 and 89,600 views respectively. It's obvious that there was a lot of interest in this new event in Midleton.

The 'Surge Problem'... This is a problem facing new 5k parkruns starting up near urban areas.

Parkrun tourism is a thing and some people will travel far and wide to take part in inaugural events. Hence, the huge spike of 636 finishers.

Add to that, you have the novelty factor as people try out a new parkrun for the first time to see what it like. In the case of Midleton, it seems to have taken about 8-weeks for this to end and for the numbers to level off at a more natural level.

Problems... The caveat here is that the Midleton example is a sample size of one but it's a useful template for what other new events would experience.

a) Parking... Can a new event cope with the influx of cars for the inaugural event and the first few weeks?

b) Course capacity... Is the course wide enough to cope with all of those people for the first few weeks?

c) Volunteers... While experienced volunteers from nearby parkruns are likely to help out with the start of a new parkrun, the core team of any new parkrun are a group of people learning the ropes while the numbers are at their highest.

The big numbers put a lot of stress on the system... timekeepers trying to count all finishers, the person trying hand out all the finish tokens, the funnel person trying to keep everyone in sequence and all of the barcode scanners trying to record everyone.

Solution???... I have heard that some new parkruns try to keep the inaugural event quiet and not to announce it in advance. A small number of local people know about it and they manage to get the first event completed without any big numbers or drama.

It's only a partial solution however as after the inaugural event, the cat is out of the bag and the novelty factor kicks in.

Looking forward, there's talk of a new 5k parkrun in Carrigaline and they are likely to experience some of the same issues as Midleton.

At least these are 'good problems' to have, it would be worse if the numbers were so poor that there weren't enough volunteers for an event to be viable or carry on.

Results & Photos of the Midleton 5-mile road race - Thurs 1st May 2025

The annual Midleton 5-mile road race was held this year on Thursday 1st May 2025 on a nice dry evening. There were 340 finishers this year which pretty much the same as the 344 in 2024.

It would seem the fact that the BHAA had a 4-mile race nearby in Carrigtwohill the previous evening  had very little impact on the numbers.

The race was also a little unusual in that Niamh Allen was not only the first woman but she also finished ahead of all the men as well.

A look at the first 10 editions of the new 5k parkrun in Midleton...

The new Midleton Greenway 5k parkrun recently held it's 10th edition and the numbers per week are shown above.

The average number for the ten events is 272. If we take out the surge for the inaugural event, then the average number for the remaining nine is 231.

When it first started, I expected the long term average to be around 150 to 200 so it looks for now as if it's trending towards the higher figure. We'll have a better idea after a year of events once all the bad weather days and holiday periods are factored in.

The one thing for certain is that the new parkrun in Midleton has been a huge success and it shows that there was a demand for a running event like this in the town.

What other towns in Co Cork could host a new parkrun?

New 5k parkrun in Midleton on the way!

Good news! A new 5km parkrun will be starting in Midleton in a few weeks time!

This will be the eleventh 5k parkrun in Co Cork and joins the Youghal event as the second one in the East Cork region.

For any new runners reading this, this will be held every Saturday morning at 9:30am and it's free.

The 5k parkrun will start on the new Greenway which is on the north side of the train station in Midleton. Participants will then head east and they will turn near the road junction which is shown in the photo above.

The course is dead flat and is really about as fast a course as you could want. The only slow part is the turn around point.

Considering we're now in the middle of November, it usually takes a few weeks to organise things so we're probably looking at a start date in January of 2025.

It's also worth noting that as the parkrun starts and finishes next to the train station, getting there by train is an option for people living in say Glounthaune or Carrigtwohill.

The organisers are also looking for more volunteers to help out.  If interested, send an email to john DOT kissane AT parkrun DOT com and he will put you in touch with the event director there.

The Midleton 5-mile road race was held on Thursday 2nd of May 2024 on what was a cool but dry evening. This is in marked contrast to last year when there was a monsoon.

There were a total of 347 finishers which is a recovery on last year but still well down on the pre-2020 levels.

Notice : MMRA 7km trail run on Curragh Woods Mtn nr Midleton - Sun 15th April 2018

The next event on the MMRA calendar is a 7km trail race near Midleton in East Cork. This is the ninth race in the Munster Mountain Running Association Winter-Spring League 2018.

From the MMRA...There's a lovely trail race on Sunday 15th April 2018 in Curragh Woods just outside Midleton.  The event is suitable for the whole family as there is also a junior race (10 – 16) and an accompanied run for u10s.  This run is suitable for all levels of ability and we would encourage people to come and try it out.  The junior and kids runs will kick off at 10:30 am and the adult race starts at 11:00 am.

The route uses the network of walking trails that run through the forest, including a scenic riverside section.  The run is approximately 7k in distance and is a good one to try if you have been thinking about giving trail running a go.  The route has a few hills in it (climb of 220m) just to get the heart rate up a bit and there might be a little bit of mud thrown in for good measure also, depending on the weather.

Curragh Woods is located just 4km north of Midleton on the R626 to Lisgoold. The race start and registration location is at the forest entrance (google maps link) and registration is open from 9:45am - 10:45am.

The race entry fee is €5 (plus a €10 annual registration fee if it’s your first race of 2018  -  go to www.imra.ie to register for the year). Note that it is mandatory to bring and carry a jacket that is shower and wind proof for the entire race.

Cork Council Council to put plans for new East Cork Greenway on display soon

In a recent article in the Evening Echo, it was announced that proposed plans for the new Greenway on the former railway line from Youghal to Midleton.

Clare Cronin, project manager for Cork County Council said...“The drawings will go on display in the coming weeks. Anecdotally, we have been getting a lot of support but quite often we don’t hear the positives as part of the consultation process. So we would encourage people in support of the process to make sure their voices are heard. We want this to be a flagship project for east Cork. The greenways have proved very successful and they open up areas along the way that aren’t open now. Villages like Castlemartyr and Mogeely would benefit, the spin-off would be massive for tourism in the area. The Youghal track is owned by Irish Rail and they are agreeable for us to make the application. If we are successful, the intention will be to take a long-term lease or licence from them to develop and manage the greenway. Cork County council are very keen to secure a large-scale greenway project for the county, having seen how successful they have been elsewhere. Initially, a number of options were looked at, including the one to Kinsale but that old railway line is predominantly in private ownership. For that reason, the council has decided to focus on projects where the land is in public ownership.”

The new Greenway in Waterford which opened earlier this year has been a huge success with large numbers of people walking, running and cycling on it. It has also given a welcome boost to existing businesses like hotels and cafes as well as enabling the establishment of some new cycle hire firms.

The one big difference with the new proposed Greenway in East Cork is that the Greater Cork Metropolitan area is on its doorstep with a population of 400,000 people. If the Waterford one is popular, just imagine what the East Cork one will be like.

As you might imagine, the whole process is likely to take some time. Public consultations, planning, getting funding and then eventual construction....it all takes time but at least the ball is rolling.

More progress on the Midleton to Youghal Greenway...

Back in late 2016, I had a post up about how Iarnród Éireann were proposing to abandon the old Midleton to Youghal railway line due to maintenance costs. This raised the possibility of it being turned into a Greenway.

At the East Cork Municipality meeting for councilors last week, formal approval was given for the proposed Midleton to Youghal Greenway plan to go forward for public consultation. This should appear over the next few weeks.

The success of the recent Waterford Greenway has certainly given a boost to a lot of other Greenway projects around the country with many communities are now asking if it can be replicated in their own areas. The Waterford Greenway seems to be very popular and there was a good article recently in the Irish Independent about it HERE.

If you consider that the Waterford Greenway runs between Waterford City (pop 53,000) and Dungarvan (pop 8,000), imagine what the new East Cork Greenway might be like with the Greater Cork Metropolitan area on its doorstep with a population of some 400,000? How many people are likely to use it for walking, cycling or running at the weekend? How many cafés would benefit? Bike hire shops? Hotels and B&B's? Imagine what the economic return would be on a new Greenway that is low maintenance and all for a projected cost of €6 million.

The biggest objections to the Greenway project are likely to come from people who wish to see the return of the old rail link from Midleton to Youghal. When the railway was extended from Glounthaune to Carrigtwohill and Midleton back in 2009, it cost in the region of €130 million for the 10km line. What would it cost now for a 22km rail link from Midleton to Youghal? €200 million? €300 million? Would any government seriously spend that kind of money considering that building relief roads around places like Castlemartyr and Killeagh would probably have a much bigger impact.

After the recent meeting, a local East Cork politician Cllr Mary Linehan Foley said “If we don’t take this Greenway project, there’s nothing going to happen to the railway between Youghal and Midleton. It’s never going to reopen as a railway line.”

And I suspect she is probably correct. If the rail objectors get their way, the old line is just going to sit there unused for another 40 years. Invest €6 million now and the whole East Cork region will get a financial boost for the foreseeable future.

Will we see the East Cork Greenway Half-Marathon sometime in 2023?

Results & Photos of the Midleton 5 mile road race...Thurs 4th May 2017

There was a huge turnout for this years Midleton 5 mile road race with 627 runners taking part. Last year, Midleton AC had their 50th anniversary so it was a special race with a special dry fit top on offer. I expected the numbers to be well down this year but they hardly dropped.

It's not like there is any huge growth in race numbers at the moment. Plenty of races are losing numbers but the Midleton race is still one of the most popular 5 mile road races in Cork.

In the men's race, Sean McGrath of East Cork AC took the victory. The photo below shows the leading group before the two mile mark.

Sean McGrath is #1255 while the 2nd man home Kenneth Kelleher is #493. Notice the runner further back and behind the group. That's Michael Corbett who probably ran at a more even pace and eventually finished third.

Iarnród Éireann propose abandoning old Midleton to Youghal railway line

It was announced recently that Iarnród Éireann have proposed to abandon the old Midleton to Youghal railway line so as to reduce costs. They have said that they currently spend in the region of €3 million per year on inspecting bridges, drains, fences and crossings on unused lines around the country.

If this goes ahead then it raises the possibility that the old line could be converted in a Greenway.

The new Dungarvan to Kilmacthomas walkway in Waterford looks like a great success with loads of people using it for running, walking and cycling.

Is it time for a walkway between Midleton and Youghal?
