Results & Photos of the Midleton 5-mile road race - Thurs 1st May 2025

The annual Midleton 5-mile road race was held this year on Thursday 1st May 2025 on a nice dry evening. There were 340 finishers this year which pretty much the same as the 344 in 2024.

It would seem the fact that the BHAA had a 4-mile race nearby in Carrigtwohill the previous evening  had very little impact on the numbers.

The race was also a little unusual in that Niamh Allen was not only the first woman but she also finished ahead of all the men as well.

Top 3 men & women...

1 Niamh ALLEN Leevale A.C. F FS 5004 25:31
23 Siobhan HOARE Togher A.C. F F45 5360 30:19
24 Tamzin MULDOWNEY East Cork A.C. F FS 5175 30:27

2 Mark WALSH Leevale A.C. M MS 5332 25:53

I for one would really have liked to run this race but with the Carrigtohill race on the night before I didn't, pity as in previous years I did both as I'm from the area. Hope the two races aren't held on consecutive nights next year.

Agree with above. Likewise I did the BHAA race and would have liked to do the two. Hope this will be rectified for 2026

It seems like Midleton AC were in touch with the BHAA about the scheduling, as they seem very upset about it, have mentioned it a lot on their blog.

if part of a running club I thought Midleton 5 miles race would be the race to support. Bhaa races are great but Midleton date has always been the same. It's only courtesy

Yes if I was organising the midleton race I would be upset also as I think midleton hold their race on the first Thursday of every May so the bhaa didn't do midleton any favours with their scheduling.

There was a race on the same night in Fermoy only a few miles north
It wasn't BHAA
Midleton didn't drop any numbers from last year. Can't see what their problem is.

I think the Midleton 5 has the potential to be a hugely well attended race, given the location, good organisation, run by a running club, long history. And I imagine they look at Ballintotis 4 and think 'we could target numbers more like that'.

Obviously Ballintotis also had county champs, but nevertheless, Midleton should be aiming for higher numbers I'd say, and I can see why they felt frustration at the BHAA.

However, I'd also say that perhaps Midleton could promote their race earlier, more aggressively and more widely. If you think about the number of Ballintotis signs you see across east and northeast Cork in early April, they're everywhere.

Unlike Fermoy (which was a first time race), those involved with the BHAA should be well familiar with when club run races are held, especially putting one on in the same area as one that has been run for forty years on the first Thursday of May. The money raised goes back into the club so all for a good cause and it just felt a little bit disrespectful that there was no consideration of this.

Not holding a race on the same night might be considered a 'courtesy', not keeping the whole week free! The BHAA did nothing wrong. As someone mentioned already, the numbers for Midleton didn't drop from last year.

As a regular runner at bhaa races I can't agree with this statement. All of the upset could have been avoided if the bhaa had simply held the race on a Tuesday like they do with the john Buckley 5km.
