Results of the Mallow 10 mile road race...Mon 19th Mar 2012

A record 1088 runners took part in the 2012 Mallow 10 mile road race on Monday, the 19th of March 2012. This is an increase of 45% on the figure for 2011 which is a huge jump. To paraphrase a certain former politician, the running boom just got 'boomier' ;o)

The winner of the mens race was Alan O'Shea from Bantry AC in a time of 52:35. In second place and just 8 seconds behind was Martin Conroy of Ballina AC in 52:43. Looking at the photos of the race near the 6 mile mark, Martin was back in 3rd place then with a considerable gap so he must have really put in a fantastic last 4 miles. In third place, George Waugh of Bandon AC ran 53:03 after finishing second in the Ballinhassig 4 mile just two days earlier.

In the womens race, it was another closely contested affair with just six seconds between the first two. As you can see from the picture above (right), Lorraine Manning of Raheny Shamrocks AC (1166) and Angela McCann of Clonmel AC (616...obscured) were almost neck and neck near the six mile mark. In the end, Lorraine managed to stay ahead winning in a time of 58:55. Angela was 59:01. In third place, Barbara Cleary from Dublin (143 in pic above) ran 59:32.

Anybody know how the lady that ran into the parked car at the start got on?

Didnt hear i saw her at the time and she was shouting to her friend to keep going and that she was ok. I taught it was a tough course, the wind out the main road was tough going. Running on the main road is tough going anyway when you can see straight ahead at all the other runners ahead.Enyoyed it but i felt it was the toughest one on the body so far out of the three so far .

Her name is Joan Ennis from Grange Fermoy AC. She broke her ankle! Its tough for her! These cars were in the way. They should not have been there! But this is part of road running I guess.

The amount of people wearing headphones in a race in which they were not allowed was amazing.I am waiting to see how many were disqualified.???

I agree Mike. Certainly the toughest of three so far for me too. The wind out on the stretch by the racecourse was tough going.
Compliments to Mallow A.C. on a very well organised and stewarded race.
I saw some people ripping the timing chip/wire off their number in the hall??!! Maybe they thought it was some sort of packaging!
Nice t-shirt too. Thanks to all involved.

It was my first 10 mile race so thank god ye said ye found it tough because I've been doing 10 miles last few weeks but found this hard, the whole set up was very well organised I thought as I was there on my own. Looking forward to trying a half next and thinking of the bay run

Tough going with the wind out by the racecourse but what a great turnout!! Very special atmospheres developing along with the increased numbers that are road running now. When is the Kilnaboy 10? This will be the first time I've done all 4 classics. Well done Mallow AC!

Any idea when the chip times will be up for Mallow?

The times given are the official times. Your time started as soon as the gun went off and finished when you crossed the line.

In fairness to the 2 Gardai that were at the start (2 Females),they were trying to get cars to move away from the left hand side but the grief they were getting was unreal. They were mostly runners family/friends and almost all of them gave the excuse that they wouldn't be '2 minutes' that they were just waiting for someone. They tried to move them either into the estate there or the one across the road but people just wouldn't move. Poor form and now somebody is suffering because of it. Other than that it was a great day, well organised and supported.

Great day out and all of it for only 15 Euro entry

Lovely friendly atmosphere. Mallow put on a great show and could not have done more to help the runners. Plenty of well informed stewards and a nice cup of tea afterwards. Looking forward to next year already.

the lady who broke her ankle did not run into a parked car unfortunately she was tripped up by a male runner who was trying to avoid the parked car or trying to weave his way to the front the red cross ambulance picked her up

John

There was an abulance at the 5.5 mile mark taking someone away? Is that person ok? i loved the run, but i ran ballinhassig as well on saturday and i, like others found mallow very difficult. thought the waiting around at the start was a bit of a disaster as i got very cold very fast and the actually start itself was a little messy. just my opinion thou and it wont be stoppin me from doing it again. it was a grat day over all. well done to all involved. Shame about that lady breaking her ankle. hope she will be ok

I thought it was poorly supported, coming in last mile needed a lift from the crowd who were invisible- also on the main road from 2 mile to 3mile mark a lady fell over a cone injuring herself. Cones should be roped together as people running outside them and in between them- accident waiting to happen! Water stop also no water left.

Saw the guy at the 5.5 mile mark as the ambulance arrived. Didn't look too serious. Just looked like his back has seized up.
The amount of whinging at this stage on this forum is laughable. Bad support(??!), no water, rope the cones together!! People just love to complain! These races are a big undertaking organised for a small price by volunteers. If people find them so bad...don't go!!

I think roping the cones would be more dangerous as they move and the rope gets slack someone is going to trip over the rope. The risk of tripping over a rope would be greater than tripping over a cone.

I've just been looking at the posts on the boards website about this race. The amount of negative comments is a bit much. For €15 we got a 10mile race, t shirt, good food, pacers, results out before many people got back to the hall. For volunteers to hold a race of this size is to be commended. We run because we enjoy it. My favourite complaint was that the 60 minute pacer was wearing black and hard to make out

Re. comment about Boards.ie:
How anyone can complain about that race is beyond me, we are blessed in Cork/Munster to have so many great races at such reasonable rates. I've run 3 top class 10 milers in 7 weeks for less than the price of 1 'fancy' half marathon. Of course there is room for improvement, but constructive criticism not complaint is what is needed. Well done Mallow a/c

I can't believe the comment about waiting around at the start before the race.... The race started around 2 minutes late. Everyone new the start time was 12.30. If you or anyone else decided to be at the start line before that time then you knew you would have to wait until the official start time.

And as for the support - if you wanted support why didn't you bring a bus load of supporters to cheer you on.

Get real people. A small club put on a great road race for 1000+ people all for 15 Euro where you got a nice T shirt, a cup of tea and a sambo.

Well done Mallow AC and people please appreciate the work that goes into organising this event.
