Sometimes I come across some news items of interest but I don't have the time to put up individual posts about them. I'll collect these here every month under the new News Bites post.
Here are a selection of short news items that I came across during the month of October 2023.
31st Nov 2023 - Dungarvan 10-mile entries to open at the start of December... West Waterford AC have announced that entries to their popular John Treacy Dungarvan 10-mile road race opens for AI club members on the 1st of Dec and for everyone else on the 8th of Dec. See this post.
31st Nov 2023 - Glen River parkrun in doubt for next weekend... With a deluge on the way from Storm Ciarán on Thursday, it's not looking good for the return of the Glen River 5k parkrun in Cork City on Sat 4th Nov.
31st Nov 2023 - Beat the Train for Down Syndrome 10-mile Sells Out... This popular 10-miler on the Greenway at Kilmeaden on Sat 18th Nov 2023 in Co Waterford has now sold out. 30th Oct 2023 - Paul Brunnock Memorial Run on Waterford Greenway sells out... West Waterford AC have announced that the Paul Brunnock Memorial Run on the 4th of Nov has sold out. There are a number of distances on offer from 5k to 50k.
25th Oct 2023 - Glen River parkrun cancelled again... The recent floods did a lot of damage to the paths in Glen River Park on the northside of Cork City. Even though the council are working on, the Glen River parkrun crew have announced that the event scheduled for Sat 28th Oct has been cancelled.
25th Oct 2023 - 2024 Killarney Half & 10k... The organisers of the Run Killarney Half-Marathon & 10k have announced that their 2024 race will be held on Saturday 8th June. This is a change from the 2023 race which was held in early May. Previous editions were held in late July.
17th Oct 2023 - Vernon Mount Bridge to open 1st Nov... After a false dawn, it now seems as if the new Vernon Mount bridge linking the Tramore Valley Park to Frankfield will open on Friday the 1st of November.
17th Oct 2023 - New Half-Marathon in Skibbereen in 2024... There are plans for a brand new half-marathon and 10k event in Skibbereen on Sunday 14th July 2024.
13th Oct 2023 - Green light for the Kerry Way Ultra in 2024... The organisers of the Kerry Way Ultra have announced that they have secured insurance for their event in September of 2024. As well as the 200km Ultra, they have shorter versions as well.
13th Oct 2023 - Ballincollig Junior parkrun cancelled... There will be no 2km junior parkrun in Ballincollig Regional Park on Sunday 15th October 2023.
10th Oct 2023 - The race for a sub two-hour official marathon... The BBC website has an article about the new high tech shoes and the race for the first sub 2-hour time... https://www.bbc.com/sport/athletics/67062551
6th Oct 2023 - Kinsale Regatta 5-mile donate over €4000 to local RNLI... A few days ago, the organisers of the Kinsale Regatta 5-mile donated a cheque for €4,380.91 to the local Kinsale branch of the RNLI.
6th Oct 2023 - Cork Fireman Alex O'Shea completes the 2023 Spartahlon Ultra... Cork runner Alex O'Shea was the only Irish finisher in the recent 244.7km Spartahlon Ultra in Greece. 6th Oct 2023 - F65 Half-Marathon World Record... Rosa Mofa of Portugal won the Gold medal in the marathon back in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. At the recent World Running Championships, she set a new F65 world record for the half-marathon when she ran a time of 1h 26m 06s.
5th Oct 2023 - RTE Radio interview about racing shoes... Brian O'Connell of RTE interviews Mark Hanrahan of John Buckley Sports about the evolution of racing shoes and how they impact the performance on the road and track. The interview is supposed to be broadcast on Fri 6th Oct 2023.
5th Oct 2023 - New 5k parkrun on Fenit Greenway... It looks as if a new 5k parkrun is on the way in Co Kerry! At the moment, a team is being assembled for a new 5k parkrun on the Fenit Greenway which is to the west of Tralee. The provisional start date is Sat 4th Nov 2023. The four existing parkruns are in Killarney, Tralee, Listowel and on Inch Beach.
4th Oct 2023 - Waterford Half-Marathon... Entries have now opened for the Waterford Half-Marathon which takes place on Sat 2nd Dec 2023. There is always a lot of interest in this half in Waterford City and is a very popular event at this time of year.
3rd Oct 2023 - Parkrun is 19-years old... It's hard to believe it but the very first 5k parkrun took place in the UK 19-years ago! According to the parkrun organisation, there have been 626,387 parkruns worldwide since the first one in 2004. From memory, the first 5k parkrun in Ireland was in Belfast and then one appeared in Dublin. The first 5k parkrun in Cork was in Macroom back in 2013.
2nd Oct 2023 - Waterford Marathon donate almost €6,000 to charity... The organisers of the Waterford Viking Marathon recently donated €5,490 to the Waterford branch of the Irish Guide Dogs. This was their chosen charity partner for the 2023 marathon.
2nd Oct 2023 - New Junior 2k parkrun planned for Fethard in Co Tipperary... Plans are underway to start a junior parkrun in Fethard, Co Tipperary. Junior parkrun is a free weekly 2 km event on Sunday mornings for children aged 4-14.
