Guest Post: Pressure ...by Pat Walsh

 ** Pressure **

There is an old saying ‘Pressure is for Tyres” And they are right.

Are you now getting ready for long runs or for battle with a Marathon in Ireland or abroad. If so, are you under pressure? Like a tyre that is over-inflated and could just burst, then you too need to look at your own pressure levels.

If you have got this far then you are super, so why put more pressure on yourself.

The elites of the world are not reading this page just the ordinary runners who like to set a goal and then achieve it.  Of the world’s population only a tiny % ever finish a marathon so getting to the finish line is a wonderful achievement.. SUCCESS.

What have you done? finished a marathon, ran 22 miles on a training run, did 40 miles last week. To the average person on the street that is awesome, mad, incredible, stupid, etc, etc, depending on who you talk to.

So before you lace up for the weekend just go easy on yourself. Relax and enjoy the run. The time will be the time but whether you are fast or slow the dog will still love you. The only pressure on you is that which you imposed on yourself.

If, like me, you have decided not to do a marathon due to a combination of domestics and injuries, then accept it and it is fine. No pressure to do something that would only cause undue pressure.

You will only continue to run once you learn how to relax and enjoy.

You will get the medal and the t-shirt with no times printed.

Prepare yourself as well as you can and then be willing to accept the outcome.

You will achieve more if relaxed as the body will function more efficiently.

I’m old, I know and have ran enough to have a bit of common sense now.

‘That's the terror of knowing what this world is about
Watchin' some good friends screamin', "Let me out"
Pray tomorrow gets me higher
Pressure on people, people on streets’ … Under Pressure

Have a lovely weekend and relax
