Rob Heffernan finished 5th today in the 50km walk at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing. To finish 5th in the World is a remarkable achievement considering he wasn't 100% fit following his operations last year.
For a while, Rob was in 3rd place but was passed by two Japanese athletes. Rob's time of 3h 44m 17s works out as 7:13 minute mile pace.
Post race interview with Rob...

Unfortunately Brendan Boyce (Letterkenny) was disqualified and Alex Wright (Leevale) was unable to finish.

I have nothing but the greatest admiration for Rob Heffernan. Well done Rob a great athlete and a gentleman.
How long before he's upgraded to bronze this time?? Oh sorry, the official media line seems to be that we don't mention drugs at the World Championships...everything's fine...nothing to see here.
Congratulations to Rob and also to Running in Cork for keeping us up to date on all current athletic results, the lack of coverage given to these championships and to the recent World Masters by the other online athletic media is nothing short of a disgrace.
