In an interview on the subject of finding a new title sponsor, the race director Jim Aughney said......."We've gone through many (sponsorship) presentations and had lots of people saying how much they'd like to get involved and where they would like to take the event. But when it comes down to it, the bottom line seems to be economics and we still haven't secured sponsorship for next year. We always knew this year would be a problem as we lost the Lottery so late and it was an Olympic year, with so many sports budgets already committed elsewhere."
The 2012 race had 14,350 entries of which roughly 10,000 were from Ireland. On the day, 12,165 finished the 26.2 mile course.

So let me get this straight, over 14 thousand people entered, even if they were all Irish (which they weren't) and if they all entered early (which they didn't) they would have paid 70 euro each. That's over a million quid. This years prize money was 100 grand. I imagine all drinks and gels are sponsored. Even allowing for paying the guards etc does this event even need a major sponsor? 900k is a lot of money disappearing down some hole.
“down some hole”? Are you for real? Do you think the stewards are sponsored? How about the barriers along the route? Or the clean-up crew? I’ll bet the RDS are just dying to provide their exhibition hall for two days free of charge! Medals & tech shirts – I’m sure people are just giving them away. Insurance? Legal fees? Advertising? I could go on. I’ve never been involved in race organisation… but I do live in the real world.
Interesting debate.What are the running costs of the dublin marathon. Amazing they can't get a sponsor. I doubt though that the entry numbers will increase by much more as i doubt the market is there and also congestion is a problem with 14,000 runners. imagine the problems with 20,000 runners!!!
How much are the organisers looking from sponsors?
Dry fit tops can be sourced from China for two or three euro each
Medals can surely only cost a euro or two each
Drinks and gels are sponsored by the providers
Goody bags were sponsored by Spar the last time I did it
The stewards ARE volunteers
And since the race is such a tourist attraction City Council would surely be well disposed to providing both barriers and clean up afterwards for a reasonable price
As well as numerous other things they haven't been mentioned already any public event has to pay for the extra gardai to cover it which costs a fortune. Also road closures also need to be paid for. Claiming they have anywhere near 900,000 knocking around.... not a hope!
