Guest Post: IRISH 10-MILE RANKINGS Q1 2022 ...by John Walshe

IRISH 10-MILE RANKINGS 2022

There is no doubting the popularity of the 10-mile distance, especially during the early months of the year when most of the high-profile events take place.

As was done in 2018 and 2019, this is an attempt to compile an annual ranking list for men under 55:00 and women under 65:00 and will be updated each quarter.

The list, from January to March, shows the time (gun time), name/club/category, the race and finishing position, along with the date. Where an athlete appears more than once, just the surname is used after the initial listing.

Aoife Cooke – with her 54:19 effort at Dungarvan – leads the women from Michelle Finn who ran 55:09 at Mallow. Jake O’Regan went to the top of the leader-board for men with his 48:40 at Bundoran surpassing the 48:51 achieved by Hugh Armstrong the previous month at Dungarvan.

Dungarvan, with 16 under 55:00, saw the highest standard amongst the men with Trim, at 15 under 65:00, the leading race for the women. The most prolific racer is Tudor Moldovan with five performances, including two on successive days.

Any additions or corrections are welcome and can be made on the comments section wherever this list appears and will be included in the next updated edition in three months time.

Footnote (or food for thought!): This list contains the names of 52 runners (51 men + one woman) who, over three months in 13 different races throughout the land, ran under 55 minutes for 10 miles.

Taking a look back all of 29 years, to March 7th 1993, the Ballycotton ‘10’ results show 71 finishers under 55:00. Allowing for 10/11 British competitors, it still meant that 60 Irish men ran sub-55:00 in one race on the one day – long, long before the era of ‘super shoes’!

Next road race in Cork....the Mallow 10 mile on Sun 27th Mar 2011

The Mallow 10 mile road race on Sunday the 27th of March is the next big race in Cork and is likely to attract in excess of 700 runners. Most of the regulars will know that this race was supposed to be on at the start of January but had to be cancelled due to icy conditions at the time. This will be the 3rd race of 4 in the Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series.

Entries....You can enter on the day for €20 at the race HQ at Mallow Youth Centre between 10:00am and 11:30 am. If however, you enter online before 1pm on Friday the 25th, you will only pay €15.

You can enter online HERE. All on-line entrants can pick up their numbers at the Race HQ (Mallow Youth Centre) before 12:00 noon on Sunday.

The race starts at 12:30pm

More info.....In preparation for the race in January, I have already put up all the info required in earlier postings so there isn't much point in putting them up again. Just click on the links below...

Race HQ....How to get there....and more race details in this previous post.

Race Course.....See this previous post which should give you a good idea of what the course is like.

Changes from the January details.....

1) 60 Min pacers.......it looks like the 60 minute pacer picked up an injury so there won't be one on Sunday. If anyone would like to pace 60 minutes on Sunday then they should contact Paudie Birmingham of Mallow AC asap. Needless to say, to pace 60 minutes, your recent 10 mile time should probably be 58 minutes or below!

Updated....Sat 6pm
2) Pacing Balloons.....Balloon colours for tomorrow.

70 minutes will have a red balloon. / 80minutes will have a yellow balloon. / 90 minutes will have a green balloon.

Results of the Mallow 10 Mile Road Race...Sun 7th Feb 2010
Just over 500 runners turned out for this 10 mile road race in North Cork which is pretty impressive considering that it was only 1 week after the Dungarvan 10 and it had to be cancelled from it's original date in early January. Last year, they got 576 runners and if the weather had been kinder in early January, they may well have got somewhere in the region of 700 entries instead.
Despite a bit of a breeze, the conditions for the race were pretty good. A bit dull but it was cool and dry which was the main thing. A lot of the faces present today were also present in Dungarvan last week and judging from some of the times, the short gap of a week between the 10 mile races was enough for most people to recover and post some fine times in Mallow.

Results...
The full results are now available HERE.
(Sorry about the broken link earlier today. Mallow AC changed the name of the results file so the link had broken as a result. It should be ok now)

The category results are available HERE.

By the way, this was the 2nd race in the John Buckley Sports Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series and the results after 2 races should be available soon.

Photos...(Updated Tues 9th)
There were plenty of cameras out along the course and there should be loads of photos available soon.

1) To get the ball rolling, we have 3 short albums from Eddie Keogh of Eagle AC...

2) Another batch here from Paudie Birmingham...

3) Loads of commercial photos of the finish line HERE.
4) Joe Murphy of Eagle AC has a large gallery of 329 photos HERE.
5) Jorge Ruiz Villasante has an excellent gallery HERE.

Mallow 10 mile coming up...
Now that the Dungarvan 10 is out of the way, it's time to look forward to the Mallow 10 mile road race next Sunday, the 7th of February. This was originally supposed to be on the 10th of January but had to be cancelled due to the icy conditions back then.

This will be the 2nd race in the Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics Series. The remaining 2 races are the Ballycotton '10' in March and the Kilnaboy '10' in April.

If you are going to Mallow next Sunday then you should pre-register online...
1) If you registered already for the 10th of Jan race then there is no need to register again.
2) If you pre-register, the entry fee is only €12. You do NOT pay online. All you are doing is giving your details (name, club, age, etc) to Mallow AC so that they can get all the information into the race software beforehand rather than trying to do it on the day in a mad rush. On race day, you will just go to the pre-registered queue, pay your €12 and collect your number. Nice and quick.
3) If you don't pre-register, the entry fee is €15 on the day. So, it makes sense to pre-enter!

To pre-register for the Mallow 10, just go to this webpage and input your details.

A preview of the race coming soon...
