Results & Photos of the Ballintotis 4 mile road race...Thurs 19th Apr 2018
It seemed only appropriate that the warmest day of the year so far in 2018 also coincided with the first major race of the Summer road race season in Cork with a whopping 826 runners taking part. Conditions were almost perfect with some nice sunshine for the whole race, something we haven't seen a lot of of late.
It was also a big race for East Cork AC after two of their members took the respective titles. Michael Harty's time of 19:15 was also a new course record while Fiona Santry won the women's race for the first time.

Final info for the Ballintotis 4 mile coming up Thurs 19th Apr 2018
The Summer season of road races kicks off with the Balllintotis 4 mile road race on Thursday the 19th of April 2018. After a long dark winter, the evening races will make a pleasant change from the weekend events.
The race is at 8pm and is chip timed. You can enter on the night but make sure to get there early because of the crowds.
Preview......You can see a preview of the course HERE
Here is the final info from the organisers.......The big night is now almost upon us again with the ninth running of the Ballintotis '4' Mile Road race taking place on this Thursday April 19th. A lot of work has been done over the past few months in preparation for what we hope will be another occasion to remember.
James McCarthy of the host club East Cork AC has won the event in all the previous 8 years and last year got the better of club mate Sean McGrath after a titanic struggle. The ladies honours 12 months ago went to Irish International Claire McCarthy who has distinguished herself with some super performances in the green singlet since then.
The success of the Ballintotis event which was brought to the picturesque venue by East Cork A.C in 2010, is due to a number of factors. It's fair to say that the generous sponsorship and backing from the local business community has been a key component in it's rise and with this in mind, the local Ballintotis Race Committee wish to acknowledge again the continued backing of a number of their loyal major sponsors.

There will be plenty more trail races like this coming up over the Summer months and they can make a nice change from running on the roads.

Spotted at the road races... John Walshe of Ballycotton
Anyone who knows John Walshe of Ballycotton will know that he is a great supporter of local road races and 10-mile road races in particular. John was running last Sunday at the Killea 10 mile road race last Sunday in North Tipperary and someone snapped this photo as he crossed the finish line...
Borrisoleigh Track Attach had this piece on their Facebook page...."The word legend is often thrown around within sport but the man pictured here is a true legend of Irish running. It was great to see East Cork man John Walshe at the Killea Road Run where he completed the 10 mile race. "Mr Ballycotton" is a person and role model that all who are involved with organising any sport should aspire to emulate. The sport of road running would be in a far darker place if it wasn't for the efforts of John Walshe over the last 4 decades."

Results of the Karen Fenton Memorial 5k race... Sun 15th Apr 2018
A whopping 694 runners turned out for the inaugural Karen Fenton Memorial 5k in Ballinora on Sunday the 15th of April 2018. After putting up the race notice a few weeks back, I could see that the post was getting a lot of hits but little did I suspect that the turnout would be so great.
Race numbers at the moment seem to be highly volatile with the recent Emer Casey 5k in Youghal dropping a massive 28%..the lowest number since 2010, the BHAA Gas Networks race down to its second lowest ever and now this one way up at almost 700 runners. One thing is for sure, you certainly can't take the numbers turning up at a race for granted.

Results of the Cork BHAA Gas Networks 5 mile...Sat 14th Apr 2018
A total of 320 runners turned out for Cork BHAA Gas Networks 5 mile race on Sat 14th Apr 2018 and unusually for a BHAA race, it was held on a Saturday evening. Comparing it to the other Gas Network races over the years, this one is the second lowest turnout ever and just 4 more than the inaugural race back in 2012.
Another unusual feature was the lack of faster women in the race. The first woman was in 98th place overall where as normally it would be around the 20 to 30 mark or at least it used to be. It seems that as times goes by, the number of faster women on the race circuit seems to be dropping off. Not sure why.

Irish results in the 2018 Manchester Marathon...
As well as Rotterdam and Rome, the Manchester Marathon was also held last weekend on Sunday the 8th of April 2018. This particular marathon has got a lot of bad publicity of late after it was found that the 26.2 mile course was actually short for a number of years due to a measuring error.
In the men's race, Mark Ryan from Dublin finished 3rd in a time of 2:25:40. In the women's event, Dolores Duffy of Watergrasshill AC finished 3rd female in the international section.
These are the Irish men under 3:10 and Irish women under 4 hours (Club only as there is no other way of finding them).

Notice : Cobh Junior 2km parkrun starts Sun 27th May 2018
It has just been announced that a new 2km parkrun for 4 to 14 year olds will be starting in the small park next to Carrignafoy College in Cobh on Sunday the 27th of May 2018.
This is a free event and parents can register their children here... https://www.parkrun.ie/register/
The course is roughly 4 laps of a 500m rectangular loop. The park is located high above the town and is shown in the map below...
This is what the park looks like from the road. Parents and guardians can stay somewhere central in the park and watch the children run around the course.
