Running events - Sat 29th Feb & Sun 1st Mar 2020

There are plenty of running events to choose from this weekend in Cork but there is a marked contrast in the weather between Saturday and Sunday.

To start with, there is plenty of heavy rain forecast for Friday the 28th so that may well impact on parkruns on Saturday so check the respective Facebook pages before you travel.

Storm Jorge (pronounced Hor-Hay) which was named this time by the Spanish Met Office will move over the country on Saturday and it will probably be wet, windy and cold for the various parkruns.

Sunday by contrast looks like a much better day and all of the events should go ahead unless there are local issues. Again, watch out for updates before traveling.

Notice: Cork BHAA CIT 5k - Sun 1st March 2020

The CIT 5k is a brand new event on the Cork BHAA calendar and it's coming up on Sunday the 1st of March 2020 at 11am.

The entry fee is just €5 for registered BHAA runners and €10 for non-registered. You enter on the morning of the race.

Update from the organisers... You will receive a 20% discount on items bought in John Buckley Sports shop on production of your CIT 5k running number up until the end of August 2020. Spot prizes will be given to down the field runners but you must be present at the prizegiving to receive the spot prizes.

Registration is in the West Atrium of CIT which is in the main building. There will be stewards on hand directing people so just park up and follow the directions.

Post race refreshments with tea, coffee, sandwiches, biscuits, fruit, etc will be in the West Atrium as well along with the prize giving afterwards.

Spot Prizes... There will be plenty of spot prizes for runners down the field and you don't have to be registered with the BHAA to receive one.

Note that they will be giving out an aluminium sports water bottle for the first 400 to enter on the day.

As for the course, it's the exact same as the popular Rebel Run 5k which takes place every November.

Other than a few corners and bends, it's a pretty fast course and of course, it's nice to finish on the CIT track.

Considering the fact that it's a BHAA event, it's located in the western suburbs of Cork City and ease of access from the N40 South Ring Road, it should get a good turnout.

Notice: Killeagh 4 mile road race - Sun 1st March 2020

This is the 5th year of this 4 mile race and it's organised by Killeagh Community Healthy Clubs Project in association with Youghal AC. It will be held this year on Sunday the 1st of March 2020 at 11am.

Entry on the day is €10.

Considering that Killeagh is on the N25 Cork-Waterford road, the race should have a pretty big catchment area.

As you can see from the course map below, the race takes in a loop to the west of Killeagh. The race finishes at the entrance to the Killeagh GAA grounds which is the race HQ. There will also be changing and shower facilities here.

Notice: CIT Sports Seminar Series - Dec 2019 to Apr 2020

Following the success of last year, there will be another CIT Sports Seminar Series again this year.

Update: 25th Feb 2020... Note the new date. The next talk is on the 25th of March 2020.

NTA announce grants for pathways in Cork

The National Transport Authority (NTA) have just announced a number of grants to move forward some pathway projects around the Cork Harbour area. While a number are titled 'Cycle Corridors', this often means a shared pathway for cyclists, pedestrians and runners.

Some of the more interesting ones are shown below...

New Greenways and pathways tend to move at an almost glacial pace but at least progress is being made.

14-Week Programme for the 2020 Cork City Half-Marathon starts 24th February

The 2020 Cork City Half-Marathon is coming up on Sunday the 31st of May. I'll be running an 14-week training programme for it which will start on the 24th of February. Details below...

Please note that this is tailored for each individual person, it's not some sort of generic one-size fits all plan. The plan adapts according to the progress being made.

For it to be of value...

a) You'll have to answer questions initially so that a suitable programme can drawn up. This will be based on your current training and experience and how much time you have available. It's a plan designed to suit your life and work schedule as opposed to the other way around.

b) You'll also have to provide feedback every two weeks and the plan will be based on this.

c) You really do have to follow the plan. There is no point dipping in and out of it or be off running 5k races every weekend when you're supposed to be doing a long run. The plan can be adapted to accommodate the occasional race but they must be occasional.

The cost for the 14-weeks is €69.... from the dark evenings of Febuary to the long Summer evenings at the end of May.

If interested, email: johndesmondrunning AT gmail DOT com

Cork City Marathon Relay... This 12-week programme will start on the 9th of March. Cost €59.

Results & Photos of the Glen River 5k parkrun - Sat 22nd Feb 2020

There was a marked jump in numbers for this weeks 5k parkrun in the Glen in Cork City with 156 taking part. This was actually the 2nd highest number ever for this event.

This is in marked contrast to the 72 last week when the numbers were low due to Storm Dennis and all of the heavy rain.

The parkruns in Ballincollig and Mallow were cancelled this week due to flooding so that might have also helped the numbers.

Video: Out There - A Journey to the Barkley Marathons

Anyone with an interest in Ultra marathons or trail running should find this of interest...

The Barkley Marathons - one of the world's toughest ultramarathons, has been held annually in the Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee, since 1987.
The race is so brutal that, since the inception of the race, only 15 people have managed to finish. Runners are to run five 20-mile loops, within a 60 hour time limit and with more than 20.000m of elevation change.
The course is unmarked, no electronic devices are allowed and most of the race is off-trail.

Out There - A journey to the Barkley Marathons is the story of Belgian ultrarunner Karel Sabbe, who holds the world records on two of the most epic trails in the world: the 4279km long Pacific Crest Trail and the 3500km long Appalachian Trail.

Disappointed lottery entries for Dublin Marathon will get priority in 2021

The organisers of the Dublin City Marathon sent out this email today and it looks like that those in the lottery who don't get in this year will be given priority for 2021.

If they use the same criteria for entries for 2021 and allow those who have done Dublin in the one of the last three years then it's not going to leave many spots for new people.

Many thanks for your interest in this years KBC Dublin Marathon.

As you may be aware we had over 35,000 applicants for the 25,000 available places.

You have not received a place in Round 1 or 2 of the Lottery process. We will now proceed and issue the refund of your initial €15.

In July, we will offer a refund option to all who have entered. Round 3 offers will then issue on 31st July. We will hold your details for this offering.

Anyone left in the lottery at the end of Round 3 will be offered a priority code to enter the 2021 KBC Dublin Marathon when the entry opens in November.

Regards and thanks for your patience,

KBC Dublin Marathon Team

2020 Tokyo Marathon restricted to just elite runners

The organisers of the 2020 Tokyo Marathon which was due to be held on the 1st of March have announced that due to fears over the Corona virus, the marathon is effectively cancelled. Only elite athletes will be allowed to take part.

The press release stated “We have been preparing for the Tokyo Marathon 2020 while implementing preventive safety measures, however, now that case of COVID-19 [corona virus] has been confirmed within Tokyo, we cannot continue to launch the event within the scale we originally anticipated”

“We regret to inform you the following; the Tokyo Marathon 2020 will be held only for marathon elites, and wheelchair elites.”

Some 38,000 runners were due to take part in this event which is one of the Majors events. Now, just 200 elites will take part.

The organisers have said that there will be NO refunds for 2020! All registered runners can defer their entry to 2021 but they will have to pay the entry fee again.

Needless to say, most visitors will have spent a lot more on flights and accommodation.

It's likely that more major sporting events will be cancelled in 2020 including possibly the Olympics.

NIKE announce details of the new controversial Alphafly shoe

Nike have recently released photos and details of their new Air Zoom Alphafly Next% running shoe and this is what it looks like...

The first thing that jumps out of the picture is the size of that sole! It is 39.5mm thick which is just under the new guidelines of 40 mm or less imposed by the World Athletics body.

The controversial NIKE Vaporfly shoes introduced in 2016 is supposed to make runners up to 4% more efficient. The new Aphlafly has claims of up to 8%!

Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya wore them to break the two-hour marathon barrier in October of 2019 in Austria.

In a press relase, Nike said...“The groundbreaking research that led to the original Vaporfly unlocked an entirely new way of thinking about marathon shoes. Once we understood the plate and foam as a system, we started thinking about ways to make the system even more effective. That’s when we struck upon the idea of adding Nike Air to store and return even more of a runner’s energy and provide even more cushioning.”

The new shoes will be available to elite athletes at first but should be available for the general public to purchase in a few months time.

The expected retail price is about $250 / €250.

Like the Nike Vaporfly, these new shoes will have a limited life span of probably less than 200 miles.

Clonakilty 5k parkrun celebrates its 6th anniversary

The very first 5k parkrun in Clonakilty in West Cork was held on the 1st of February 2014 and it recently celebrated its 6th anniversary.

The chart above shows ALL of the parkruns for the last six years and as you can see, it gets about 25 to 50 participants per week. There have been quite a number of weeks where it wasn't held for whatever reason.

The chart above shows the average number of finishers per week for the six years. There isn't a huge variation but 2019 looks like it was the best year so far.

The Clonakilty 5k parkrun is held at the Show Grounds every Saturday morning at 9:30am and is completely free. You can find out more about it here... https://www.parkrun.ie/clonakilty/

Churchtown South 5 mile race makes a return in 2020

It looks as if the Churchtown South 5 mile road race is back again!

This was traditionally the third race of the Ballycotton Summer Series and was held on the third Thursday of July every year. When the Ballycotton '10' and the Summer Series finished a few years back, the race came to an end.

It is scheduled to be held this year on Thursday the 25th of June 2020.

Notice: Youghal AC 5k - Thurs 2nd April 2020

The first evening race of the Summer season in Cork will be the Youghal AC 5k on Thursday the 2nd of April 2020...

The Emer Casey 5k in Youghal has come to an end and the local club Youghal AC have moved the date of their annual 5k from July to the start of April.

The 5k will start at 8pm and the entry fee is €10.

Normally the first evening race in Cork is in mid-April when the sun sets about 8:32pm. As the Youghal AC 5k is in the town of Youghal, the street lighting will compensate as it gets dark earlier. On the 2nd of April, the sun sets around 8:10pm.

With it's location near the county boundary, the race is sure to attract runners from both East Cork and West Waterford.

The race is on a flat fast course on the streets of the historic town and passes under the iconic Youghal Clock Tower...

This race has an Athletics Ireland permit and has been measured accurately by Jones Counter.
