15 year old Irish sprinters Ciara Neville & Molly Scott take top 2 places at English Athletics Championships

Last weekend, 15 year old Ciara Neville of Emerald AC caused a but of an upset when she took silver in the senior womens 60m race at the Irish Indoor Championships in Athlone.

Today Saturday the 28th of February, she was in action again but this time at the English U17 Age Group Championships. Obviously this was going to be a completely different affair as Ciara was going head to head with some of the best up and coming talent in England.

In the first semi-final of the 60m, Ciara finished first in 7.57 seconds (2nd 7.64 and 3rd 7.73). In the 3rd semi-final, Molly Scott of St.Laurence O'Toole AC in Carlow finished first in 7.61s (2nd 7.66 and 3rd 7.81). This I belive was a new PB as her previous best was 7.79s set on the 10th of January this year.

In the final, Ciara won the race in a time of 7.56 seconds while Molly finished 2nd in 7.58s (3rd athlete was 7.58s as well).

Considering that both are just 15 years old, would have been going up against 16 year olds and some of the best sprinters in England in that race,  then it's a remarkable result.

'Running Police' used in Tokyo Marathon

Following on from the terrorist attack at the 2013 Boston Marathon, security has been a concern for all the world's major marathons.

Last weekend at the Tokyo marathon, the organisers had 60 police officers running along with the participants. They each wore white vests with 'POLICE' on them and ran about 10 kms each. Over 36,000 people took part in the event.

Will this become a standard feature at other major marathons?...London, Berlin, New York???

Highlights of the Irish Indoor Championships...Sun 22nd Feb 2015

One of the main events on the Irish Athletics calendar is the National Indoor Championships in February every year. This is supposed to be one of the highlights of Irish Athletics but the turnout in some events was pretty abysmal.

I had a look on Saturday evening at the results and noticed just two women listed in the womens 3000m. Fair enough I though, the results aren't complete yet. However, that was the actual result!

1 MCCAMBRIDGE Maria    Dundrum South Dublin A.C.    9:26.77
2 MOORE Niamh        U.C.C. A.C.        10:43.53

Just to clarify. A member of any club could have run in this at 10 minute mile pace and got a bronze national medal.

The full results can be found HERE , just click on the event. RTE have 51 minutes of highlights on their RTE Player Service HERE

One of the most interesting and biggest suprises of the championships was the performance of 15 year old Ciara Neville of Emerald AC in Limerick. In the womens 60m hurdles, she finished second in a time which put her 12th on the Irish All Time list. You can see that race in the coverage at 13:40.

1 MCMANUS Catherine    Dublin City Harriers A.C.    8.44
2 NEVILLE Ciara        Emerald A.C.        8.71
3 DAWKINS Shannen    St. Joseph's A.C.        9.14
4 FUSSEY Niamh        St Peters        9.83

Ciara Neville of Emerald AC...#108, Kelly Proper #44 & Phil Healy #88
In the senior womens 60m race, Ciara Neville finished second again but this time, she finished ahead of the likes of Phil Healy and Catherine McManus who were part of the 4x100m Irish relay team that went to the European Championships last year.

1 PROPER Kelly        Ferrybank A.C.        7.38
2 NEVILLE Ciara        Emerald A.C.        7.46
3 MCMANUS Catherine    Dublin City Harriers A.C.    7.50
4 HEALY Phil        Bandon A.C.        7.51
5 MANNING Cliodhna    Kilkenny City Harriers A.C.    7.53
6 BRADY Claire        Celbridge A.C.        7.55
7 MURRAY Sarah        Fingallians A.C.        7.60
8 FORKAN Aishling    Swinford A.C.        7.72

Pretty amazing for a 15 year old. What will she be running when she's 20? That time of 7.46s by the way puts her straight in at joint 10th on the Irish All Time list.

Coverage of the womens 60m race starts at about 31:30 in the highlights.

Notice...Crosshaven 8km road race - Wed 29th Apr 2015

Last year, this race was held on a sunny evening at the end of April and it got a good turnout of over 200 runners. Building on that success, it is back again this year on Wednesday the 29th of April 2015 at 7:30 pm. Considering that Crosshaven is only a short drive from Cork City and Carrigaline, it should get a good turnout again.

The entry fee is €10 and you can pre-register if you want to via the Athletics Ireland website HERE

You can also of course enter on the day. The race has an Athletics Ireland licence and has been properly measured by Jones Counter.

As for the race course, it is a little different in that it is 8kms as opposed to 5 miles so it's like the GR8KM in Mitchelstown in that respect. The race starts in the square...up to Camden....back down....out past the Yacht Club and back to the finish in the square.

If it's a sunny evening then it should be a great spot for a race. More info on...

Photo of the Dry Fit top for the Cork BHAA race next Sunday 1st March

As outlined in a previous post, the Cork BHAA Gas Networks Ireland 5k road race is coming up in Cork City on Sunday the 1st of March at 11am.

One of the features of this event is that they are giving out dry fit tops to the first 500 to enter on the day. Considering that the race only costs €5 for registered runners then it's really good value. Even the non-reg entry fee of €8 is pretty good. Remember, it's the first 500 to enter, not the first 500 across the finish line. Get there early.

The flat course being used is the exact same as the one for the John Buckley Sports 5k. You can find out more info about it here... http://munsterraceroutes.blogspot.ie/2013/01/cork013.html

All proceeds from the race go towards the Rebel Wheelers charity....see the race notice

From the organisers....A free racing t-shirt is on offer for the first 500 to register for the Gas Networks Ireland BHAA 5k run that takes place in Cork Marina this Sunday March 1st. Registration from 9.30am with the race start at 11am. The race is part of the Cork Business Houses Athletics Association (BHAA) programme and runners of all abilities and fitness levels are welcome to take part. All entry proceeds will go to Rebel Wheelers, a sports club supporting children with physical disabilities. Further information on www.corkbhaa.com.

Sports Ability Seminar...CIT...Thurs 5th March 2015

The Cork Sports Partnership are organising a Sports Ability Seminar in CIT on Thursday 5th March 2015. From a road race point of view, one of the presentations to note is that on Jerry Forde! :o)

Jerry has completed more than 300 marathons at this stage and quite possibly has done more marathons as a wheelchair athlete than anyone else in the world.

On a more local level, Jerry is the only wheelchair athlete taking part in any of the races around Cork and Munster. From time to time, you might notice someone else but in general, it's Jerry is on his own. I can't help wondering if there are others out there who might be introduced to the sport and benefit from it? Maybe it's just a case that the idea has to spread around and something like this seminar might help. Details below...

Results of the Mealagh Valley 10 mile road race...Sun 22nd Feb 2015

It looked early on this morning that conditions for this race were going to be pretty wet with high winds and driving rain. It may have been enough to deter some people from traveling but the heavy rain cleared the south-west of the country by race time.

Just remember when you are looking at the results, this is probably one of the hardest 10 mile road races in the country. As you can see, Elton Heffernan won it but his time of 58:10 would probably be 2-3 minutes quicker on a flatter course.

1 58:10 HEFFERNAN, Elton    Togher AC    M 05:48.9
2 58:32 CORBETT, Michael    St. Finbarrs AC    M 05:51.1

Britain's Mo Farah breaks 2 mile record in Birmingham

Mo Farah of Britain broke the 2 mile world record with a time of 8m 03.4s at an indoor track in Birmingham on Saturday 21st Feb 2015. The previous record of 8m 04.34 was set by Kenenisa Bekele.

This was the first world record for the double Olympic champion. In a post race interview with BBC Sport, Farah said...."This means a lot to me. I love representing my country, giving something back to all the people. Unbelievable. Definitely, it's about setting myself a goal and knowing what I want out of the year. It's two different things going for a world record or going for a championship. I shouldn't get carried away, it's only two miles indoors, but at the same time it would be nice to be able to do what I can do for 10k, if I can go close or break it."

Earlier in the week, there was a public row conducted on Twitter between Farah and Great Britain team-mate Andy Vernon. After the race, Vernon tweeted.... "Everything aside that was a cracking run @Mo-Farah. Congratulations on the new WR."

First evening race of the Summer...Ballintotis 4 mile - Thurs 16th April 2015

After a long winter of dark evenings, it's time to look ahead to the upcoming summer season of evening road races. In Cork, the tradition has been that the Ballintotis 4 mile opens the summer season of evening races and the Ballycotton 5 at the end of August brings it to a close.

This year, the Ballintotis 4 mile will be held on Thursday the 16th of April at 8pm. Last year, they  managed to use manual timing to record almost 1000 runners which was an impressive feat considering the distance is only 4 miles and there would be a lot of runners finishing at the same time.

A new development this year is the introduction of chip timing. As a participant, you won't really notice any difference except that your time should be more accurate. If they have a timing mat at the start line then your time doesn't start until you cross it. In previous years, your time was based on when the gun went off but if you were near the back then it could take you a while to cross the start line. It also makes life a lot easier for the organisers behind the scenes.

You can see a preview of the course HERE

You can pre-enter the race HERE

You can also enter on the evening of the race.

Please note there is no on line entry for walkers, who register on the evening of the race in Ballintotis

Here is some info from the organisers...

The First Evening 4 mile Road Race of 2015

BALLINTOTIS 4 MILE ROAD RACE
In Association With East Cork A.C
THURSDAY APRIL 16th 2015
Chip Timing To Be Introduced In Ballintotis
=============================================

The countdown is underway to the 2015 Ballintotis 4 Mile Road Race which takes place on Thursday April 16th – 8pm. After last year’s very successful event which attracted 996 runners and was won for the fifth year in a row by James McCarthy of East Cork AC, another big entry is expected this time around.

Chip timing at start and finish will be introduced this year and with it comes the opportunity to pre register.  On line entry will be open from Monday March 9th until 12 midnight on Monday April 13th. Thereafter there will still be the opportunity to register at Race HQ in Ballintotis Community Centre. Registration will be open there from 5.30pm to 7pm on the evening prior to the race and again from 1pm onwards on race day Thursday April 16th. Entry fee is 10 euro (plus administration fee if availing of the convenient on line entry) By logging on to www.ballintotis.com from March 9th and following the link to PRECISION TIMING, participants will be able to pre register and also find out the latest pre-race news.

This year’s race will again feature a very generous list of prizes with individual prizes to the top 6 men and women across the line. There also be 1st, 2nd and 3rd in all categories and a host of spot prizes to be won. Each participant in the race will also receive a souvenir of the occasion.

Both Castlemartyr Resort and Trabolgan Holiday Centre have again confirmed that they will sponsor the top prizes. Castlemartyr Resort are offering 1 year free membership of their magnificent Leisure Centre for the race winner and leading lady with Trobolgan providing an extended weekend break for both runners up.

The Ballintotis 4 Mile Race is of course held in association with East Cork AC and with the assistance of Ballycotton Running Promotions.

Highs and Lows of the AIT International Grand Prix...Wed 18th Feb 2015

The AIT International Arena Athletics Grand Prix was held in Athlone on Wednesday the 18th of February 2015. It would seem that all didn't go according to plan with a torrent of criticism last night and today on various social media sources.

Some of the main issues seem to have been...
1) Numerous fault starts in the sprint events...so many that it seemed to be more equipment related than anything to do with the athletes.
2) The clock didn't start for the womens 60m final and some of the international athletes refused to re-run the race.
3) TV coverage that ended in the middle of the first sub 4 minute indoor mile in Ireland.

On the Jumping the Gun website, athletics columnist Cathal Dennehy didn't mince his words when he said the following...."It’s not an unusual occurrence in Irish athletics, where the very idea that you criticise someone who is volunteering is usually seen as blasphemous. Does this mean, though, that any such incompetence should be excused, that we should all just lope along and accept that in Ireland, the attitude of ‘ah sure, look, it’ll be grand’ will always prevail?"

One of the highlights of the night was Mutaz Essa Barshim from Qater in the high jump with an Asian indoor record of 2:41m. He was so far over the bar that there is a very real possibility that he may well break the world record of 2.45m in the not too distant future.

Reminder...Mealagh Valley 10 mile & 5k next Sunday 22nd Feb 2015

Just a reminder that the Mealagh Valley 10 mile road race near Bantry in West Cork is coming up next Sunday the 22nd of February. While it is certainly one of the most challenging 10 mile courses out there, it is really a well organised event with all the local community getting involved.

There is also a 5k run if someone wants to run the shorter distance. It's a small bit hilly ;o) ......but it's almost impossible to find a flat course in this area.

You can pre-enter or enter on the day.

More info including previews of both courses in this earlier post.

Review of the PUMA Pure Nightcat Jacket

I was recently sent a PUMA running jacket for preview. As always, I stated clearly that I would do a preview on the basis that it had to be honest. If I found fault with something or I didn't like something then I would say so.

The jacket I was sent was the PUMA NightCat Jacket. This is it below. I've been running in this for a while now and I find it a nice jacket to wear. The material is light enough that you don't really overheat in it. I've being using it in the cold weather when it was down around 4 deg C and it certainly kept the wind out. I also tried it in light rain and it seemed pretty good. I could see the water drops forming little beads on the surface of the garment rather than soaking straight in. I looked it up on the net and the jacket is not described as waterproof. It's a bit like most running jackets....if it is misty or if the rain is very light and for a short period of time then you're fine. If the rain is torrential then you're going to get wet.

This is the rear of the jacket. It shows the fine pattern a bit better and the ventilation holes.

The jacket I have been using in the past was a yellow Ron Hill one. One obvious advantage of the yellow jacket is that it's a bit more visible during the day but other than that, this is a really nice jacket and does the job.

Here is some product info.....The PUMA Pure NightCat Jacket is made with VisiCELL materials to keep you visible in the darker winter months. With great freedom of movement and improved ventilation this jacket is the perfect addition to your running wardrobe.

VisiCELL...Highly reflective materials are designed to enhance other’s awareness of you in dim light situations, and keep your body visible while you train or play.

3M reflective yarns and additional reflective items for enhanced visibility in low light condition
Lazercut holes in the back for improved air circulation at critical heat zones
Anatomical shaped collar to avoid friction at the hair line
Articulated sleeves for improved flexibility and freedom of movement
Zip pocket with earphone loop on the inside

Men’s NightCat Jacket
RRP €60
Stockist – http://amphibianking.ie
Women’s NightCat Jacket
RRP €60
Stockist – http://amphibianking.ie

I also tried it out at night and took a photo with a flash from a camera. As you can see below, it's only then that you really see the effect of the stripes. It's almost like wearing a high viz jacket. It's suprising just how bright it is and while the yellow jacket I have has some small luminous strips, it's nothing as prominent as this.

I guess the bottom line is would I buy it if I was looking for a running jacket and I'd have to say yes. If you are interested in one then click on the links above or ask a running store that stocks PUMA running gear.

Notice...Charity 4 mile fun run/walk in Whitegate - Sat 28th Feb 2015

From the organisers.......On the 28th February there is a Run /Walk starting at Whitegate School 10am for walkers and 11am for runners. Martin Coleman was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease in April 2011. We need to raise 10,000 euro to enable us to purchase a Smartbox and software (SB Mounted) for Martin. The smartbox Tablet will give Martin back the ability to ring people, to go on the internet, to change the TV channel and work any infrared device. This is vital as this will enable Martin to keep up with the world. Pre-Reg from 6-8pm on Fri 27th Feb or early on morning of run.

Notice...Great Island 10 mile & 4 mile road race, Cobh - Sun 12th Apr 2015

Another big 10 mile road race coming up in Cork is the Great Island 10 in Cobh on Sunday, the 12th of April 2015 at 10:30am. Last year, they got 573 runners out and it looks likely to be equally popular again this year.

All of the proceeds from this race go towards the Irish Cancer Society. When this race was first set up in 2010, the organisers had a target of raising €100,000 in the space of 5 years. In 2013, they hit the €100k mark one year early. The aim now is to build on that success and to continue to raise much needed funds for this charity.

One major change this year will be the inclusion of a 4 mile race. In previous years, this was a 5k fun run but it will be a properly measured and timed road race this year. Anyone considering this shouldn't be put off thinking it's just for serious runners. It's open to everyone...runners, joggers and walkers...the whole idea is to raise as much money for charity.

Entries....You can enter online HERE ...€11.50 for the 4 mile and €21.50 for the 10 mile.

Link to postal entries HERE

The race website is HERE.

Course Preview...A preview of the 10 mile course can be seen HERE and a preview of the 4 mile course HERE

From the organisers......“The Great Island 10 Mile Road Race” Cobh
THE IRISH CANCER SOCIETY NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT APRIL 12th 2015 @ 10.30AM, COBH, CO CORK

Web: www.greatisland10.com

The sixth annual ‘Great Island 10 Mile Road Race’ takes place on April 12th 2015 at 10.30am and once again it is being arranged for the benefit of the Irish Cancer Society, with special emphasis on Palliative Care.  A new 4 Mile Road Race will also take place on the same day for those less inclined to run the 10 Mile.  If all the above are not for you and you still want to be part of the day then come along and join us in our Sponsored Walk leaving at 10.00am from the Community Centre or alternatively hold a fundraiser e.g. cake sale, coffee morning, pancake afternoon and contact us for a sponsor card. This is a great family day out while also raising awareness to the cause.  All events will finish at the GPO in the centre of the town to disco music.  For more details on any of the above please visit our website

This year the run takes on an extra dimension with the introduction of our 4 Mile Road Race which will start at Super Value @ 10.45am  We hope to see this grow over the coming years but this is only possible with your support.

Our very own Sonia O Sullivan along with Cork Footballer, Graham Canty have both over the years leant great support to this race. For that we are very grateful.

The feedback from those taking part over the last couple of years has been extremely positive and reflects very favourably on the race itself, the scenery that Cobh has to offer and the support the runners receive from local residents. All this has combined to make this event a very enjoyable experience for all involved.

GREAT CAUSE, GREAT COURSE, GREAT CHALLENGE

The object of this exercise is to raise as much money as possible to ensure that the Palliative Care service is available for those unfortunate enough to need it.
Palliative care offers cancer sufferers the opportunity to spend their remaining time in the relative comfort of their own homes surrounded by those they love while ensuring them the dignity and privacy that only a home can offer.  It is impossible to put a price on such a service  and it’s free.

We are looking for people to run, walk, help with stewarding or hold fundraisers for us. Sponsorship cards are available from sonyaomurphy@gmail.com and she can also be contacted on 087 7904895.

More developments at Tramore Valley Park in Cork City...

At the start of 2013, I had a post up about the proposed master plan for the new Tramore Valley Park in Cork City. A small number of 5k races were held there in 2011 to 2013 but since then, I haven't heard of any major developments. There has been talk about opening dates but it seems to get pushed back every year.

It was announced within the last week that the National Transport Authority has approved funding in 2015 for the following...

1) The preparing of preliminary design and planning of the overbridge across the N40 (South Ring Road) linking Tramore Valley Park to Grange.

2) Provision of a cycle track from the roundabout on the South Douglas Road to the Tramore Valley Park.

It is envisioned that both projects will link into the Half-Moon Lane which will be another access point.

On the first point, the approval is for part of the 'design and planning' stages but getting the funding to build the actual bridge will be another story. It does show however that the intent is there. Here is an artists impression of what it might look like from the master plan...

Whether it ends up looking like that or something scaled down is another issue.

The path from Douglas will give cyclists, walkers and runners more route options once it is in place and the park opens. It's a slow process but at least there is some progress.

Once the park does open, it would be an obvious place for a 5k parkrun. Based on other venues in Cork, it should easily get well in excess of 100 runners a week. We'll have to wait and see.

Kenyan runner crawls her way to 3rd place finish in Austin Marathon

At the recent Austin Marathon, there was a dramatic end to the womens race when the front runner Hyvon Ngetich from Kenya hit the 'marathon wall' with just a few kms to go. At the very end, she was reduced to crawling over the finish line for a time of 3:04:02. In a post race interview, she said that she has no memory of the last few kms.

Results & photos of the Carrigaline 5 mile road race...Sun 15th Feb 2015

A total of 379 runners turned out for this years Carrigaline 5 mile road race. Organised by Eagle AC, this was up 24% on the numbers in 2014.

In the mens race, Alan O'Shea of Bantry AC was the clear winner while in the womens race, it was a different affair. With 50 metres to go, Laoise Ní Thuama was the clear leader but Helen Leonard of Leevale AC put in a big kick to catch her. Both crossed the line together but running at different speed so it was impossible to know for sure who finished first. As a result, a tied finish was declared.

Laoise Ni Thuama was a former juvenile athlete with Leevale and has spent the last six years in Australia. Last May, she won the Australian version of the Wings for Life World Run. For her prize, she’s won a trip this this year’s Cape Town Wings for Life event.

The race website for the Mallow 10 mile road race has now been updated with a list of all those who have entered. If you are one of those then you should check the list to make sure they have your name spelt correctly, your club if any is correct and you are in the correct age category.

11 year old Maggie Sillet from Cork wins 2k race in Mount Juliet

We're all over the place on the blog this week....from 9 year olds running 5k's to 80 year old running half-marathons. This time, it's back to the other end of the spectrum again and something a bit more local. While the blog concentrates on adults running in races, it's important to acknowledge some of the up and coming local talent as well.

Well done to 11 year old Maggie Sillett from Ballymore Cobh AC who won a 2k race in Mount Juliet in Kilkenny today in a time of 7m 11s. Maggie is of course following on the footsteps of Sonia O'Sullivan who won many juvenile races for the club.

Notice from Ballycotton Running Promotions about running the BC10 course

Notice from Ballycotton Running Promotions - One of the (some would say many) idiosyncrasies associated with the Ballycotton ‘10’ is the fixation of running the ten-mile course prior to race day. For the past number of years, once Christmas has passed the local roads witness an influx of lyra-clad fluorescent-wearing individuals on a daily basis, sometimes alone and sometimes as part of a group that resemble the total number who ran the first race back in 1978.

While we on the organising committee are at a loss to explain this compulsion - maybe we are too close to the action - we would like to emphasise two important points now that race day is drawing near:

1) In view of the ever-increasing traffic on the one road into and out of the village, would people please exercise great care as they run, especially if in groups.

2) In recent days, we have received the following from the local Development Group regarding discarded bottles on the route which people might also note:

Ballycotton Development Ltd had their AGM in December.  Following on from that there was a meeting in January in which a Tidy Town Working Group was formed.  The mission/objective of this Tidy Town Working Group is about having pride in our community.

In light of the upcoming Ballycotton ‘10’ and very conscious of runners training over the route these remaining few weeks, we would appreciate if attention could be brought to all runners that any bottles they take with them on the route, that they dispose of same properly and in an environmental friendly manner. This will also go a long way to supporting the Tidy Town Working Group in their endeavour to keep our village litter free.

We understand that on race day, litter controls will be put in place - however, our request is really in the build up to the race itself.

Notice...Cork BHAA Gas Networks Ireland 5k road race - Sun 1st Mar 2015

This 5k race is coming up on Sunday the 1st of March near Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Cork City and is sure to be very popular with a lot of runners.

As you can see from the race flyer above, there is a free dry fit top for the first 500 entrants. Considering that registered BHAA runners only pay €5 then it's very good value. For non-reg runners, it's €8 but it's still great value.

Add to that the fact the course is one of the fastest around and there is a full spread afterwards then it's sure to attract big numbers.

This Cork BHAA race is organised in association with Gas Networks Ireland and all proceeds are going to the Rebel Wheelers....a charity which aims to give those with a disability access to sport. You can see their website here.... http://rebelwheelers.com/

Kids from Cork charity Rebel Wheelers join staff and runners from Gas Networks Ireland as they gear up for the Gas Networks Ireland BHAA 5k run that takes place in Cork Marina on March 1st. The race is part of the Cork Business Houses Athletics Association (BHAA) programme and runners of all abilities and fitness levels are welcome to take part. All entry proceeds will go to Rebel Wheelers. Free t-shirt for the first 500 to register on the day. Further information on www.corkbhaa.com
The course being used is the exact same as the one for the John Buckley Sports 5k. You can find out more info about it here... http://munsterraceroutes.blogspot.ie/2013/01/cork013.html

80 year old woman runs half-marathon in 2:13:23 to set new American record

Here's a story for anyone who thinks the half-marathon distance is too far or running under 2:15 for a half is too fast.

At the start of February, an 80 year old American woman named Anne Garrett ran the Surf City Half-Marathon in California in a time of 2h 13m 23s. That was an American record for the 80-84 year old age group.

Having grown up as a child in Northern Ireland, she had no interest in running until she started at the age of 72. In a recent interview, she said......"I never even thought of running because nobody in my family or nobody that I knew, really, did any running. It has opened up a whole new way of life for me. I just don’t feel my age, to be quite honest with you. Sometimes when I run, my legs feel my age but my mind doesn’t.”

Reminder...Carrigaline 5 mile road race - Sun 15th Feb 2015

One of the other big races this weekend in Cork is of course the Carrigaline 5 mile road race on Sunday, 15th of Feb at 11am. Located just to the south of Cork City, it should be within easy reach for a lot of people. Coming just 3 weeks before the Ballycotton '10' on the 8th of March, it is ideally placed to test your fitness level to see what it's like. The race is organised by Eagle AC.

The town of Carrigaline is only five miles south of the South Ring Road.

Coming just 3 weeks before the Ballycotton 10, it is also an ideal test if you know what kind of pace you should run the 10 miles in. To get your best 10 mile time, you should run at a steady even pace or close to it. Run too fast in the first half and your second half will be much slower. Your fitness will change very little in 3 weeks so whatever time you get in Carrigaline on Sunday should give a good idea of your 10 mile form...assuming you have done the training to run 10 miles ;o)

To estimate your 10 mile time from your 5 mile result, have a look at this chart HERE.

Entries......The entry fee for 2015 is €10. Two Euro of this will be donated to local charities. It also includes a 20% off voucher for running items  in the Edge Sports Shop.

You can enter on the day in the local community hall in Carrigaline between 9:30am and 10:40am. There will also be a special entry desk for those who pre-enter and want to avoid the queues on the day.

Pre-Entry...You can pre-enter here until 12 noon on Friday...http://www.active.com/cork-cork/running/races/eagle-ac-carrigaline-5-mile-2015

Anyone who pre-enters gets put into a draw for a €50 One4All voucher.

Changing and showers for ladies upstairs, changing only for gents in main hall.

Race Sponsor......One of the main sponsors for the race is The Edge Sports Shop. They will be giving out 20% discount vouchers for running gear to all race entrants. Obviously the amount saved at the time of purchase may well exceed the cost of the race entry so it makes sense to get your hands on one. For example, if you spend €50 with the discount voucher, you save €10...the race entry fee.

From the sponsor.....The Edge Sports shop Specialises in Running, Cycling, Swimming and Triathlon. All sales staff participate in at least one but generally two or more of the sports and are able to give excellent advise to customers. The Superstore boasts a large Running Department and Swimming Department on the 1st floor; with stacks of bikes, clothing, accessories and electronics on the ground floor. Video Running Gait Analysis is available on demand at both shops to help customers select the best shoe for their running needs.

They have two shops in Cork City. One on the North Main Street in the city centre and a much larger superstore out by the Kinsale Road Roundabout. If you look at the preview for the Tramore Vally 5k race back in 2011, you'll find a map showing the exact location.

The Course...A full preview of the full course with photos is available at http://munsterraceroutes.blogspot.ie/2013/01/cork001.html

Reminder...Kilworth 5k race race - Sun 15th Feb 2015

This is a busy weekend coming up with two road races on the Sunday the 15th of February. In Kilworth near Fermoy, there is the FACE 5k which starts at 12 noon. All proceeds from this race go towards the education of children with special needs.

All the info can be found on the race website... http://face5k.wordpress.com/

You can find maps and a preview of the course at http://munsterraceroutes.blogspot.ie/2013/01/cork058_29.html

Togher AC donate €1800 to Cork Mental Health Foundation...

Togher Athletic Club held a successful 5k race back at the end of December 2014. On the day, 321 runners took part. The sponsor for the race was Right Price Tiles.

With the proceeds from the race, the Togher AC committee recently presented a cheque for €1800  to Brendan McCarthy of the Cork Mental Health Foundation & Housing Association.

The race will take place again on the 28th of December 2015.

9 year old sets 5k record of 18:30

I came across this a few days ago. In the US, Zach Blum ran a world record time of 18:30 for a 9 year old for 5 kms. The record was set last November and he finished 12th overall out of nearly 400 finishers.

The fourth grader from Tustin, California, started training properly about a year ago when he joined the Equalizers Track Club. He now plans to break the 5000m time on the track for a 9 year old which is 18:41.3

Here is the current list of record times for boys and girls up to 12 years old.

10 mile races in May...Castleisland and Fermoy

Following on from the announcement by Bandon AC that they wont be holding a half-marathon this year, here are two 10 milers that are coming up in mid-May. Unfortunately, they're on the same day! A bit like waiting for a bus and two come along together ;o)

An Ríocht AC are organising a 10 mile road race in Castleisland, Co.Kerry on Sunday the 17th of May. This is now running a few years and is well established.

On the same day, there is a new 10 mile race coming up near Fermoy in NE Cork.

Which one people decide to do I would guess will probably depend on which one is closer.  It's a pity that they are on the same day but it just goes to show just how many races are on the calendar at the moment. More details at a later date.

Clonakilty Parkrun one year on...

There are currently three 5k parkruns in Co.Cork and the second one to start was in Clonakilty. The first one there was held at the start of February 2014 and the one last Saturday marked the first anniversary.

As you can see from the chart above, the numbers at the start were high and then reduced somewhat as expected after the initial novelty and enthusiasm wore off. The numbers have continued around the 25-30 mark for most of the second half of 2014 but have picked up recently since the start of the new year. Perhaps the recent increase has something to do with the Operation Transformation TV show?

This 5k parkrun is held every Saturday morning in Clonakilty and it's free. You just need to be registered with parkrun to take part....all based on having a bar code to identify yourself. You can find out more about the Clonakilty parkrun HERE
