Results of the Courtmacsherry 10k road race...Fri 30th June 2017
There was another big turnout for this years Courtmacsherry 10k road race with 359 runners taking part. As can be seen from the chart above, it was nearly 19% up on last year and was just a handful short of the record set back in 2012.
Obviously the dry sunny weather helped but a lot of races in West Cork have seen their numbers collapse recently. The Courtmacsherry race in contrast seems to be doing exceptionally well.

Notice...Donoughmore 7 mile road race - Fri 21st July 2017
The annual Donoughmore 7 mile road race is coming up on Friday, the 21st of July 2017.
As road races go, this one is really unique as it's the only 7 mile road race on the calendar. At first, it might seem like a bit of an odd distance but don''t let that put you off. It's really is a well organised race on country roads to the north-west of Cork City....even if it is a little bit hilly ;o)
Directions...Donoughmore is located about 15 miles north-west of Cork City. If you are coming out the Ballincollig bypass or the Carrigrohane straight, look for directions for the R579 road to Nad / Banteer / Kanturk. Stay on this road for about 10 miles and keep a lookout for the turn off right to Donoughmore. Then follow the signs for Stuake. The village is about 2 miles off the R579 road. See map above.
Entries......Entries are taken at the local community hall in the village and it costs €10 which includes a Donoughmore 7 dry-fit top.
Course Preview....A full preview of the course with maps and photos can be seen HERE
The race is organised by Donoughmore Athletic Club. Their website is http://www.dm7.ie/

New surface for athletics track in Kerry...
There have been two contrasting stories about athletic tracks in Ireland over the last two weeks.
Last week, Ian O'Riordan of the Irish Times wrote an article about the destruction of the athletics track in University College Dublin, Considering it is now being used as a car park in a busy university and there is no funding for a replacement, it would seem as if it isn't coming back any time soon.
In Kerry, the only full size athletics track is in Castleisland and is owned by An RÃocht AC. This was built some time ago and the track surface had begun to show a lot of signs of wear and tear.
This is how it used to look...
The club embarked on a fundraising programme to resurface the track and this is what it looks like now...
In fact, this is only the third two tone track in Europe.
While the new surface is just really a new version of the old one, it still looks pretty cool. It's also a major investment in athletics for the Kerry and Munster region.

Irish Times article on Cork runner Claire McCarthy
Claire McCarthy of Leevale AC is currently in training for the marathon at the IAAF World Championships in London in August. Ian O'Riordan of the Irish Times caught up with her for an interview...
"Although Claire McCarthy reckons the benefits are probably more practical, or else something to do with her own persistence. As the mother of four sons – aged 12, 10, six and two – and back training twice daily for the women’s marathon at the World Championships in London in August, the practicalities alone have certainly helped make her a better runner."

Guest article...Last on the Road by John Walshe
LAST ON THE ROAD...By John Walshe
Winning a marathon is an honour that few attain, and when it happens there is no disputing the identity of the first man and first woman across the line. Finishing last is a different matter, and less easy to determine.
Although all the major marathons have a cut-off point of seven or eight hours, there are still people who persist in keeping going, at their own risk, to make it home as darkness falls. This year in London you had the case of Tom Harrison who crawled the course on his knees dressed as a gorilla, taking over six days to complete the distance. So was he the last finisher?
Forty years ago, things were much simpler, as you’ll discover if you read on. The BLE National Marathon of 1977 took place from the Galway town of Loughrea on the Bank Holiday Sunday of June 5th. As no major games places were up for grabs, there wasn’t as much at stake as the previous year in Limerick when the race acted as trial for the Montreal Olympics.

Results of the St.Mary's Ladies Football 5k in Doneraile Park...Sat 17th June 2017
A total of 76 people took part in this 5k in Doneraile Park organised by St.Mary's Ladies Football Club. That's a big drop from the 126 that took part in the equivalent 2016 race , perhaps a sign that there are now too many 5k races in Doneraile Park?

Ballincollig 5k parkrun is one year old...Sat 17th June 2017
The 5k parkrun in Ballincollig Regional Park started on Saturday the 18th of June 2016 and the numbers in the last year are shown below...
A ... The very first 5k parkrun in Ballincollig attracts a large crowd of 279. Obviously there is a novelty factor at the start but it drops straight away rather than gradually as you might expect. Perhaps due to all the road races at this time of year?
B ... For the rest of the summer, the numbers settle at a very respectable 200 or so per week.
C ... Small spike due to I think to a small Operation Transformation promotion.
D ... For the rest of 2016, the number stay at roughly 200 per week. Noticeable drop in the run up to Christmas.
E ... Between New Year resolutions and Operation Transformation, there is a huge surge in number reaching a peak on the 21st of Jan 2017 with 448 taking part. The numbers gradually reduce but the publicity from Operation Transformation is a factor until the start of March 2017.
F ... The average numbers for the late Spring and early Summer are about the 270 mark, about 35% than the Summer months of 2016.
Overall... Following on from the disappointment of the suspension of the parkrun in Tramore Valley Park in Cork City, the Ballincollig event has been a major success. Runners in and near the city now have a timed 5k every Saturday morning in a nice quiet location and it's free!
All of this would not have been possible with initial funding from Cork Sports Partnership and of course, all the volunteers that turn out every week to make it happen.
