Preview of the Ballinascarthy 10 km road race...Fri 1st July 2011

This 10 km road race is coming up on Friday evening, the 1st of July at 8pm. All proceeds are in aid of the COPE Foundation so this is a race well worth attending.

Location......if you are not sure of where Ballinascarthy then it's easy to find. It's on the main Bandon to Clonakilty road in west Cork.........just stay on the N71 and you can't get lost.

As you enter the village, the field on the right hand side alongside the community hall will be used for parking and also on the left hand side of the main road, by the creamery. Marshals will be on standby directing runners.

The one thing thats hard to miss in the village is of course the full size silver coloured model of a car. A certain William Ford emigrated from this area in the mid 19th century to Detroit, Michigan in the USA. His son Henry Ford went on to create the Ford Motor Company and manufactured the famous Model T Ford which revolutionised motoring and transport in the early part of the 20th century.

Entries.........These will be taken in the Community Hall. The fee is €10. Prizes will be awarded on the night for Men 1st, 2nd, 3rd; Women 1st, 2nd, 3rd; 1st over 40, 50, 60; Team Prize for Men’s & Women’s categories.

Course........Probably not the fastest of courses as it has a few nice  pulls in it. However for the two main hills that are in it, there is plenty of downhill running on the other side.

The race starts about 2-300 metres to the west of Ballinascarthy. This is the view from the start line looking back down the road towards the village. You take the left here when you start and when you finish the loop, you will be passing this point again and taking the right as you run down the road to the finish by the community centre.

After an initial pull, the road flattens out as you pass the old ruined mill.....

..........and around the 1 mile mark, you join another road....

These 2 pictures show the type of roads used for the course.....narrow and quiet country roads. While there are a number of small pulls, the 2 hills of note come at around 3 miles and 5 miles. The last mile or so is largely downhill and fast.....you pass the junction where the race started.....

.....and on towards the finish very close to the community hall.

After the race, the refreshments and the prizegiving will be in the community hall. If anyone would like to avail of a shower then these are available at the local GAA grounds which is about a mile away. Drive through the village towards Clonakilty and take the first left. Stay on this road for approx 1 mile and the GAA grounds are on the right hand side.

Also post race, Fiona Collins of Bandon Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic will be available on the night to offer rub downs. She will also be assisted by two local physiotherapists, so in all there will be three physiotherapists available.

Overall..........An undulating 10k course on quiet country roads. With the weather forecast for Friday evening being for fine weather and the fact that all proceeds go to a good cause then it's likely to attract a large field.

RTE...This Sporting Life...Catherina McKiernan

This RTE series looks back at the careers of several Irish sports stars. In this particular programme, they looked at the career of Catherina McKiernan, one of the best Irish runners in recent times.

The performances and times she ran back in the 90's were nothing short of amazing....
Winner of 4 silver medals in a row in the World Cross Country Championships......1992-1995
Winner of the European Cross Country Championships in 1994
Winner of the Berlin Marathon in 1997 in a time of 2:23:44, a new Irish record and the fastest debut ever by a woman at the time
Winner of the London Marathon in 1998 in a time of 2:26:26
Winner of the Amsterdam Marathon in the same year in a time of 2:22:23.....avg 5:26 per mile.....beating her previous best time to set a new Irish record.......which still stands to this day. The next closest time by another person is 2:28.
Winner of the Lisbon Half-Marathon in Lisbon in a time of 67:50........an average of 5:10 per mile.

Having watched the video clip, you'd have to wonder if there are other undiscovered 'Catherina McKiernans' out there? People who have the ability to go on and represent their country but are instead wasted on other sports by inward looking schools, clubs or coaches?

The 25 minute programme can be seen on the RTE website HERE until the 6th of July

Sunday, June 26, 2011

Preview of the Shanagarry 5 mile road race - Thurs 23rd June 2011

The 2nd race in the Ballycotton 5 Mile Road Race Summer Series takes place in the small village of Shanagarry in East Cork on Thursday evening at 8pm. Considering that they got 503 for this race last year, then it's likely to be a similar number again.

Directions... If you are coming from Cork, take the N25 East and from the roundabout on the Midleton bypass, take the 3rd exit and follow the main R629 Midleton to Ballycotton road. Shanagarry is located on the main road between Cloyne and Ballycotton. If you are coming from Waterford, take a left at Castlemartyr for Ladysbridge and Garryvoe and follow the road on towards Shanagarry.

Parking... Note that due to the large number of cars, there are special parking arrangements. Follow the stewards instructions on the night.

Entries... Entries will be taken in a marquee at the GAA grounds in the centre of the village. There will be 2 queues for entries. If you ran the 1st race in the series in Ballyandreen then check the lists there for your number and join the appropriate queue. If not, join the other queue.

Also, it saves a lot of time if you have the correct entry fee (which is just €5) at the ready.
The race starts at 8pm and people are requested to arrive early in view of the large numbers expected and due to parking facilities this year being some distance away from the race headquarters.

Course...
The race starts just outside the petrol station at the main road junction on the Ballycotton road. It then drops slightly into the hollow by the GAA entrance, up past the road junction where the finish will be, past the church, down again into another slight hollow and up a bit of a pull until the road flattens out as you head towards the 1 mile mark. A pretty fast mile with no major drags.

The 2nd mile is pretty flat. You run down to Garryvoe next to the beach, around a sharp bend and head inland again. A flat fast mile.

The 3rd mile is not so easy. It is basically a long gentle uphill section until you turn off left onto a quiet country road and the 3 mile mark. You can expect to lose some time on the long climb.

The 4th mile starts easy. The first half mile is along a flat road with a great view to the left over the East Cork countryside....

At the next road junction, you take a very sharp left and then the road drops rapidly. It's almost too steep to really run on comfortably. Then it flattens out for a short section and then, you hit the hill! Not as bad as the 'Beast of Ballyandreen' but a nasty one all the same. After the initial shock, the gradient reduces as you hit the 4 mile mark. A tough mile.

For the start of the 5th and final mile, there is still a gradual climb for about 300 metres after the 4 mile mark. Then it flattens out as you negotiate a series of bends with matures trees on either side of the road providing plenty of cover. The last half mile is very fast as it is slightly downhill all the way to the finish.

Note from the organisers...."Regarding the course, we would like to remind runners to keep on the left after passing Garryvoe, there is no advantage to be gained by crossing over to the right and it can also be very dangerous."

Preview of the Dunmanway 10k road race...Sun 19th June 2011 (11am)

This will be the 2nd year of this 10km road race in Dunmanway in west Cork. Last year, they had an entry of 253 runners which was an impressive turnout for a new race. Organised by local club Doheny AC, the 10k course has been accuratedly measured by Jones Counter and has an AAI licence.

Getting there......
Dunmanway is on the R586 Bandon to Bantry road. If you not sure where it is then check the directions on the race website.

Once you get to the town then you have to find the GAA hall which will be used as the race venue....

As you drive through the town, you will pass a Topaz station on your left. Take the next left (see pic above...left). This relief road will take you to the south side of the town and you will come out at a t-junction (see pic above...right). Take a left here.

After 300 metres, you'll cross a bridge, you'll see the Parkway Hotel on your left and the road junction ahead. Take the right here and the GAA hall is just up this road. There should be plenty of direction markers out on the day so you'll find it ok.

Registration...
You can enter online for €8 until 9pm Friday, the 17th. After that, it's €10 on the day.

Prizes.....

They have the usual array of prizes on offer. One thing to note here is the womens course record of 40:39. There is a bonus prize given for setting a new course record and I'd reckon it's very likely that the old one will be broken on Sunday.

Course.....
The start is back down on the relief road....a short distance from the GAA hall....

The road here is reasonably wide and you run back into the town. Plenty of space here to pass people and find your correct pace.

As you begin to leave the town, there is a slight pull before the bridge over the Bandon River as it weaves its way towards Bandon and Kinsale. Around here, you hit the 1 mile mark...

On the far side, there is a short climb for about 300 metres until you turn off right onto a narrow road. From here on, you are on nice quiet country roads with the hills of west Cork in the background...

There are a few small pulls but nothing too serious. On past the 2 mile mark and you reach Ballabuidhe Bridge and cross the Bandon River for the 2nd time...the lowest point of the course.

A sharp right after this and you continue on narrow roads. Eventually, you come out at a T-junction and a wider road...

...you take a left here and there is a small pull now for 400 metres of so...

...and then you turn off right, back on to quiet narrow country roads again and on shortly to the 4 mile mark.

The next 1.5 miles or so are pretty flat. There is however just one climb to deal with just before the 6 mile mark. It is about 400 metres long and comes at a stage of the race when you are most tired.

However once you reach the top, there is a very fast downhill section all the way to the finish line by the GAA hall.

Overall......A nice scenic course. Wide roads at the start to allow the field to thin out, quiet country roads after that. While there are a few climbs, there is nothing too long. As it's within a 45 min drive of Cork City and there is a large catchment of runners in the west Cork region, it's bound to attract a good crowd.

Introduction to running in Cork & Ireland...

This post is for any beginners who have found this website for the first time. This basically shows what kind of running events take place in Cork and in Ireland in general. Note the triangle to the left.......(roughly but not exactly to scale)

A - Track Events.......This would include anything from say 100 metres up to say 5,000 metres. The numbers taking part are generally very small....say 10-20 per race. Usually club athletes only at a high standard. Not suitable for beginners.

B - Inter Club.....Cross Country / Road Championships.......These would be competitions between members of athletic clubs only. The numbers in each race would be reasonably low.....say 30-70.

C - Club Races / BHAA Races......These are by far the most common type of race. Distances can vary from say 5 kms up to say 15 miles (~24 kms). For most races, anyone can enter and you can enter on the day. Some are members of athletic clubs but many are not. Numbers taking part can be anything from say 70 up to 400. A typical entry fee might be say €5 to €20 depending on the type of event it is. Information on these type of races can be found on websites like this one here but in general, they are not really advertised on mainstream media like newspapers, radio, etc.

D - Mass Participation Events....Examples might be the Cork City Marathon, the Dublin City Marathon, Womens mini-marathon, etc. Thousands take part and with advertising in the mainstream media, a lot of the  general public would be aware of the event.

If you are a new runner and you have just completed your first race...say the Cork City Marathon.....then there are plenty of other local races to choose from. One common concern is that beginners think they will be too slow or that they don't want to finish last. All different types of runners take part in the local road races shown as 'C' above....from the very fast to those going at a slow jogging pace. For most races, you just turn up, pay the entry fee and run in the race. You do not need to be a member of a club or anything like that...they are open to anyone. Afterwards, there is ususally water, tea, sandwiches, etc before the prize giving.

If you are interested then why not come along on the day and try one. You will find regular updates on what is happening locally on this website.

(No comments on this post please as I am going to use it as a permanent introduction for beginners coming here for the first time)
