Event Notice...Run in the Dark 5k/10k...Wed 14th Nov 2012

This unique event is coming up in various cities on Wednesday, the 14th of November 2012.  Last year, it was a huge success with well over 400 people taking part in the Cork event alone. This year, they are changing the location of the race as it will now be in the city centre rather than on the Monaghan Road/Centre Park Road circuit.

This is from the organisers.........

Run in the Dark aims to be the biggest multi-location, mass participation running event in the world. And you can be part of it. Join us on Wednesday the 14th of November 2012!

Mark Pollock is a truly inspiring individual. Having lost his sight at the age of 22 Mark has never let that hold him back. He took hold of his life and never looked back competing in the world’s harshest environments across desert, mountain, ocean and polar regions including 6 marathons in 7 days in the Gobi Desert, a race to the South Pole, and the Round Ireland yacht race; all this despite being completely blind. He made his living as a motivational speaker around the globe and inspired many people to think about how to face challenges and make decisions.
Having overcome his blindness tragedy struck again on the 2nd July 2010 when Mark fell from a second story window and suffered a catastrophic spinal injury which has left Mark paralysed from the waist down.

The Mark Pollock Trust was set up by Mark's friends and supporters in order to raise funds for this rehabilitation programme, which will involve a daily aggressive physical therapy programme of up to 3 hours per session, input from physical trainers and physiotherapists and repeat visits to a spinal injuries recovery facility in America called, Project Walk.
Mark Pollock's supporters created Run in the Dark to fuel his ambition to walk again. A spinal cord injured pioneer, he is exploring the frontiers of recovery.

For his strength and determination in overcoming significant physical adversity, his continued inspiration of others in sharing his story and in constantly pushing out new boundaries, in his personal life and as an explorer and adventure racer, Mark Pollock was awarded a People of the Year Award.

Run in the Dark is a running event held simultaneously in 5 official locations - Dublin, Cork, Belfast, London and New York. You can race, run, or walk either 5 km or 10 km in all locations.

If you can’t make it to one of the official locations why not put on your running shoes and register your own pop up event wherever you are. Last year, saw run in the Dark pop-up events in over 20 locations around the world including Paris, Brussels, San Francisco, Neuchatel, Toronto, Dallas, Puerto Rico, Quebec, Amsterdam, Singapore, Sydney.

For more information please log on and sign up at www.runinthedark.org

This is the route of the course in Cork City.....2 laps for the runners and walkers doing the 5 k option, 4 laps for the runners doing the 10k.

More info closer to the event. Please note that entries close on Wednesday, the 7th of November.

Guest Article - Charity or Farce? ...By David O’Dwyer

Guest Article - Charity or Farce? ...By David O’DwyerRunning and marathon running in particular have long been associated with raising money for charity. The Dublin Marathon has raised hundreds of millions of Punts and Euros since 1980 and the London Marathon has raised some £450 million since 1981. Simply completing a marathon however is no longer deemed enough of a challenge for some fund raisers in their stated aim to raise money for their chosen charity. Some sort of edge is required in order to make their marathon challenge stand out among the other participants. This has usually meant some sort of gimmick in order to give their effort some additional novelty. The imagination is the only limiting factor in choosing something from wheelbarrow pushing to running backwards. I can recall an old news clip from one of the early Dublin marathons, possibly from “Reeling in the Years” where someone ran with a ladder on their shoulder! I’m not sure how they fared.

For many dressing up in some form of costume will ensure they stand out from the crowd and get seen on TV. British media coverage of the London marathon and the Great North run is particularly fond of such gimmicks and they receive plenty of TV coverage. These costumes can range from a Super hero outfit to a deep water dive suit! The dressing up in a costume won’t do much for ones performance though, mind you the record for the fastest marathon time dressed as a superhero was set in the London Marathon in April of this year by David Stone(aka Superman) in a not too shabby 2.42.46. There were apparently 35 new Guinness World Records set in London this year and they ranged from Superman to a Panda and even a snail. There was also some guy juggling a football and another solving 100 rubiks cube puzzles as he made his way round the course.

Consider for a moment the issue of falling standards despite the increase in numbers participating. Is it a stretch to say that all of this pageantry is a contributing factor to the overall fall in standards? It would be crazy to suggest that running in a superhero costume is somehow causing the overall standard to fall however it is not crazy to suggest that David Stone could run even faster without his cape flailing in the wind behind him in the London marathon. Yes the aim of the individual is to raise money for charity and not necessarily to run a fast time but is the quality of the event somehow compromised? Or is it a perfect marrying of the two extremes? On the one hand you have elite athletes clocking 2.05 for the marathon and on the other you have Krusty the Clown cartwheeling around the course.

The money that is raised for charity is all very commendable and very much appreciated by the charities in question but is it appropriate to combine it with the elite marathon running? Big City marathons are unique in that they offer the opportunity for “joe public” to run in the same race as world class athletes. It is one of the few opportunities for mere mortals to toe the line with an Olympic Champion. Is it somehow taking away from the race as an athletic event when Haile Gebrselassie is attempting to set a world record while Postman Pat is taking part in the same race? Is dressing up in a costume somehow disrespecting the elites in the field? This is certainly one point of view but the flip side is that it enhances the whole event. It adds a carnival type atmosphere to the whole day and let’s be honest here it’s going to be easier to run the race without wearing a costume so you could argue that it is even harder to complete the marathon while dressed as Mickey Mouse.
This is no doubt an emotive subject and the knee jerk reaction will be where is the harm in it? There is nothing wrong with using marathon running as a method for raising money for charity and if anything it can be argued that it has helped to raise the profile of marathon running. However when you compare it with other sports there is no argument. There is no other sport that combines the sublime with the ridiculous. Would a Connemara Pony be allowed run in the Grand National, or how about completing the Tour de France on a BMX?

One idea that has not caught on is aiming to run the marathon in as fast a time as possible and getting the appropriate sponsorship money for that. Has anyone ever raised money by saying that they’ll run the marathon in a particular time and as a sponsor you give extra money if they beat that time? Now that sounds it would be harder to do than complete the marathon dressed in a Batman suit and cape.

Agree or disagree? Put forward your point of view by clicking on the comment link below...

Preview of the 'Run for Mark in the Dark' charity run - Wed 16th Nov 2011

The ‘Run for Mark in the Dark’ is coming up on Wednesday, November 16th at 7.30pm. It is being run simultaneously in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Belfast. The proceeds of this event will go to the Mark Pollock trust to help Mark with his rehabilitation.

The Cork event takes place on the Monahan Road/Centre Park Road circuit and there are entries on the night too. Option of 5k or 10k distance.

This link is a video about Mark - Please vote for it on the site, the winning charity gets €10K…… http://www.bettertogether.ie/content/mark-pollock

Some information on Mark:

The following clip is of an interview with Mark conducted by the BBC six months after Mark's accident. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12314687

The past year has been incredibly difficult for Mark and while he has dealt with every emotion he is determined not to rest on his laurels. You can check out Mark's blog at www.markpollock.com/blog/blog.asp

He has done a lot of research to find out what he could do and was in hospital for 15 months. He has just been released and is now following a programme of aggressive physical therapy in an attempt to regain any feeling or movement that he can.

‘Run for Mark in the Dark’ is the Trust's first official event, although many friends, old and new, have been hosting running and cycling races, events in their homes and donating directly to the Trust, allowing Mark start to rebuild his life and to start training.

The four fundraising runs will take place in Belfast, Cork, Dublin and Galway simultaneously and range between 4 km and 10km (distances vary depending on the location). Each location has a walking option, so everyone can participate. The cost of the event is €25 per person for this very wothwhile cause. Log onto www.run4mark.com to enter.

On the night....You can also enter on the night at the Clarion hotel. There is plenty of on street parking along Victoria Road. If you are not sure of where the Clarion hotel is then see the map above. It is 530 metres from the hotel to the start line.

Course.......The route used is the Monahan Road / Centre Park Road circuit. The race starts and finishes next to Kennedy Park. The loop is 2.5 kms and you have a choice of doing 2 loops.....5 kms......or 4 loops........10 kms. The course is dead flat and very fast.

In general, the course is well lit with plenty of street lights. The photo below shows the first corner which at the south-east  of the loop. Lots of light here, no issues...

On the north-east corner...shown below....there are plenty of trees. While the leaves are mostly gone at this time of year, it will most likely be the darkest part of the course so watch your footing here...

At the western end of the loop, you are back onto a well lit junction at the roundabout and garage...

Please note that the course will be plenty of race stewards and hi-vis vest are not required on the night.
Post Race.......Runners can use the health club facilities in the Clarion hotel for a shower etc.
A goody bag can be collected be at the Clarion afterwards and they will be selling tee shirts before and after.

Draw for prizes (Top Draw Prize valued at €500 - 2 nights bed and breakfast, one evening meal with a bottle of wine in Kudos bar and approx €50 of pre/post dinner drinks for two people in the Clarion Hotel Cork) in the Clarion after the race also.

Preview of the Gortroe 10k Fun Run in aid of Autism Assist Dogs of Ireland - Sun 16th Oct 2011

This 10km Charity Fun Run is coming up on Sunday, the 16th of October at 12 noon. Organised by  Banteer Macra na FeĂrme, all proceeds are going to Autism Assist Dogs of Ireland (AADI). The race itself is in Gortroe which is approx 10 kms west of Mallow, just off the N72 Killarney road.

AADI provides a valuable service that can have life changing effects for children with autism and their families. Their assistance dogs are provided free of charge. Many children with autism have a tendency to "bolt". They have no sense of danger and do not always want to hold an adults hand. In public the child is attached to their assistance dog, which is under the control of an adult at all times. This makes outings possible and pleasant for all the family.

The AADI are based in Quarterstown Mills in Mallow. You can get more information about Autism Assist Dogs of Ireland in this PDF document HERE and by visiting their website...... http://www.autismassistancedogsireland.ie/index.html

Race Flyer....

Entries.........You can enter on the day with a donation of €10

Getting there.....If you are coming from say the Mallow direction on the N72 Killarney road, then you need to take the turn off for Lombardstown. Note that this is just over 9 kms from the railway bridge near the roundabout in Mallow.

From there, you cross the bridge over the River Blackwater, up the road past the railway crossing and into the village of Lombardstown. Just on the far side of the village, there is a turn off right.

Take this and Gortroe is approx 700 metres up this road. You will find the Gortroe Inn located next to the crossroads....

Course.......Please note that this is a charity event rather than a road race with exact measurements. The course goes in a clockwise direction and is approx 9.4 kms in lenght. The race starts at the crossroads just outside the Gortroe Inn. The finish is next to the telephone pole at the rear of the pub.

There is no getting away from the fact that this race has a tough uphill start. As you get close to the 1 mile mark, the hill eases off slightly...

...before getting tougher again until you turn off right at approx 1.2 miles...

Even though it's a tough start, there are some great views as you are well above the local countryside and you gain height on the slopes of Mount Hillary.

After the turn off, the road gets even narrower as it begins to flatten out. There are some stunning views to the right along this stretch of road...
From roughly the 2 mile mark, the next mile is all downhill so you can expect to make up some lost time here. Eventually you go through a crossroads at around 2.8 miles and you reach the railway level crossing near the 3 mile mark....

At this stage, you are on the valley floor and the roads are mostly flat. At the next junction around 3.4 miles, you turn right and head back towards Gortroe....

From here, the road heads south-east, through the 4 mile mark and around 4.5 miles, it runs parallel to the Blackwater River for a while.

At around the 5 mile mark near where you get to the outskirts of Lombardstown, the road forks......

...and you take the right and run under the railway bridge. From here, there is a pull uphill to the finish line near the rear of the Gortroe Inn.

Overall........It's a charity race in aid of worthwhile cause. Forget about times as the course is not measured and is not supposed to be 10k. While the course is hilly, it is on quiet narrow country roads. On a sunny day, a lovely spot.

There will be some token prizes and refreshments after the run.

Charity 'C Team' in the Cork City Marathon Relay...
Many of you will know doubt know that John Quigley of Eagle AC went through a serious illness last year. Now 12 months later, he is running in the Cork City Marathon Relay with a special team of cancer survivors next Monday. You might read his message below and consider donating to this very worthwhile effort.

The C Team - Cancer Survivors is a very special and unique relay team. Each of the members is a survivor of cancer. The team members are: Dan Byrne, Oesophegeal Cancer Joe Deane, Testicular Cancer Joe Dineen, Prostate Cancer John Quigley, Prostate Cancer John Ryan, Testicular Cancer
Photo: Front: Joe Deane & John Quigley; Rear: John Ryan, Joe Dineen & Dan Byrne

I've opened two pages on mycharity.ie, raising sponsorship for two charities ARC House in Cork and the Irish Cancer Society.

Arc House: http://www.mycharity.ie/event/c_team_-_camcer_survivors_-_arc_house/

Alternatively I also accept cash!!

The primary aims of the group are:
1) To raise the profile and awareness of cancer survivors. We're still here and getting on with life. (It may not be easy, but, hey, we're dealing with it!)
2) To show those facing cancer, whether diagnosed or supporting someone who is dealing with cancer, that we’re getting on with life… and they can too
3) To make contact with other cancer survivors who might join with us in future events and finally
4) (Maybe) raise a bit of money, though this is not a core aim.

Many thanks in advance for your support........John Quigley, Eagle AC

Race Report.......
This 3rd Annual Emer Casey 10k road race took place on what has to be the hottest and brightest racing day so far in Co Cork, in 2009. This was largely a charity fund raiser, with a EUR 20 entry fee for runners, but was staged to normal road racing standards. There was also a walking category. Even though it's very close to the Marathon, a huge field still turned out. Traffic approaching Youghal was quite heavy, as in addition to the race, the Youghal Vintage Car & Bike Festival was taking place, plus many day trippers were taking advantage of the good weather to have a day out at the beach.

Registration and changing were at Pobalscoil Na TrĂonĂ³ide, high up on the hill over Youghal. The start was a short distance up the road, outside the impressive Youghal water tower. The initial mile downhill was quite good, with a view of the sea ahead, but as soon as you hit level ground, the hot conditions were all too apparent. One complaint from several people was that there was only one water station, at 4 miles.Given the hot conditions a second would have been much appreciated.

The race was marked in miles, at each mile. All the junctions were fully supervised by stewards, volunteers, and the Gardai. Several motorbikes also cruised alongside. While the route was not 100% closed to traffic, it was still very quiet. The rise up to the Lighthose at 5.5 miles near the end took a lot out of some people while the finish line was on the beach front road, near the old railway station. The West Waterford crew were also there with their big Seiko clock..............Donal O'Donoghue

Preview of the Youghal 'Emer Casey Memorial' 10km road race - Sun 24th May (1:30pm)
This charity 10km road race and walk takes place next Sunday in the town of Youghal in East Cork at 1:30pm. The is the 3rd year of this event and it's purpose is to raise funds for cancer research. You can find out more about the Emer Casey Foundation at this link...http://www.emercaseyfoundation.com/index.php

Registration...If you are coming from Cork and as you approach Youghal, stay on the bypass. At the top of the hill, take the 1st left. You then go left again, cross over the bridge over the bypass and head in towards Youghal. (If you are coming from Waterford, take the bypass and at the highest point, take the slip road left before the bridge. Proceed towards Youghal). As you head towards Youghal, you'll see the Pobalscoil na Trionoide school where you register for the race. Seeing as how this is a charity event, the entry fee is €20 (free t-shirt included in the entry fee).

Course...The race starts on a height near the registration point. You then run towards the bypass but you turn off left before you get anywhere near it. Then, its a steady drop down until you join the main road into Youghal. The race then basically goes through the town to the far side and then turns around and returns through the town again. The only hill worth talking about is the slight drag after 5.5 miles when you need to pass the small lighthouse on the left. Then around the corner, stay left and finish near the beachfront. If you want to have a closer look at the course, I have put the route up on the MapMyRun website.

Overall...This race is for a good cause and it's worth attending for that reason alone. However, if you are running the full Marathon in Cork, you really must make sure that you do not run too fast. It's just way too close to the Marathon to be doing a fast 10km. Take it easy and jog around.

The ‘C’ Team for the 2009 Cork City Marathon Relay...
I'm sure that most of the regular runners in Cork are aware that John Quigley of Eagle AC went through a serious illness last year. At present, he is trying to put together a 'special' team for the Cork City Marathon Relay. Please read the piece below from John and see if you can help...

"I had a routine blood test three years ago, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in Jan 2008 and had major surgery on May 22nd 2008. I resumed running in August 2008.

With the 'C' word in mind, I’m appealing for relay runners for the Cork City Marathon.

You need to be either living with or recovering from some form of cancer to get on the team, so, thankfully, most people won’t qualify for a place. The primary aim of this relay team is to raise cancer awareness and to show that cancer diagnosis does not necessarily mean the end of your sporting life, in fact participation is one of the best therapies. There are 5 legs to the relay, so those on the team can raise money, if they wish, for their own chosen charity.

Almost all of your blog readers thankfully will not qualify but I’m hoping that they will pass on the message to others they know. I need help to fill the team, so please pass it on! There are plenty of people with cancer, from all sporting backgrounds, e.g. swimming, cycling, running, GAA, soccer, rugby and so on.
Why don’t we get together and do this! I have a few people interested, but not enough to field a team. Several are doing the full marathon. It doesn’t matter how slow you think you are – what we’ve been through takes a heavy toll – what matters is that we will be there!

Contact me at 021-4891903 (home), 087-6261178 (outside office & running hours) or at
eagle262@eircom.net

Just a quick reminder for everyone that the Cork BHAA 'Simon Run' will not take place next next Sunday the 7th of December. As most of you will know, that event had to be cancelled and put back 6 days until Saturday morning, the 13th of December. More details next week...
