The chart above shows the historical numbers at this particular race and as you can see, 2026 saw a return to the levels before 2024.

Doing a quick check of the Cork BHAA races so far in 2026, three were up and seven were down which suggests an easing back of the BHAA race numbers this year.

Results of the Cork BHAA Musgraves 5k - Wed 10th June 2026

The Cork BHAA Musgraves 5k race was held in Cork City on Wed 10th of June 2026 with 770 taking part. That's a 25% increase on last year which is significant.

Unlike last year, the route used less of the Marina this year and more around Pairc Ui Chaoimh and the Marina Park.I think it was the first time that a race went around the north side of the Atlantic Pond where a much wider path was opened earlier this year.

15% Discount...... John Buckley Sports gave out 15% discount to all finishers in the race. Use your race number and present it in the shop to avail of the 15% discount. It will apply to any purchases in their shop which is across from the Opera House in the heart of Cork City. Needless to say, the amount you save with the discount may well exceed the race entry so they are well worth getting. Note that the discount is not restricted to just one item. When you are using it, you can buy several products at the one time and get 15% off the lot.

The expiry date on the race number discount is the 31st of December 2026 so you have plenty of time to use it.

John Buckley Sports shop is across the river from the Opera House.

Addendum... It looks as if there was some issue with the course being too long this year. I checked the Strava account of someone who did the race this year and last year.

It does look as if the BHAA put the start line about 300m too far down the Marina. They admitted there was an issue on Facebook.

Results of the Cork BHAA J&J Innovative Medicine 5k - Sun 8th Feb 2026

The Cork BHAA J&J Innovative Medicine 5k was held in Little Island on Sun 8th Feb 2026 and attracted a field of 352 runners. This is the same race as the previous Janssen 5k as that company has changed its name to the parent company.

The numbers are down about 15% on last year and as the chart shows above, it's a case of the numbers returning to the 2024 levels. It's perhaps another sign that the numbers for the BHAA races have now levelled off as shown in this previous post.

Cork BHAA Calendar for 2026...

This is what the calendar for the 2026 Cork BHAA races looks like with 19-races in total. Here are some of the key points...

a) The ESB Cross Country race is usually held in early January in Beaumont Park. It had to be postponed this year ironically due to ESB groundworks in the park. We'll have to see if that one appears later on in the year.

b) The one new race this year is the EZ Living one in August. Again, that one will need to be confirmed.

c) If both races above go ahead then there will be a total of 19 races for the year, one up on last year.

As with any race calendar, the dates are provisional for now and might change.

If there are any changes, I'll update the race calendar.

Top Cork BHAA races in 2025

The chart above shows the number of finishers for each of the Cork BHAA races in 2025. The John Buckley Sports 5k was the top Cork BHAA race for the year, up about 18% on 2024.

The PwC 5k put in another strong showing to take the second spot while the Gas Networks Ireland 5k finished in third. The races tail away after that and the only one that was particularly low was the ESB cross country race.

Stats... Let's have a look to see what the trends are. First off, let's compare the races that were common to both 2024 and 2025...

There were 17 races which were common to both years. The numbers for eight of them were up, eight were down and one stayed the same. This stat alone already suggests that there was no growth in 2025.

Let's look at the average number of finishers per Cork BHAA race since 2015 and we get this chart...

Note the chart starts at 300

After 2015, the average number dropped for three years before recovering in 2019. Post pandemic, the 2022 numbers were well down like a lot of other races. It then showed strong growth in 2023 and 2024 to recover. 2025 was down a bit on 2024, not a huge amount but a drop all the same.

Looking ahead... It seems like the post pandemic recovery is well and truly over and it seems likely that the numbers for 2026 will be about the same again if not a little reduced.

The big advantage that the BHAA have is that their races are only €5 for registered runners and €10 for non-reg. Every year that goes by, the BHAA races look like better value when compared to club races where the entry fees are gradually creeping upwards.

A look at the numbers for the Cork BHAA summer road races - 2025

The Cork BHAA hold some of the most popular road races in Cork and they recently had their last summer evening road race for 2025. I had a look at the numbers to see if there are any trends.

The following 10 races were held in both 2024 and 2025...  John Buckley Sports 5k, PwC 5k, Gas Networks Ireland 5k, Musgrave 5k, Stryker 4m, Sterling 5k, Apple Employees 5k, Pfizers 6m, DePuy Synthes 4m, ThermoFisher 4m.

If we were to examine one race on its own then it might be skewed by say a wet evening one year and a dry evening the following year. By looking at a pool of races, factors like the weather tend to cancel out and we can see what the real trend might be like.

As the graphic above shows, the numbers were up for five of the Cork BHAA evening races in 2025 and were down for five compared to 2024.

The average number of finishers for the ten races above was 560 which is impressive in itself and that was up just 1.5% on 2024.

Post Pandemic... If we look at back at the summer races for the 2022 to 2025, there are 7 races which were held every year. For example, the Apple race didn't start until 2024.

After the pandemic, there was a big drop in race numbers and there was strong growth afterwards.

You can see from the chart above, the average number for the selected 7 races moves upwards and then beginning to flatten out in 2025.

The growth went from 22% in 2024 to 4% in 2025.

And the future?... If we use the chart as a guide then it certainly suggests that the Cork BHAA numbers will level off in 2026 and there will be no growth .

The club races in Cork have followed in a similar fashion and I've noticed this year that some of the road races in north Cork have shown no growth or have even dropped.

As I've outlined in a previous post, there does seem to be general increase in the entry fees for club races and it remains to be seen if this is going to become a factor in the race numbers going forward.

At the end of the year, I'll have a look at the BHAA numbers for the year as a whole.
