Road Closures for the 2018 Cork City Marathon...
From the organisers...Full list of road closures and travel advice for Sunday 3rd June 2017
Travel Advice: There will be major traffic restrictions throughout the city on race day but the general advice is to use the city’s Ring and Link roads when possible. You can drive into the city centre, but allow plenty of time to get to your start line. Contra-flows will operate in the Jack Lynch Tunnel, on the South Ring Road to Mahon and on the South City Link.
The Park & Ride service from the Black Ash centre, on the South City Link (N27), into the city centre will operate every 10 minutes from 07.30 to 19.15. The service costs €5 for the day. Participants and spectators are urged to use this facility and leave your car outside the city centre. The bus will bring you into the centre, a minute’s walk from the City Hall.
ROAD RE-OPENING SCHEDULE (times are approximate)
Please note that the Marathon (8.30am) and Half Marathon (10.15am) start times are a half hour earlier than in previous years.
Road closures begin at 5.30am on St Patrick’s Street and adjoining streets. All other closures are put in place from 7.30am.

New 5k parkrun proposed for the north side of Cork City...
Moves are now underway to try and establish a new 5km parkrun in the Glen in the north side of Cork City. The City Council have expressed an interest in supporting it and volunteers are now being sought.
If you would like to be part of a core group that will help get this weekly 5km parkrun up and running and then supporting it on n ongoing basis then send an email to John Kissane... john DOT kissane AT parkrun DOT com
What usually happens is that a rota is set up and people help out on a regular basis. It's not like you'll be committing yourself to be there every Saturday morning. Some weeks you might run, some weeks you'll volunteer.
No start date has been set but it will be on Saturdays at 9:30am just like all the rest.
If you have any questions or are interested then let John Kissane know.

Route changes for the 2018 Cork City Half-Marathon
The 2018 route for the Cork City Half-Marathon is pretty much the same as last year except for the start.
In 2017, the race started on Monahan Road and took in a loop beyond the Atlantic Pond. This year, it starts on Albert Road and takes in a loop around Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
The first 3 mile are shown below...
As you can see, the start on Albert Road is reasonably close to the City Hall. The straight section for the first mile on the Monahan Road will allow the field to thin out nicely and avoid the fiasco in 2016 when the runners went the wrong way.
There's a loop in around Pairc Ui Chaoimh and a small climb out of it and up onto the Marina. From there, it joins the marathon course at about 1.5 miles.

Athletics Ireland membership fees increase by €3
At the recent Athletics Ireland congress, a motion to increase the membership fee by €3 was passed with the intention that the new funds would be ring fenced for coaching. With just over 60,000 members (approx 36k juvenile & 24k adults), this should raise in the region of €180,000.
How exactly this funding is used remains to be seen but it is likely to be targeted towards specialist and high end coaching where it is likely to have the greatest impact.
The current Athletics Ireland membership fee of €12 for juveniles and €17 for adults has been in place since 2010. In 2019, this will increase by €3 to €15 and €20 respectively.
In his report to the congress, the financial officer noted that the membership fee may need to increase again to fund Athletic Ireland activities.
If you are a member of an Athletics Ireland affiliated club then this may well impact on you. It's very unlikely that most clubs will just increase their membership fees by €3 so the choice will probably be for the clubs to absorb the €3 increase per member or raise their membership fee by something like €5.

Ironman comes to Cork in June 2019
It was recently announced that a full Ironman Triathlon will be held in Youghal, Co.Cork on the 23rd of June 2019. Even though I don't have any interest in triathlons, I still know this is a big deal! :o)
The event will consist of a 3.8km swim, a two lap 180km cycle and a full marathon run of 42.2kms.
The marathon is described as a "flat four-lap run course through the centre of the historic town of Youghal, taking in Youghal Harbour and the famous Clock Gate Tower. Athletes will run under the arch of the Clock Gate Tower in the centre of town during each lap before finally running under the finishing arch in Market Square."
Priority entries open 24 May, while general registration opens on 5 June 2018. For more information go to www.ironman.com/ireland
I presume there will be huge interest in this event and should be a big tourist boost for the East Cork town.

*******
This is the third year of this 4 mile race and it's organised by Killeagh Community Healthy Clubs Project in association with Youghal AC. It will be held this year on Thursday the 24th of May 2018 at 8pm.

Study shows children running one-mile a day improves their lives
Back in 2015, I had a post up about how a primary school in Scotland had introduced an exercise routine for their pupils where they ran/walked roughly a mile each day. The concept was soon copied by other schools in the UK.
A recent study has now shown that children who follow the daily exercise routine not only get leaner but also establish daily habits.
Naomi Brooks, a senior lecturer in sport at the University of Stirling said... “Children often learn about healthy eating and the benefits of physical activity at school, but the kids who are doing the Daily Mile aren’t just learning it in their minds; they are learning: ‘This is something I do every day, as part of my day, and this is how it makes me feel..’”
There are also other long-term consequences such as higher bone density which can be a health factor throughout their life.
According to an article in the Guardian.... "Late childhood and early adolescence are critical times for laying down bone, which reaches its peak density in our 20s, declining thereafter. The higher your bone density during youth, the lower your risk of fractures and osteoporosis in later life. The idea is that we try to put as much bone as possible ‘in the bank’ as youngsters. The mechanical stimulation of our body weight going through our bones, muscles and tendons when we jump up and down, stimulates our bone cells to grow and lay down new bone.”

Notice...Cork BHAA John Buckley Sports 5k road race - Tues 22nd May 2018
The big race in Cork City this week is of course the Cork BHAA John Buckley Sports 5k on Tuesday. In contrast to the miserable wet weather on Monday, the forecast for today is for a nice sunny evening.
Update :
a) Online entries closing Tuesday lunchtime. ( raffle confined to online entries for Nike Pegasus)
b) Entries taken on the night up to 7.30 at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
c) Parking: plenty parking in Pairc Ui Chaoimh Stadium and surrounding areas.
d) No parking on Monaghan road side of Stadium - Residential Area
****
The annual John Buckley Sports 5k road race is one of the most popular races in Cork City and always attracts a large crowd. Organised in conjunction with the Cork BHAA, this race is suitable for all types of runner...from the serious to the more casual runner. The entry fee is only €5 for Cork BHAA registered runners or €10 for non-reg runners.
Located near the Pairc Ui Chaoimh stadium, this is a flat and fast 5k course. The big change this year is that registration is in the newly refurbished Pairc Ui Chaoimh stadium... the first road race to have its HQ there! There is also plenty of parking in the area.
20% Discount Vouchers......As per last year, John Buckley Sports will be giving out 20% discount to all finishers in the race. Just hang on to your race number and present it in the shop to avail of the 20% discount. It will apply to any purchases in their shop which is across from the Opera House in the heart of Cork City. Needless to say, the amount you save with the discount may well exceed the race entry so they are well worth getting. Note that the discount is not restricted to just one item. When you are using it, you can buy several products at the one time and get 20% off the lot. There is also no expiry date on the race number discount so you can use it anytime.
Chip Timing........For the last four years, they have been using chip timing at this race and it has been very successful. In previous years, there have been problems with too many runners finishing at the same time filling up the finishing chutes. With the introduction of chip timing, that problem has now been eliminated. All you need to do on the night is to cross the finish line....no queues.
Entries.....€5 for registered BHAA runners and €10 for non-reg. You can enter on the night OR you can enter beforehand if you want to avoid the queues. Your choices are to enter online by going to the John Buckley Sports website or you can call into the shop which is directly across from the Opera House in Cork City.
Pre-enter online for the John Buckley Sports 5k and you'll automatically be entered into a raffle to win a pair of Nike Pegasus runners.
In addition to the chip timing, there will be the usual post race refreshments back at Pairc Ui Chaoimh afterwards.
Preview.....A full preview of the course with photos can be seen HERE

Opening for Tramore Valley Park pushed back to Autumn 2018
Back in November of 2017, I had a post up about how the new Tramore Valley Park in Cork City was supposed to open before the Summer of 2018.
Officials in City Hall now say that the new date is 'August or September 2018'.
The former city dump was redeveloped as part of a €40 million project but has remained closed. Funding for staff has been secured for 2018 and additional works which include 'additional car parking, realignment of the main access road from the South City Link, the creation of internal roundabout and segregation of the civic amenity activities from park activities’ need to be completed.
If you've been following the saga of the Tramore Valley Park then you'll know that it has been opening 'next year' every year for the last few years. It wouldn't be any great suprise if the 'Autumn 2018' date slipped out into 2019.
Once it does open, it remains to be seen if the 'additional car parking' is enough to allow the resumption of the weekly 5k parkrun there.
