Results & Photos of the Carrigaline 5-mile road race - Sun 19th Feb 2023

Additional course bonus of €250 for Lizzie Lee for breaking 28-mins

The annual Carrigaline 5-mile road race was held on Sunday the 19th of February 2023 with 326 runners crossing the finish line, that's up 17% on the 278 last year.

The weather conditions this year were pretty much ideal whereas last year was damp so an increase in numbers might be expected. The key point here though is that the additional €2 from the new Athletics Ireland 'One-Day Licence' doesn't seem to have had much of an impact on the numbers in this race.

Notice...Carrigaline 5 mile road race - Sun 18th February 2018

The big race next weekend is the 5 mile road race organised by Eagle AC in Carrigaline on Sunday, the 18th of February 2018 at 11am.

Please note that there is a change of route this year. The road north from Coolmore Cross is closed due to ongoing works.

The new course is much the same as the old one except that the start and finish point will have to be moved to account for the diversion around the road works. The start is pretty much the same distance from the race HQ while the finish line will be 0.8 of a mile away.

The new course has been accurately measured by Kevin Cummins of the Cork BHAA so it's an accurate 5 miles.

Number of sub 3 hour finishers from Cork clubs in the Dublin Marathon

Following on from the Dublin Marathon, I had a closer look at the results of club runners from Cork. In particular, I had a look at the number of sub 3 hour finishers and the result was different from what I expected.

I thought the number of sub 3 hour finishers might be spread out across the various clubs but they're not. I did a comparison with 2016 and 2017 and the results are shown below...

As you can see, Eagle AC and St.Finbarr's AC have the highest number of sub 3 hour finishers. In 2015, the two clubs accounted for 50% of all the sub 3 hour club finishers from Cork. In 2016, that went up to 68% and this year, it's 74%.

What's really suprising are the low number of sub 3 hour finishers from other clubs.

In terms of total numbers of Cork club runners going sub 3 hours, there were 20 in 2015, 25 in 2016 and 27 in 2017.

Guest article by John Walshe...EAGLE ATHLETE WINS BRITISH MASTERS TITLE

EAGLE ATHLETE WINS BRITISH MASTERS TITLE... By John Walshe

Last Sunday week Richard Piotrowski, who now lives near Macroom and runs with the Eagle club in Cork, won the M70 title at the British Masters 10km road championships which took place at Gravesend in Kent.

A regular winner in the M65 (and M60) category on the Cork running scene over the past few years, Richard recently moved up to the M70 grade and his 43:08 over a difficult course and in warm conditions in Gravesend gave him the gold medal.

The report in last week’s edition of Athletics Weekly stated: “Back in the early 1970s Dick Piotrowski was one of the Reading AC senior team taking major team medals on road and country and here was an M70 victor in 43:08, half a minute clear of Peter Giles.”

That report was written by regular AW contributor Martin Duff, a team-mate of Richard on those Reading teams. Piotrowski also ran with the famous Belgrave Harriers and as well was an accomplished performer on the track, especially in the 3000m steeplechase.

As the accompanying result sheet shows (see below), the late 1960s/early 1970s was a golden age in distance running. The race in question – the Bracknell ‘5’ – was just an ordinary club event held in August each year. Although only 108 runners took part, as can be seen the first 12 broke 25 minutes with 82 of the 108 under the half-hour.

Richard finished sixth on that occasion in 24:27 and three seconds behind him was John Bryant, a newspaper editor who would go on many years later to write the story of the London Marathon titled ‘The History of the Greatest Race On Earth’.

In 12th position, and the last under 25 minutes, came Mick Woods of Aldershot, Farnham & District. A former Irish international marathoner, Woods is better known today as the coach to a host of British internationals such as Olympian Steph Twell, European cross-country champion Emelia Górecka, and Jonny Hay, one of the top British hopes in next Sunday’s London Marathon.

The Athletics Weekly edition of April 3rd, 1971, has a report and picture of the Reading AC team after winning the Crawley eight-stage 36 miles road relay. Running the anchor leg of just short of three miles that day was Richard (Dick) Piotrowski who brought his team home to victory with the fastest stage time of 14:51.

To make the pages of that historic and august publication exactly 46 years later with another winning performance is quite an achievement – and there’s no doubt we’ll be seeing the name of Richard Piotrowski appear with frequency on both Irish and British results over the coming months.

Reminder...Carrigaline 5 mile road race - Sun 21st Feb 2016

One of the other big races this weekend in Cork is of course the Carrigaline 5 mile road race on Sunday, 21st of Feb at 11am. Located just to the south of Cork City, it should be within easy reach for a lot of people. Coming just 2 weeks before the Ballycotton '10' on the 6th of March, it is ideally placed to test your fitness level to see what it's like. The race is organised by Eagle AC.

The town of Carrigaline is only five miles south of the South Ring Road.

Coming just 2 weeks before the Ballycotton 10, it is also an ideal test if you know what kind of pace you should run the 10 miles in. To get your best 10 mile time, you should run at a steady even pace or close to it. Run too fast in the first half and your second half will be much slower. Your fitness will change very little in 3 weeks so whatever time you get in Carrigaline on Sunday should give a good idea of your 10 mile form...assuming you have done the training to run 10 miles ;o)

To estimate your 10 mile time from your 5 mile result, have a look at this chart HERE.

Entries......The entry fee for 2016 is €10. Two Euro of this will be donated to local charities. It also includes a 20% off voucher for running items  in the Edge Sports Shop.

You can enter on the day in the local community hall in Carrigaline between 9:30am and 10:40am. There will also be a special entry desk for those who pre-enter and want to avoid the queues on the day.

Pre-Entry...You can pre-enter here until Thursday night...
http://www.active.com/cork-cork/running/eagle-ac-tommy-ryan-memorial-carrigaline-5-2016

Anyone who pre-enters gets put into a draw for a €30 One4All voucher.

Changing and showers for ladies upstairs, changing only for gents in main hall.

Race Sponsor......One of the main sponsors for the race is The Edge Sports Shop. They will be giving out 20% discount vouchers for running gear and nutrition products to all race entrants. Obviously the amount saved at the time of purchase may well exceed the cost of the race entry so it makes sense to get your hands on one. For example, if you spend €50 with the discount voucher, you save €10...the race entry fee.

From the sponsor.....The Edge Sports shop Specialises in Running, Cycling, Swimming and Triathlon. All sales staff participate in at least one but generally two or more of the sports and are able to give excellent advise to customers. The Superstore boasts a large Running Department and Swimming Department on the 1st floor; with stacks of bikes, clothing, accessories and electronics on the ground floor. Video Running Gait Analysis is available on demand at both shops to help customers select the best shoe for their running needs.

They have two shops in Cork City. One in Parnell Place in the city centre and a larger superstore out by the Kinsale Road Roundabout.

A total of 379 runners turned out for this years Carrigaline 5 mile road race. Organised by Eagle AC, this was up 24% on the numbers in 2014.

In the mens race, Alan O'Shea of Bantry AC was the clear winner while in the womens race, it was a different affair. With 50 metres to go, Laoise Ní Thuama was the clear leader but Helen Leonard of Leevale AC put in a big kick to catch her. Both crossed the line together but running at different speed so it was impossible to know for sure who finished first. As a result, a tied finish was declared.

Laoise Ni Thuama was a former juvenile athlete with Leevale and has spent the last six years in Australia. Last May, she won the Australian version of the Wings for Life World Run. For her prize, she’s won a trip this this year’s Cape Town Wings for Life event.
