Guest Post: Diary entry 27th Aug 2022 ...by Pat Walsh

 ** Diary entry 27th Aug 2022 **

“Na, na, na, na, na, Na, na, na, na, na
Life is a rollercoaster, Just gotta ride it “

Well you might ask why I’m quoting Ronan Keating lyrics..

Few possible reasons.!

I’m losing it, (No.. maybe)

Secret Westlife fan (No.. No)

I ran the Copper Coast Crawl today in Waterford and it was like running on a roller-coaster. (Correct)

As I get older it is important to document my days so I can look back on them. Today is one to view through rosy coloured glasses in years to come. I’m getting back my creative writing streak again.

Left Cork early this morning to journey to the Run in beautiful Annestown, Co Waterford and it was a dream morning to be making the trip. Crossing Youghal bridge to go from Cork to LaLaLand (Waterford), the land of floury Blaas and loose porter, we ventured into the unknown.

No better or nicer bunch of people exist on this Island. They do welcomes, greetings and groundings all in one simple move…“Great to see you again you big old eeejit” is followed by a hug, and a genuine appreciation of your visit.

This is not a race, but a charity run and a joy to take part. 7ml, 10ml, and half marathon option. I’m from Cork so I go half, (they were right, BIG eejit).

Eoghan Keating 9th annual Copper Coast Crawl Saturday 27th August 2022.Delighted to be supporting Juniors for Juniors once again this year'

Running not racing, testing but satisfying, madness but we need madness.

Off we went from Annestown and headed up some beautiful trails and roads, climbing all the way. One superb trick that I have never seen repeated anywhere.

How do you recover at mile 2 from the first bad hill?

Guest Post: The Mental Game ...by Pat Walsh

 ** The Mental Game **

I wrote recently of the power of the mind and what a help OR hinderance it can be. A lot of running is done between our 2 ears, so what can we do to help ourselves?

Hopefully this might help those hitting high mileage for Autumn Marathons.

BE POSITIVE
First and foremost rule BE POSITIVE. That above anything else is the key to success.
Yes you can do it. Get the brain and all thoughts flowing that you will achieve what you are trying to do.

YES WE CAN
Whether this is a new Longest run, a first 5Km, a Marathon, it is important to have the mind-set focused on getting there and finishing it.
You must be realistic and not trying to go too far or too fast but just setting out to do what you are attempting.
Worry and doubt only sap the energy from the body. If you have nervous tension, then your Heart rate will be higher before you ever start and that can take from the energy required to complete a run.

PLAN / FOCUS
Plan what you are doing. Whether it is the pace of a race, or water stops along a training run, don’t leave things to chance. Hit your targets per mile or collect your water at various points and just tick it off in the head that you are on track with the plan. Focus on each part of the run and see yourself striding home in the last mile.

PRESSURE
Pressure is for tyres. You are a runner and doing your best. No pressure, no apology. Your fellow runners, your family and your friends (even your Dog) will still love you 💞regardless of the outcome. Don’t put undue pressure on yourself. Don’t run with people who put pressure on you either.

REFOCUS
If a plan doesn’t come together, what do I do? Ask yourself why it didn’t work. Was it too fast? Was the day too hot? Did I add too many miles to my previous longest run? Was it just a bad week of rest and nutrition?

There can be many reasons for this but most important is to analyse, sort it out, resolve to learn from it and...

DRIVE ON
Fix the mistakes and do not repeat them. You are out there, doing your best. Won’t be many Olympic athletes reading this, only ordinary honest runners doing the best they can. We all make mistakes, tomorrow is a NEW DAY.

DOUBT
Do not give a voice to doubt, or talk down your ability or chances of succeeding. You are in the middle of a group of runners at mile 14 of a 16 mile run and your leg is a bit sore, you are feeling a bit hungry and you just want to be finished.
“My back is sore”
“My leg doesn’t feel right”
“I don’t think I will make it”.
Do you think you are the only one with this feeling?

NO....
Do not give in to a moan as this will spread, and soon all will be having the same doubts and misgivings. Lift yourself, try to chat and say how well we are doing. We are awesome.
Find a positive.
“We are past our previous Long run”
“Cuppa coffee in 2 miles”
“I can have a pint tonight I am so awesome”

THANKFUL
Be thankful every day you put on your runners and remember there are many others who would like to and can’t. Run for them, carry someone in your head and succeed for them.
Always, Always thank your running partners for their company. Those friends are priceless.

SMILE
Last one and 2nd most important. Smile, have fun, enjoy yourself. Choose to embrace life. We are having a go, we are trying, we are challenging ourselves and do you know what? We are pretty awesome. That is worth a smile.

Have a great weekend

Play in Cork City about Running a Marathon - THIS, THAT & THE OTHER

This play about running a marathon is coming up in Cork Arts Theatre on Carroll's Quay in Cork City from Tuesday 30th August – Saturday 3rd September 2022.

Here is the description....

THIS, THAT & THE OTHER

by Pádraig O’Connor

A play about two people running a marathon. We’re not sure where they are exactly, but they are about to run the race of their lives, today!

‘This’ is a runner. She knows what a marathon entails, but she’s trained and trained and feels ready to go. ‘That’ on the other hand, has not been training. He’d probably rather be anywhere else, but he’s here now and he does look great in running shorts, so he might as well just go for it.

This, That & The Other is a play about marathons, but it’s also a play about the hectic pace of modern life. Written as two overlapping monologues, This, That & The Other is an energetic, rhythmic, yet strangely familiar tale about the time we have and how we choose to spend it. It’s about why we run and what we might be running away from.

Tickets: €20, €15 concessions

Guest Post: John Buckley 10 mile ...by Pat Walsh

 ** John Buckley 10 mile **

Good to see the return of a classic Cork run. New HQ in the Marina Market and that was fantastic. Super venue. It was warm still at 5pm, but after all we have gone through who cares. Delighted to be there.

Met some old friends (clarification needed) they are not old, but friends of a long standing nature. 10 miles + a bit …(not sure what happened there 10.17 for a 10ml) and 100 hugs.

Nice to be back on the old Railway Line route that has reopened as a Greenway and the surface is fantastic for running.

Anyone not from Cork please skip this paragraph..! When you run along the Banks of my own lovely Lee and the route goes around Pairc Ui Caoimh then my heart is as light as any runner. #Nirvana

Enough of all that. Great to be running races, great to meet everyone again, great to put all the last few years behind us. If you have not discovered the magic yet all I can say is don’t postpone it for too long. It isn’t easy to race again but it is rewarding.

The pain of pushing, the pain of testing your body, the joy of finishing, the joy of knowing you can still do it, the smiles, the crack, the laughs, the comments, the supporters, the grub afterwards, the garmin analysis, the running pics online. Now ask yourself, when is my next race.

Litter issues after the 2022 Cork City 10-Miler

Following the Cork City 10-Miler last Saturday, someone sent on the following message on Sunday with the photos above...

"Any chance you guys can clear up the mess you've left on the old railway line please there are bottles of water strewn everywhere and it's an absolute disgrace the way participants and organisers have left the place."

All race organisers should have a 'Leave No Trace' policy and waste management should be part of the race process. If water bottles are handed out then all discarded bottles and gels should be picked up straight away after the race has finished.

If enough local residents and members of the public complain to the Cork City Council about post race littering then the easiest solution is for the Council to ban all races on Greenways and walkways. Something to consider.

Results & Photos of the Cork City 10-miler - Sat 20th Aug 2022

First 3-women in the 2022 Cork City 10-miler (L-R) Fiona Santry (3rd), Shona Heaslip (1st) & Niamh Moore (2nd)

This years Cork City 10-miler was held on Saturday the 10th of August 2022 with 1054 runners crossing the finish line. This is almost identical to the 1045 in the last edition in 2019 which is a good showing most races are showing negative growth since the pandemic.

Someone did send me a message to say that they measured the course long at 10.12 miles but I suspect the tree coverage over the railway cutting in Blackrock might lead to some poor GPS coverage and inaccurate readings.

(Update: Someone said in the comments that the first mile was too long)

IRONMAN Cork - Sat 13th & Sun 14th Aug 2022

The big sporting event in Cork this weekend is the IRONMAN event in Youghal. On the Saturday, there is the 70.3 event with the full IRONMAN on Sunday the 14th.

You can find the full schedule HERE

I cycled the 90km route last Wednesday and took some photos... shown below - just click on them to see them in more detail.

There was certainly a buzz about the place in Youghal with lots of signs and bunting outside peoples houses along the route. The section from Youghal to Ballymacoda and down the coast to Cloyne and East Ferry is a stunning part of the course and very scenic.

When I was going through Youghal, there was even a pod of dolphins swimming around where the swim will take place and it's a lovely spot.

The IRONMAN is Youghal hasn't had a great start with poor weather pre-covid in 2019 and then covid cancellations of course in 2020. The weather for this weekend will be superb and it should be a great event for spectators and contestants alike.

Guest Post: Diary Entry 6th Aug 2022 ...by Pat Walsh

Diary entry 6/8/2022

Rise early for our Saturday Morning run.

Planned start for 7.30am, alarm for 6.15 to allow for some breakfast and headspace, but you are staring at the ceiling and it is still only 4.45am. Still not bright, but not dark, the birds are starting to sing and you are thinking while I love them, will I have to listen to this for the next hour and a half? That is why aftershoks earbuds were invented and so a little music.

Breakfast of champions, Bran Flakes, Tea and a slice of toast with jam. Wow we are living like Kings these days but the carbs will be needed later to fuel the engine. Get the gear on, is it vest or t-shirt weather? Big decision. Ahh we need the vitamin D and the day is good so opt for the vest. Could be a long winter yet. Bit of sun lotion needed to be safe.

Mobilise, stretch and it is still only 6.50 so what do we do.

Bit of Katy Perry to start movement, she is the buzz.

Plants need watering and dishwasher needs emptying and that is as good a warm up as anyone needs. The peace at this time of the day is beautiful.

Arrive to meet the buddies in the car park…Hmmm

Olympic scoring charts are needed here.. on a scale of 1 to 10
Strength of smile, delighted to meet the crew  = 9.5
Actual conviction of how happy we are  = 3.5
Bright colour gear to keep us safe = 8.5
Determination of resolve = 8.0

Good to go, Garmin watch primed and ready for action, grand day for it, glad I brought the sunglasses.

Results of the District Health & Leisure 5k in Tramore Valley Park - Sun 7th Aug 2022

This 5k race in Tramore Valley Park in Cork City was held on Sunday the 7th of August 2022 and attracted a field of just 56 runners which is very poor. A 5k race in Cork City would be expected to get at least 100 finishers and this one was way down.

Why the poor numbers? This 5k would have been planned months ago but in the meantime, the 5k parkrun in Tramore Valley Park has restarted in July. The parkrun uses the exact same course as the race and its free. The race on the other hand cost €12 to enter.

Some might argue that a 5k race isn't the same as a 5k parkrun as the race has prizes. But for people that won't be in the prizes, the choice is a free timed 5k for free on Saturday morning with the parkrun OR €12 for a timed 5k on the exact same course on Sunday morning.

The prize fund for the top 3 men & women was €700 and the 56 entries would just about have paid for that. Add in the chip timing and all the other costs associated with putting on a race and the finances are well into the red.

Chip Timing... It seems crazy to have the expense of chip timing for just 56 runners. With such low numbers, you could just use a watch and have someone write down the times.

Top 3 men & women...

4426 1 Damian Kenneally Eagle A.C. M 16:37
4925 2 Andrew Hobbs Leevale AC M 16:46
4420 3 Ken Ince Eagle A.C. M 16:58

Guest Post: Get Motivated to Run (again…) ...by Pat Walsh

  ** Get Motivated to Run (again…) **

Many have lost their way the last 2 years and finding it difficult to resume. I hope this helps the many who have asked me for advise. If you are reading this and feel it is you, then trust me you are not alone. I’m meeting people every week expressing the same thing.

Find yourself again and find your way back to running. We lost friends, social groups, running routes and races for so long that many simply packed it in. Many are afraid to race, don’t want to race and that is understandable.

Many have lost the social outlet, or the time they used to run has been taken up with something else. Many have lost fitness and don’t know how to start again or dread the thought of it.

Few thoughts..

Why are you doing this and remind yourself of this on regular basis.

If you don't know why you are doing it, you are likely to give up too soon. You may want to lose weight, get healthy, fresh air, fight depression, get some head-space. Get out of the house and be sociable. Go back to where you once were. Be an example to your children.

No matter what the reason is, make sure you know why you want to run. Believe in yourself and just get out there again.

🎙 You could beat the world, you could beat the war
You could talk to God, go banging on his door
You can throw your hands up, you can beat the clock
You can move a mountain, you can break rocks 🎙

* Set a Goal
It is much easier to stay motivated if you have a goal. Sign up for a race. If you are running already set a target finishing time. It can be well behind where you were 3 years ago but no-one cares. It is you today in the present moment and that is who you are. Old glories are fine and can be used as a mark of your potential once your running career resumes in a proper fashion.
Don't get obsessed with a time and lose the love of the run and maybe those around you. You might need them in the future.
If you are training for a Marathon remind yourself why you are really doing it before the hard miles kick in.

* Get a buddy
Everything is easier and much more fun when you have a group to share it with. Running is a great way of making new friends. Schedule runs and you'll run out of excuses not to run when someone asks, "Are we running today?"

* Follow a Training Plan
Many beginners or those returning to running make the same mistake. They just put on their shoes and try to run for as long as they can. In five minutes or less, they run out of breath, switch to walking and swear not to do it again. Follow a plan
Same applies to experienced runners who have a goal. Get a plan, make a plan and stick to it

* Keep a diary
Write everything down—record not only time and distance but also your feelings and emotions. It does help to look back and see how much you have progressed.

* Educate Yourself
Try to learn as much as you can about running. Read websites and blogs, participate in forums. It will keep you interested, give you useful information, and make you feel part of the running community. Check out books and movies about runners. They can be fun motivational tools. If you are finding it hard trust me someone will have documented a similar struggle somewhere. We are runners, we moan…!

* Reward Yourself
Training might be tough at times but it doesn't mean hard work leaves no room for a little treat. Celebrate your successes in training and racing. This doesn't necessarily mean throwing a pizza party or indulging in sweets and fast food. Buy something that will help you with your new hobby: a new running shirt, a pair of new shoes, a water bottle or a runner's watch.

* Enjoy It
We all prefer to do things we enjoy. If you like something, you keep doing it. Every time you run, you learn something new about yourself, and this is priceless.

* Smile
It may sound silly, but it works. Smile when you run—it tells your brain you are happy, and you should be. Think about all those people who would love to do what you are doing. As your body gets stronger, fitter and healthier, your life will get better. Isn't that reason enough to smile?

🎙 You can go the distance, you can run the mile
You can walk straight through hell with a smile.
🎙

Maybe this is all a bit too straight for some.. but.. no one can change this only yourself.

Have a nice weekend..
