The joys of running a marathon dressed as Big Ben

UK elite runner Hayley Carruthers crawls over finish line for 2h 33m time in London Marathon

One of the most memorable sights in the 2019 London Marathon was that of UK elite runner Hayley Carruthers crawling over the line to finish in a time of 2h 33m 59s.

The 26 year old who works in the NHS ran the first half of the race way too fast and had to give everything just to get to the finish line. It was also a three minute PB!

In a post race interview with BBC Radio 1, she said......"We started too fast and I got carried away with the excitement of being in the elite race and all the excitement of London really. We ran the first half far too quickly and it just ended up being a survival fest.

I started counting my steps and my head was gone, I think I lost sight in one eye. My legs felt like lead and I felt sick. It gradually got worse and worse.

To get to 20 miles and think I've still got another 10km to go - I genuinely didn't think I could finish.

It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I just couldn't lift my legs at all and I just couldn't move. It was just petrifying."

Results of the Ballintotis 4 mile road race - Wed 17th Apr 2019

There was a huge turn out of 1240 runners for this years Ballintotis 4 mile road race, a new record!

I had noticed that the race notice that I put up a few weeks back seemed to be getting a lot of hits but I certainly didn't expect the numbers on the night to be anywhere like 1200 plus.

Medals.... The organisers had purchased 1200 medals for all finishers as it was 10th anniversary of event. As more than 1200 showed up, some people did not get a medal.

The organisers would like to apologise to the people who did not get a medal but if they send their race number, name and address to johncashman100 AT gmail DOT com

The medal will be posted as soon as possible.  Circa: 3 weeks

Race... As for the race, it looks like a clean sweep for the East Cork AC men with them taking the top three places. Fiona Santry of East Cork AC also retained her title.

Cork runner Sinead Kane finishes 2nd in UK 24 hour race

Cork and Youghal native Sinead Kane ran an amazing 204.621 kms at the Crawley 24 hour track race in the UK at the weekend.  That's just over 127 miles!

With those performance, Sinead finish 2nd Female and 6th overall.

This is the International B Standard for Females (200Km) and to date, only 7 other Irish Female athletes have ever ran over 200Km.  This puts Sinead 7th on the list based on performance.

It may also possibly be the first time for a visually impaired athlete to achieve this standard.

Alex O’Shea (Cork) was also competing in this race and finished 22nd with a distance of 139.6 kms.

New Ballybrack Pedestrian Route in Douglas in Cork City

Update 16th April 2019 : Elected members of the Ballincollig-Carrigaline Municipal District gave their green light of support for the next extension of the Ballybrack pedestrian/cycling path at the April monthly meeting yesterday. The proposed extension now needs to go to full Council for final approval.

Managers report... http://www.marciadalton.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Past-8-Managers-Report_Ballybrack-Valley-Pedestrian-and-Cycle-Route-Phase-4.pdf

Over the last few years, there have been some major improvements to the walkway and park in the Ballybrack Valley area to the south of Douglas in Cork City.

I came across this planning notice recently which shows the next phase of the project which connect the existing Ballybrack walkway over to Maryborough Hill. Once this is complete, it will mean there are more route options for runners and walkers who want to get away from the busy roads.

Guest post : The Legend Jerry Forde takes on the Alexander the Great Marathon

Guest post from Claire O'Brien...*GOOD LUCK JERRY!* ... by Claire O'Brien

This weekend, the legend that is Jerry Forde is about to achieve a life-long ambition, and complete a marathon in Greece! Jerry will participate in the “Alexander the Great Marathon” in Thessaloniki. This will be his 445th marathon and Jerry will earn another marathon medal to add to his collection! 😊

It has taken months of meticulous planning to enable this to happen...with a few “bumps” along the way! The most recent being Jerry misplacing his passport!! Luckily, with a bit of help from Lord Mayor Mick Finn and also Simon Coveney, we were able to arrange an emergency one with hours to spare!!!! As we speak, Jerry is on a sight seeing tour around Greece, and is looking forward to being at the start line tomorrow! 💪🏻 For anyone that would like to tune in, it starts at 6am Irish time, and should be streamed live on this link. https://webtv.ert.gr/ert3-live/

Best of luck Jerry! You are a true inspiration! ☘️🏃‍♂️💪🏻
