Results of the Inch Festival 5k in Mount Uniacke... Fri 29th June 2018
A total of 92 runners turned out for this years Inch Festival 5k in Mount Uniake near Killagh. As can be seen from the chart above, there has been quite a drop in numbers since 2016.
It mirrors a number of other races recently that have shown drops as there seems to be a definite softening in race numbers. Any race that can maintain its numbers at the moment is doing well.

Supergirl Dolores & Team raise €4270 for CUH charity
Earlier this month, I had a post up about how local runner Dolores Duffy had set a new Guinness World record in the 2018 Cork City Marathon.
One of the aims of this record attempt was to raise funds for the CUH charity. Pictured above is Dolores with the relay team Excite which is composed of runners from CIT. Between all their efforts, a total of €4,270 has now been donated.

Looking at the numbers, it's interesting to look at the trend and see if the local free 5k parkrun on Saturday mornings has had any impact.
As can be seen from the chart below, the numbers are down 14% this year but they were down in 2016 as well before bouncing back. The local 5k parkrun started in June of 2016.
The Belle of Ballincollig 5k is in the same area and the numbers for that one are down about a third on the peak of 302 back in 2015. The BHAA races cost €5 for registered runners where as the Belle one was €10 I think.
Interesting to see how the two races differ.
Races coming up on Thurs 28th & Fri 29th June 2018

Notice…Bere Island Midsummer Run – Sat 14th July 2018
This is quite probably one of the most spectacular spots for a road race in Cork if not the country. Bere Island on a fine day is an amazing spot with the backdrop of Bantry Bay and the Beara Peninsula.
There are plenty of races that are cheaper to enter but none are in such a scenic location. If you are thinking of going then it would really worth considering making a day of it rather than just going for the race itself.
The races take place in Rerrin village at the eastern end of the island. There are two car and passenger ferries servicing the island...Bere Island Ferries and Murphy's Ferry.
You can pre-enter online HERE or on the day at the GAA grounds. The entry fee includes a dry fit top.
Full results with times will be available online afterwards.
Course Preview.....A full preview of the course with directions, maps and photos can be seen HERE.

GPs in the UK are encouraged to 'prescribe' parkruns to patients
In 2017, parkrun UK had a report that said that hundreds of healthcare practicioners were recommending the wide-ranging benefits of active lifestyles to health and well-being to their patients. A new initiative launched in collaboration with the Royal College of General Practitioners now aims to build on this by increasing awareness among more GPs and all practice staff of local parkruns.
It is hoped that the initiative could see thousands of patients being “prescribed” outdoor physical activity by their GP rather than medication. GP practices will be encouraged to develop closer links with their local parkrun to become certified “parkrun practices”, with healthcare practitioners signposting patients and carers to the events, particularly those who are the least active and have long-term health conditions.
Dr Simon Tobin, a GP from Southport, Merseyside, described the concept as a ...“win-win situation for my patients and the NHS. Almost every day I invite my patients to come to parkrun and I’ve had successes with people with anxiety, depression, diabetes and heart disease as well as those who want to improve their blood pressure or get fitter. My patients are healthier, happier and on fewer medications, and the NHS saves a fortune on unnecessary drugs and dealing with their side-effects.”
Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, chairwoman of the Royal College of GPs, said ... “Small, often simple, lifestyle changes can have a really positive impact on our health and well-being, so anything that encourages patients to live better and move more is a good thing. Parkrun is a diverse, fun and free way of getting our patients up and moving about, and empowering them to make basic lifestyle changes in the best interests of their long-term health and well-being.”

Results & Photos of the Ballincollig 5k parkrun... Sat 23rd June 2018
The 104th edition of the weekly 5k parkrun in Ballincollig Regional Park was held on Saturday the 23rd of June 2018. A total of 294 runners turned out in the sunny conditions for the 5k run which comes just one week after the 2nd anniversary.
As can be seen from the chart above, the numbers are still very healthy with a long term average of 265 runners per week. At the end of 2016, the average was 219. The average for 2017 was 243 so you can see that the numbers so far for 2018 are pushing that two year average upwards.

Runner in Canada detained for two weeks after crossing US border by accident
French student Cedella Roman aged 19 was out running on a beach in Canada recently and accidentally crossed into the United States. When she turned around to run back, she was apprehended by two U.S. Border Patrol officers.
As can be seen from the photo below, the border isn't marked on the beach.
Instead of being escorted back to the border, she was instead imprisoned for two weeks in a detention centre 125 miles from the border. When asked about the ordeal, the student said...“An officer stopped me and started telling me I had crossed the border illegally. I told him I hadn’t done it on purpose, and that I didn’t understand what was happening. I said to myself, well I may have crossed the border but they’ll probably only give me a fine, or they’ll tell me to go back to Canada or they’ll give me a warning.”

There is a story doing the rounds on the media today with headlines like... "Man jailed for using someone else's London marathon number (Guardian)".
During the 2018 London Marathon last April, a runner named Jake Halliday lost his race number after taking off his shirt before the finish line. A homeless man named Stanislaw Skupian later crossed the finish line with the number and posed for photos.
At the time, there was a lot of noise in the media about the photo and whether Skupian found or stole the number and the fact that he had tried to claim that he had run the race.
Fast forward to today and a magistrate has sentenced him to 16 weeks in jail. According to the media sources, Skupian had pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation and to three unrelated counts of theft. 13 weeks are for the fraud and three weeks are for the theft offences.
London marathon chief executive, Nick Bitel also said the episode could be seen to damage the reputation and integrity of the race, regarded by him as one of the best organised in the world.

Update on the 5k parkrun in the Glen Park in Cork City
Back at the end of May 2018, I had a post up about the proposed new weekly 5k parkrun in the Glen in Cork City.
So far, a small team of about 10-11 people have expressed an interest in helping to get it up and running.
Cork Local Sports Partnership have organised a meeting at the Glen Resource Centre at 6:30pm on Wednesday June 27th 2018.
If you want to help out or even to find out more about it then try to attend this meeting.
The contact for this new proposed parkrun is John Kissane and you can contact John at john DOT kissane AT parkrun DOT com

Over the years, I have put quite a number of guest posts by John Walshe of Ballycotton up on the blog. There is a lot amount of information in those posts and I had links to them on the articles page before.
I have now set up a new page for John's articles on the site so that they are easier to find.

National Marathon in Portlaoise in 1986
This short video clip below is of the BLE National Marathon in Portlaoise in 1986 and some Cork runners were mentioned in it. Race stewards weren't in fashion back then ;o)
John Walshe of Ballycotton sent on this short report of the event...
BLE NATIONAL MARATHON 1986
The BLE (Irish) marathon championship of 1986 took place on the Saturday afternoon of April 13 from Portlaoise. It followed a triangular course made up of Portlaoise, Mountrath and Abbeyleix. The line-up of around 90 runners was the smallest field to contest the national championship in 10 years.
The leaders up to halfway were Roy Dooney, Kingston Mills and defending champion John O’Toole from nearby Tullamore. O’Toole dropped out before 20 miles, leaving Dooney and Mills to battle it out for the title. Dooney had run the Hiroshima Marathon in Japan the previous year in 2:14:38 and was therefore the favourite. However, on the road home from Abbeyleix, Mills made his move and Dooney couldn’t respond.

Video on the new walkway in Ballybrack Woods, Douglas...
Cork County Council have upgraded and extended the walkway in Ballybrack Woods in Douglas recently and they made a fine job of it. Even though it's reasonably short, some runners might want to try it as part of a route.
If anyone is not sure of where Ballybrack Woods is then check out the map below.

Runner spotted on the M8 motorway in Cork!
This has been doing the rounds on social media today. Someone was spotted out running between cars on the M8 motorway near the Jack Lynch tunnel!
As cars queued at the traffic lights to head south, they were treated to some guy running down the middle of the M8 road. ....and he was wearing headphones! I don't know which is worse :o))
Seriously...whoever you are... there are nicer and safer places to go for a run.
