Guest Post: ‘I SUPPOSE YOU’VE NOT BEEN TO DROMCOLLOGHER?’ ...by John Walshe

The annual Dromcollogher 4-mile road race has a long history and it was held on Monday the 22nd of June 2026. The full results are shown below John Walshe's report.

‘I SUPPOSE YOU’VE NOT BEEN TO DROMCOLLOGHER?’ ... By John Walshe

The songs of Percy French (1854-1920) are still fondly remembered, especially such ditties as ‘Are You Right There, Michael’, ‘The Mountains of Mourne’ and ‘Phil The Fluther’s Ball’. Another of the Roscommon-born compositions celebrated the town of Dromcollogher, with one of the lines going ‘I Suppose You’ve Not Been To Dromcollogher?’

Well, for this writer its all of 48 years since his first ‘Been To Dromcollogher’, making the trip on that occasion in the company of Midleton club-mate Liam O’Brien. This was probably the first edition of the now long-standing road race, which over the years has attained a certain allure which somehow attracts one back year after year.

The previous day in 1978 Liam had won the first of his 11 national 3000m steeplechase titles and no doubt it was out of loyalty to Fr Liam Kelleher (who had moved from Midleton to Tullylease the previous autumn) that he traveled in support of this new event.

The race was founded by local shopkeeper Christy Brosnan, along with Joe Quaid of the North Cork club, which Fr Kelleher had founded. The course then was one complete lap with the finish in the main square making the distance around four-and-a-quarter miles. Now, it’s a measured four-miler.

Two things mark out this race as unique. One, it always takes place on a Monday evening, and secondly its part of an annual carnival which is one of the oldest in the country, having commenced back in the 1940s. Along with Liam O’Brien, over the years such well-known names such as John Lenihan, John Griffin, Desmond O’Connor and Lizzie Lee have graced these roads around Dromcollogher.

The race headquarters are now in the excellent Dromcollogher-Broadford GAA complex adjacent to the start. In a throwback to the past, there is no chip timing. Just the efficient Racemaster result system operated by Clare couple James and Sally Sexton. Entry fee was only €10 with a fine array of prizes presented in a variety of categories in the local hall afterwards.

Despite the 8pm start, the sun was still high in the sky on one of the warmest days of the year as the 100 or so runners lined up with the first mile straight out the Newcastle West road. The humid conditions certainly didn’t hinder winner Karl Fitzmaurice as he took command from the start, going on to cross the line in 19:56 which was not too far outside Sean Doyle’s course record of 19:38.

Winner Karl Fitzmaurice receiving the Christy Brosnan Memorial Cup from Dan Horan

A member of Shannon AC, Fitzmaurice is a former scholarship attendee at McNeese State University in Louisiana. He has a 10,000m best of 30:45.23 and last November notched up a significant victory when winning the Brooklyn Half-Marathon in a time of 70:59.

It was a similar name that dominated the women’s race as Carol Finn made it three wins in a row – and six victories in all – when coming home in sixth place overall with her time of 24:54.

Local man Eugene Noonan is now the main organiser, with help from West Limerick AC. Amongst those representing the club on the night were two great stalwarts of the sport, Mike MacDomhnaill – who won the race in 1985 - and Seamus Cawley.

Mike, along with his wife Carmel, has been the mainstay of athletics in the region for many years. Their daughter, Sorcha, was a member of the Irish team (along with Niamh Allen and Fiona Everard) that finished second at the recent European 10,000m Cup in Italy.

Seamus Cawley has also etched his place in running folklore as one of only nine runners to have completed every Dublin Marathon since the event commenced in 1980.

Percy French’s tribute and the long-running carnival and road race are two of the happiest occurrences associated with Dromcollogher. But there is also sadly a heartbreaking story which will be commemorated this coming September, 100 years after its tragic occurrence.

On September 5th, 1926, 48 people – many of them children - died when a candle ignited a highly flammable nitrate film in an upstairs cinema in the town. It wiped out a tenth of Dromcollogher's population and remains one of the deadliest fires in Irish history.

The 48 lives lost that night constituted the worst single disaster in the new Irish state until the fire at Whiddy Island in Bantry in 1979, in which 50 people died. Two years later, 48 people also perished in the Stardust tragedy in Dublin.

A national commemorative postage stamp will be issued in September, featuring an image of a funeral procession through Dromcollogher as part of the commemorations. The full story of that ill-fated night can be currently seen on the Echo Live website – https://www.echolive.ie/nostalgia/arid-41865438.html - written by John Dolan.

Guest Post: IRISH 10-MILE RANKINGS - END 2025 ...by John Walshe

IRISH 10-MILE RANKINGS 2025

The following is the yearly ranking list over the popular 10-mile distance for all men (under 55:00) and women (under 65:00) for 2025.

This list shows the time (gun), name/club/category, the race and finishing position, along with the date. Where an athlete appears more than once, just the surname is used after the initial listing.

After the 2024 decline in standards at the top end, the same cannot be said of last year. The season got off to a flying start at Dungarvan where Fearghal Curtin (47:42) and Niamh Allen (52:51) set two hugely impressive course records.

Although Curtin would go on to set Irish bests at both the half and full marathon, it was Peter Lynch from Kilkenny who got his name in the record books for 10 miles with his 45:59 at the Cherry Blossom race in Washington

However, Allen’s time – the second fastest by an Irishwoman since Sonia O’Sullivan’s 51:00 at the Great South Run in 2002 – prevailed throughout the year.

The numbers of performances for women under 60:00 was 21, one more than 2024. The total to make the cut-off standard of 65:00 was 102, slightly les than 2023 (106) and 2022 (117).

Amongst the men, nine performances (same as 2023) were achieved inside 50 minutes compared to just two in 2024.

The total number of performances for men under the 55:00 cut-off saw an increase to 136, well up on 99 from 2024 but still short of the 147 from 2023.

Dungarvan was undoubtedly the highest standard race over the distance for men with 31 finishing under 55:00 while Trim, with 18 under 65:00 – one more than 2023 - was the top race for the women.

As usual, any additions or corrections are welcome and can be made on the comments section wherever this list appears.

Guest Post: Orla Drumm

ORLA DRUMM

A regular prize-winner on the Cork BHAA circuit this summer has been Orla Drumm, representing the HSE. After a number of top finishes, Orla made it to the number one spot last Tuesday night at the Carey Tools 5km when winning in a time of 18:15.

Many may not be aware that over a decade ago the Limerick native was one of the country’s leading middle-distance performers. At the Athletics Ireland national senior championships in 2012 she won the 1500m, adding to the 800m title she had achieved back in 2007.

She also has three national indoor titles to her credit - over 1500m (2006 and 2012) and 3000m (2007). Her best time for the 1500m of 4:09.95 still ranks her 17th on the Irish all-time outdoor list. That was achieved in May 2012, the same year she represented Ireland at the European Championships in Helsinki.

As can be seen from the picture, Orla also had the honour that summer of appearing on the cover of Irish Runner magazine advertising a three-page feature on her titled ‘Doctor On The Run’.

Guest Post: IRISH 10-MILE RANKINGS - End July 2025 ...by John Walshe

IRISH 10-MILE RANKINGS - End July 2025

What follows is a ranking list over the popular 10-mile distance for all men (under 55:00) and women (under 65:00) for the six months from February to July 2025.

The list shows the time (gun), name/club/category, the race and finishing position, along with the date. Where an athlete appears more than once, just the surname is used after the initial listing.

At the end of 2024 we mentioned the decline in standards compared to previous years - but what a difference a few months make.

In early April a new Irish record of 45:59 was established by Peter Lynch from Kilkenny at the Cherry Blosson race in Washington, while at Dungarvan in February two hugely impressive course records were set by Fearghal Curtin (47:42) and Niamh Allen (52:51).

This time last year, a total of 81 performances by men had been achieved inside the 55:00 cut-off, this year the number has risen to 108. Dungarvan can take the credit for this upsurge as a total of 31 broke 55 minutes there compared to just seven in 2024.

While Lynch’s Irish best was the standout performance (incidentally, he’s also credited with a 53:42 in his local Danesfort race - no doubt an easy tempo run!), Ryan Creech has three performances in the 49-minure range, one of which gained him the national title in the Phoenix Park.

Niamh Allen has certainly made her mark in the past year on track, cross-country and road and her 52:51 is the second fastest by an Irishwoman over the distance after Sonia O’Sullivan’s 51:00 at the Great South Run in September 2002.

The numbers of performances for women under 65:00 this year is 90, up slightly on last year’s 86 with Trim having the highest number at 17, the same as 12 months ago.

As usual, any additions or corrections are welcome and can be made on the comments section wherever this list appears.

Guest Post: KILMALLOCK FOUR-MILE ROAD RACE, Friday May 16th 2025 ...by John Walshe

KILMALLOCK FOUR-MILE ROAD RACE, Friday May 16th 2025

On a warm evening for running, Declan Moore from the Bilboa repeated his victory from last year at the annual Kilmallock four-mile race.

His time of 19:54 was outside the 19:31 he ran last year but it gave him a clear advantage over runner-up (for the second year) Karl Lenihan of West Limerick (21:33), with Derek Kiely (Limerick) third in 22:35.

Breda Gaffney from Mallow was equally a clear winner of the women’s race in 23:56 ahead of Pamela Kirby (Bilboa), 24:57, with Susan Glennon from Mullingar finishing third in 25:09.

Along with his prize, Declan Moore also received the Jim Hogan Perpetual Cup in memory of the locally-born runner who famously won the 1966 European Marathon while representing Great Britain. The cup was presented by Mary Murphy, a sprightly 93-year-old sister of the late Jim who attended along with her husband Donal.

Born back in 1933, Jim Hogan changed his name from Cregan to Hogan after moving to England for work. He ran for Ireland in the marathon at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. There, he was in medal contention after tracking eventual winner Abebe Bikila for more than 20 miles before being forced to drop out in the closing stages due to severe dehydration.

In 1966, he went on to win the European Marathon title in a time of 2:20:04 – on this occasion wearing a British singlet, having declared for the UK citing indifferences and frustrations with the way in which Irish athletics was being run at the time. A number years ago a book was published on his life titled ‘The Irishman who ran for England’.

Jim Hogan passed away at the age of 81 back in January 2015. Such was the esteem in which he was held that former world 10,000m record holder Dave Bedford travelled from the UK for his funeral which took place in the little village of Athlacca.

In an interview back in the day, Bedford – who also served as Race Director of the London Marathon - was asked if he admired any particular athlete. He replied: “At one time I used to like Jim Hogan’s running, partly because he was a very controversial character – I like controversial characters – but also he had guts and said what he thought.”

A welcome return to the winners’ rostrum at Kilmallock was Mallow-man Pat Kerrigan, first in the M70 category. In only his third competitive outing for many years – apart from parkruns – Pat’s appearance brought back memories of the 1970s and 1980s when he was one of the outstanding runners in the county, very rarely outside the prizes.

And it wasn’t just on the Cork circuit as he also travelled overseas to compete at a time when many did not. One such trip was to the New York Marathon in 1982 where he ran 2:32:48, finishing just outside the first 200 of the 13,500 finishers.

Accompanying him on that occasion was his regular training and racing companion, Andy Neenan, who also ran an impressive time of 2:36:58 around the streets of New York.

Guest Post: IRISH 10-MILE RANKINGS 2024 ...by John Walshe

What follows is a ranking list over the popular 10-mile distance for all men (under 55:00) and women (under 65:00) for the year 2024.

This list shows the time (gun), name/club/category, the race and finishing position, along with the date. Where an athlete appears more than once, just the surname is used after the initial listing.

Although the popularity of the 10-mile distance cannot be denied, the standards up front show a decline in performances from previous years.

In 2024, the fastest women’s time was the 56:23 recorded by national marathon champion Ann-Marie McGlynn. In both 2022 and 2023 Aoife Cooke led the way with respective times of 54:19 and 54:50.

The numbers of performances for women under 60:00 was 20, compared with 18 in 2023 and 34 in 2022. The total to make the cut-off standard of 65:00 was 111, somewhat similar to 2023 (106) and 2022 (117).

However, the men’s list is somewhat more alarming. Just two men – Hugh Armstrong and Keelan Kilrehill – broke 50 minutes in 10-mile races in 2024. The previous two years showed nine (2023) and eight (2022).

Even allowing for the half-dozen or so not on this list who undoubtedly were inside 50 minutes in their half-marathons, it still leaves less inside this standard than some individual races had in the past.

The total number of performances for men under the 55:00 cut-off was also well down at 99, compared with 147 (2023) and 127 (2022).

The Irish Runner race in the Phoenix Park (which incorporated the national championship) saw the highest standard amongst the men with 21 finishing under 55:00 while Trim, with 17 under 65:00, was the top race for the women.

As usual, any additions or corrections are welcome and can be made on the comments section wherever this list appears.
