Guest Post: Commitment... by Pat Walsh
** Commitment **
What is it and what does it mean to you?Fantastic results from some runners I know in Marathons at home and abroad recently.
For those runners it is easy to define: Commitment is the ability to plan for something big and stick with it through the winter we have just experienced.
Not easy but nothing worth achieving ever is. The weather didn’t stop them, the odd injury or domestic disturbance was dealt with, accommodated and plans altered so that the goal was reached.
There are others heading to Cork or Limerick or some other big race soon that have an equitable training performance behind them.
Pick some goal for this year and plan towards it.
Make it realistic, make a plan and make sure you have enough free time to train.
Your goals may not be as lofty as others but it is still your goal. Take ownership of it and work towards it.
Your training may not be as intense but it is what you are striving to do.
You may be hampered by work, home or some injury that puts a limit on the amount you can do… But DO IT.
Fit the sessions in regardless of whether it is very early morning or late in the evening. Make it happen.
The excuses are only what you are telling yourself.
We all have to be responsible for ourselves.
It isn’t easy I will admit to roll out of bed early to meet a few more for a run.
It isn't easy heading out the door on a showery evening.
It isn't easy finding time to stretch and refuel after a run but it is needed.
It isn’t easy doing a recovery session when you are half wrecked.
Commitment will make you stronger physically and mentally.
Own your goals and your life.
Don’t let it slip by for a lack of commitment.
This day next Year you will be a year older and will it be any easier then?
Commitment is that turning point in your life when you seize the moment to alter your destiny.

First place finish for Gavin Kenny of Bandon AC |
The inaugural Bandon AC 5k road race was held on Thursday 25th April 2024 with 327 runners crossing the finish line. For a new race on a wet evening, that's a very good turnout.
Proceeds from this race goes towards the development of a new 400m athletics track which will be great not only for juveniles in Bandon but the whole West Cork region.

Guest Post: IRISH 10-MILE RANKINGS - Jan to Apr 2024 ...by John Walshe
IRISH 10-MILE RANKINGS 2024... by John Walshe
As has been compiled for the past number of years, the following is a ranking list over the popular 10-mile distance for men (under 55:00) and women (under 65:00).
This list, from January to April 25th, shows the time (gun), name/club/category, the race and finishing position, along with the date. Where an athlete appears more than once, just the surname is used after the initial listing.
Last year over the same period, 62 times for women were recorded under 65 minutes. This year, the corresponding figure is two less at 60. However, there is a more alarming fall-off for the men with just 47 inside 55 minutes compared to 84 in 2023.
Remarkably, no man has broken 50 minutes in any of the races so far in 2024. For the past two years the fastest at this stage were Yared Derese (49:04) in 2023) and Jake O’Regan (48:40) in 2022.
Likewise, the fastest amongst the women is 56:23 by Ann-Marie McGlynn at Trim compared to Aoife Cooke’s leading marks of 54:50 (2023) and 54:19 (2022).
Trim, second last year to Dungarvan, had the most women under 65:00 at 17 while Mallow overtook the West Waterford race with a total of 11 men under 55:00.
Any additions or corrections are welcome and can be made on the comments section wherever this list appears and will be included in the next updated edition published in the autumn.

Guest Post: Ballintotis 4 mile 2024 ...by Pat Walsh
** Ballintotis 4 mile Thursday 18th April **
Delighted to attend this event last Thursday evening. Definitely the best short race in Ireland at this stage. On a Thursday evening how to get 1166 runners to park, register, line-up in zone and start on time must be a logistical nightmare but it was done. It is a narrow road and route but it never seemed crowded.
The course and finish line were expertly marshalled and support was brilliant.
In a rural area with no village except a Church and a Community Centre as the focal point this is phenomenal. Everyone and I mean everyone from the area was involved. I went out to collect my number in the afternoon and ended up there an hour and a half helping to put up the presentation area. Delighted to help, they are some crew of workers.

3000 metres of coloured bunting
4000 sandwiches
Of course there was super running at the front of the race but I only report on the other side. Great crack, plenty banter. Teenage groups mixed with Mothers and Others Gaelic Football teams.
Newcomers and first timers mixed at the back with seasoned slow veterans like myself.
The enthusiasm was palpable and the smiles infectious. You were never alone and never without support.
Vital to keep a watch out for sneaky photographers who might catch you at a weak moment.
Met some buddies from the home village before the race, some running a race for the first time. It's a Miracle, there must be Holy Water in Loughaderra to get some of these running.
Afterwards we had the mandatory cuppa with the chats, pics and tales of glory. If the TV Bake-Off was held out there it would be some competition.
Prize giving went ahead on time but unless there was a prize for biggest bluffer then I had no chance. Well done to all who were called to the stage.
I paraphrase Spancil Hill to have some fun and sum up the event:
And friends assembled there,
The Young, the old,
The brave and the bold,
Their Four mile to fulfill,
At the Ballintotis Community Centre
A mile from Popes Hill”
Have a great weekend

This might be of interest for anyone who has unwanted running or sports shoes that are in good condition. Liam O'Connor sent on this information about a collection of old sports shoes in Carrigaline on the 19th & 20th Apr 2024.
Collection Days: This Friday 19th / Sat.20th April.
♻️♻️♻️Pre Owned Sports Shoes Needed♻️♻️♻️
"Our Shoes" is an appeal being held in #Carrigaline, organized by myself for a donation of quality, pre-loved trainers & sports shoes from families in Carrigaline and surrounding areas, which will be sent to kids in townships in Cape Town, South Africa.
The first ‘In My Shoes’ campaign, held in Carrigaline , saw 1,000 pairs of shoes being shipped to impoverished children in South African townships and the appeal aims to double that achievement over the coming months.
This appeal is looking for used football boots and runners/trainers in good condition, for ages 4 to 16.

Race day info for the Ballintotis 4-mile race on Thurs 18th April 2024
The big evening race in Cork this week is the Ballintotis 4-mile near Castlemartyr. This one always gets a big crowd and this year will be no different.
Note the change in car parks below, everything now is to the east of the church.
You can still enter online HERE
From the organisers... It's been a busy few weeks in Ballintotis as the local committee advance plans for this year's 4 Mile Road Race, which is set to bring huge crowds to the picturesque venue this Thursday. Bad weather has obviously hampered plans for a number of weeks, but once again the local community have come to the fore in various ways.
This year, all participants are asked to please take special note of the traffic arrangements and the location of CAR PARKS, some of which have changed from previous years, In particular, motorists travelling from the Midleton direction, should be aware that their access point to the venue will for the most part of the evening, be at the CASTLEMARTYR SIDE of Loughaderra Lake. There is no right turn from the Main Road to Race HQ.
2024 will see the Ballintotis Race incorporate the County Road Championships for the first time ever, which will add an extra dimension to this huge sporting and social occasion
Some great action is expected in the race itself with many well known names in the line up. Whilst the majority of entries have now been received online, limited walk-in entries will also be taken from 1pm up until 7.30pm in Ballintotis on race day. Number collection is available at the same time and entries/number collection is also open from 5pm to 8pm on Wednesday evening.
We urge as many people as possible to make use of these extended times for number pick up.
Before all the race action at 8pm, it's a 6pm start for the community walk, with refreshments served immediately afterwards for walkers on their return to the Community Centre.
Runners will receive their buff once they cross the finish line, whilst refreshments as usual will be served in Ballintotis Community Centre. Prize giving will take place in the marquess at the front of the Community Centre at approx 9.10pm.
Looking forward to seeing you all in Ballintotis on Thursday evening.
