Upcoming race...Old Abbey 5k road race - Sun 30th June 2013
In 2013, Old Abbey AC are celebrating their 60th anniversary having being founded back in 1953. In that first year, a road race was held which went from O'Shea's pub in Waterfall to Goggins Hill, a distance of just under 3 miles. On the day, the race was won by a Ted Geary, a native of Cobh and then running under Ballymore Cobh AC colours. Ted who is in his 80's now resides in Carrigtwohill in East Cork.
To commemorate the original event, Old Abbey will be holding a 5 km road race on Sunday, the 30th of June between Waterfall and Goggins Hill.
Registration is at Goggins Hill National School and a bus will take the runners to the start line on the Cork City side of Waterfall. Considering it's only 3 miles, I'm sure some will opt to use this as a warm up for the race itself.
More details on the Running in Munster website.

Results of the Shanagarry 5 mile road race...Thurs 27th June 2013
A record 598 runners turned out for this year's Shanagarry 5 mile road race, the second of four in the annual Ballycotton Summer Series. This is a big jump on the previous peak of 512 set back in 2011 and no doubt the fine weather on Thursday evening was a major factor in attracting the record crowds.
It's very easy to take the results and numbers for granted but it takes a lot of work and organising for a race of this size to be a success. For example, note...
1) Entry fee only €5.
2) No chip timing. This would have added probably something like €2.50 to the entry fee and yet a full set of accurate results were still produced.
3) ........and what most of you don't know. The results were being worked on until the early hours of Friday morning. They were e-mailed to me around 3am and I started on this post about 7am. The full results are up on the Internet and available for people to check just 12 hours after the race finished.
So it is worth remembering that Ballycotton Running Promotions, the organisers of the Summer Series and the Ballycotton 10 are doing all of this work on a voluntary basis. You might turn up and just run the race but there is an awful lot of work going on behind the scenes to make races like this a success.

Airtricity announced as new Title Sponsor for 2013 Dublin City Marathon
Some good news for the Dublin City Marathon! Back in May of 2012, the organisers of the Dublin City Marathon announced that they had lost a main sponsor for their event. Back in April of this year, they announced even more cut backs with a reduction in the prize money and the elite fields. Considering that the Dublin City Marathon is the 7th largest Marathon in Europe by size, it seemed crazy that it couldn't get proper sponsorship.
On Wednesday the 26th of June, it was announced that Airtricity will now sponsor the Dublin City Marathon and the race series.
Here is the press release below...
Airtricity, Ireland’s greenest and second-largest energy provider, was today announced as the new title sponsor of the Dublin Marathon. This partnership also includes the Race Series, which will take place in Swords and the Phoenix Park in June, July, August and September 2013 in preparation for the main Marathon event. This announcement was made earlier today by Airtricity Dublin Marathon Race Director Jim Aughney, in the company of Stephen Wheeler, Airtricity Managing Director, and fitness expert and TV Broadcaster Karl Henry at the official launch at the 5 Mile Mark in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.
Last year, a record of over 14,000 people participated in the Dublin Marathon and over 20,000 people took part across the Race Series in the months leading up. The economic value of the Airtricity Dublin Marathon to the city and county of Dublin over the October Bank Holiday weekend is estimated at over €10 million.
Welcoming the new sponsorship Airtricity Dublin Marathon Race Director Jim Aughney commented:...“We are delighted to have Airtricity on board as our new title sponsor this year. Airtricity shares our vision and aims for the growth of the Dublin Marathon. It is a huge endorsement of what we have achieved to date, and strong support for our development plans, to have such a sponsor involved. Airtricity has a great history of supporting events in Ireland and we look forward to developing a long-term relationship with them."
Stephen Wheeler, Airtricity Managing Director, commented:...“As someone who ran my first Dublin Marathon in 2011, I’m delighted that Airtricity is the new energy behind this well-loved Dublin and national sporting event. Airtricity is a proud supporter of Irish Sport at all levels. Through our investment as title sponsor of the Airtricity League, as Official Energy Partner to the FAI and its international teams, and as a supporter of local sports clubs nationwide through our wind farm community funds, we’re doing more to give back to local and national sporting clubs and events. Now, through our sponsorship of the Airtricity Dublin Marathon, we’re helping to support the marathon and race series at this important stage in its development and growth.”
Well-known fitness expert and TV Broadcaster Karl Henry said:...“It is great to see Airtricity come on board and give the Dublin Marathon a huge boost ahead of this year’s event. With over 14,000 participants last year, the marathon and race series is a fantastic way to get out and get fit. With today’s boost, hopefully more and more people will sign up and ensure that the 2013 Airtricity Dublin Marathon will surpass last year’s level and create new records.”
The Airtricity Dublin Marathon takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, 28th October 2013.
2013 Airtricity Race Series
5 Mile run – Saturday 29 June, Phoenix Park
Fingal 10K run – Sunday 21 July, Swords
Frank Duffy 10 Mile run – Saturday 24 August, Phoenix Park
Dublin Half Marathon – Saturday 21 September, Phoenix Park
Airtricity Dublin Marathon 2013 - Monday October 28th 2013
What this actually means in reality, we'll have to wait to see. I presume there will b live TV coverage? Will it change the elite fields or prize money? At least for now, it secures the future of the event.

Please make sure you leave nothing on display in your car and take anything of value even if you are passing it every so often.

You can pre-enter for this race HERE, fee €10. You can also enter on the night for €15. Race HQ is the GAA community hall which is directly across from the church at the western end of the town.
Organised by Millstreet AC, the course has been accurately measured by Jones Counter and has an Athletics Ireland licence. More info closer to the date.

Race notice...Run Killarney Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10k - Sat 20th July 2013
Since it's inception, this event has evolved from year on year. At first, it was just the 15 mile 'Maxi-Marathon'. Over time, a Half-Marathon event was added and this year, a full Marathon option has been included.
The Marathon and the 13.1 mile Half-Marathon will start at 8:00am near Moll's Gap on the Kenmare road. The shorter 10k race will start near Muckross House in the park at 11am.
Entry for each race includes...Closed roads, Customised finisher medal, Technical T-shirt, Chip timing, Prizes, Massage at finish line, Hot and cold tubs & showers, Free post race party and BBQ, Officially measured course, Fully Marshalled route with water stops and medical safety cover throughout.
Full/Half Course description.......The race starts at about 800 feet above sea level near Moll's Gap. Initially it's flat but as you approach the Gap itself, the road starts to drop and you have a stunning view across to the Macgillycuddy's Reeks and the highest mountains in Ireland.
From here the road continues to drop as you run with lakes and mountains as a backdrop for the race..... Past Lady's View......Looking down on the Upper Lakes......and eventually you turn off into Killarney National Park near the entrance to Torc Waterfall.
The Half-Marathon then proceeds past Muckross House to the finish while the full Marathon continues on to take in another 13.1 miles in the northern part of the park before returning to the finish line.
As you can see from the maps above, there is a lot of downhill running in the first few miles. The 10k course takes in a shorter loop starting and finishing near the park.

Keith Whyte sets new Irish 100k record in Belgium
On Saturday the 22nd of June, Keith Whyte of Ennis Track Club in Co.Clare set a new Irish record for the 100 km Ultra-Marathon. Taking part in the Night of Flanders 100 km race in the North of Belgium, Keith finished in a time of 7h 03m 53s, beating the old record of 7h 05m 06s which was set by Thomas Maguire in Seoul, South Korea in October 2006.
Just to give you some idea of how fast that is, it's an average of 6:49 per mile for just over 62 miles!

The Price of Gold...What it's like to train at an elite level
Just what does it take to win an Olympic Gold medal? This one hour documentary looks at elite Swedish athletes and what they had to do to get a top podium finish...the training, the sacrifices, the pain and the injuries. One consistent theme is that too many people were over training, especially those at a young age. Anyone with an interest in athletics should find this of interest. Recommended.
