Notice : GR8KM race in Mitchelstown, NE Cork - Fri 9th Aug 2019

The GR8KM organised by Galtee Runners AC coming up on Friday, the 9th of August 2019. As the name suggests, it is an 8 km road race on the roads around Mitchelstown and considering its proximity to the several major roads, it is likely to attract runners from North Cork, Limerick and Tipperary.

With the M8 motorway, Mitchelstown is only 50 kms or a 35-40 minute drive from Cork City so it's an option for city based runners as well.

They have the same 8km course this year with €200 on offer to anyone breaking the 8km course record (male & female). The race is sponsored by Kerrygold Park. ..

From Galtee Runners AC...  Galtee Runners with Kerrygold Park are proud to present our 10th Annual GR8 8km road run. As it's our 10th year, we will be giving out a special Beanie hat to every runner!

Our new route introduced in 2017 is ideal for getting some PB's and it is also without some of those dreaded hills!

Our HQ for this year's GR8 will once again be the Mitchelstown Leisure Centre and registration will begin here at 5:30pm on Friday 9th August.

Entry for the run is just €10 with all category prizes on offer and all entrants will be chip timed. The race itself will begin at 7:30pm SHARP

All levels of ability are welcome and we hope to see as many numbers out as possible. What better way to run off those cobwebs from the Bank Holiday Weekend!!

**Course Record** :: We are delighted to announce that this year's course record prize has been kept at €200!! Last year 2018 winners were Clonmel AC's Kevin Maunsell and St Finbarrs AC's Martina Kiely and they set new course records with 23:57 & 29:18 respectively... Can these be beaten this year?

***

The race will start and finish at the the Mitchelstown Leisure Centre which is just behind the Tesco shopping centre.

Notice : Cloyne 5km road race - Thurs 18th July 2019

The annual Cloyne 5km road race takes place in East Cork on Thursday, the 18th of July 2019 at 8pm.

As races go, this is a reasonably flat and fast course. There are no real hills as such, just a few short sections where the road rises by a few metres at most. Outside of the Centre Park Road course in Cork City, it doesn't get much flatter. If you want to try for a fast 5k time, then this is the one to do.

If you are coming from the Cork city, then Cloyne is just a 22-25 minute drive from the Jack Lynch tunnel. Considering the number of runners within say a 30 minute drive of it, the race is likely to attract a large crowd.

From the organisers...The race will be chip timed, and the route (start/finish) and HQ all remain the same as last year. Registrations on the day of the race will open in the School from 3.00pm for anyone that wishes to enter earlier in the day.

National Marathon in Portlaoise in 1986

This short video clip below is of the BLE National Marathon in Portlaoise in 1986 and some Cork runners were mentioned in it. Race stewards weren't in fashion back then ;o)

John Walshe of Ballycotton sent on this short report of the event...

BLE NATIONAL MARATHON 1986

The BLE (Irish) marathon championship of 1986 took place on the Saturday afternoon of April 13 from Portlaoise. It followed a triangular course made up of Portlaoise, Mountrath and Abbeyleix. The line-up of around 90 runners was the smallest field to contest the national championship in 10 years.

The leaders up to halfway were Roy Dooney, Kingston Mills and defending champion John O’Toole from nearby Tullamore. O’Toole dropped out before 20 miles, leaving Dooney and Mills to battle it out for the title. Dooney had run the Hiroshima Marathon in Japan the previous year in 2:14:38 and was therefore the favourite. However, on the road home from Abbeyleix, Mills made his move and Dooney couldn’t respond.
