Results of the Cloyne 5k - Thurs 29th June 2023

This year's Cloyne 5k road race was held on Thursday 29th June 2023 and 189 runners took part. That's a big jump up from the figure of 123 for 2022 when it was a 5-mile race and it was held on the Thursday before the Cork City Marathon. The move to late June certainly seems to have helped.

Notice : Cloyne 5km road race - Thurs 18th July 2019

The annual Cloyne 5km road race takes place in East Cork on Thursday, the 18th of July 2019 at 8pm.

As races go, this is a reasonably flat and fast course. There are no real hills as such, just a few short sections where the road rises by a few metres at most. Outside of the Centre Park Road course in Cork City, it doesn't get much flatter. If you want to try for a fast 5k time, then this is the one to do.

If you are coming from the Cork city, then Cloyne is just a 22-25 minute drive from the Jack Lynch tunnel. Considering the number of runners within say a 30 minute drive of it, the race is likely to attract a large crowd.

From the organisers...The race will be chip timed, and the route (start/finish) and HQ all remain the same as last year. Registrations on the day of the race will open in the School from 3.00pm for anyone that wishes to enter earlier in the day.

Reminder...Cloyne 5k road race - Wed 6th Aug 2014

Just a reminder that the Cloyne 5k road race is coming up on Wednesday the 6th of August at 8pm. This is another one of the big 5k races in East Cork and is sure to get another large turnout on Wednesday again.

The race will be “chip timed”.  Cost is €10 for runners and €5 for anyone that wishes to walk.

You can enter on the day from 5pm or you can pre-register on Tuesday evening in the school from 5-7pm.

More info including the race flyer, maps and preview in this previous post.

The success of races like Cloyne are due in large part to the effort put in by the local community. Local people...many with no direct involvement with running...give up their time in order to assist an event which raises funds for various projects which benefit the local community.

This is a short report from the local community council about the race and shows where some of the funds that have been raised in the last few years have gone...

Under the guidance of Margaret Twohig, a new 5K Road Race in Cloyne was held on the 9th of September 2010 after an absence of many years. The race was in aid of Cystic Fibrosis that year and Margaret was kindly assisted with the organising by the Members of the local Community Council. It was a huge success and the Community Council decided to hold the event annually from thereon, dispersing funds to local groups i.e the Parents Association of Cloyne National School benefited from the road race in 2012. The funds raised the past two years have gone towards the newly built Children’s Playground which was opened in 2013.

Playground funding.
Main funding came from South & East Cork Area Development (SECAD) Approx 70%. Other funding came from Cork County Council. Approx 15%. The remaining funds were raised by Cloyne District Community Council (CDCC).
The Rachel Allen cookery demonstration was very successful and the annual 5K road race is also a great support to our fundraising.
We also had several other small fundraising events that were organised by many of our committee members throughout the past few years.

Many thank to all bodies and people who helped in raising these funds and also a big thanks to all in our community and all our kind sponsors who contributed to these funds and in making our race the success it is today.

Thank you all....Cloyne Community Council.

Race notice...Cloyne 5 km road race - Wed 7th Aug 2013

The Cloyne 5k takes place in East Cork on Wednesday, the 7th of August at 7:30pm. As races go, this is a reasonably flat and fast course. There are no real hills as such, just a few short sections where the road rises by a few metres at most. Outside of the Marina course in Cork City, it doesn't get much flatter.

Preview of the Cloyne 5k road race - Wed 8th Aug 2012

One of the main races this week in Cork is the 5k road race coming up in Cloyne in East Cork on Wednesday, the 8th of August at 7:30pm. It might be worth mentioning that this race is suitable for all types of runner.......from those at the front racing it to those at the back who might feel that 5 kms is the maximum distance they could run. All are welcome.

Directions...From Cork get on the N25 Cork to Midleton motorway, not tuning off until you come to the Lakeview roundabout at the end of the dual carriageway. At this roundabout you take the 3rd exit signposted for Cloyne, Whitegate and Aghada. Approximately 1km out this road you will come to a statue – here you can take either of the following routes to Cloyne:-

A). Via Ballinacurra to your left. This is the main road to Ballycotton. When you enter Cloyne via this route, you take a right and the main crossroads in Cloyne and the school is just up the road.
OR

B). Via Saleen. Stay on the road south for Whitegate. You climb a large hill.....down the other side into Saleen.....up another slight hill......and then as you go downhill again, you turn left at the crossroads towards Cloyne (well signposted). This road will bring you directly to the school for registration.

Parking....There will be parking available and will be signposted.

Entries....Entries on the night will be taken at Cloyne National School from 4.30pm. The entry fee is €8 and all proceeds are going towards the National School.

Please note that there are no shower facilities. Also note that headphones are not allowed for insurance reasons as the race is on a public road.

The course.....As courses go, this one is pretty flat. There are no big hills or even anything that you would consider a hill. There are a few spots where the road rises a few metres at most. If it's a fast 5k time you are after then this is the one.

The race starts and finishes on the road outside the school. As you can see above, it's reasonably wide and flat. The section from here to the main crossroads in the village is approx 500 metres.

As you approach the crossroads, you have the first 'hill'. As you can see, it is only a short climb with a few metres gained in height before you turn off right onto a flat road. This is also part of the approach to the finishing straight so you gain coming back.

After the crossroads, you are on Church Street and you head down towards the iconic Cloyne round tower, one of only 2 round towers in the county of Cork. Built approx 1000 years ago and reaching 30 metres in height, it can be seen from various points along the course.

At the road junction at the round tower is the start of the loop. For now, you keep going straight and slightly downhill as you leave the village...

...and then onto a straight flat section...

...and at the end, the road veers around to the left. It begins to climb slightly now to the 1 mile mark but still, very slightly. Overall, a fast mile.

Soon, you come to the next turnoff and you are onto narrow quiet country roads.

Around the 1.5 mile mark, you turn left around a sharp corner and the road stretches ahead.....dead straight and flat with the 2 mile mark way off near the end...another fast mile.

After the 2 mile mark, you take another sharp bend and you start heading west back towards Cloyne on what is another flat road with a few bends. As you approach the round tower for the second time, the road rises slightly...

...and then you turn right back onto Church Street and retrace your steps towards the crossroads, school and the finish line.

Overall.......a fast 5k course on a reasonably flat course on quiet country roads. Considering that it is reasonably close to Cork City and Midleton, it is likely to attract a large crowd.

Results of the Cloyne 5k road race - Thurs 9th Sept 2010

This 5 km road race in aid of Cystic Fibrosis attracted 280 runners on a dull and overcast evening in Cloyne in East Cork. Considering that this was a new race, that is an excellent number.

It also marked the end of the summer season as it was the last evening road race. From here on, it's back to races at the weekend....at least for races in daylight anyway! ;o)

The full results are now available HERE. I have highlighted the women in the top 100 so that they're a bit easier to pick out.

We have a slideshow of photos from John O'Driscoll HERE . Perhaps the photos might suggest that it was darker than what it was in reality but there is no doubt that the evenings are closing in fast.

John also has a video clip on YouTube. This shows the runners as they approach the finishing line with a few hundred metres to go.

Preview of the Cloyne 5 km road race - Thurs 9th Sept 2010

There are 2 big races coming up this week....one long, one short. Next Sunday, there is the Cork Half-Marathon  in Blarney which is sure to attract a big turnout. I'll put up a preview of that here in a day or two. In the meantime, here is a preview of a new 5 km race on the calendar.

Cloyne 5 km road race....This new road race is in aid of Cystic Fibrosis and it promises to be a flat and fast course. The entry fee is €8 and the race starts at 7:30pm.

Directions.....Cloyne is on the main Cork to Ballycotton road. Just follow the signposts for Ballycotton / Cloyne from Midleton and look for signs as you enter Cloyne. Entries will be taken at the National School which is on the right at the crossroads in the centre of the town.

Course.....The start is near the school. You run back into the town and turn right at the main crossroads. Here you pass the 30 metre high round tower which is approximately 1,000 years old and is only one of two in the county of Cork. You continue southwards on the road towards Churchtown South  and soon you hit the 1 mile mark.....a fast mile.

You continue on for a bit before turning off left onto a narrower and quieter country road. There are no real pulls as you run towards the 2 mile mark.....another fast mile.
Now the road turns back towards Cloyne and you should be able to pick out the round tower in the distance. As you approach the tower, you turn right at the junction, up a short distance to the main crossroads and then left and towards the finish line which is close to the where the race started.

Overall, the course has been accurately measured and there should be some fast times posted on the night. The entry fee is a modest €8 and all proceeds are in aid of Cystic Fibrosis and it seems likely to attract a big crowd.

I have put the course up on the MapMyRun website. Just zoom in and out to get your bearings.

A flyer for the course can be seen HERE
