Notice: Newmarket 5k road race - Sun 19th Dec 2021

This popular 5 km road race is coming up in the town of Newmarket in North-West Cork on Sunday the 19th of December 2021. This is a fast 5k course and gets a good turnout every year.

Update from Duhallow AC... "Due to circumstances beyond our control the Start time of our race is been deferred one hour to  start at a new time of 2pm . We are sorry for inconvenience caused due to this. This call was made in the interest of the athletes health and safety due an event taking place causing traffic congestion in the town at the initial race star time."

No Newmarket 10-mile road race in 2022

Duhallow AC have announced that there won't be any 10-mile road race in Newmarket in NW Cork in 2022. If it was going ahead then it would be held on the second Sunday of March, the traditional date of the now discontinued Ballycotton 10-mile road race which ended in 2017.

The chart below shows the numbers for the Newmarket 10-mile. From 2018 to 2020, it had been growing steadily. 

Undertaking two big races in a year is a big commitment for a small club so it probably shouldn't be a big surprise to see them drop one.

The question now is if someone else will pick up the old Ballycotton date?

There was another large turnout for this years Newmarket 5k road race with 335 runners taking part. One of the most notable features in the results was just how fast the field was. An impressive 115 runners ran under 20 minutes.

Duhallow AC will be holding their annual 10 mile road race in Newmarket in North-West Cork on  Sunday the 10th of March 2019.

Results & Photos of the Newmarket 5k road race - Sun 16th Dec 2018

After a miserable wet start to the day, the weather forecast was spot on as the clouds parted for the start of the Newmarket 5k at 1pm. As conditions go, it was more or less perfect with bright winter sunshine for the whole race. No sooner was the race over when the rain returned.

One particular feature of this race is that the field was very strong. An amazing 108 of the 344 finishers were under 20 minutes which is way faster than most 5k races.

As can be seen from the chart above, this year set a new record for the number of finishers! A lot of races in 2018 have seen their numbers drop or flatten out. The Newmarket race has been growing since 2015.

The race HQ this year is at the Hi-Lands which is a change to the usual High Street Bar (see preview). As you can see from the race flyer above, there are lots of generous prizes on offer.

Notice : Duhallow AC 10 mile road race in Newmarket - Sun 8th April 2018

Just a reminder that the Duhallow AC 10 mile road race in Newmarket is coming up on Sunday the 8th of April 2018.

Online entries are now closed but you can still enter on the day.

There will be a dry fit top for the first 700 to register.


The 10 mile route is an out and back course and it can be seen below. Parts of the course will be the same as the Newmarket 5k course which is held every December.

As can be seen above, there is a climb before the 4 mile mark but the last 3 miles are nice and fast.

Despite the fact there were several races on in Cork today, the Newmarket 5k got a record turnout of 297 runners, up a whopping 34% on last year. The quality of the field was also particularly high with no fewer than 96 runners breaking 20 minutes. There are very few 5k race where a third of the field breaks 20 mins.

A total of 232 runners turned out for this years Newmarket 5k road race in NW Cork. One of the most noticeable features of this particular race was the strength of the field with no less than 18 runners breaking 17 minutes.

The winner of the womens race was Michelle Finn of Leevale AC who won a team bronze medal at the European Cross Country Championships in Bulgaria just a week ago. Michelle's winning time was 16:33.

Race notice...Newmarket 5 km road race - Sun 22nd Dec 2013

This popular 5 km road race is coming up in the town of Newmarket in NW Cork on Sunday the 22nd of December. This is a fast 5k course and gets a good turnout every year.

One change this year is that the race HQ is at the James O'Keeffe Institute. The race start is about one mile from there so they will be closing entries at 12:40pm sharp.

As you can see from the race flyer above, there are lots of generous prizes on offer and the entry fee is €10. To take off some of the pressure on the day, the organisers Duhallow AC are asking people who are intending to run to enter online HERE

Anyone who enters online will be entered into a draw for a Christmas hamper.
