The 16th year of the annual Eagle Athletic Club Cheetah Run was officially launched by masters athlete Billy Cabal.

Aged 83, Billy has completed more Cheetah Runs than any other runner since its inception in 2008. Online registration opens on April 7th at Eventmaster.ie and the popular race is set to take place on Thursday, May 14th, 2026, at Fota Wildlife Park. The annual race continues to serve as a key fundraising event for Fota Wildlife Park, and funds raised during the event support the Park’s vital ongoing conservation work.

Also in attendance at the launch of this year’s event were emerging Cork athletes, Alison Brennan (Ballymore Cobh AC) and siblings Louise and Laura Twohig (Blarney Inniscarra AC).

The yearly event features a 5k route for adults (aged 16 years +) and a 1-Mile Race for junior runners (11-15 years) and is sponsored by John Buckley Sports and Brooks Running. Last year, the event raised €5,000 for the Red Panda Network, helping protect this endangered species. Funds raised annually support Fota Wildlife Park's conservation programmes, including endangered species protection and native wildlife initiatives."

Growing popularity of the Cheetah Run 5k in recent years...

It's always interesting to look at the numbers taking part in local races and seeing if they show any trends. The one question is if we're near the peak of a running boom or if there are still signs of growth?

The Cheetah Run in Fota Wildlife Park is different from other 5k races in that it takes place in a unique location. Because of the narrow paths in the park, the numbers are limited to about 900 every year.

The chart above shows how long it takes for the 900 entries to sell out every year. In 2022 and 2023, it took over a month to sell out. Contrast that to 2025 when it took just one day.

If the above numbers are anything to go by then it suggests that we are still in a growth phase.

Results of the Cheetah Run in Fota Wildlife Park...Thurs 14th May 2015

There's no doubt about it but Fota Wildlife Park is such a unique spot for a race. It's just so unusual seeing people warming up for a race and running past Wallabies, Cheetahs, Eagles, Peacocks and Howler Monkeys to name just a few of the attractions.

In terms of conditions, it was dry and overcast. A bit of sunshine might have been nice but at least the rain held off.

Looking through the results, 60.6% of the field were women which is exceptionally high.

Remember, John Buckley Sports are offering 20% off if you bring your race number into their shop. Valid until the 28th of May.

Notice...Cheetah Run in Fota Wildlife Park - Thurs 14th May 2015

It's that time of year again! The Cheetah Run is coming up in Fota Wildlife Park on Thursday, the 14th of May. This is a 4 mile race which has been properly measured by Jones Counter and has an Athletics Ireland licence.

This is one of the most popular races in Cork and it's easy to see why. Not only is the race unique in that it is through a wildlife park but anyone entering can also bring family members along.

Last year, the field was limited to 900 runners and entries sold out in a few hours. It's very likely that there will be a similar level of demand this year. There will be chip timing again like last year.

Because of the high demand, the online entries in two batches, once in the morning and once in the evening to accommodate people at work and at home.

Entries....On Thursday the 30th of April, online entries will open at 10am. It will stay open until 450 places are filled. It seems very likely that based on last year, these 450 will sell out very fast. Once the first 450 entries are filled, entries will close. At 7pm that evening, entries will open again until the remaining 450 places sell out.

The entry fee for this years race is €12. This includes free access to the wildlife park for the runner and family members. This normally costs €14.30 per adult, or €44 for a family of two adults and two children.
Eagle AC member Annemarie Power with Olympic legend Sonia O'Sullivan

Please note.....No buggies/baby strollers...no headphones....no transfers....and no late entries.
They cannot cater for walkers, due to the overlap nature of the course.  The minimum age is 18 as per Athletics Ireland permit recommendations.

There will be prizes for the first 5 men and women as well as the usual age categories. The exact number of prizes for the age categories will be determined after the online entries close with the aim of making each age category competitive.

I would seriously advise people that have an interest in doing this race to enter as soon as it opens. It really will sell out early.

Updates about the race will be made available here and on the race page on the Eagle AC website.
