Notice: Cork BHAA Gas Networks Ireland 5k road race - Wed 10th July 2019

The annual Cork BHAA Gas Networks Ireland 5k road race is coming up on Wednesday the 10th of July 2019 at 8pm in Cork City.

The Cork Boat Club which is located in Blackrock village will be the race HQ. The race starts near Pairc Uí Chaoimh and takes in the Centre Park Road, Monghan Road and the Marina. As courses go, there are no hills and it's flat and fast.

The one issue however is parking. It is very limited near the Cork Boat Club but there is plenty at the other end of Marina near Pairc Uí Chaoimh.

Here is some information from the organisers..... The Gas Networks Ireland race takes place at a Marina 5k route this year. Registration is from 6.30pm at Cork Boat Club in Blackrock village with the race starting at 8pm up near Lee Rowing Club. Registration will close at 7.45pm to allow runners get to the start which is approximately 1 mile from Cork Boat Club.

Free travel mugs for the first 500 to register on the night
Parking...The following areas are where you are likely to find parking but these will fill up early so it would be worth getting to registration as early as possible.

a) Car parks on far side of Blackrock Castle. These will fill up with early morning walkers if we have a fine morning
b) Parking near Shandon Boat Club where traditionally a lot of people would have parked for Marina 5k races. If you’ve car-pooled, the driver can drop off others who can register for them at Cork Boat Club and meet them at the start.
c) City side of Blackrock church. Meadow Grove Estate which is between Blackrock Village and Skehard Rd.

As always, the entry fee is €5 for registered runners and €10 for non-registered. I suggest you park your car and jog to the race HQ with the exact entry fee. From there, go to the start line.

A free travel mug will also be given out to the first 500 runners to register...

Cork runners on the podium in Malaga race...

Cork runners Conor McCauley of Leevale AC and John Meade of St.Finbarr's AC made it onto the podium at a recent race in Malaga, Spain. The race which was roughly 7kms in length was also covered by Spanish TV and it was interesting to see what a race in Spain looks like ... with sunshine! The podium section is around the 28 minute mark.

Donal Coakley of Leevale AC was also there and gives a report of the race in his own unique style...

Preview of the Emer Casey 10k - Sun 20th May 2012

This popular 10k road race in Youghal is coming up on Sunday, the 20th of May at 1:30pm. As you can see from the poster above, the entry fee is €20 and it's likely to attract a large turnout like in previous years.

Entries.......Online registration is now closed. Registration will take place on Saturday May 19th from 12-2 pm or on Sunday May 20th from 11am at Pobalscoil na Trionoide, Youghal. Numbers will also be collected at this time.
Pobalscoil na Trionoide

Directions......It's very easy to find the registration point and start for this race. Just take the by-pass around Youghal and at the top of the hill, take the slip road that takes you into Youghal. After a few hundred metres, you'll see the school shown above on your left hand side. Parking is available at the school and on grounds adjacent to the school. Please do not park on the road outside the school as this is part of the race route

Course...The start of the race is just up the road by the water tower....

The first 1.3 miles of this race are very fast indeed. From the start near the tower, you run back towards the school. The road here is pretty straight and is slightly downhill until it turns off left...

Then it's a long downhill section to the 1 mile mark and a very fast first mile. The course now continues downhill until you reach the bottom of the hill around the 1.5 mile mark...

After turning left, the road here is flat as you head back in towards the town again and the 2 mile mark....another fast mile. After this, the road begins to climb...

...but it's pretty gradual. You hit the top of this small hill around 2.6 miles where the lighthouse looks out over Youghal harbour....

You will have to tackle this hill again but from the other side on the way back. For now, you continue around the corner and begin the long downhill.

At the end where the road passes the park with the grandstand and at around 3 miles, the road splits to begin a loop around the old part of the town....
The road now is narrow as it goes between tall buildings on either side of the road. Just up ahead, you run under the iconic Clock Gate Tower (Built in 1777, the town's Clock Gate was built on the site of Trinity Castle, part of the town's fortifications. The Clock Gate served the town as gaol and public gallows until 1837; prisoners were executed by being hanged from the windows).

Probably best not to dwell too much on the 'gallows' part ;o) . From here, the road continues past all of the small shops until you hit the roundabout at the far side of the town just beyond the 4 mile mark...

From here, you turn for home and head back into the town again....
Around the 5.2 mile mark, you complete the loop as you re-join the road you were on earlier. From here, it's a gentle climb back up to where the lighthouse is before turning off left at the next junction...

From here, it's downhill and then flat to the finish line...

Overall.....It's a fast course that starts high above the town and finishes near sea level. The only real hill to speak of is near the lighthouse which you'll have to tackle twice. Compared to other courses, that climb is really a minor affair and you can expect a fast time.

Post race.........Courtesy buses for transport back to the school will be parked at Tides car park located 100 metres approx. from the finish line. The bus will make several transfers. You may therefore need to wait a short time for a returning bus. For anyone who want to run back up to the school, it's about 1.5 miles.

A free draw with numerous spot prizes will take place in the school after the race. Just write your name on the back of your race number and place it into the entry box which will be located in the gym hall in the school where registration took place. Refreshments and showers are available in the school after the race together with a free T-shirt for all finishers

All proceeds from the race go to Ovarian/Uterine/Endometrial Cancer Research. More information on the Emer Casey Foundation website

Race notice...Doneraile 5 mile race - Sun 23rd Oct 2011

This new 5 mile race is coming up in Doneraile Park on Sunday the 23rd of October at 2pm. Organised in conjunction with Awbeg Athletic Club, it has an Athletics Ireland licence.

Please note registrations close at 1:30pm.  It is about a 600m walk to the start and so early and timely registration is critical.

Doneraile is centrally located in north Cork and is within easy reach of runners in Limerick, South Tipperary as well as Cork City.

The race has a number of unique features that set it apart from other races.

1) The setting...Doneraile Park which is an old country estate. At this time of year with the autumnal colours, it's a stunning spot to hold a race. Most of the course is within the confines of the park and is closed to traffic. It really is the jewel of North Cork and it's amazing how people don't even know about it.

2) The Steeplechase......Many people will not know that the original steeplechase actually took place in Doneraile. While the word 'steeplechase' today is associated with an olympic track event or a horse race, the very first steeplechase took place here in the 18th century......(Wikipedia...The first steeplechase is said to have been the result of a wager in 1752 between Cornelius O'Callaghan and Edmund Blake, racing four miles (6 km) cross-country from Buttevant Church to St. Leger Church in Doneraile, in Cork, Ireland.). Drawing on that tradition, the race will start at the Roman Catholic church in the town and finish outside the Church of Ireland church....i.e. steeple to steeple. There will also be token steeplechase jumps at each mile marker but these are completely optional. There is no advantage to be gained by jumping them but might be used by some of the slower runners doing it for fun ;o)

3) Relay event.....might be one for beginners? Teams of 3 people can take part also. The first person runs 2 miles with the 2 others doing 1.5 miles eace. Please note that last registration is at 1:30pm. Allow time for members of the team to get to the start and changeover points.

4) Discount for Fit4Life runners.....This event is supported by the Cork Local Sports Partnership and Fit4Life members will recieve 50% discount if they enter through Claire Hurley at  churley@corksports.ie

5) Golf.........For anyone wanting to make a day of it, the local Golf Course are offering discounted green fees for the 9 hole golf course...(€10 but must be booked in advance)

6) Juvenile races...While the main race is on, there will other shorter 800m and 1 mile races for juvenile runners...U12, U14 and U16. Entry is free but must be pre-entered.

In short, there is plenty there to make it a day out for the whole family instead of just turning up at a race and rushing away again. The entry fee is €12 and you can enter online at the organisers website......http://www.sportingdoneraile.com/

That site also has plenty of other info. A full preview will be posted here just before the race.

Here is a short video clip to give you a little taste of what the park is like...
