West Waterford AC sign lease to develop new athletics track in Dungarvan

West Waterford Athletic Club recently signed a lease with St Augustine’s College to develop a new 8-lane athletics track in Dungarvan.

West Waterford AC press release... "In 1842 Irish Augustinian Friars established Villanova University in the USA, one of the most prestigious Universities for Track and Field in the world. This is the University where Irish Olympic Gold medallist Ronnie Delany, Eamonn Coghlan and Sonia O’Sullivan along with a host of other Irish international athletes all studied and competed.

St. Augustine’s College, Dungarvan is steeped in athletics tradition lead by the Brother Patrick Lennon OSA. The school is listed 4th in an Athletics Ireland “Top Irish Athletics Schools of All Time”.

Both St. Augustine’s College and West Waterford A.C. have nurtured the talents of many students who have excelled on both the national and international stage over many years. The Friary has been the home of West Waterford A.C. since the club was founded in 1994, hosting numerous County, Provincial and National athletics cross country championships as well as club training sessions and the annual primary school sports.

School Principal John Keane, Bro Patrick Lennon OSA & members of West Waterford AC

February 27th 2026 will be remembered as a red letter day in the history of the club and St Augustine’s College as it was the date a lease was signed between both parties for a parcel of land for West Waterford AC to construct an 8 lane athletics facility.

Such a facility will serve all the athletic clubs in the region as well as schools and the wider West Waterford community.

Principal of St Augustine’s College John Keane stated “Everyone in the St. Augustine's school community are delighted with the news of this fantastic project. It will provide excellent opportunities for the students in our college and the people of Waterford. I would like to thank the members of West Waterford Athletic Club for their commitment to this development and the Augustinian School Trust for their generosity in providing access to the site. We look forward to working together to deliver this athletics track and facilities over the coming years”.

Olympian and West Waterford AC Trustee Jamie Costin stated “Having travelled the world as an athlete and competed on many different athletics tracks, it has always been a dream to have an athletics track and field facility in Dungarvan. Such an amenity will provide opportunities for the next generation of children in the region to try the various disciplines the sport has to offer. There is a long road ahead before this project is delivered however with the support of Waterford City and County Council and the wider community we can construct a facility that we can all be truly proud of.

To mark the occasion of signing the lease, the club made a special presentation to their club President Brother Patrick Lennon OSA.

Br Patrick Lennon OSA, Kate Veale, Tom Leahy

West Waterford AC will now move to the design phase before submitting a planning application to Waterford City and County Council in the coming months.

If you are interested in supporting this project please email wwactrackdevelopment AT gmail DOT com or contact any member of the committee.

Analysis... This is a major development for athletics in Waterford and east Cork. There are existing 400m athletic tracks in Waterford City, Cork City and Clonmel but they are all quite a distance from Dungarvan. It's 30kms or a 30 min drive from Youghal to Dungarvan so it's not hard to imagine this new track having a big impact on athletics in east Cork.

It costs something like €1.5 million to develop a new athletics track so this is quite an undertaking for the club. West Waterford AC already hosts the second largest 10-mile road race in Ireland so that should hopefully fund part of it over time.

There will obviously be some government sports grants in the mix along the way but signing the lease is an important first step in what will probably be a long journey.

How long will it take? West Limerick AC developed an athletics track in Newcastle West in Co Limerick over the last decade. The final feasibility study for the project was published in 2016 and the track opened in 2023... i.e seven years.

If we apply the same criteria to Dungarvan then we get a completion date of 2033.

Irish racewalking international athlete Kate Veale takes podium place in Slovakia - 26th Apr 2025

Kate Veale of West Waterford AC was in action in Slovakia over the weekend and managed to secure a podium place in a strong international field.

Post race, Kate wrote... "Nice to get a podium place at the World Tour of Racewalking event in Slovakia.

Disappointed with the time as I hoped for a lot quicker. It was however nice to just race  and have a battle for the placing. After the 3rd km I didn’t even look at my watch. We can often get too caught up with splits and times instead of just raw racing. "

Report from West Waterford AC...

KATE VEALE 3RD AT WORLD TOUR RACE WALK IN SLOVAKIA.

The Slovak national championships were held today Saturday in the town of Borský Mikuláš in the western part of the country. This race was a silver world tour event and is one of the oldest race walking meets around Europe celebrating its 56th year. There were races for all ages and distances from 1km to the 20km distance.

West Waterford’s Kate Veale made the trip to compete over the 10k distance in search of a qualifying time for the European cup of race walking due to be held in the Czech town of Podabrady on 18th of May next. Finishing 3rd with a time of 49.35,Kate hopes this will now to see her selected when the Irish team is selected for the European cup. The race was won by top Mexican walker Martinez Valeria Ortuno in a fast 46.10 followed by Lara Skorbic of Croatia in 47.43.

RIP: Paul Brunnock

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Waterford runner Paul Brunnock during the week. When I was doing a lot of marathons and ultras, I got to know Paul as he was a regular on the marathon circuit.

While Paul did a lot of the usual shorter races, it was the long distance events that he had a passion for. He completed over 100 marathons and did the Connemara 100-mile as well.

The following is from West Waterford AC...

PAUL BRUNNOCK.

It is with heartfelt sadness and shock that West Waterford Athletic Club report the untimely passing of our esteemed club member, Paul Brunnock.

Dungarvan 10 mile entries open on Wed 1st Dec 2021...

The John Treacy Dungarvan 10-mile road race will be held at the start of February next year and now is the time to look at some key dates. Note that there is a limit of 3000 entries and the entry fee is €30.

Update 2nd Dec 2021: All 3000 entries are now gone.

Back in late 2019, the 3000 entries for the 2020 race sold out in the space of 3-hours.

This time around, entries for club runners opened on the 24th of November with entries opening for everyone on the 1st of December at 7am. Even with the extended club entry, it took around 27 hours to fill the event.

Effectively it means that anyone that wants to do the Dungarvan 10 was able to enter regardless of whether they were a member of an athletics club or not.

To keep things in perspective, any race getting 3000 entries is really excellent. It's just that the level of demand is much lower than it was two years ago.

Guest Post: MICHAEL’S MANCHESTER MISSION... by John Walshe

The Manchester Road Race is a 4.748 mile ace held annually on Thanksgiving Day in Manchester, Connecticut in the USA. It is one of the most famous races in America and just over 11,000 runners have registered for the 2019 event.

MICHAEL’S MANCHESTER MISSION... By John Walshe

An article on this Blog five years ago along with a talk given at last year’s Clonakilty Waterfront Marathon were the inspiration that sees a West Waterford athlete lining up along with over 10,000 participants in this Thursday’s Manchester Road Race in Connecticut, USA.

The national American holiday of Thanksgiving Day sees many road races taking place throughout the country but there’s little doubt that Manchester is the most famous of all, having started back in 1927 when just 12 runners took part. As mentioned in that article of 2014, it has a rich Irish history. Held over the quirky distance of 4.748 miles, John Treacy won it four times between 1979 and 1985, in between Eamonn Coghlan notched up three victories while Corkman Mark Carroll has two wins to his credit.

Michael Coakley is a relative newcomer to running, having started off just two years ago. Since then, he has been a regular at most events in the Cork and Waterford areas and looks like clocking up a total of 200 races before the year’s end.

Michael Coakley at the recent Glenville 4 mile

Last December at Clonakilty he heard invited guest Amby Burfoot give a talk on the famous Manchester event. When Burfoot speaks of Manchester, he certainly knows his stuff. A nine-time winner of the race – his first victory came in 1968, the same year he won the Boston Marathon – the now 73-year-old hasn’t missed a race since 1963 and on Thursday will be taking part for the 57th consecutive time.

“I was so inspired by this talk and also the article that I decided I had to run the race,” explains Michael, a clerk-of-works at Cork County Council. “When I made contact with the race and mentioned I was Irish and also from Waterford with the Treacy connection, it just took off.”

The Manchester Road Race publishes a souvenir magazine-type programme each year and when the organisers heard of Michael’s story, they ran a full page article on him. “Rich Dyer, who wrote the article, has also invited me to the special Scholastic Athlete Luncheon on the Tuesday before the race. I must say I’m definitely overwhelmed by the hospitality shown so far without even having met any of them,” he admits.

Start of the Manchester race

Although a relative newcomer to running, Michael’s enthusiasm for the sport is infectious. “I started off with Peter Jones at Waterford Sports Partnership which I found was great to get going. I then did a Couch to 5km programme and it went on from there.” With a few marathons already under his belt, he loves racing at any distance and on Sunday last – the day before he flew out to Boston – he took part in the Great Glenville Run.

Michael will be joined later in the week by his wife Bridget, son Michael and daughter Shauna. “When I first said I was going to America to run a race, they didn’t seem that interested. But then when I mentioned that the day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday, they suddenly had a change of heart!”

No doubt, it will be a trip to remember for all of the Coakley family – and it’s worth noting where it all began.

Guest Post : JIM HONOURED FOR HIS STEWARDING SERVICES ...by John Walshe

JIM HONOURED FOR HIS STEWARDING SERVICES... by John Walshe

At last night’s GSK 5-Mile road race in Dungarvan, the penultimate event in the Intersport Elverys/Asics Summer Series, a special presentation was made to Jim Veale to mark his many years stewarding at West Waterford events.

Jim – father of James, a man so associated with athletics not only locally but on an international level – has been involved with the club since its formation back in 1994. He is an ever-regular at all the local races and in particular at the club’s famous Winter League which takes in 13 Wednesday nights from October to February.

Whatever the winter weather, be it hail, rain or snow, Jim has be there in his fluorescent jacket making sure the runners make their way in safety around the streets of Dungarvan. He is seen here receiving his presentation from Gerry Cantwell, another loyal servant and athlete with the West Waterford club over the years.
