Notice: West Waterford AC Summer Series - May to July 2026

This might be of interest to any runners in east Cork. There are six races in this years West Waterford AC Summer Series with most of them in or to the west of Dungarvan. Each race costs just €12 to enter online or €15 on the night.

We are delighted to announce our Summer Schedule of races starting in Ballinroad on the 8th May with our very popular 5k race and finishing with the Dungarvan 10k on the 17th July in another very popular 10k route with all past participants. 

This is a unique opportunity to enter all 6 races in advance and just turn up on the night to each race and run! For your €70 you will be entered into all 6 races and receive a commemorative Gilet Jacket. 

Each race can be entered separately online prior to the event for €12 but entry on the night will be €15 per race. So get your entries in quickly and be ready for a super summer of racing once more. 

Come along to West Waterford AC organised races over the summer months with Scenic coastal and countryside routes a guaranteed Friendly club atmosphere, races Ideal for all levels—from beginners to competitive runners, all Progressive distances building to a strong 10K finish in July.

Notice: Youghal AC Virtual 5-mile race series - May, June, July & August 2021

Youghal AC are holding a virtual 5-mile race series this year on the third Thursday of May, June, July and August. This is similar to the old Ballycotton Summer Series which followed the same pattern.

From Youghal AC... ' Youghal AC are pleased to bring back the old 5 Mile Race Series popular among all runners in East Cork and beyond, starting on May 20 and then the 3rd Thursday of each month finishing on 19 August. All runners will receive a T shirt with all the race dates listed, cost for 4 races and T Shirt is €20.00

For any runner who only wants to run one or two of the races this can be arranged also at a cost of €5 per race with option to buy T-shirt.

Runners will be able to run their 5 miles each month between the Thursday and Sunday all results will have to be posted to MyRunResults.com by Sunday evening.

T-shirts will be posted out in batches by date registered the week before each race date. Register early to have your t-shirt for in time for all 4 races.'

Results of the Shanagarry 5 Mile Road Race...Thurs 25th May 2009
n 2008, this race attracted 281 runners which was a record number at that time, a slight increase on the figure of 279 for 2007. For the 2009 race, they had an entry of around 471 runners which is 67% up on the 2008 figure. To have a new race grow by 67% might be fair enough but for a well establised race like this to grow by 67% is remarkable.

Where are all of the extra people coming from? It's probably fair to say that a lot must be Cork City Marathon Relay runners. If an event like that can attract several thousand runners, a lot of them will be new to the sport and of course, a percentage of these will go on to take part in other local races.

Preview of the Shanagarry 5 Mile Road Race - Thurs 26th June (8pm)

The 2nd race in the Ballycotton 5 Mile Road Race Summer Series takes place in the small village of Shanagarry in East Cork on Thursday evening at 8pm. Going on the numbers at recent races, it looks like there might be another record number.

Directions...

If you are coming from Cork, take the N25 East and from the roundabout on the Midleton bypass, take the 3rd exit and follow the main R629 Midleton to Ballycotton road. Shanagarry is located on the main road between Cloyne and Ballycotton. If you are coming from Waterford, take a left at Castlemartyr for Ladysbridge and Garryvoe and follow the road on towards Shanagarry. Parking should be available at the GAA grounds in the centre of the village. Just follow the stewards directions. See map above.

Entries...

The event centre for this race is the small boxing hall which is located between the GAA grounds and the petrol station. Inside, there will be 2 queues....

Queue 1)...Any runner who ran Race 1 of the Ballycotton Summer Series (Ballyandreen ‘5’) last month is automatically entered for Shanagarry. The race number corresponds with the runners’ finishing position in the first race. The full list, in surname order, can be seen at this LINK. Please join the correct queue in the hall and ask for your number from the list, which will also be posted on the wall.

Queue 2)...Any new runners can enter as normal. This is not a BHAA race, so if you are not a member of an athletics club just say where you are from (Cork, Charleville, Cloyne). The entry fee is €5 and having the correct amount ready helps to speed up the process. It also helps if you can try and get there early so they have plenty of time to get everyones details onto the laptop.

Course...

The race starts just outside the petrol station at the main road junction on the Ballycotton road. It then drops slightly into the hollow by the GAA entrance, up past the road junction where the finish will be, past the church, down again into another slight hollow and up a bit of a pull until the road flattens out as you head towards the 1 mile mark. A pretty fast mile with no major drags.

The 2nd mile is pretty flat. You run down to Garryvoe next to the beach, around a sharp bend and head inland again. A flat fast mile.

The 3rd mile is not so easy. It is basically a long gentle uphill section until you turn off left onto a quiet country road and the 3 mile mark. You can expect to lose some time on the long climb.

The 4th mile starts easy. The first half mile is along a flat road with a great view to the left over the East Cork countryside. At the next road junction, you take a very sharp left and then the road drops rapidly. It's almost too steep to really run on comfortably. Then it flattens out for a short section and then, you hit the hill! Not as bad as the 'Beast of Ballyandreen' but a nasty one all the same. After the initial shock, the gradient reduces as you hit the 4 mile mark. A tough mile.

For the start of the 5th and final mile, there is still a gradual climb for about 300 metres after the 4 mile mark. Then it flattens out as you negotiate a series of bends with matures trees on either side of the road providing plenty of cover. The last half mile is very fast as it is slightly downhill all the way to the finish.

Notes...

For anyone who is not joined an athletic club and is interested in doing next year's Ballycotton 10 race (March 2009), you might consider doing the Shanagarry race. For the last 2 years, if you complete at least one of the four Ballycotton Summer Series 5 Mile races, you have 2 weeks in which to enter the Ballycotton 10 once the entry forms come out. Otherwise, it can be difficult to enter. Last year, the entries for non-club runners closed in just 4 days!!

Dull, wet and dreary on Thursday. The persistent rain is currently clearing from the West (Kerry and West Cork). There is a chance that the clearance may reach East Cork by 8pm. Showers after the clearance are possible.

Results of the Ballyandreen 5 Mile Road Race - Thurs 22nd May 2008
The first race in the Ballycotton 5 mile Summer series kicked off last night in Ballyandreen in East Cork on what was a lovely Summers evening. What a difference 24 hours makes because on the previous evening, the weather was awful, cold and wet. Yet again, Ballycotton Running Promotions had everything organised to perfection, even the weather! How do they do it???

As for the race, they managed to attract a record crowd of 279 runners which is some going for a race that has been going for 25 plus years. The previous record was set 25 years ago back in 1983 when there were 271 finishers. Back then, 84 runners broke the 30 minute mark. Last night, just 20 runners got under. Reasons for the change??? People have less time?...More people just running to stay fit rather than to compete in races?...More sports to choose from?

Ballycotton Summer Series starts on Thursday, the 22nd of May...

The very popular Ballycotton Series of 5 mile road races kicks off next Thursday evening in the sleepy hamlet of Ballyandreen in East Cork. This will be the 1st of the 4 races in the series, with each race taking place on the 4th Thursday of the months of May, June, July and August. Each race usually attracts a large entry of between 200 and 300 runners. There are a wide variety of prizes on offer in each race with the much sought special T-shirts for the top 50 men and top 15 women in the overall series.
