Results & Photos of the John Treacy Dungarvan 10-mile road race - Sun 1st Feb 2026

In contrast to some previous years, the weather was stunning for this years John Treacy Dungarvan 10-mile road race with blue skies and sunshine. Almost 3000 runners took to roads for this race in west Waterford, the largest of its kind in Munster.

Despite what the final times might suggest, there was a real tussle in the men's race for first place. From my elevated vantage point, I could see that at about 9.5 miles that both Jake O'Regan and Killian Moon were running together. However as you can see from the photo I took above with about 450m to go, Jake had opened up a commanding lead on the final hill.

In the women's race, Emily Sisson from the US was the clear winner with a time of 53m 22s. Emily has a marathon best time of 2h 18m.

Looking ahead to the 2026 Dungarvan 10-mile road race - Sun 1st Feb

The big race in Munster this coming weekend is of course the John Treacy Dungarvan 10-mile on Sunday 1st of February.

Entry List... The race sold out back at the end of December 2025. The full list of the 3587 people who entered can be seen HERE

The gender split is 59% male and 41% female. 34% of the male field is under the age of 40 while 33.4% of the female field are under 40.

I think a lot of people not involved in running think that it's a sport for young adults but the reality is very different. Most of the adults in road races and in athletic clubs are in the masters category.

Entries for this race opened on the 1st of Dec 2025 to Athletics Ireland club members only and there were 1,600 in the first week. When it opened to all on the 8th of December, the overall numbers swelled to 2600 by 5pm of that day. Overall, 48.5% of the entries are non-club entries.

Course... This is the 10-mile course...

There is a small loop at the start and then the route is mostly a big loop to the west of Dungarvan.

This is the start of the race...

The white line above show how the 3000 or so runners will be spread out for the start of the race.

Once the race starts, the fast runners are off straight away but it will take a while before the back of the field will start moving. That's pretty normal and it doesn't matter because your time doesn't start until you run under the start line gantry.

However, it's important that the runners at the back stay on the right hand side of the road and clear the Collins Rd junction as soon as possible. A few minutes after the start of the race, the front of the race with cars, lead bikes and fast runners is going to come flying around the corner from Collins Road.

If you're going to use the portaloo then give yourself plenty of time. You don't want to be on the left hand side of the road a few minutes after the race has started and then find a wall of fast runners blocking you from getting to the start line.

This map shows the early and late stages of the race...

Early stages - Yellow arrows - You can see the loop at the start... then south on the Cork road until you turn right at about 1.9 miles and up a gradual hill. You then run past the finish line area... past the 3-mile mark and the start of the loop to the west.

Late stages - Pink arrows - There is a gradual climb up from the Brickey River to the 9-mile mark and then in along the flat towards Dungarvan. Before the roundabout, you turn left and up a slight hill and then around two corners to the finish line.

Overall there are a few small pulls along the route but it's a reasonably fast 10-mile route.

Weather Forecast... It looks pretty good. The isobars are well spread out so it's likely it will be cool but dry with light winds.

2026 Dungarvan 10-mile sold out

The John Treacy Dungarvan 10-mile road race is coming up on Sunday 1st February 2026 and it's the largest 10-mile event in Munster. The race is organised by West Waterford AC and all 3,750 entries for it are now sold out.

There are still places available for elite runners and the criteria is sub 55 mins for men and sub 60 mins for women. These times must be achieved in the last two years.

Analysis... Let's have a quick look...

1) We need to remind ourselves that 3,750 entries is an amazing number for what is after all a 10-mile road race in west Waterford at the start of February.

2) Entries opened on the 1st of Dec 2025 for Athletics Ireland club members and for non-club runners on the 8th of Dec 2025.

Considering that the vast majority of runners are not members of an athletics club then we can use the 8th as the de facto opening date for entries. It then took 3-weeks to sell all 3750 entries.

3) If we compare the entries for the 2026 race to entries for the 2025 race then it sold out about two to three days earlier last year.

To put this in context, we're talking about entries for a race about two months in advance so 2-3 days isn't much of a difference.

What it does suggest however is that perhaps we're not in some sort of growth phase in terms of numbers attending road races. It might suggest that numbers have indeed peaked or perhaps we might be just coming off the peak.

Notice: Dungarvan 10-mile road race - Sun 2nd Feb 2025

The biggest 10-miler in Munster is the  hugely popular John Treacy Dungarvan 10-mile road race which is organised by West Waterford AC and it's coming up on Sunday 2nd February 2025

Dates & Entries...

2) Entries for everyone including non-club runners opens on Fri 9th Dec 2024.

The entry link is https://eventmaster.ie/event/wBARCPySRQ

Info... Note that there are 3,750 spaces for this race which is a huge amount. They expanded the entry number by 25% in 2023 to cater for the demand and the new limit stays at that limit.

Remember that most runners are not members of an athletics club. Entries may have opened on the 2nd of December for club runners but the main entry is on the 9th of December.

It took 3-weeks to sell out last year so you don't need to panic. Just decide if you want to do this race and then enter reasonably soon.

The Trim 10-mile in Co Meath is on the same day and that sold out recently. That might dampen some of the demand for Dungarvan 10-mile entries from runners in Dublin.

From West Waterford AC... "West Waterford athletic club are delighted to announce that entries for our 33rd annual 10 mile event The John Treacy Dungarvan 10  entry will open online only on eventmaster.ie  on Monday December 2nd & 9th.

The event now in its 33rd year has established itself as a must run race on the Irish road running calendar with participants from all four corners of the country and beyond participating. The race has grown year on year from humble beginnings 33 years ago.

This year the organisers due to the demand for entries for the race will keep the entry number to 3,750 entries, this we hope will see all runners wishing to run the event in 2025 getting an entry to do so. Please note that this event usually sells out well before closing date so do get your entry in if you intend running on Sunday February 2nd 2025.

The John Treacy Dungrvan 10 brings together the ideal race combination of fun runners, joggers, club athletes and top class internationals who compete over a fast flat 10 mile course around the historic town of Dungarvan as we all look forward to an even bigger and better event on Sunday February 2nd next.

To stage such a big event of course requires good sponsor’s and we are fortunate to have the support many associate sponsors and many local businesses and individuals who are all giving valuable support helping to make the day a great occasion for the town of Dungarvan.

Top 10-mile races in Ireland for the Spring of 2024

For the last few months, I have been keeping an eye on the results of the 10-mile races in Ireland. You'll often see results posted on social media but it's not so obvious how big the races are and how they all  compare to each other.

With that in mind, I collected the data and here are the top ten 10-mile races in Ireland for the Spring of 2024.

As can be seen from the chart, the John Treacy Dungarvan 10-mile road race was the largest 10-miler in Ireland for the Spring of 2024 and by some margin. Before I did this exercise, I knew that the Dungarvan race was one of the biggest but I was a bit surprised to see just how far it was ahead of the rest.

The Trim 10-mile was in second place and what's surprising here was that it was actually held on the same day as Dungarvan! I suspect if they picked another date then their numbers would have been even bigger.

As can be seen from the chart, Bundoran and Derry are in 3rd and 4th places with the remaining six tailing off from about the 1000 mark.

10-mile races in Cork... If we were to go back 15 years or so, the scene for the Spring 10-milers in Munster was somewhat different. Ballycotton was king with Dungarvan second, Mallow third and the Kilnaboy 10 in Co Clare fourth.

A lot has changed since then and one of the biggest changes was when the Ballycotton 10-mile was run for the last time in 2017. With the demise of Ballycotton, the Dungarvan race has now moved into it's place as the premier Spring 10-miler in Ireland.

The chart above shows the numbers for the Spring 10-milers in Cork since 2017.

As previously mentioned, 2017 was the last outing for Ballycotton and both the Mallow and Cobh 10-milers grew substantially the next year in 2018.

In 2019, Mallow hit its zenith with roughly 1500 finishers while Cobh eased back with the Kinsale 10-mile starting up in February of that year.

When looking at the numbers, it's worth noting that both the Clondulane and Duhallow 10-milers were also in the mix pre-2020.

When the races restarted in 2022 after the pandemic, the numbers for Mallow had really taken a dip and dropped by about a third. Compared to 2019, Cobh managed to hold it's own while Kinsale eased back.

If we look at 2023 and 2024, it's a story of Mallow staying about the same and both Kinsale and Cobh growing.

If we go back a decade then Mallow was certainly the second largest Spring 10-miler in Cork after Ballycotton and by some margin. In 2024, it's now a three way race for the top Spring 10-miler in Cork.

Caveat... Note that this post is about the top 10-milers In Ireland for the Spring of 2024 i.e. February, March & April. There will be more 10-milers coming up in the Autumn and it'll be interesting to see what the chart looks like by the end of the year.

Looking ahead to the 2024 Dungarvan 10-mile road race on Sun 4th Feb

Let's have a look at some of the key points for the upcoming Dungarvan 10-mile on Sunday 4th Feb 2024

  • The race will start at 11am. Allow plenty of time to find parking, warming up and getting to the start line. Remember there are about 3000 runners so that creates quite a few bottlenecks.

  • No headphones!

  • Wear the race number on the front of your running top, nowhere else.

  • Any gear left at the START line will be bagged up straight away for recycling to charity. Don't leave anything at the start that you want again.

As for the weather, it's pretty much ideal for a road race at the start of February. There will be no rain and it's likely to be mild and overcast. The temperature will be around 11 deg C which means you can run with a singlet or a short sleeve top if you're running at a reasonable pace and putting in the effort.

There is going to be a strong westerly breeze which will be a factor in the first half of the race on the way out to the 5-mile mark. On the flipside, it's a tailwind for part of the second half.

In contrast to some previous years, this year is going to be very tame.

The main thing is to enjoy the big day out in the Déise.

2024 Dungarvan 10-mile sold out...

The 2024 John Treacy Dungarvan 10-mile road race is coming up on Sunday the 4th of February and it has now sold out.

Anyone could enter as of the 8th of December and it took just under 3-weeks to sell all 3,750 places. It took about 3-weeks as well last year to sell out so demand seems as high as ever.

It's an amazing number of entries for what is a 10-mile race in a town in west Waterford at the start of February. There are plenty of other races on the calendar but this one really stands out.

The race is 5-weeks from next Sunday.

THE KEVIN BELL REPATRIATION TRUST

West Waterford athletic club are delighted to announce our race benefactors for the 2024 John Tracy Dungarvan 10 mile road race KBRT. Monies donated by the runners and the club will be donated to this very worthy national cause. The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust aims to alleviate the financial hardship of bereaved families repatriating the body (bodies) of loved one(s) who have died abroad in sudden or tragic circumstances back to Ireland. KBRT was founded out of a family tragedy when, in June 2013, Kevin Bell died suddenly in New York. Following an outpouring of support from Kevin’s friends, family and colleagues, a significant amount of funds were raised to repatriate his remains back to Ireland.

As a permanent legacy to Kevin, the Bell family decided to use the funds to establish a charity to help other families who find themselves in a similar situation. Help comes in the form of financial support as well as advice and guidance on getting the remains of loved ones home as soon as possible.KBRT is a volunteer organisation, led by Colin Bell and a team of volunteer Trustees. KBRT is regulated by the Charity Commission in Northern Ireland (NIC100314) and Irish Charity Regulator (20102937).Since 2013, KBRT has repatriated the remains of over 1600 people back home to their families (as at January 2021)When entering the race online you will have the opportunity to donate any sum of money you wish. We ask you to be as generous as possible for this very worthy cause when entries open."

Looking ahead to the 2024 Dungarvan 10-mile road race - 4th Feb 2024

West Waterford AC recently announced that they would be holding their hugely popular John Treacy Dungarvan 10-mile road race on Sunday 4th February 2024

Update - 31st Oct 2023 : Entries will open on the 1st of Dec 2023 for Athletics Ireland club members. Entries for anyone open on the 8th of Dec.

Note that this is what happened last year.

1) They increased the number of entries to 3,750 which is a huge amount. That was a 25% increase on the previous year.

2) Members of athletic clubs could enter at the start of December. Note that most runners are not members of a club so it has no chance of selling out at this stage.

3) It opened up to everyone one week later. It then took 3-weeks to sell out.

It's worth noting that the Trim 10-mile in Co Meath is on the same day and that got 1650 runners last February. That might dampen some of the demand for Dungarvan 10-mile entries from runners in Dublin.

The key message to take away from this post is that if you're interested in doing the most popular 10-mile road race in Munster then just be aware that you will need to enter in the next few weeks. If you check for entries in January then it's likely to be closed at that stage. Just keep an eye open for news on the entries and you should have no problem getting in.

If anyone wants to be coached with a 14-wk training plan, I'll be starting Monday. Info HERE

Looking ahead to the 2023 Dungarvan 10 mile road race...Sun 5th Feb 2023

The big race in Munster this weekend of course is the Dungarvan 10 mile road race and there are well over 1000 runners from Cork making the journey.

The weather conditions for the race look like it will be mild with temperatures around 7 deg C with a gentle breeze from the south-east.

The forecast for the start of February is really about as good as it can get. Cool but not cold. A breeze but not too strong.

From miles 5 to 8, the wind will be into the face of the runners but it's not that big an issue. As it's so mild, I'd recommend a singlet or a short sleeve dry fit top. If you feel slightly cold at the start line then you're wearing just enough.

As for the course, it is the same as last year. The 'Old' in the graphics and text below refers to 2020.

First off, here is a preview of the old course which is more or less the same as the new course. The preview can be seen  here... http://munsterraceroutes.blogspot.ie/2013/03/waterford009.html

What has changed are the start and finish.

The Start...

As you can see, the start line has just moved up the road a bit so no big change.

The Finish...

This change is more substantial. On the 2020 course, runners turned off left near the 9 mile mark and ran up a hill which reached 20m ASL. Down right at the next junction... down a hill to the main road... through the roundabout ...and a sharp left to the run in to the finish line.

On the new course, runners will stay in the hard shoulder of the main road. Left at the junction before the roundabout and up a small hill... then two rights and the finish line.

The difference isn't huge but if anything, it might be slightly faster as the 20m hill is gone in the last mile.

Dungarvan 10 mile entries open on Thurs 1st Dec 2022...

The John Treacy Dungarvan 10-mile road race will be held on Sunday the 5th of February 2023 and now is the time to look at some key dates.

Update 29th December 2022: Entries for the 2023 Dungarvan 10-mile have now closed.

It's interesting to look back at the demand for this race. Entries opened on the 1st of December for club runners. It opened for everyone on the 8th of December. The number of available entries increased this year from 3,000 to 3,750, a 25% increase.

Entries closed on the 27th of December which means that anyone that really wanted to enter could do so, there was no real advantage in being a member of a club other than saving the €2 'One-Day Licence'.

Entries are still open for elite runners. From West Waterford AC... "JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN 10. IN A FEW DAYS OUR WAITING LIST WILL BE IN OPERATION AND NUMBERS WILL BE ALLOCATED ON A PRO RATA BASES AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE.

Elite entries will be accepted up to Friday 27th January 2023. The standards set down are Men 55 minutes and Ladies 60 Minutes. These times must have been posted within the last 2 years. Proof of these qualifying times may be required.
