Comparison of Cork 10-mile races - Spring 2026

The chart above shows the relative sizes of the 10-mile road races held in Co Cork in the Spring of 2026.

The chart starts in 2017 when things were very different. The largest 10-miler in Munster back then was the Ballycotton 10m with almost 3000 finishers. The Dungarvan 10m was then the second largest in Munster with just over 1900 finishers. The Mallow 10m back then was the second largest 10-miler in Co Cork and the third largest in Munster.

With the demise of the Ballycotton race in 2017, the other 10-milers got a boost in numbers. Dungarvan went on to become the largest 10-miler in Munster and now has almost 3000 finishers. The figures for 2019 show Mallow reaching an all-time high while Cobh dropped a bit with the appearance of the Kinsale 10m on the scene.

If we look at 2019 then it was a case of Mallow having a clear lead over the rest. If we fast forward to 2026 then there's not a whole lot between the top three.

Looking at the growth trajectories, the Cobh 10-mile may well become the largest 10-miler in Co Cork by the end of the decade.

New 10-mile road race in Tipperary at the end of March 2026

I've been updating the race calendar over the last few days and there are loads of races to choose from all over the country.

One new race on the calendar is the Littleton Labyrinth 10 Mile at the Horse & Jockey in Co Tipperary which is about 1km off the M8 motorway.

The race is organised by Moycarkey CoolcrooAC and the 10-mile route incorporates The Littleton Labyrinth which is a new walk and cycle way in the bog lands that were once used by Bord Na Mona.

The race starts and finishes at the Horse & Jockey hotel over a loop course as shown above and it will be held on Sunday 29th March 2026.

Results & Photos of the Midleton Greenway 10-mile race - Sun 9th March 2025

It was anyone's race at the halfway mark in the augural Midleton Greenway 10-mile but Michael Harty (130) would go on to take the win.

You couldn't have asked for nicer conditions for the inaugural Midleton Greenway 10-mile race with mild conditions and hazy sunshine. The light easterly breeze was a bonus on the return leg from Mogeely back to Midleton.

A total of 540 runners took part which is good for the first outing. Proceeds  from this event go towards a project to establish a new athletics track for the east Cork region so this event should be a regular on the calendar.

Results of the Skibbereen 5m & 10m road races - Sun 9th Feb 2025

The annual Noreen McCarthy Memorial 10-mile and 5-mile road races were held in Skibbereen in west Cork on Sunday 9th Feb 2025 on what was a dry cold day.

This event was traditionally held in November every year but the organisers decided to move it to the spring time to see how it would get on. The numbers for the 10-mile jumped 27% this year but while this sounds impressive, it's still in the ballpark of other years.

The 5-mile numbers however have been transformed with the Spring 2025 edition more than double that of the previous event in November 2023. Going just off the results for the 5-mile race alone, it looks as if the move to a spring date was a success.

Top 10-mile races in Ireland for the Spring of 2024

For the last few months, I have been keeping an eye on the results of the 10-mile races in Ireland. You'll often see results posted on social media but it's not so obvious how big the races are and how they all  compare to each other.

With that in mind, I collected the data and here are the top ten 10-mile races in Ireland for the Spring of 2024.

As can be seen from the chart, the John Treacy Dungarvan 10-mile road race was the largest 10-miler in Ireland for the Spring of 2024 and by some margin. Before I did this exercise, I knew that the Dungarvan race was one of the biggest but I was a bit surprised to see just how far it was ahead of the rest.

The Trim 10-mile was in second place and what's surprising here was that it was actually held on the same day as Dungarvan! I suspect if they picked another date then their numbers would have been even bigger.

As can be seen from the chart, Bundoran and Derry are in 3rd and 4th places with the remaining six tailing off from about the 1000 mark.

10-mile races in Cork... If we were to go back 15 years or so, the scene for the Spring 10-milers in Munster was somewhat different. Ballycotton was king with Dungarvan second, Mallow third and the Kilnaboy 10 in Co Clare fourth.

A lot has changed since then and one of the biggest changes was when the Ballycotton 10-mile was run for the last time in 2017. With the demise of Ballycotton, the Dungarvan race has now moved into it's place as the premier Spring 10-miler in Ireland.

The chart above shows the numbers for the Spring 10-milers in Cork since 2017.

As previously mentioned, 2017 was the last outing for Ballycotton and both the Mallow and Cobh 10-milers grew substantially the next year in 2018.

In 2019, Mallow hit its zenith with roughly 1500 finishers while Cobh eased back with the Kinsale 10-mile starting up in February of that year.

When looking at the numbers, it's worth noting that both the Clondulane and Duhallow 10-milers were also in the mix pre-2020.

When the races restarted in 2022 after the pandemic, the numbers for Mallow had really taken a dip and dropped by about a third. Compared to 2019, Cobh managed to hold it's own while Kinsale eased back.

If we look at 2023 and 2024, it's a story of Mallow staying about the same and both Kinsale and Cobh growing.

If we go back a decade then Mallow was certainly the second largest Spring 10-miler in Cork after Ballycotton and by some margin. In 2024, it's now a three way race for the top Spring 10-miler in Cork.

Caveat... Note that this post is about the top 10-milers In Ireland for the Spring of 2024 i.e. February, March & April. There will be more 10-milers coming up in the Autumn and it'll be interesting to see what the chart looks like by the end of the year.

Notice: Skibbereen 10-mile & 5-mile road races - Sun 19th November 2023

A 10-mile road race is often called a classic race at a classic distance as it requires both endurance and speed. There is also a 5-mile option for anyone preferring a shorter distance.

The programme is sent out every week by email and weekly feedback is required. That will determine what the programme is like for the following week.

Results of the Macroom Bypass 10-mile & 5k - Sun 27th Nov 2022

With the new Macroom bypass opening on the 8th of December, the local club West Muskerry AC organised a 10-mile and 5k road race on it today before it opened.

In the 5k race, there were 187 finishers while there were 138 in the 10-mile.

Considering it's probably a one off and unique event, I thought the 10-mile would have got more runners as it's not every day you get to run on a new bypass. The opening date for the bypass was only announced relatively recently so that may have been a factor.

Results & Photos of the Skibbereen 10-mile & 5-mile road race - Sun 20th Nov 2022

Danny Mullins (#820) wins the 2022 Skibbereen 10-mile road race in 56m 04s

The Skibbereen 10-mile & 5-mile road race was held on Sunday the 20th of November 2022. A total of 156 runners took part with 72 in the 10-mile and 84 in the 5-mile. The races were organised by Skibbereen AC.

Most of the races in 2022 have had numbers which were well down on their 2019 editions. The Skibbereen races in contrast were up an impressive 42%. The numbers at races in West Cork have declined a lot over the last decade so it's good to see one growing.
