Info on the 2018 Cork City Marathon Expo...

Latest info from the organisers...
The summer weather is currently heating up and so are preparations for the 2018 Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon, which will take place during the upcoming bank holiday weekend on Sunday 3rd June. With the main event days away, organisers are encouraging those taking part to make the most of some last-minute tips and advice being offered by professionals at the official Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon Expo on Saturday, 2nd June at Cork City Hall

The Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon Expo has become known for offering last-minute nuggets of wisdom – along with a welcome helping of pre-run inspiration – to runners that flock from far and wide to take part in this iconic race. The Expo features fitness enthusiasts across the board, from fervent runners and yoga and Pilates experts to nutritionists and more. In between talks, those in attendance will have an opportunity to peruse a variety of stands including John Buckley Sports, Step Forward Ireland, ELEV8Nutrition, the Dublin Marathon, Refill Ireland, Elite Events, IECCM Pacers, the Business Houses Athletics Association, the Sanctuary Runners and, for those feeling a little drained at the thought of the marathon, a much-needed caffeine station!

To warm up the eager crowd at this event Sian Horn, founder of Elite Pilates, Cork’s very first Reformer and Barre Pilates studio, will share her best warm up and cool down secrets with those in attendance, showing marathon runners how to stay loose and limber for the big event. So, make sure to wear your active wear and bring a mat if you have one!

As the afternoon progresses, Cork runner Alex O’Shea will be hosting a Q&A on his experience as part of the Irish Team at the European 24-Hour Running Championships, which takes place at 12.45pm. Unsurprisingly, Alex has a wealth of knowledge in this field and will be eager to answer any questions put forward by the crowd. The Ballineen ultra-runner and firefighter, who earned international acclaim in 2014 when he broke the world record for completing a marathon in full firefighter attire in only three hours and 41 minutes, is also gearing up to run a stunning 832 miles this September in aid of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, taking on 32 marathons – two per day – from September 1st to 16th.

While such professional advice will stand to all in attendance on the day, organisers are also keen to address the issue of post-marathon health, fitness and care. Luke O’Mahony, Head of Nutrition at Exceed Fitness will be on-hand from 1.30pm to share his expertise on this very subject and discuss fueling your body for the finish line and post-race for recovery. Hot on his tail at 2.15pm is Camino On The Run, who will put forward a short presentation about their 500 mile run along the Camino de Santiago as both an individual challenge and to raise funds for a friend suffering from a spinal injury.

Wrapping up the Expo at 3pm is Himalaya Yoga, who are running a yoga a class with instructor Ken Hurley putting those in attendance through the motions. With over 10 years in the health and fitness industry, the Coaching Ireland IWA-Sport accredited tutor has an infinite insight into the practice and purpose of yoga and will be on hand to share his valuable advice.

Remember, this is more than a marathon!

Race Pack Collection
For all those who have registered for the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon the next step before the start line is to collect your race pack. Relay Teams and Youth Challenge teams, only, have the option of collecting your race packs from Cork City Hall on Thursday evening, 31st May, between 4pm and 7.30pm. The purpose of the early registration for teams is to allow a team member to distribute race numbers to the rest of their team in work or school on the Friday. The main collection day is Saturday 2nd June, the day of the Expo. On this day Full, Half and any remaining Relay Reams can collect their race packs form 10am to 8pm at Cork City Hall. If you are unable to collect your race pack in person on Saturday you can nominate someone to pick it up on your behalf.  The nominated person will need to make sure they have the registration sheet with the barcode and that they know their friend/colleague’s date of birth and mobile number.
