The annual Donoughmore 7 mile road race was held on Friday the 21st of July 2017 on what was a damp evening.As can be seen from the chart above, the numbers were at their second highest ever and the race has grown consistently since 2015.

It's really is a well organised race on country roads to the north-west of Cork City....even if it is a little bit hilly ;o)

Directions...Donoughmore is located about 15 miles north-west of Cork City. If you are coming out the Ballincollig bypass or the Carrigrohane straight, look for directions for the R579 road to Nad / Banteer / Kanturk. Stay on this road for about 10 miles and keep a lookout for the turn off right to Donoughmore. Then follow the signs for Stuake. The village is about 2 miles off the R579 road. See map above.

Entries......Entries are taken at the local community hall in the village and it costs €10 which includes a Donoughmore 7 dry-fit top.

A total of 247 runners turned out for this years Donoughmore 7 mile road race on Friday the 22nd of July 2016. That represents a welcome increase of 16% in numbers compared to 2015 and is the highest figure since 2012.

The men's race was  won by Michael Corbett of St.Finbarr's AC in a time of 38:53. The first woman home was Clare McCarthy in a new course record of 39:18. Claire represented Ireland recently in the half-marathon at the European Athletic Championships in Amsterdam.

This was also the 4th race of 6 in the ongoing Ballyhoura Cork Series.

Results of the Donoughmore 7 mile road race - Fri 20th July 2012

The 2012 Donoughmore 7 mile road race this year attracted a field of 263 runners on what was a pleasant Summers evening. The mens race was won by Cillian O'Leary in a time of 37:55. The womens race was won by Claire McCarthy of St.Finbarr's AC in 42:12. Claire was part of the Irish  Cross Country team that went to Slovenia late last year where Fionnuala Britton won the Gold.

Course....First of all, it is a tough enough course. Plenty of hills but nothing too serious. Some people may find 7 miles to be a bit long but it is only three quarters of a mile beyond the 10 km distance so it's not so bad. The race is on quiet country roads and if you get a nice sunny Summers evening, there are nice views of the Boggeragh Mountains nearby.

The start line for the race is 400 metres south-east of the village.....

As you'll notice going out to the start line, the start of the race is slightly uphill. It's not an issue now so early in the race but it does make for a tough finish later on.

As you run through the village, you pass the finish line.....(note that the entrance on the left takes you to the GAA grounds and the Community Hall)...

....and the on right past the new church and the road levels out again....

In fact, a lot of the first two miles are like this...up and down small hills on small roads with fuschia hedgerows on either side.

After the two mile mark, you run downhill and join the R579 road.

There is likely to be traffic here but it's not too bad as all of the runners will be running on the left on a wide and straight road. This is the fastest part of the course as it's slightly downhill up until the 5 mile mark and the crossroads just beyond it...

The last 2 miles of the race are the real test with a largely uphill drag to the finish. There are no serious hills but you are climbing for most of it. If you have gone out too fast, this is where you'll get caught. Keep it in mind and keep something in reserve when you are doing those first 5 miles.

Overall.........a challenging race over a nice countryside circuit. Well organised and certainly one of the better races.

Results of the Donoughmore 7 Mile road race - Fri 17th July 2009
There was a fine turn out last night for the Donoughmore 7 with 290 runners taking part on what was a nice summer evening. While the numbers were not as high as they might be for say a 5k race, it was still nearly a 40% increase on last year's figure. As always, the local club put on a fine race yet again with a fine spread in the hall afterwards. In a summer full of short road races, this race for me on the nice quiet roads around Donoughmore is one of the best.

Preview of the Donoughmore 7 Mile Road Race - Fri 17th of July (8pm)
The 27th Donoughmore 7 Mile road race will be held next Friday evening at 8pm. While it is unlikely to attract the huge numbers that you might find at say a local 5k race, this one for me is one of the best on the race calendar.

So what's the attraction of this race and why would I rate it as one of the best?

1) If you look at the race calendar, there are loads of 5k, 4 mile and 5 mile races. If you miss one, you'll catch another one next week. The Donoughmore 7 is a challenging race over a unique distance.

2) While the route is tough, it is on nice quite country roads. For most of it, you are over 6-700 feet above sea level, higher than Cork Airport and you have extensive views of the local countryside.

3) The entry fee of €10 includes a 'T-shirt'. I put the T-shirt in brackets because last year, the 'T-shirt' turned out to be a proper running top rather than a typical cotton T-shirt, something you'd expect to pay €20 or more for in a sports shop.

For anyone who has not done this race before, here are the directions...

Directions...Donoughmore is about 15 miles NW of Cork City. If you are coming out the Ballincollig bypass or the Carrigrohane straight, look for directions for Nad / Banteer / Kanturk. If you follow the signposts, you should end up on the R579 road. Stay on this road for about 10 miles and keep a lookout for the turn off right to Donoughmore. The village is about 2 miles off the R579 road. See map above. If in doubt, click on the link below for the course map and zoom out and adjust to examine the route.

Course....First of all, it is a tough enough course. Plenty of hills but nothing too serious. Some people may find 7 miles to be a bit long but it is only three quarters of a mile beyond the 10 km distance so it's not so bad. The race is on quiet country roads and if you get a nice sunny Summers evening, there are nice views of the Boggeragh Mountains nearby.

The first 2 miles or so are on a nice quite narrow country road. A few little drags but nothing bad. The next 2.5 miles are along the R579 road which can be busy but the road is mostly wide and straight so it should be ok. There is a lot of downhill running here so expect it to be fast. The last 2 miles of the race are the real test with a largely uphill drag to the finish. There are no serious hills but you are climbing for most of it. If you have gone out too fast, this is where you'll get caught. Keep it in mind, keep something in reserve when you are doing those first 5 miles.

They usually get about the 200 mark at this race. Entry fee is €10 but for that, you get a 'T-Shirt' and there is an impressive array of prizes on offer for all the different categories. Last year, they got 208 entries (2007=218) and if the weather is fine, they should set a new record this year.

Overall.........a challenging race over a nice countryside circuit. Not to be missed.

Results of the Donoughmore 7 Mile Road Race - Fri 18th July 2008
A total of 208 runners turned out for this popular race in Donoughmore on what was a lovely Summers evening. It has been a number of years since I last ran this race so while I had a rough idea of the course, I had forgotten a lot of it.There is no doubt about it but it is a tough course. Those last 2 miles are a real test as you have to climb all of the way from the crossroads on the main road. But having said that, those hills are exactly what makes the course interesting. This was no 5k sprint, it was a race where you needed pace and stamina to get a good time. In a Summer full of short races, the Donoughmore 7 stands out as one of the best races of the season.

Preview of the Donoughmore 7 Mile Road Race - Fri 18th of July (8pm)

The 26th Donoughmore 7 Mile road race will be held next Friday evening at 8pm. For anyone who has not done this race before, here are the directions...

Directions...Donoughmore is about 15 miles NW of Cork City. If you are coming out the Ballincollig bypass or the Carrigrohane straight, look for directions for Nad / Banteer / Kanturk. If you follow the signposts, you should end up on the N579 road. Stay on this road for about 10 miles and keep a lookout for the turn off right to Donoughmore. The village is about 2 miles off the N579 road. See map above. If in doubt, click on the link below for the course map and zoom out and adjust to examine the route.

Course....From what I remember of it, it is a tough enough course. Plenty of hills but nothing too serious. Some people may find 7 miles to be a bit long but it is only three quarters of a mile beyond the 10 km distance so it's not so bad. The race is on quiet country roads and if you get a nice sunny Summers evening, there are nice views of the Boggeragh Mountains nearby. They usually get about the 200 mark at this race. Entry fee is €10 but for that, you get a T-Shirt and there is an impressive array of prizes on offer for all the different categories. Last year, they got 218 entries and if the weather is fine, they should get a similiar number if not greater this year.

It look like they got a big crowd of 277 runners for this road race from Waterford City to the seaside town of Tramore in East Waterford. You can find the official results here.

For anyone prepared to travel as far as the Eastern half of Waterford County, there is a 7 mile road race going from Waterford City to the seaside town of Tramore.

I don't have a whole of info on this race except for the following...

Waterford to Tramore 7 mile road race....starting at City Hall Waterford 7.30 pm....finishing at Majestic Hotel Tramore.....entry 8 euro,changing and showers Tramore GAA club house....Teas and Sandwiches and prize presentation in GAA club house.

Hi John, just some updated info on this race. The registration is in Waterford itself and runners have to make their own way back to Waterford after the race as there are no buses laid on.
