From West Waterford AC..."This is a point to point race starting in Kilmacthomas. The headquarters
for the race will be the Hall in Ballinroad close to where the race
will finish. We will provide a limited amount of transport from
Ballinroad to the start line or you can organise your own. We will not
be arranging transport back to Kilmacthomas after the race."

Races this weekend...Dungarvan 10k - Sun 26th Feb 2012
With just over one week to go to the Ballcotton '10', it's a quite weekend in Cork itself with no races. However, West Waterford AC are holding their annual 10k road race in Dungarvan which might be of interest to runners in the east of Cork and elsewhere in Munster.
The entry fee is €8 and the race hq is the local Sports Centre as used for the Dungarvan 10 mile back in January. The race starts and finishes near the finishing spot for the Dungarvan 10 and uses much of the same route. The only real difference is that there is no loop through the town and it's mostly on quiet country roads. As with the 10 mile version, this 10k course should produce some fast times.
It starts at 11am.

Guest Article - Setting Good Example...West Waterford's Nightime League
The article below was written by John Walshe and appeared in the Irish Runner magazine back in 2005. It is republished here with their kind permission. Even though the article is some seven years old, I believe that it is still as relevant today as it was back then. At present, there are a number of evening winter leagues taking place mainly in east Munster. I have details of these up on the Running in Munster website...just look for the series adverts on the right hand side of the page. These could be replicated in any large town or city in the country with a bit of planning. Evening leagues are suitable for new and experienced runners alike. If you are in a position to help start one in your area next winter, you might give it some thought...
West Waterford's Allrounder League is a proven winner and a template could be copied countrywide.
"We must tell the whole country about this, why can't every town have one?" The enthusiasm of West Waterford AC Chairman James Veale, is palpable as he talks about the sight of 340 runners heading off on a dreary November night around the streets of Dungarvan, reflective bibs shining in the darkness.
The Allrounder Winter League takes place every Wednesday night from early November to the end of February, with just a short break at Christmas, making it 15 weeks in total., Started ten years ago with just seven runners, its phenomenal growth has mirrored that of the West Waterford club itself, playing a significant role in their rise to become one of the most vibrant athletic clubs in the country.
"I suppose a whole combination of things has contributed to making it so successful," muses Veale as he tries to come to terms with the huge organisational input the League now requires. "The coverage in the local newspapers has a lot to do with it. Our two papers here in Dungarvan - The Leader and The Observer - give two or three pages a week to the club and we also advertise it in many of the local factories."
There is a choice of two distances each week, a 2.7-mile catering for beginners and a 6-mile for the established runners. After the first night, a handicap system comes into operation, with the slowest person each week going off first the following week. First across the line is awarded one point, and so on down the line. The person with the lowest number of points at the end of the league is the winner. After Christmas, both leagues are divided into several divisions to sustain everyone's interest.
"It's just €2 for members of the club each night and €3 for non-members". explains James Veale. "This year, people are travelling from a wide area and now a similar league has commenced in Waterford City, such is the interest."
Dungarvan Sports Centre serves as the league headquarters. Out on the road, up to 20 stewards are required, with another 12 to 15 at the finish looking after car parking and entries and recording numbers and times.
"A lot of the helpers wouldn't be members of the club; some of them having been roped in over the years. They give great commitment - even my own father has been there since day one," says Veale. This year, in the interest of safety, a new long route was devised consisting of a two-mile out and back with a loop around St.Augustine's College in the middle.
The times at the finish are recorded by Noel O'Doherty; no mean feat with over 70 runners a minute coming in at the peak. The results are compiled on computer, with handicap times deducted from finishing times. Full results appear on the club's website and in the local papers within a week.
It was back in 1994 that Tony Ryan first established the Allrounder Winter League. "I remember we used to meet at the Dungarvan Crystal Centre and had seven runners the first night, increasing to around 23 by the end of the winter. The format was the same as today, culminating in the Mystery Tour and prize-giving night."
The famous Mystery Tour was another of Ryan's innovative ideas. "On the last Friday in February we head off on a bus tour to a pub, the destination of which is known to only two people. Here we present all the various prizes for the league, including the leading people in each of the divisions.
"The key to the success of the Winter Leagues is that people realise you don't have to be a good runner to take part. Also, the handicap system gives everyone a chance of actually finishing first."
"If some body like the Irish Sports Council started one of these in every county in Ireland, in ten years time you could imagine the impact it would have," concludes Ryan.
It's certainly a suggestion that maybe John Treacy, Chairman of the Irish Sports Council and one of Tony Ryan's contemporaries from his own juvenile athletic days, should consider.

Medal prospect for the future?.....RTE interview with Kate Veale
Last week on the RTE Six-One News programme, there was an interview with the 16 year old racewalker Kate Veale from West Waterford. She finished 4th in the Youth Olympic games in Singapore this year in a 5k race and surely has a great future ahead of her.
The interview can be still be seen on the RTE website but only until today, Tuesday the 7th.

East meets West...Ardmore 5 mile road race - Fri 15th Aug (7:30pm)
Ardmore is just off the N25 Cork to Waterford road. Just look for the signposts a few kms after the Youghal bypass. Note that the start time is 7:30pm, not 8pm!! Here is some more info on the race...
If you look through the results of the shorter road races (10km or less) around Munster, it's obvious that the vast majority of the runners are locals. In general, most people wont make a long trip to take part in a short race.
Here in Cork during the Summer, we have had a race every week, sometimes even more than one per week. Next door in Waterford, they also have had a busy Summer of road races.
This week, it just so happens that there are no local races in Cork and the Waterford guys are holding their race in Ardmore in West Waterford, just beyond Youghal. So, it presents a unique situation where East meets West, a race in West Waterford that is easy to get to from Cork.

Preview of the Touraneena 5km road race - Mon 2nd June (7:30pm)For anyone not taking part in the Cork City Marathon or Relay, there is a 5 km road race in Touraneena in West Waterford later on Monday evening at 7:30pm. This small village is located roughly halfway between Dungarvan and the town of Clonmel.
Directions...
From Cork, take the Youghal bypass and the bridge over the Blackwater. A few miles after that, look for the turn off left for Clashmore (R671). Just stay on this road, accross the main N72 road and carry on towards Clonmel. Look for signs for Touraneena. An alternative route would be to go as far as Dungarvan and take the road for Clonmel.
James Veale of West Waterford AC supplied the following information...
"There's a 100 meter hill to the finish line as you come back into the village, but it would be considered a flat course. Coming from Cork, going through Clashmore, keep on the road for Clonmel, two miles of the race are on the Clonmel-Dungarvan road and the village Touraneena is off the Clonmel road which will be well signposted.

Thanks John for providing this info, I had no idea this was on, appreciate you putting this up as I know you mainly concentrate on Cork events. Will have a go at this one....John Dunphy, Rising Sun AC"
Hi John, just some updated info on this race. The registration is in Waterford itself and runners have to make their own way back to Waterford after the race as there are no buses laid on. Info supplied to me by the chairman of West Waterford AC, hope this is of some help to you....John Dunphy, Rising Sun AC.
Thanks for the update John. It looks a bit like the Marine climb in Dungarvan in that you have to make your own way back to the start in that one as well.....John Desmond"

Results of the Dungarvan 'Marine Climb' 10k road race - Fri 19th April 2008
As to be expected, this was mainly an event for West Waterford AC members but there were a few Cork runners in there as well. They seemed to have got a fine turnout with over 200 taking part. If anyone needs the results, click on this LINK.

Preview of the 10 km 'Marine Climb' Road Race - Fri 18th Apr 7pmFor anyone interested in making the trip down to Dungarvan, West Waterford, this road race takes place tonight at 7pm. The official blurb for the race is...
The 16th Annual Marine Climb, race 1 in Ger Wyley/Nike summer series. Entries at St.Josephs Primary school Mitchell St from 6 pm.race sarting at 7 pm. Entry for race 8 Euro. Entry to series also 8 euro. 25 euro Nike voucher to all athletes who complete 6 of the 10 race series. Teas, sandwiches and prize presentation in Marine Bar, social night with music.
I did this race several years ago. From what I remember, the sign on and start is right in the middle of the town of Dungarvan itself. The race heads back out out of the town along the main road towards Cork. It then swings off left for Ring. Soon, the 'climb' part starts in the race as you slowly work your way uphill through a series of country roads. I remember when I did it, I was waiting for the turn off back towards the town as we seemed to be constantly running away from Dungarvan. When I got to about 4 miles, I began to have to wonder if we were ever going to make our way back. In fact, you don't!! I had assumed that the 'Marine Climb' was a hilly loop course near the sea. In fact, it's a point to point race and the 'Marine' part refers to the 'Marine Bar' at the top of the hill on the Cork/Dungarvan road where the finish is.
As it turned out, someone very kindly gave me a lift back to Dungarvan but keep it in mind if you doing it. I don't think there are any buses or anything like that. It's up to you to make your own way back to Dungarvan.
With the hills, it's certainly not a course for fast times but most of the race is on quiet country roads.

New Poll on the Dungarvan 10 mile road race...Considering that I ran a poll on the blog for the Mallow race, I asked the guy's in West Waterford AC if there was any question that they would like to ask in a poll for their race. The question that they wanted an answer to was whether people thought the race was value for money. So, here is the question that I put together...
" This year for the Dungarvan 10, they gave a goody bag, special T-shirt and a very nice glass momento out at the race. Do you think the entry fee was worth it? "
You can select Yes, it was worth it ...OR... No, it was not worth it
The poll is over on the right hand side of this page so give them some feedback and get clicking!

Results of the Dungarvan 10 Mile Road Race - Sun 3rd Feb 2008Looks like the weather forecast was spot on for this one with an awful wet morning followed by some dry clear cold weather. The race started in dry conditions and the weather was probably ideal for a 10 mile race.
Things were a bit chaotic at the registration with a queue going way out the door and some runners not getting their goody bags and t-shirt. Perhaps they would have been better off giving out these at the finish line as they had advertised on the entry form. It seems a pity considering they were charging €20 to enter on the day. (It was only €10 for the Mallow 10 race).
Just 2 shy of 700 runners turned out for this race, about 35% up on last years figure of 516. Yet again, another record crowd at a race. It would make you wonder what kind of crowd would the Ballycotton 10 race get if they didn't have to restrict the numbers due to safety reasons. As for todays race, the West Waterford guys had plenty of stewards out along the course so it was very safe at all of the road junctions. Due to the wet morning, there was a lot of suface water but nothing too serious. I did however hear of 1 runner who came a cropper after standing on some loose stones out along the course. Maybe that is something that could be checked for the day before next year?
Anyway, enough waffle! ...onto the results.
The link for the results is HERE.

"All comments welcome good or bad. We had 700 goodie bags and t shirts with two goodie bags and two t shirt left over after regristration, John don't know what happened but you seem to be the only runner who got no T shirt or goodie bag. You also forgot to mention the glass gift to all participants who finished the race. I would have considered the runners got very good value in Dungarvan for their 15 euro, especially those who pre regristered. We gave out the goodie bags and t shirts before the race due to the bad weather conditions, which as you said later thankfully cleared up....James Veale, West Waterford AC "

"James...I hope I didn't sound too critical of the race but I was told by some of the race officials by the finish after the race that anyone who arrived late didn't get anything. €15 is fine but in my own personal opinion, €20 on the day is a bit much when you consider that the entry fee for the very successful 'Mallow 10' was only €10 and only €12.50 for the Ballycotton 10. Overall though, I thought it was a very good race, nice course, well organised (with a few blips!!) and I'm sure we'll all be back to help you break that 700 mark next year.....John Desmond"
"Great race. I made the trip down from Dublin on the day and was not disappointed. I thought that the organisation was superb, the marshalling on the course was faultless. Granted, I had pre-registered, so avoided having to queue up to collect number and goodie-bag. €15 entry fee was good value in my opinion, and I will likely return next year. Well done to the organising team at West Waterford!...anonymous "
"I thought it was a great event really well organised and the glass gift is a lovely reminder of the day. The atmosphere and comraderie was great in spite of the bitter cold. The marshalls support en route was much appreciated. Had to elbow my way through supporters and some runners on their cool down jog to get to the finishing line which was a bit frustrating, but apart from that, was really impressed. Thanks to all involved for the obvious effort that went into the day...anonymous"
"The race was excellent, really enjoyed it and will be back again. Excellent web site .... Victor"
"It would be hard to find fault with this race. My experience of West Waterford AC is that they are a club that do their best to ensure their events go as well as possible. Runners also have a responsibility to ensure they arrive in plenty of time before races, given the increasing numbers races are now attracting. As runners, we should recognise that in a way we have the easier task. We arrive, run the race, drink tea and head home...HB"
"John, firstly - well done on the blog, it has become my first point of reference for running news around Cork! Second - I think that the race organisation on Sunday was fantastic when you take account of the dramatic increase in numbers participating. There was a late arrival of runners and yet we were off withun five minutes of the published start time. I know of no-one who had a bad word to say on the event, the hot drink after and the weather management, well done West Waterford! ....Eamonn"
"Thanks to all at West Waterford AC. Great day out, fantastic turn out. I struggled to cross the finishing line with so many people in the way, but fair play to the stewards, they were shouting their heads off to get people out of the way. It was understandable as I almost finished last. People probably thought it was all over before I came around the bend. Bring on Ballycotton, looking forward to this one...John Dunphy, Rising Sun AC"
"I thought the race was very well organised. I didn't have a problem with queues or lack of goodie bags bags, having pre-registered. Anybody who has been running long enough, should know well enough at this stage to turn up early for events!! The course marshalling was excellent with sufficient water stops. The gift at the end was a very nice suprise! The run in to the finish line could have been managed a little better, maybe by actually taping off the last 100 meters, after you round the corner. I'm not sure if this is possible but it would have made it a little easier for runners and spectators alike. All in all, a great day and well worth €15....anonymous"
"In response to this last comment, the problems that I saw happened 30 minutes before the start of the race and the person who was last to enter should be treated the exact same as the first person through the door...John Desmond"
"As one of the people to turn up on the day having not pre-registered, I must say that I thought the whole day was very well organised. The queue was quickly dealt with and I thought the €20 was good value for money. The glass momento was a very nice touch. All in all, a great day. The one suggestion I would have is taping off the finishing area more. I stayed on to cheer others to the finish after I was done but I noticed a lot of people walking across the finishing area. As someone said previously, we should respect those who come in last as much as those in first. Otherwise great day and thanks to West Waterford AC for the hospitality....Terry H."
"Lovely run. They said it was a fast course and I have to agree. Blessed with the weather considering the weekend that had preceded it. The only problem I saw was the parking which in fairness wasn't that bad. Did they make the numbers out of old bullet proof vests?.....Dave H."
Anymore comments on the race...???

Preview of the Dungarvan 10 Mile Race - Sun 3rd Feb 2008 (1pm) (Updated Sun 3rd Feb 10am) The 2nd race of the 4 part Munster 10 mile Classic series takes place next Sunday, the 3rd of February in Dungarvan, West Waterford. With over 500 runners taking part in the 1st race in Mallow in early January, the 2nd race in Dungarvan has the potential of attracting an even bigger entry. Last year, they got 516 entries and if the weather co-operates, I see no reason why they won't break the 600 mark.
Registration...
The registration point for this race is the Crystal Sports Centre which is just off the main N25 road in Dungarvan. The race starts at 1pm so considering the big numbers, you would really need to be there by 12 noon to make sure you're not rushing. Entries on the day cost €20. If you want to have a look at the entry form, here is the LINK. If you are not sure where the Sports centre is, then read on.

Course...
The race starts just a few hundred metres West of the Sports centre. You run back towards the Sports centre, then out and left onto the N25 for a short distance. Soon, you leave the N25 again, do a loop around to the West and you end up back near where the race started. Here, you are just following the stewards directions until you get onto the nice quiet roads around the 2 mile mark. The next 4.5 miles for me, are the best part of the course. Nice quiet roads with nothing much except trees and fields on either side.
Just before the 7 mile mark, you re-join the N25 main road again. Now, you are running inside the hard shoulder and you begin a long but gentle climb after the 7 mile mark. After the 8 mile mark, the hard shoulder gets a bit narrow so you need to be careful here. From then on, just follow the stewards instructions as you get closer to the finish. Just a quick word about the finish...last year, it was in the Sports centre where you registered. That is, it is about 40 metres in off the main road. Check it out when you register so you know exactly where the finish of the race is.
There are 2 maps available of the course....
I have put the course up on the MapMyRun website (as shown up top). Here is the LINK and just zoom IN and OUT to get your bearings.
West Waterford AC have an ordnance surveymap up on their website with the course. You can't zoom in or out but you might find it a little clearer. The Crytsal Sports centre is also shown there. Here is the LINK.
Weather Forecast...(Updated Sun 3rd Feb 10am)The current forecast looks like Sunday will be hit or miss when it comes to the rain. It now looks like a cold front will arrive very early on Sunday morning and there will be a few hours with a lot of rain and high winds. I think that it will probably be ok for the race. I reckon you could look out the window tomorrow morning around 9am and see heavy rain with strong Southerly winds. According to the map above, they expect the worst of the weather to have cleared by mid-day. Once this front has cleared, there might be the odd shower with a light Westerly breeze. Honestly, I think if you put off going to Dungarvan because it looks wet tomorrow morning, you'll be making a mistake. The only thing you can really be sure of tomorrow is that the day will improve as it goes on. By the way, they are predicting that the temperature might only be around 6 deg C around the time of the race. It might be no harm to bring a thermal vest and gloves just in case.
See the rainfall radar map below...it is now clearing from the West and the start of the race should be ok.
So, keep those fingers crossed ;o)
