Bantry AC announced yesterday that the Mealagh Valley 10 mile road race in West Cork will not take place in 2017.
As the chart shows, it was doing pretty well in the early years but like a lot of other races in West Cork, the numbers have dropped in recent years. The 2016 figure was particularly low despite the face that it was a sunny day in contrast to the rain in 2015.
Maybe it will a re-appearance again but for now, there will be nothing in 2017.

Results of the Mealagh Valley 10 mile road race...Sun 22nd Feb 2015
It looked early on this morning that conditions for this race were going to be pretty wet with high winds and driving rain. It may have been enough to deter some people from traveling but the heavy rain cleared the south-west of the country by race time.
Just remember when you are looking at the results, this is probably one of the hardest 10 mile road races in the country. As you can see, Elton Heffernan won it but his time of 58:10 would probably be 2-3 minutes quicker on a flatter course.
1 58:10 HEFFERNAN, Elton Togher AC M 05:48.9
2 58:32 CORBETT, Michael St. Finbarrs AC M 05:51.1

Reminder...Mealagh Valley 10 mile & 5k next Sunday 22nd Feb 2015
Just a reminder that the Mealagh Valley 10 mile road race near Bantry in West Cork is coming up next Sunday the 22nd of February. While it is certainly one of the most challenging 10 mile courses out there, it is really a well organised event with all the local community getting involved.
There is also a 5k run if someone wants to run the shorter distance. It's a small bit hilly ;o) ......but it's almost impossible to find a flat course in this area.
You can pre-enter or enter on the day.
More info including previews of both courses in this earlier post.

Another great day with Bantry AthleticClub and the Mealagh Valley Community
Fantastic day today in the Mealagh - great buzz, great competition and great grub Well done to all involved - both organisers and participants. As usual we got lucky with the weather and had some lovely sunshine after a bitter start to the day. We were delighted to welcome all those who travelled to compete in what has been described as the toughest 10 miler in the country but of course we are especially proud of our home winner Alan O'Shea, Bantry AC. It was great to see all the young people from Coláiste Pobal Bheanntraí out and active, remembering their friend Rachel along with the footballers from St Colums taking on a very tough cross valley 5k. The treasure hunt was a big hit with the u12s. It appears that between the three events, the catering, stewarding and general supporting almost everyone from the Mealagh took part today. What a great community. Go raibh fada buan sibh!

Reminder...Mealagh Valley 10 mile road race & 5k fun run - Sun 9th Feb 2014
Just a reminder that this 10 mile road race is coming up near Bantry next Sunday.
Here is some info from Geraldine O'Sullivan of Bantry AC, one of the organisers of the race...
A 10 miler with a difference, challenging hilly course set in the beautiful Mealagh Valley in West Cork. Located a few miles outside of Bantry in a quiet scenic rural area. A place where old Irish hospitality still remains....a cead mile failte that has to be experienced to be believed.
A course not for the fainthearted....BUT once you've completed the ordeal and drawn your breath you may well decide to come back the following year to try to beat your time! Which seems to be the attraction of Mealagh Valley Ring .
Some fast downhills but then you have the uphills.....some are beasts ..but some nice flat sections in first half where you have lovely views across the valley...and into second half you are running opposite side which has ups and downs....described as a rollercoaster ride!!!
Running the Mealagh is not about personal best times but it's a really good challenge, surprises around every corner.
An experience worth trying once at least!
Renowned for it's post race gathering....a feast for all...banter and stories of the day.
More info on the event in this earlier post.

Results of the Mealagh Valley 10 mile road race...Sun 12th Feb 2012
Race director Geraldine O'Sullivan of Bantry AC with the race winners Alan O'Shea of Bantry AC and Maura Regan of Eagle AC. Proceeds from the race went towards local community projects and a Cystic Fibrosis unit in CUH.
Blue skies and sunshine greeted the runners to the Mealagh Valley and this 10 mile road race in west Cork. At times in the sun, it felt more like mid-April rather than mid February and a complete contrast to all of the snow and ice in the east of England just a few hundred kms to the east.
This was the third running of this particular event and it has re-affirmed it's status of the hardest 10 mile road race in the country! The first year I did this race, the hills were a complete shock ;o) The second year, I kind of remembered some of them but forgot that there were so many. This year, I knew exactly what lay ahead but it didn't make it any easier! Up and down and up and down.....certainly not a course for personal best times but it is what it say's it is...a challenge. A lot of the faces that were there last year were back again this year so they must be doing something right! ;o) It really is a unique race with a great community spirit set in a hidden corner of west Cork.
Results......The winner of the men's race was Alan O'Shea of Bantry AC in a time of 53:28, about three minutes slower than his time in Dungarvan two weeks earlier which shows just how tough the course was. In the ladies race, the winner was local Maura Regan of Eagle AC in a time of 69:25

Preview of the Mealagh Valley 10 Mile Road Race - Sun 12th Feb 2012
If you haven't entered this race then you can still enter on the day for €20. Proceeds from the race are going to local schools in the community and towards a Cystic Fibrosis unit in CUH in Cork City.
Getting there...The Mealagh Valley is a secluded area a few kms to the north-east of Bantry in west Cork. If you are travelling from say near Cork City then you need to allow plenty of time to get to Bantry....say 1h 30m and then another 15 mins or so to get to the parking area.
The easiest way to get there is probably via Bandon....Enniskeane....Dunmanway....Drimoleague....Bantry.
Directions from Cork : When you arrive in Bantry, follow the road for Glengarriff to the outskirts of the town and past Caseys filling station. Take next right at Donemark bridge...
Once you turn off right, you stay on this narrow road for about 8 kms. Just keep going straight.
Directions from Kerry : As you approach the outskirts of Bantry, follow N71 passing the golf club on the right. After a long bend in the road, take the next left and follow the road as above.
Parking........They will have special areas set aside for parking. Follow the stewards instructions on the day.
Please note! There is no need to go to the Community centre before the race. They will be taking entries at Cronin's Yard which is approx 200 metres from the start line. The entry fee is €20 and the last time for entries is 11:30am. If you have pre-entered then you can collect your race number at Cronin's Yard from 10am on. The race will start at 12 noon.
Note that walkers and wheelchairs will start at 11am!
Bag drop........They will also have van at the start line if you want to leave your warm up top or a bag in it. This will be waiting at the Community Centre when you finish.
Course...The Mealagh Valley is a lovely quiet scenic spot for a race. It does however come at a price in that the course is very hilly. It's certainly not a race to set a 10 mile PB but it should be considered as more of a challenge.
The start is on a narrow road as shown above but with the reasonable small numbers, that's not really an issue. You're straight into a hill from the start as you run up a slight hill and past the entrance to Cronins Farm.
From there, the road drops rapidly on the other side into a long downhill section. At the end, the road twists and turns in a series of short uphill and downhill sections until you come to the community centre.
Note that the finish line is just outside the centre. When you are finishing the race, you will be covering this part of the course again.
But first time around, you keep going! Past where the finish line will be and into another downhill section until you get to a narrow bridge over the Mealagh River which gives the valley it's name.
This is the lowest part of the course and just after the bridge, you come to the 1 mile mark. From here, the next 600 metres or so are really tough. It's all uphill but it changes from gradual to short steep secions and back again. The hardest part of the course is just before you reach the local primary school.....
If it looks steep then that's because it is! This is a really steep section but it's pretty short. At the top, you join another road...
The road now changes into a relatively flat section which will give you a chance to recover from all of that climbing. You are basically running along a road above the valley floor with a nice view of the surrounding area. It's not that the road is dead flat or anything like it but it is easier than the initial two miles. As you head up the valley, the road climbs but starts to drop after the 5 mile mark as you come to the next road junction...
From here, you are heading back down the valley again with views of the mountains of the Beara Peninsula way off in the distance. You might think at this stage that since you are heading back down the valley, it might get easier. Dream on! You get to around 7 miles and there is another long hill. Nothing drastic but still slow going.
Eventually, you get some fast downhill sections...
...and you eventually turn left and retrace your footsteps from the start towards the finish line.
Overall.....probably the toughest 10 mile road race in the country but it's a great spot when the weather is nice. As the organisers say, it's got everything except flat sections ;o)
The race director is Geraldine O'Sullivan and she can be contacted on 087 6173376 if you have any questions.
Bay Run Half-Marathon.....Please note that if you are interested in doing the Bay Run Half-Marathon from Glengarriff to Bantry on the 6th of May, there is a 20% discount to anyone taking part in the Mealagh Valley race by use of a special discount code.

Results of the Mealagh Valley 10 Mile Road Race - Sun 13th Feb 2011
This was the 2nd year of this challenging 10 mile road race. It looked a bit ominous for a while before the race when a heavy 20 minute rain and hail shower drenched the valley but by the time of the start, the sun had re-appeared and conditions for the race were fine.
In total, there were 180 finishers which is down on last years figure of 217 but considering that there was a BHAA cross country race in the city and a Munster Senior cross country race in Co.Clare today as well, perhaps a bit of a drop was to be expected.
Having done this race last year, I had remembered where all of those tough hilly sections were. This year, I got re-acquainted with all of the smaller ones in between that I had forgotton about! What a course...up...down...up...down.....If you had to compare it to say the Dungarvan 10 then you would have to say that the Dungarvan course is as flat as a pancake in comparison. The Mealagh Valley isn't a course for setting PB's or fast times but what a spot for a race! It's a really nice secluded valley in the heart of west Cork.
Considering how hilly it was, some fine times were still posted. The winner of the mens race was George Waugh who ran a time of 55:46. George is in training for the busy racing season ahead having had a very successful 2010 season by winning the Limerick City Marathon, the Great Island 10 Mile road race in Cobh and the Clonakilty Marathon in December.
The ladies winner was Maureen Harrington of Riocht AC who made the trip from Co.Kerry to run 70:14 and retain her title.

Preview of the Mealagh Valley 10 Mile Road Race, Bantry...Sun 13th Feb 2011
There are 2 races on next Sunday, the 13th of Feb. You have a choice of a 10 mile road race near Bantry in West Cork or the Cork BHAA Cross Country race in Beaumont, Blackrock in Cork City.
Preview of the Mealagh Valley 10 Mile Road Race...
First of all, the main thing is that you can still enter this race. Due to the narrow roads and restricted parking, the organisers had intended to set a limit of 300 runners. With that in mind, they were taking postal entries only. As of Wednesday, they had got almost 170 entries. They have decided now to take entries on the day up to 11:30am at the latest.
Getting there...
The Mealagh Valley is a secluded area a few kms to the north-east of Bantry in west Cork.
Take the next left and follow road as above to race start and parking.
They will have special areas set aside for parking. Follow the stewards instructions on the day.
Please note! There is no need to go to the Community centre before the race. They will be taking entries at Cronin's Yard which is approx 50 metres from the start line. The entry fee is €15 and the last time for entries is 11:30am. If you have pre-entered then you can collect your race number at Cronin's Yard from 10am on. The race will start at 12 noon.

Course...
The Mealagh Valley is a lovely quiet scenic spot for a race. It does however come at a price in that the course is very hilly. It's certainly not a race to set a 10 mile PB but it should be considered as more of a challenge.
The start is on a narrow road as shown above. There is a slight climb before the road drops rapidly and then levels out. Soon it drops again and you reach the 1 mile mark. After that, you start to climb again and it seems to get steeper and steeper until the worst section just before the t-junction. It's probably no exaggeration to say that some people will walk this section!
The only way is up...
You might think at this stage that since you are heading back down the valley, it might get easier. Dream on! You get to around 7 miles and there is another long hill. Nothing drastic but still slow going. Eventually, you get some fast downhill sections and you eventually turn left and retrace your footsteps from the start towards the finish line.
Overall.....probably the toughest 10 mile road race in the country but it's a great spot when the weather is nice. As the organisers say, it's got everything except flat sections ;o)
The race director is Geraldine O'Sullivan and she can be contacted on 087 6173376 if you have any questions.
The route can be seen in closer detail on MapMyRun
By the way...watch out for the plane in the field!
