Sonia O’Sullivan takes Nike coaching role in Oregon

A recent Irish Times article by Ian O'Riordan reported on how the 2000 Olympic silver medalist over 5,000 metres Sonia O'Sullivan is taking up an assistant coaching role with Nike for the run up to the Tokyo Olympics.

In the interview, Sonia O'Sullivan said... “It all evolved quite quickly, and once we started talking, it felt like an instinctual decision for me, something I felt I’d like to do. I won’t know what it’s fully about until I’m out there, but to be a part of a fully professional set-up, with a good budget behind them, to get the best possible out of the athletes, is something I’m excited about”.

Sonia O'Sullivan receives East Cork & District Sports Award

SONIA O’SULLIVAN RECEIVES EAST CORK & DISTRICT SPORTS AWARD

...by John Walshe

Awards are nothing new to Sonia O’Sullivan over the past two-and-a-half decades but today the Cobh native was honoured in her own native area when she received the East Cork & District Sports Award at a function in the Midleton Park Hotel.

Organised by Sean O’Sullivan and sponsored by the Midleton Park Hotel in association with Cork’s Red FM, Sonia was described by the organiser as being an outstanding ambassador for many decades, both as an athlete and since her retirement from the sport.

Describing her as the ‘Cobh’s People’s Champion, Sean O’Sullivan said it was a chance meeting with Sonia on George’s Quay in Cork that led to his dream of honouring the Olympic silver-medallist and world champion for her various achievements and thanked her for returning to her roots to accept the award.

In reply, Sonia said she was delighted to be present and said it brought back many memories of receiving various awards in the past. Describing Midleton as ‘a short hop from Cobh’, she said there was a time when it seemed a long way away – no doubt recalling her schooldays when her athletic career commenced with cross-country races in nearby Ballyannon and track events in the Midleton CBS field.

On the previous day, Sonia had taken part in her first Olympic distance triathlon – the Jailbreak event in Cobh – where she took third place in her F45 category.

Potential Gold Championship medals for Sonia O'Sullivan after Chinese media reports

According to a news story in the Irish Times, it would seem as if a letter written to a journalist 19 years ago has now been published and it shows that a lot of the Chinese athletes at the time were doping.

According to Chinese media sources, Wang Junxia the 3000m and 10000m women's world record holder is supposed to have sent a letter of admission of whole scale doping to a journalist back in the 90's and it was signed by all nine team mates. The IAAF have now said that they will investigate the issue and if it's true then medals may be reallocated.

“In any case, IAAF Competition Rule 263.3 (e) note (ii) clearly states that if anyone makes an admission of guilt, the IAAF can take action: if an athlete has admitted that, at some time prior to achieving a world record, he had used or taken advantage of a substance or technique prohibited at that time, then, subject to the advice of the Medical and Anti-Doping Commission, such record will not continue to be regarded as a World Record by the IAAF.”

The graphics below show the results from those World Championships in 1993...

In the womens 3000m, Sonia O'Sullivan finished in 4th place behind three Chinese athletes. If those three were disqualified then Sonia O'Sullivan would be moved up into the Gold medal position. The British athlete Alison Wyeth would be moved up into Silver. The Bronze would be awarded posthumously to the Russian athlete Yelena Romanova as she died of unknown causes in 2007 aged just 43.

In the 1500m final, Sonia O'Sullivan finished 2nd so in this case, she would be moved up into Gold if the Chinese athlete was disqualified.

Even the dogs in the street knew that the Chinese athletes from this period in the early 90's were doping. Wang Junxia set world records of 8:06.11 for 3,000m and 29:31.78 for 10,000 and remain unbroken today. In effect, she took or was given drugs which enabled her to run like a man.

Despite her questionable post, it still didn't stop the IAAF adding her to their Hall of Fame recently which says a lot about the level of corruption within the world athletics governing body.

At the moment, this is just a media story and it still has to be confirmed. It's only on conclusion of a successful IAAF investigation that the potential medals will be confirmed. There's always the chance that the story is just a hoax. Considering how old the letter and story is, it seems a bit strange as to why it's being brought up now and was not left buried.

Sonia O'Sullivan to run Dublin Marathon for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind

The Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind sent on the following information to me about Sonia O'Sullivan running the Dublin Marathon next Monday. This charity which is based on the Model Farm Road in Cork

Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind...Olympic medalist Sonia O’Sullivan has agreed to run the Dublin Marathon on 26th October in aid of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. Below Sonia has provided an update on the training she has undertaken to date. If you would like to join the #TeamSonia by volunteering to run the marathon with her, please contact colm@guidedogs.ie.

“With two weeks to go the marathon countdown has really begun. The past two weekends I have had my longest runs - 33km last weekend and 31km yesterday. The main thing I wanted to do with these runs was to practice what breakfast that I would have and what drinks and gels I would try out during the run to maintain energy and boost energy along the way.

I have chosen SIS sports drinks and gels as the ones that work for me. For breakfast I had 500ml of electrolyte lemon and lime flavour along with a coffee and some dry cereal, Paddy’s Granola and some raisins. The new breakfast routine that I have been trying is poached eggs. I never really thought about this before as I used to think porridge was the answer but after speaking with a fellow marathon runner recently while running around Fota Island recently I decided that a protein breakfast might be worth trying.

I had my poached eggs and headed out the door, feeling a bit heavy to start, I was slightly concerned but glad that I had practiced in training when only my watch was recording my effort. I noticed later on in my run that I was feeling much better so maybe the egg was digested and helping me as I got beyond two hours and when I should have been tiring I was actually speeding up and feeling quite good. I tried the egg breakfast again yesterday and again after a sluggish start I finished strongly and felt really good at the end of my run.

It was great to have two weekends back in Teddington, UK and be able to re visit many of my favourite training routes in Bushy Park, Richmond Park and along the River Thames. I also carried a SIS Gel with me and tried the double espresso version yesterday with caffeine boost and this agreed with me so I think this will be my Gel of choice on the 26th.

Back in Cork this week, today is a rest day and later today I will be planning my weeks training but the focus will be on reducing the miles and focusing on nutrition over the next two weeks. I have a plan that I am following thanks to David Carrie at Team Carrie running and the guidance I have taken on this plan has helped me to get in my long runs and also to realise that I can achieve a satisfying result off of 5 days running and realising the importance of resting each week, while also paying attention to good nutrition and feeling after sessions and long runs and also the importance of massage and treatment from Barry my local Osteopath each week in Cobh. I don’t look too far ahead and just check the training plan at the start of each week and focus on a week at a time.

I am confident  that I have put in the miles in training and the key for me will be not to go too fast  during the first 10km or so of the marathon, a couple of poached eggs should slow me down and save the energy for a few hours later when I will need it more. I am really looking forward to joining the Irish Guide Dogs team in Dublin and know that I am running not just for myself but also to help give others greater mobility and independence each day with the assistance of a Guide Dog.”

On Sunday the 20th of September, Sonia was at in Cobh to unveil a life size statue to herself commemorating the 20th anniversary of her winning Gold at the World Championships in Gothenburg in 1995.

Q & A with Sonia O'Sullivan about the Sonia 5k next Saturday 19th Sept

The Sonia 5k is coming up next Saturday the 19th of September in Cobh at 6pm. More info in this previous post.

As part of the build up to the race, the organisers had a Q&A session with Sonia O'Sullivan...

Q and A

What will it be like to come home and do the Sonia 5k in Cobh? Will it bring a special feeling…

It's always great to come home and run through the streets of Cobh, there was a time when not so many people ran through the streets of Cobh but that has changed recently and it's amazing really how long it took for some people to catch on to the running bug that I haven’t been able to let go of and still continue to enjoy.

Not many people know but one of my very last competitive races that I won was in Cobh – a 5km on the streets of Cobh at the Regatta 5km in 2007, this was around the time that I was starting to realise that my results were not matching my training efforts .

Cobh is a very compact town and the perfect setting for a race finish especially if the town's people come out to cheer everyone on. It's really great that there will be mile races for children so all the family can be involved and you never know someone new may just catch the running bug.

Ballymore Cobh has seen a huge resurgence in members over the past year and it is fantastic to see so many Cobh people enjoying running and all that it adds to their daily life.

Dun Laoghaire saw a lot of women coming to the event. Why do you think it appealed to women?

It was a surprise to notice the significant numbers of women taking part in the DL Sonia 5k, it was so much fun to see so many groups of women come along for the evening and for me to get the opportunity to run back and share the run with them as they streamed in to the finish line. This is a great opportunity for the women of Munster to join in the fun and make their presence felt on the streets of Cobh.

What is the importance of exercise for mothers and active women?

Exercise is important for everyone but I think women can find themselves often bogged down with all the household chores and cooking. It is just so nice to have that escape to go for a run and this is made so much easier when there are regular times and meeting spots where runners meet up and all are welcome. It's a known fact if you agree to meet someone to run then you are much more likely to get out and exercise whatever the weather.

Will it be extra special to have the run in Cobh as you will have traveled full circle from where you started to one of the pinnacles of your career?

I have ran many miles around the streets of Cobh, up the hills and around the back of the island, on the low road, high road, lake road circuit for as long as I can remember on those cold dark winter nights. Cobh has so many great running routes if you are willing to explore so to culminate with 5km in the middle of the town on september 19th will be really special. So many times I returned to Cobh after winning medals on the European, World and Olympic stage and stood on the back of a lorry just wishing I could do a song or a dance in front of thousands of expectant fans and supporters who were always there for me in good times and bad so to be able to lace up my shoes and run through the town is the action I love to be involved with.
