From the organisers.....EYERIES 5 MILE ROAD RACE...Now in it’s sixth year, the Eyeries 5 Mile Road Race is now established as a firm favourite in the West Cork running calendar. This stunning location, set on the Beara Peninsula punches well above its weight, attracting up to two-hundred entrants each year including a steady stream of runners from the city and county clubs.

With one of the largest selection of prizes it’s no wonder it has maintained it’s popularity. Category prizes from the junior’s boys and girls, F35 M40 and upwards plus a new course record bonus prize, brings the number of prizes to over sixty!

The Eyeries event, sponsored by Murphy’s SUPERVALU Castletownbere, is the final race of three in the new Beara A.C. Autumn Race series. The preceding races, in Allihies and Bere Island have whet the appetite of this small, but enthusiastic running community and they will be looking to finish off the event on a high note on Saturday 9 th November next, starting at 2:30pm.

Participants of all three events receive a Beara A.C. commemorative medal. Like the other races on the peninsula there is no shortage of scenery on the Wild Atlantic Way. As every runner knows, scenery can only mean some hills are involved. The course takes you through the colourful award-winning village on a tough uncompromising loop that saves its toughest hills for the fourth mile. A fast and spectacular finish on the flat and downhill into the village again with views over the north Beara coastline brings you to the end line.

Registration, prizegiving and post-race refreshments in the nearby village hall give this event a special atmosphere that keeps participants returning each year. If you haven’t ventured thus far it might be time you made your way to Eyeries to see what they’re all talking about.

€10.60 Online Pre-registration: click HERE

Or Register on the Day: begins at 12 noon on the day in Eyeries Hall. €12.00 per person if registering on the day.

The Beara Peninsula in West Cork is one of the most scenic parts of the country and an ideal backdrop for this road race in November. It might well suit any clubs or small groups who are looking for a day or weekend away.

From the organisers.....EYERIES 5 MILE ROAD RACE...We are hopeful of continued local support and also the support of runners in the wider Cork and south-western area which we have got over the last three years.

The event has attracted fields of up to 300 runners which is no mean feat in this part of the world. This is due in no small part to an appreciative running community that recognise our endeavours to have a well run event. In the spirit of rewarding as many as we can, we place a big effort in covering all categories with prizes. We have over 50 prizes on offer again this year.

Race proceeds are in aid of Beara AC which is being reformed and will be Cork's latest athletics club from January 2018. We are very excited by this and the opportunities that it will give to young and old in Beara. Its is our priority to offer our youth the opportunity to participate compete at the many athletics events that are on offer throughout the calendar.

New club called Beara AC to launch in Jan 2018

A meeting about establishing a new athletics club on the Beara Peninsula was held in Castletownbere on Friday the 1st of September 2017. Anyone interested in establishing a new club was invited to attend and the meeting seems to have been well supported.

There used to be a juvenile club here some years ago but it seemed to fade away. The current pkan is to officially launch the new club in January of 2018.

From the organisers.... "The idea is to launch a running club for adults, initially, with the hope to move to juniors (12+) within the year and younger juniors in the future. The hope is that we can pool resources to organise races and events of all kinds including road running, x country and mountain ... and maybe shorter distances and track in future, actual track permitting!! We have a running coach (me!) specialising in adult beginners/improvers (endurance). "

Notice...Eyeries 5 mile road race, West Cork - Sat 8th Nov 2014

The Beara Peninsula in West Cork is one of those areas that has been until recently completely devoid of road races. Perhaps it's not so suprising considering the low population density but it is in stark contrast to other areas of the county where there seems to be a glut of events.

This particular one is brand new on the race calendar and it looks pretty stunning.

As courses go, it probably isn't the fastest as there are a number of hills but what a location for a race! On a nice sunny day, it would be absolutely stunning.

From the organisers.....Eyeries, on the Beara Peninsula, will host its first five mile road race on Saturday 8th 2014. The race will start at 2:30pm. This is the inaugural running of this event and the organisers are hoping for a good turnout for their first race. The event is sponsored by Murphys SuperValu Castletownbere and The Edge. The entry fee for the race is €10 and registration is available on www.eyeries.ie. All profits from the race will be donated to the construction of the new Eyeries Playground.

Eyeries Hall in the village is Race HQ where registration and collection of race numbers will take place as well as post-race refreshments and prizes. Parking will be available within walking distance of Race HQ and the village.

Eyeries Running Promotions are organising this race to bring quality road racing to Beara. Following the example set by neighbours in Bere Island, it is hoped that this will be the first of many more races in the area. The committee have engaged with Bantry AC and Athletics Association of Ireland to organise this race. The course has been measured and certified to AAI & IAAF standards and the AAI Race Permit has been granted. It is open to all levels of runners and walkers.

The Prizes are: €100 - 1st, , €75 – 2nd  and €50 - 3rd  (Male and Female)
€40 voucher for The Edge Sports – 1st  Male & Female in the following categories: over-40, over 50 and over 60. Lots of other prizes on the day.
Please support this worthwhile event.

In terms of location, Eyeries is of course quite a distance for a lot of people. It might make a good excuse for some to make a weekend of it in the area. In November, this stunning part of West Cork can be very quiet and I'm sure they would appreciate all the support that they can get.
