Results of the Eyeries 5-mile road race - Sat 12th Nov 2022

The Eyeries 5-mile road race was held this year on Saturday 12th November 2022 with 128 runners crossing the finish line.

As can be seen from the chart above, this is the lowest number ever for this race and is down 26% on the figure for 2021.

While most races this year are down on the pre-pandemic numbers, quite a few races restarted in Q4 of 2021. In that light, both this year and last year are both post pandemic races.

128 runners is still a pretty good number for a road race on the Beara Peninsula, especially for one in November. Despite that, 26% is still a pretty large drop from last year and nowhere near the 180-200 that they used to get before.

Notice: Eyeries 5-mile road race in West Cork - Sat 6th Nov 2021

Aerial Photo Eyeries Village. Photo by Lorraine Crowley

It's back! The popular Eyeries 5 mile road race is coming up on Saturday the 6th of November 2021 in West Cork.

As can be seen from the photo above, it really is a stunning part of the country. Eyeries is a lovely little village full of brightly coloured houses and it's squeezed in between the mountains of the Beara Peninsula on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.

It's no suprise that many clubs and groups use the Eyeries event as an excuse for an outing with a race thrown in for good measure.

This race was first established by Eyeries Running Promotions and has been carefully built up over the last few years.

As you can see from the flyer above and the text below, there is a very substantial prize list which a lot of road races closer to Cork City would struggle to match.

From the organisers... "Eyeries 5 Mile Road Race returns after a break last year. The course is the same, the time of year is the same and a well organised and safe event will hopefully be the same. In it’s seventh running, Eyeries 5 Mile has regularly attracted between 150 – 200 participants.

Taking place at the end of the year it is a ideally placed for runners to draw a line under the running year and celebrate with one last bash at this classic distance. It is the last of four races in the ‘Beara A.C. Autumn 5 Mile Series’ which expanded this year to include Glengariff, Allihies, Bere Island and Eyeries.

Competitors of all four races receive a commemorative medal as well as competing for the series 1st , 2nd and 3rd .

We have made a big effort with our great local sponsors to maintain a big prize list in Eyeries with all
categories having prizes for 1st , 2nd and 3rd places from Juniors all the way up to over 75’s. We have
learned from our devoted, returning runners that this large spread of prizes keeps our participant
numbers high and makes for a better occasion for all.

We have added in no small way by increasing our podium prizes to the TOP 5 home in Male and Female. With prizes increased to €250, €150, €100, €75 and €50 respectively for 1st to 5th .

New for this year is the inclusion of a Male Team, and Female Team Prizes Top 4 to score. Plus a Mixed Team Prize of six to score 3 Male and 3 Female. We want to promote the club team effort and these prizes will make for some interesting competition.

So make a date and book your spot in Eyeries on Saturday 6th November 2021 at 2:30pm.

From the organisers.....EYERIES 5 MILE ROAD RACE...Now in it’s sixth year, the Eyeries 5 Mile Road Race is now established as a firm favourite in the West Cork running calendar. This stunning location, set on the Beara Peninsula punches well above its weight, attracting up to two-hundred entrants each year including a steady stream of runners from the city and county clubs.

With one of the largest selection of prizes it’s no wonder it has maintained it’s popularity. Category prizes from the junior’s boys and girls, F35 M40 and upwards plus a new course record bonus prize, brings the number of prizes to over sixty!

The Eyeries event, sponsored by Murphy’s SUPERVALU Castletownbere, is the final race of three in the new Beara A.C. Autumn Race series. The preceding races, in Allihies and Bere Island have whet the appetite of this small, but enthusiastic running community and they will be looking to finish off the event on a high note on Saturday 9 th November next, starting at 2:30pm.

Participants of all three events receive a Beara A.C. commemorative medal. Like the other races on the peninsula there is no shortage of scenery on the Wild Atlantic Way. As every runner knows, scenery can only mean some hills are involved. The course takes you through the colourful award-winning village on a tough uncompromising loop that saves its toughest hills for the fourth mile. A fast and spectacular finish on the flat and downhill into the village again with views over the north Beara coastline brings you to the end line.

Registration, prizegiving and post-race refreshments in the nearby village hall give this event a special atmosphere that keeps participants returning each year. If you haven’t ventured thus far it might be time you made your way to Eyeries to see what they’re all talking about.

Or Register on the Day: begins at 12 noon on the day in Eyeries Hall. €12.00 per person if registering on the day.

Talk by top athletics coach Br.Colm O'Connell in Eyeries...Fri 25th Sept 2015

Brother Colm O'Connell has been the coach to some of the greatest of the Kenyan athletes including David Rudisha who won Gold in the 800m at the 2012 London Olympics. On Friday the 25th of September, Colm will be giving a talk at the National School in Eyeries in West Cork.

For anyone young or old with an interest in athletics, this is one not to be missed.

From the organisers......Eyeries Running Promotions are delighted to announce the visit of Br.Colm O'Connell to Eyeries to promote our upcoming Eyeries 5 Mile Road Race. Br. Colm is home from Kenya for a few weeks and has agreed to come and give a talk in Eyeries National School on Friday 25th September.

Br.Colm is coach to many Kenyan athletes who have acheived great success for their country around the globe, including the current 800m Olympic and World Champion and Record Holder David Rudisha.

We will also have Ian Kiprono as guest speaker at our event in Eyeries on Friday. Ian is taking over the reigns at Iten from Br.Colm and will have some very interesting insights into training.
Our MC for the evening will be Mike McGrath of Eagle Athletic Club.

Eyeries 5 mile Road Race takes place on Saturday 7th November at 2:30pm and we will be hoping for another successful event this year. We are delighted to be sponsored again by Murphy's SuperValu, Castletownbere and The Edge Sports Superstore Cork. Last years run raised much needed funds for the Eyeries Playground and the fruits of our labours can be seen by all visitors to the village.

Since we started our road race last year, there has been two new races added to the Beara running calendar with the Allihies 5 mile and the Castletownbere 10km with the now famous weekly Bere Island 5km Park Run. We hope this event will add to the growing interest in the area in what promises to be a most stimulating evening with one of Cork's most unassuming sporing luminaries.

This years road race will be raising funds for the proposed extension to the Eyeries Community Development Meeting Rooms. The talk by Br.Colm will be a free event and your donations on the night towards our designated charity will be most welcome.

The Beara Peninsula in West Cork is one of those areas that has been until recently completely devoid of road races. Perhaps it's not so suprising considering the low population density but it is in stark contrast to other areas of the county where there seems to be a glut of events.

This particular one is brand new on the race calendar and it looks pretty stunning.

As courses go, it probably isn't the fastest as there are a number of hills but what a location for a race! On a nice sunny day, it would be absolutely stunning.

From the organisers.....Eyeries, on the Beara Peninsula, will host its first five mile road race on Saturday 8th 2014. The race will start at 2:30pm. This is the inaugural running of this event and the organisers are hoping for a good turnout for their first race. The event is sponsored by Murphys SuperValu Castletownbere and The Edge. The entry fee for the race is €10 and registration is available on www.eyeries.ie. All profits from the race will be donated to the construction of the new Eyeries Playground.

Eyeries Hall in the village is Race HQ where registration and collection of race numbers will take place as well as post-race refreshments and prizes. Parking will be available within walking distance of Race HQ and the village.

Eyeries Running Promotions are organising this race to bring quality road racing to Beara. Following the example set by neighbours in Bere Island, it is hoped that this will be the first of many more races in the area. The committee have engaged with Bantry AC and Athletics Association of Ireland to organise this race. The course has been measured and certified to AAI & IAAF standards and the AAI Race Permit has been granted. It is open to all levels of runners and walkers.

The Prizes are: €100 - 1st, , €75 – 2nd  and €50 - 3rd  (Male and Female)
€40 voucher for The Edge Sports – 1st  Male & Female in the following categories: over-40, over 50 and over 60. Lots of other prizes on the day.
Please support this worthwhile event.

In terms of location, Eyeries is of course quite a distance for a lot of people. It might make a good excuse for some to make a weekend of it in the area. In November, this stunning part of West Cork can be very quiet and I'm sure they would appreciate all the support that they can get.
