Talk by Kate Veale in Ballynoe - Fri 18th Oct 2019

This talk in the village of Ballnoe in NE Cork is coming up on Fri 18th Oct 2019. This is about 5kms to the south of Conna.

From St.Catherine's AC... OLYMPIC ATHLETE TO SPEAK IN BALLYNOE HALL
Ballynoe Community Council, in conjunction with St. Catherine’s Athletic Club, are privileged to host one of the country’s top athletes currently preparing to qualify and compete in the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Kate Veale is an athlete with incredible achievements at the mere age of 25. Kate was a gold medal winner at U18 in the National cross country and went on to compete at European level in 2011. Her focus switched to racewalking, winning medals at the European Youths and Youth Olympics while still only in 4th year of secondary school in Dungarvan. Her meteoric rise came crashing down when she sustained a hip injury. The combination of youthful ambition, incredible talent meet with the harsh reality of serious injury and has lead Kate on a journey since of reaching the depths of despair physically and mentally. Thankfully she has found her strengths in dealing with such adversity and is back on course and is attempting to qualify for Tokyo 2020. Kate has spoken out on her own behalf on how horrific it can be to deal with the mental turmoil she endured. She published an article last March detailing her struggles, she certainly made an impact as she has since been in touch with athletes and non-athletes from all over the world who have identified with her honesty and vulnerability.

Kate Veale has so graciously accepted our invitation to come to Ballynoe on October 18th, and give a firsthand account of her career highs and her physical and mental lows and her new found insights into how to cope and deal with both. Hope you will come and join us in Ballynoe Hall on the evening of Friday the 18th October to hear Kate speak. This is part of Ballynoe Community Council’s Mental Health and Wellbeing initiative, in conjunction with St. Catherine’s Athletic Club.

Results of the East Cork Road Championships...26th Apr 2012

The East Cork Road Championships were held in Ballynoe to the north-east of Midleton on Thursday, the 26th 2012. In total, 78 runners took part with the men running 5 miles and the women running 2k on what are very hilly courses.

The mens race over 5 miles had a field of 38 runners. The winner of the race was Frank Hayes from East Cork AC in 28:17.

Place    Time    Name    Team    Race Age Category    min/mile

The womens race over 2k had a field of 40 runners and was won by Eadaoin O'Neill of East Cork AC in 7:44. In nearly all road championships, the men outnumber the women by a large magin, 2:1 might be a typical ratio. In this particular case, there were more women than men which is unusual. Perhaps it's a sign of the current trend in running?

Preview of the East Cork Road Championships...Thurs 29th Apr 2010
Normally Championship races are confined to members of athletic clubs only. This one however is open to anyone who wishes to take part. The numbers taking part are usually small and the entry fee is usually very modest.

There are two events 1) The Ladies’ 2000m (7:30pm)

 and 2) The Men's 5 mile race.

Men’s Five Mile.....The middle section and the majority of the race consists of four laps of a triangular course. The start line is a half-mile south of the village, on the road towards Dungourney. You then run back into the village, through the central crossroads, and past the Community Centre, going downhill slightly.
After the yellow "junction ahead" sign, you take a sharp left. You're onto a narrow quieter road, continuing downhill again.
Just after a YIELD sign, and the FAILTE hedge, you take another sharp left. After 100m the road gets *very* steep, as you go uphill past the GAA grounds, and the Garda Station.
At the top of the hill, there is a STOP sign. This is the crossroads. Turn left here. That completes the first of four triangular laps.
As each lap is a little over a mile, you will appear to encounter the mile-markers in reverse order! Don't worry; just count your laps carefully.
At the fourth lap, you will turn right at the STOP sign, heading out the road from which you started. The finish line is at the brown Eircom public telephone box.

Results of the East Cork Road Championships...Thurs 23rd Apr 2009
This event in Ballynoe consisted of a 5 mile road race for men and a 2 km road race for women. As expected, the fields were pretty small and consisted mainly of local runners.

Race Report by Donal O'Donoughue.......
It was a little damp, more so during the Ladies 2000m, but things cleared up somewhat by the time the Men's 5 mile started. There were 18 ladies - double last year. There were 31 men - the same number as last year. This was mainly an East Cork clubs event, with a few independent runners like me taking part.

It's still got that short but incredibly steep hill, which the Ladies do once, but the men do four times.
The course was marked at each mile, and somebody had even taken the time to draw white circles around the few potholes on the course. Nice :-)
John Walshe had the results in double-quick time.
The winner of the Ladies and the Men's event each received a silver cup, and there were medals for 2nd, 3rd. East Cork AC cleaned up, taking 8 out of the top 10 places, and also won the team prize, despite the fact that individual winners did not count in the Team prizes. Midleton AC had a big turnout too, and came second in the team category. Youghal AC were third.
Teas, sandwiches, buns and fruit cake at the Community Centre finished off a very enjoyable evening.
On a sad note, I see that Eircom have put a note on the public Telephone Box in Ballynoe, saying this facility is about to be removed. We need to get a preservation order placed on this phone box. It's our finish line!!.......Donal O'Donoghue

Preview of the East Cork Road Championships...Thurs 23rd Apr 2009
Unfortunately, there is a clash of races on Thursday evening with 2 events on offer. To the north of Midleton, there is East Cork Road Championships in Ballynoe starting at 7:30pm. This race will be mainly of interest to runners from east Cork although it is open to other runners as well. The other race on Thursday evening is the Mallow 5 mile road race. This also starts at 7:30pm and is likely to draw a much larger field.

Race Report........by Donal O'Donoughue
' The loneliness of the short-distance runner '
Despite being told by somebody who should know, that the start time was 8pm, it appeared to start at 7:50...ish. I registered at about 7:47, and was running to the start line, when the pack started running towards me. I joined near the back, did my best. However, I did cover the distance and a bit more....I'm a little out of shape.

There were 9 (NINE) women in the Women’s 2000m race, which started earlier.
There were 30 (THREE ZERO) men in the men's race, which turned out to be a five miler. All but two of the men were from Athletic clubs, i.e. me and some local guy from Ballynoe.
I honestly thought this would be a 4 mile breeze -- some competitive practice, for Friday night's Mallow race. Not so. This started out perhaps 0.5 miles south of the village on the R627 (the road from Midleton). Through the village, and then left, anti-clockwise along a back road to the west of the village, and then east along the road with the Garda Station and GAA club, and back into the centre of the village. This hill by the Garda station was a "killer". Sally Drennan and friends were standing outside the GAA club offering moral support and encouragement. I used some precious breath to ask a guy alongside me "Do we do two laps?” Depressingly, the answer was "nah, this is a four lap race!!” After the third lap, I was on my own, literally. Sally & friends ran with me up hill to the village. The end was a right turn, a hundred metres or so, and finished near a phone box, near the post office.
There were no spectacular 5-minute mile performances. The hill took care of that!
The course was very quiet, apart from an articulated trunk that arrived at the GAA pitch. This took up almost the whole road, and I had to run on the grass verge to avoid being squashed.
Not sure what route the women's 2000m followed.
No traffic Marshals, but there were highly visible 1, 2, 3, and 4 mile signs, although their positioning was a bit confusing, as the lap was slightly less than a mile. Or maybe one was suffering from Asphyxia after "the hill".
Tea & sandwiches in the Ballynoe Community Hall.....Lovely buttered fruit-cake, and jammy cakes!
I came last, but hadn't time to wait about to see if there was a booby-prize! But on the positive side, THIRTHIETH is the highest ranking I've ever achieved. I'm wrecked.
