Lottery system announced for 2020 Dublin Marathon...

Post updated for revised entry conditions for 2017, 2018 & 2019 participants.

Post updated with the 'Good for Age' entry info for club runners. It is set at a level which will exclude the bulk of club runners who will have to go with the lottery option.

Update: Fri 15th Nov 2019... It looks as if that around 16,000 places for the 2020 Dublin City Marathon have been snapped up by those granted priority access. This leaves an estimated 6,400 places for the lottery entrants!

In a statement, race director said that the 16,100 figure was “higher than we expected”. He added...“It goes to show how valued an entry into the KBC Dublin Marathon has become and it's heartwarming to us as organisers to see the demand continue to grow. The lottery closes at the end of the month and we also need to discuss with Gardai and the city about what number we can take next year. Until all that happens then we don’t know exact numbers.”

It is not known at present if they will be allowed to add additional numbers by the city authorities.

Update from the organisers (31st Oct 2019)... KBC Dublin Marathon, have made the decision to guarantee a race entry for anyone who has participated in one of the last three editions of the KBC Dublin Marathon namely, the 2017, 2018 or 2019 event. Eligible participants will be able to guarantee their place in the 2020 event provided they enter within 72 hours of receiving a unique URL enabling them to do so. The URL will be issued at 12 noon on Friday 1st November.

From the organisers....The KBC Dublin Marathon race organisers have today announced that registration for the 2020 Dublin Marathon will occur through a lottery system instead of the first-come, first-served online process. This decision was made as a result of the increased demand for race entries.

Jim Aughney Race Director said: “Many races that have more interested runners than they can accommodate have moved to a lottery registration system in recent years. Demand for the Dublin Marathon has never been greater, and we believe the lottery is the fairest system to offer all runners the same opportunity to participate.”

This change comes after registration demand for the 2019 edition of the marathon could not be met despite the addition of 2,500 places.

Entry to the 2020 KBC Dublin Marathon lottery will be open from the 1st November to 30th November 2019 ONLY.

There will be a registration fee of €15 per lottery entry which will be fully refundable if the applicant is not successful and fully redeemable against entry fee if the applicant is successful. Registrants will learn their entry status via SMS and email between 3rd January to 10th January. Successful entrants will have until 31st January 2020 to redeem the offer.

Any initial places not redeemed by 31st January 2020 will be re-allocated by lottery to entrants who were not successful. The applicants will learn their entry status via SMS and email between the 4th February to 7th February 2020. These offers must be redeemed by 14th February 2020

This is disappointing, as missing out on what is an amazing event wold be devastating. Maybe the first thing they need to address is how despite 22500 registrations in 2019, only 17500 ran it. A bib transfer window would address a lot of the excess demand.
Will there be any good for age places I wonder?

The DCM incorporates the National Marathon Championships that is administered by Athletics Ireland. What proviso is made by Athletics Ireland (AI) to permit AI-registered club athletes to enter these Championships, as is, I believe, their right? A year, or thereabouts, in advance is too far for most of us to make that decision.
Even if one chooses to enter a year out, then one's application is left to the whim of a lottery system. Is this fair to club athletes?
So, it boils down to the toss of a coin in which non AI-registered athletes compete for entry alongside AI-registered athletes, many of whom give countless voluntary hours to assist in the running of their respective clubs, coaching to children, organising transport to, participating in and financing of numerous AI-related events. And they do so much more.
These people play a positive and active role in the well-being of their communities. They deserve more than what's being offered to them.
How about a percentage of entries guaranteed to AI-registered clubs that they can utilise up to, say, 6 months in advance of the DCM?
These people deserve more respect - it's time to show it to them.

It's a shame they're going this way, after making such a big thing of the runners who did all 39 marathons before this weekend (rightly so). With a lottery system it's going to be nearly impossible to go every year, down to chance!
22,500 places sold, was it about 17,800 people turned up, there's nearly 5 thousand places they could have covered with an entry transfer system. A pity they didn't try that route first.
