Sonia O'Sullivan statue unveiled in Cobh...Sun 20th Sept 2015

When you look back at the medal tally of Irish athletes over the years, Sonia O'Sullivan was without doubt probably the greatest. There have been many great performances and medals from others over the years but no-one has been so dominant as Sonia was when she was at her best.

On Sunday the 20th of September, Sonia was at in Cobh to unveil a life size statue to herself commemorating the 20th anniversary of her winning Gold at the World Championships in Gothenburg in 1995.

Shocking. A total embarrassment.
What must poor Sonia have thought when she saw it.
I'd suggest it be taken down, and a new, more appropriate one commissioned.

Fully agree with all of the above, please take a look at the memorial to Joe West unveiled in Carrigaline last year and see what an appropiate monument to great athlete should look like.

Very poor indeed, what was the total cost ?. I also think it should be taken down and replaced with something more appropriate.

Hate to see all the negative comments about this but there really is no avoiding the fact of how bad the statue is. Hopefully it's better than we're seeing in the pictures (but I doubt it)

Its just a pity considering who is being honoured, did anybody have a look at it before unveiling it

looks like an old man running in his underpants who has lost his teeth
- embarrassing "honor" to a great athlete

There are people who could take a sledgehammer to it in the dead of night !! ( "they havent gone away you know") lol. Being serious for a minute, it is truly terrible looking, and in no way celebrates Sonia.
Who's remit would it come under to push for it to be replaced with a more appropriate statue ?

MEOW ! to the 9 ANONYMOUS posters firstly I would like to say that regardless of what you think the statue looks like( and by the way I think its an extremely nice & pleasing work of art)the statue was put there by the people of Cobh and in particular Cobh Tourism to honour Sonia O'Sullivan ( A Cobite herself) for her amazing achievements over her athletics career and in particular her Gold medal in Gothenburg in 1995. Also Sonia is to this day a great ambassador for the sport of running, the town of Cobh and our country.
Come to Cobh and have a look at the statue close up and then remember why the statue is there !.... to honour a true sporting hero and all round nice person.
